The Proposal - Rebecca Welton x fem!reader (Part 2)
The Proposal Part 2 - Rebecca Welton x fem!reader
“Hi. I’m Mr. Gilberston. And you must be...” The man trailed off, looking down at the file in his hands. “Y/n and Rebecca. Oh what glorious times we live in, huh?” He tried to make small talk, sitting down at the desk in his office. The room was small. Tiny, compared to Rebecca’s office. The walls were blue and there were huge shelves with boxes and boxes of files.
“Yes yes, amazing times. And I can’t even begin to tell you how much we appreciate you seeing us on such short notice.” Rebecca started with a smile as the man sat down at his desk before skimming over the file in front of him.
“So… I have one question for you.” He stated, closing the file again. “Are the two of you committing fraud to avoid Ms. Welton having to sell AFC Richmond back to some Mr. Rupert Mannion?” You tried not to roll your eyes at the statement. Well, here you go.
“That is ridiculous.” You shook your head. “Where- where did you hear that?” Rebecca stuttered. “We had a phone tip this afternoon from a man named-” - “Bob Spaulding? I’m sorry. Bob is nothing but a disgruntled former employee. I do apologize. But we do know that you’re incredibly busy, so if you just give us our next step, we will be out of your hair and on our way.” Rebecca tries. She was nervous. More nervous than you expected her to be since this had been her idea.
“Ms. Welton, please.” The man offered her to take a seat in front of his desk, you immediately rushed to pull out the chair for her before taking a seat next to her.
“Let me explain to you the process that is about to unfold.” He started. “First step will be a scheduled interview. I’ll have each of you put in a room and ask every little question that a real couple would know about each other. Step two, I dig deeper. I’ll look at your phone records, talk to your neighbors etc. If your answers don’t match up at every point, you, Ms. Welton, will sell the club, indefinitely. And you, young woman will have committed a felony… punishable by a fine of a quarter million pounds and five years of prison… So, Y/n. You wanna talk to me?” That lecture hit, you were debating whether or not you should just stop pretending.
“The truth is...” You started and Rebecca turned to you, looking uneasy. “Becca and I are just two people who weren’t supposed to fall for each other. But we did. After telling her about her ex-husband’s more than frequent affairs with employees, and plotting a plan for a divorce that lead to having bottles of wine at my place, we just fell in love. Obviously, we couldn’t tell anyone at work because of my promotion coming up and it would be deeply inappropriate if I were promoted under her, while we were in a relationship.” You explained and Rebecca seemed to grow even more uncomfortable.
“So, do your parents know about that secret relationship of yours?” He asks.
“Well, I’m not on good terms with my parents, haven’t seen them in years. So no. No brothers or sisters. Yeah.” Rebecca answered for her part. “You?” Gilbertson asked. “We were planning on telling them this weekend.”Rebecca quickly intervened. “Granny’s 90th birthday and the whole family is coming together. We thought it would be a nice surprise.”
“And where is this surprise gonna happen?”
“At Y/n’s parents’ house.” - “Where is that located again?”
Deciding to jump in, seeing as the probability for Rebecca to know that was about zero, you replied instead. “Buniewice.” You replied easily. “Buniewice.” Rebecca repeated. “In Poland.” - “In Poland?” Rebecca tried to mask her surprise. Her reaction did not surprise you. You had been more than sure that she hadn’t gone over your application as she kept you around. If she did, she would have noticed your dual citizenship.
“You’re gonna go to Poland this weekend?” He asked, not really believing you. “Yes… Yeah, we’re going to Poland, that’s where… that’s where my little… that’s where my darling is from.” Rebecca stated, reaching a hand over to awkwardly pat your shoulder.
“Okay, fine. I see how this is gonna go. I will see you both at eleven o’clock. Monday morning sharp, for your scheduled interview and your answers better match up on every account.” And with that he left the office without another word. Rebecca immediately went to answer her phone ringing.
You and Rebecca left the office building the same way you entered, walking out of the big glass doors on the front of the building, Rebecca was still looking down at her phone. “Okay, so, what is going to happen is we will go all the way over there. We will pretend like we’re girlfriend and girlfriend, tell your parents we’re engaged. Uh, use the miles for the tickets. I guess I will pop up for you to fly first class. But make sure you use the miles.” Rebecca jumped from one topic to the next within seconds while multitasking with her phone still in her hand.
“Hey, why aren’t you taking notes…?” Rebecca asked once she had finally diverted her eyes from the screen of her phone. “I’m sorry, were you not in that room?” You asked her, stopping in your tracks and turning to face her. “What? What- oh, the thing you said about you being promoted? Genius! Genius. The guy completely fell for it.” Rebecca replied, storing her phone in her purse.
“I was serious.” You stated matter of factly. “I’m looking at five years in jail and a quarter million in pounds. That changes things.” - “Promote you? No, no way.” She shook her head. You had a hard time not being intimidated by her, but you did your best.
“Then I quit, and you’re screwed.” You replied easily. “Bye-bye, Rebecca. It has been a little slice of heaven.” You added, turning around and starting to walk away from her. At any other moment, you would have thought this would be a chance for you. The way it was in the books. Forced marriage but they end up falling for each other. But now you weren’t sure anymore. She didn’t even seem to care about you.
