Ghosts of Edge Hill
Tumblr media
Source: Esoturx website
On this day in 1643, the first battle of the First English Civil War was fought at Edge Hill in Warwickshire. It was a hard fought and bloody affair, the first time that armed Englishmen had attempted to kill each other in a political cause since the Wars of the Roses. Perhaps because of the years of bloodshed it unleashed, Edge Hill remains one of Britain’s most haunted battlefields, with the phantom Royalist and Parliamentary armies slugging it out in ghostly repetition as early as the Christmas of 1643. There have been many sightings of spectral Cavaliers and Roundheads at Edge Hill, including of the entire battle itself. The surrounding area is not much less haunted. An elusive building known as the Red Barn is said to drip blood from its upper storey following the death of a wounded Royalist officer taking refuge there; the ghost of Prince Rupert has been spotted riding the roadways (not that Rupert died at the battle) and the Red Road is is named after the stream of blood that flowed down it in the aftermath of the battle (allegedly). Whatever the ins and outs of the hauntings, Edge Hill remains a genuinely atmospheric and unsettling site. Every Sunday nearest to 23rd October, the Sealed Knot Society re-enacts the battle and a wreath is laid at the battlefield’s monument, a mark of respect to men who gave their lives for their beliefs.

All Father Thor, King of Asgard,
A new ruler of Hel has been chosen, the fearsome King Phantom, defeater of Pariah Dark. It is time for Asgard to prepare to pay the dues required to keep peace between the realms of the gods and of the dead. Bring the terms of your surrender to King’s Phantom’s representative on earth, Daniel James Fenton of Amity Park.
The Noble Scribe of King Phantom,
Ghost Writer
*****
“Okay so let me get this straight,” Tony Stark, Iron Man and Avenger said. “Ghosts are real.”
“Yes.” King Thor Odinson, Asgardian and god of thunder agreed.
“And they’re evil.”
“A bit of an oversimplification, but yes.” Prince Loki Odinson, sometimes villain and would be planet invader, answered.
“And the ghosts have had one ruler, the most powerful ghost in existence. And that new rulers are chosen by combat, meaning that every new ruler is more powerful than the last.”
“Yes, you’ve got the idea.” Thor said looking down at his knees for a moment.
“And since ghosts are so evil and so powerful, that means that their ruler is practically an unstoppable force of destruction.”
“Doesn’t it sound delightful?” Loki asked, to which he received a glare.
“So, for the past 10,000 years, at least, Asgard and plenty of other realms have been paying taxes to the ghost king to avoid a war. A racketeering scheme.”
“I don’t know what a racketeering scheme is but yes, the ghost peace treaty does require that Asgard pay the ghost king gold and magical weapons every century and if we fail to pay that price, then the peace treaty will be broken and Asgard will likely be forfeit.”
“That’s a racketeering scheme!”
“Well then yes.”
Tony pinched the bridge of his nose. It was clear the man’s headache was only growing stronger as he walked through the information the two gods had dumped into his lap this morning. Thor and Loki both had rushed into his lab and started babbling about world ending threats and how they might possibly be absolutely screwed.
“So, now there’s a new king. Which means a new peace treaty has to be signed.” Tony said the words ‘peace treaty’ in the same way he’d say ‘nuclear bomb’ or ‘Steve Rogers’.
“I thought you said it was a racketeering scheme?” Loki asked.
“Shut it.” Tony hissed.
“A new treaty must be signed.” Thor repeated, trying to keep the three of them on track.
“And since the last king Pariah Dark was so powerful that he made the entirety of Asgard tremble, you’re pretty sure this new king, Phantom, is probably worse.”
“Pariah Dark had the power to suck entire planets into the afterlife, destroying them,” Loki said looking at his nails. “Stands to reason that a ghost powerful enough to defeat him could do much, much worse.”
“Right. Fantastic!” Tony practically shouted.
“I don’t think anything about this is fantastic.” Thor admitted, he was ignored.
“And according to you Asgard has been paying the ghost tax for both their realm and ours since we were under Odin’s protection. And since Hela and Sutur destroyed your entire planet and your entire people are refugees, now we have to figure out how to keep an ultrapowerful ghost from wiping out our home without any way of paying him.”
“Technically we don’t know if Phantom is a ‘he’.” Loki pointed out unhelpfully.
“The letter literally says he’s a king!”
“Could be a title. What do the dead have need for gender?”
“This is not the point of this discussion,” Thor cut in before an argument about the usefulness of gender and the concept of a female king burst forth. “We’re here to figure out how to make peace with King Phantom without resulting in a war that would destroy our world and our peoples.”
“We don’t even have Earth’s mightiest heroes anymore.” Loki said, referencing the painful results of the civil war and the Accords.
“We’re fucked.” Tony decided.
“Yes,” Thor agreed. “We probably are.”

Tryna make new friends but they died in 1863

Gettysburg, a town in Pennsylvania, is one of the most haunted areas in the United States. During its three days of intense battle ending on July 3, 1863, more than 7,800 brave Union and Confederate soldiers lost their lives and tens of thousands more were wounded and crippled. It’s no wonder that hundreds upon hundreds of ghostly encounters have been reported at this National Military Park.
Tourists and ghost hunters have snapped photos with enigmatic images, dozens of fascinating EVP recordings have been made and one of the most interesting and compelling ghost videos was shot there.
The Farnsworth House Inn
It’s been called one of the most haunted inns in America. Built in 1810, this brick structure is said to be the dwelling place of several Civil War-era ghosts, and many people – both staff and guests alike – can attest to strange goings-on there.
Guests at the hotel have reported to feeling their bed shake or jolt in the middle of the night, without obvious cause. Others have claimed to see figures walking throughout the inn and even have said to hear doors slam without explanation.
Little Round Top
Civil War battles have been the subject of many motion pictures, but one of the best and most moving was 1993’s Gettysburg. During the filming of that movie, much of which was done right on location at the actual battlefields, some of the participants had an unexplained encounter. Because the film required so many extras to serve as soldiers, the production hired re-enactors to portray the Union and Confederate armies.
During a break in filming one day, several of the extras were resting at Little Round Top and admiring the setting sun. They were approached by a grizzled old man, whom they described as wearing a ragged and scorched Union uniform and smelling of sulfur gunpowder. He talked to them about how furious the battle was as he passed around spare rounds of ammunition, then went on his way.
At first, the extras assumed he was part of the production company, but their minds changed when they looked closely at the ammunition he gave them. They took the rounds to the man in charge of giving out such props for the movie, and he said they did not come from him. It turns out the ammunition from the strange old man were genuine musket rounds from that period.
Devil’s Den
There is a large, distinctive outcropping of rock in one section of the Gettysburg battlefield known as Devil’s Den. Dozens of ghost sightings have been reported here by tourists over the years. One of the most well-known is that of a barefoot man dressed in a butternut-colored shirt and floppy hat, which fits the description of a rag-tag unit from Texas who participated in the battle. Those who have met this spirit report that he always says the same thing: “What you’re looking for is over there” as he points toward the Plum Run. He then vanishes into thin air.
The Phantom Surgery
Mark Nesbitt, one of the foremost authorities and authors on the ghosts of Gettysburg, relates one of the area’s most gruesome experiences. Pennsylvania Hall at Gettysburg College has been the site of many Civil War era ghost encounters, but perhaps none can compare to what two college administrators saw one night.
One hundred years ago, the building had been used as a field hospital for many of the fierce battle’s wounded. But on this night, as the two administrators were taking the elevator from the fourth floor down to the first, the long-ago nightmare wasn’t even on their minds.
Inexplicably, the elevator passed the first floor and continued on to the basement. When the doors opened, the administrators could scarcely believe their eyes. What they knew to be storage space was replaced by a scene from the hospital: dead and dying men were lying about on the floor. Blood-covered doctors and orderlies were rushing about chaotically, trying desperately to save their lives. No sound emanated from the ghastly sight, but both administrators saw it clearly.
Horrified, they frantically pushed the elevator button to close the doors. As the doors closed, they said, one of the orderlies looked up and directly at them, appearing to see them with a pleading expression on his face.
Sach’s Bridge
Constructed in 1854 and originally known as Sauck’s Bridge, this 100-foot expanse over a creek not far from the battlefield also has its share of ghost encounters.
A group of paranormal investigators ventured out to Sach’s Bridge to see if they could get interesting photos or recordings. While they were there, a strange fog filled the air, and the group saw lights from across the field.
They then heard sounds of neighing horses and cannon fire, which lasted for over 20 minutes. As the last canon fired, the fog lifted.
The group left the bridge, but seven returned later that night, thinking there might be more to experience.
The experience got even more terrifying; they saw shadow people darting by and heard men’s voices. When they heard growling and the sounds of battle, they finally left.
Screams of Battle
Possibly the most unnerving experience one can have at Gettysburg is actually hearing – by ear or by EVP recording – the echoes of that horrific battle and its ghostly cries of pain and death.
People have reported hearing battle cries and charges, followed by the agonized cries of men screaming and moaning. It can sound like people are dying all around you.
Gettysburg saw one of the bloodiest battles in our nation’s history, so it is understandable that Gettysburg ghosts are so common.

The thing with liking war riddled men is it always comes with body worship
Like fuck baby he thinks he can just look all delectable with those scars, burns, holes and scabs of disfigured skin in full display and you'll not just want to run your hands around every single one of em. Taking your sweet time to pepper kisses to each and every part of him. Lips brushing against the very marks that prove he's here with you, alive.
You think you'll also get out some beautiful gasps and whimpers of your name, get to watch his pretty face scrunch up; hear breath hitching in his throat and see his eyes darken while you take your sweet time ravaging him with love

A–Aventio TGCF idea?? Wherein Civil God Veritas Ratio meets the infamous Ghost King Aventurine during his first mission cuz cuz like— The "live for me" paralels?!? The one who has all the luck partner as well?!? The villain who was actually not the Villain this whole time!?!? The loving humanity a little too much it causes their downfall !?!?!?
Rant AU in the tags proceed with caution
#Okay to put it into better words:#Veritas having once being a prince wanted to give everyone the prosperity of knowledge and became a civil god in the pursuit of it.#Sadly this backfires in people using that knowledge for their own greed and creating civil wars within it as well as unleashing far more#Destruction upon the land. And the other gods didn't help Veritas in stopping that bc see that's what happens when people overshare info!!#So the aftermath is just pure chaos plus banishment from being a civil god and thrown as this god of war and plague.#800 years passes and he is seen to just still be doing the same things but I a simple term. Teaching people to read and count.#Often times taking up mission and doing research on new pathogens to help cure the sick that can't afford and somehow during a reading#Lecture he gets ascended back to godhood and everyone is like ??? And even he is like ???#Well he doesn't care much about it and just continues to do what he's always done. Except that once in a while he has to take a detour#Mission to deal with ghosts and other malignant spirits. And upon one of those recurrences he finds himself aquaintanced with#The infamous Ghost King Aventurine. Who is mostly feared in heaven due to having beaten the strongest and wisest at their own games. Even#When the odds where fully against him.#As for Aventurine.#His life was harsh but as the prince had given a lot to the people#Not just education but also free them of diseases and sickness. One of which had struck his sister. He liked the prince and wanted to#Follow in giving and protecting the prosperity of the former kingdom. But the good things did not last and his family was struck in between#The many wars that took place. No matter how much refuge Kakavasha and his sister sought no place was ever#Safe enough for them.#He watched the entire world go up in flames yet somehow he could hate the prince-god for it. But rather the people who had started to#Create weapons in his name. The rest of his years he spent it as a warrior slave and then when death reached him he couldn't even go to#The afterlife since he still held so much vigor and wanted revenge to all the people who had turned his land into ashes and his family#Into bones. That is why he became a mourning ghost.#(I didn't want the kakavasha story to be so centered on ratio like it is in tgcf. Because I think it will be fun for the two of them to#Not recognize each other at first after 800 years and then when they do. Rather when aven does he's full on: oh shit it's the cute prince—#As for who was the cause of the upheaval in the kingdom and the maker of the weapons. Idk I was debating there being more than just one#Antagonist to have pulled their strings in verita's kingdom as well as be the reason Aven's sister died. So he's more revenge seeking for t#And the genius society as civil gods just spoke to me it for so perfectly. Ling wen as Ruan mei? Yeah exactly.#ratiorine#Aventio#Dr ratio

The Ghosts of Naseby/ Marling
Tumblr media
Source: Historic UK website
The Battle of Naseby took place on this day in 1645. The Royalist army of King Charles I was decisively defeated by that of Parliament, virtually bringing to an end the First English Civil War. On 14th June 1949, 304 years later, two resting cyclists were alarmed at the sight of several leather jerkined and steel helmeted men walking wearily towards them in the warm summer sun, pushing dusty carts ahead of them. Feeling inexplicably discomfited, the two tourists got back on their bikes and cycled away from the strangely attired group at pace. Only later did they discover they had stopped for a rest on the site of the battle on the day of its anniversary and that the grim figures they encountered were likely the ghosts of Naseby.
In mid June, marl used to be carved out from great pits and dug into the local soil to make it more fertile. The “marlers” were led by a Lord of the Pit or Soil, who spent much of his time extracting money from passers-by, with a great shout from the marling gag of “Largesse!” bellowed in honour of those who were willing to part with their hard earned. Once the marling was complete, the pit was garlanded and the workers would retire to the local taverns for beer and feasting. Marl lasts twenty years so these digs were not frequent affairs and do not take place now at all.

The Good Friday Presentiment: Lincoln Foretold His Own Assassination
LONG SHADOWS: More Ghosts and Haunts of the Civil War Some say this late war photo of Lincoln is the image of a man who has had a vision of his own funeral. On Good Friday in April of 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated during a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC. Far away to the north, young Mary Brennan, an Irish immigrant only recently arrived to our…