“Y/n, Y/n! Fine, fine.” You stopped. Well, that was not as hard as you thought it would be. “I’ll have you be in charge of our transfers. Fine.” You turned back around at her words. “If you do the Poland weekend and the interview, you’re gonna be in charge of transfers.” She gave in. “And not in two years, right way.” You spoke, leaving no room for arguing. “Fine.” She agreed, managing not to roll her eyes.
“And we’ll tell my family about our engagement when I want and how I want.” You added. “Now, ask me nicely to marry you.”
“What does that mean?” Rebecca asked you, looking at you confused. “You heard me. Ask me to marry you, Rebecca. I won’t need you on your knees but ask me nicely.”
“Will you marry me?” She asked, not even meeting your eyes. “No. Say it like you mean it.” You encouraged her. And then she locked eyes with you. Oh how you were a sucker for her eyes. The green was oh so captivating.
“Y/n?” She asked you, voice now a bit less annoyed. “Yes, Rebecca?” You replied. “Sweet, sweet Y/n?” - “I’m listening.”
“Would you please, cherries on top, marry me?” She asked you, sarcasm now very much present in her voice. “Hmm. I don’t really appreciate the sarcasm, but I’ll do it.” You agreed and she flashed you a small, grateful, smile. “See you at the airport tomorrow.” And with that, you left her standing alone.
And this interaction led you to where you were now. Sitting on the plane to Danzig. Little did Rebecca know that you would have to board another plane once you landed there.
“So, these are the questions that this guy will be asking us.” You spoke, only partially to yourself while Rebecca was flipping through a magazine. You sighed and looked out of the window. “Good news is I know everything about you, bad news is that you have four days to learn all this about me. So, you should… probably start studying.” You said and Rebecca took the list of questions out of your hands, starting to flip through them.
“What am I allergic to?” She asked you as if to test your knowledge. “Pine nuts.” You replied easily, not even having to think for a second. “And the full spectrum of human emotion.” You added under your breath. Still, she seemed to have caught your comment and let out a small chuckle. “Here’s a good one. Do I have any scars?” She challenges you again, quirking an eyebrow.
“You know all these answers to these questions about me?” Rebecca asked, not believing one word you were saying. “Scary isn’t it?” You asked her, still looking out of the window. “A bit.” She admitted.
“I’m pretty sure you have a tattoo. Not that anyone else would ever think you did.” You replied, remembering a call you had gotten not too long ago. “Oh, you’re sure?” She teased, a smirk on her face.
“I’m pretty sure. A month ago your dermatologist called and asked about a Q-switched laser. I did some research and found out you use these to remove tattoos. But you canceled your appointment which leads me to the conclusion that you do, in fact, have a tattoo. It’s nothing big. Probably something you got before you met Mr. Mannion seeing as you do not want to have it removed. Maybe something that reminds you of something.” You brainstormed and Rebecca had an amused smile gracing her lips as she listened to your theories. “It’s not on your feet or ankle. Arms are out too. Maybe on your back? Or maybe on your hip?” You continued but Rebecca intervened. “You know, it is very exciting for me to experience you like this.” She joked.
“Thank you.” You joked back. “You’re gonna have to tell me where it is though.” You added and Rebecca rolled her eyes, focusing back on the question catalogue. “No, I’m not.” She replied easily. “He’s gonna ask.” You kept going. “Nope, we’re done with that question.” Rebecca decided, continuing to flip through the catalogue. “On to another question. Lemme see, lemme see...” She trailed off and you diverted your attention back to the clouds surrounding the plane.
“Oh, here’s one. Whose place do we stay at, yours or mine?” Rebecca read out before answering the question herself. “That’s easy. Mine.” - “And why wouldn’t we stay at mine?” You asked.
“Uhm, because my place is bloody nice and I have the perfect views.” She easily answered. “And because you probably live at some tiny, little studio flat with stacks and stacks of Penguin Classics.” She added and you tried not to let your face fall into an inappropriate grimace.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts. We are beginning our descent into Danzig.” Came the muffled voice over the speakers. Rebecca’s face was already furrowing in confusion.
“Danzig? I thought we were going to Buniewice?” She asked, buckling her seatbelt. Her eyebrows were still furrowed in confusion as you raised your hand and gently pushed between them with your thumb, her face relaxing instantly. “We are.” You answered her question. “And how are we supposed to get there?”
Oh how you enjoyed the look on Rebecca’s face as you boarded a smaller plane. It was nothing compared to flying first class, you knew that, but it had been all you ever knew. While you were focused on the question catalogue for your interview, Rebecca just sat there, not voicing her discomfort, but putting up no effort to hide it on her face and body.
You felt uneasy as you landed. You hadn’t seen your family in a while. However the part you were concerned about the most was seeing your father again. He never seemed to be proud of anything you had accomplished. He voiced disapproval when you had decided to move to England about ten years ago. Ever since then the relationship between the two of you had been rather rocky.

Sounds like for all the lipservice the TQ+ give to being sensitive to those with mental health issues this guy didn't care about the impact of his actions on his roommate who was dealing with PTSD. When he was called out and warned that coming home late without a so much as a text first wasn't a good idea when your roommate is a gun owner he cried that he was being threatened.
By Anna Slatz February 3, 2024
A trans-identified male from Colorado is seeking asylum in Canada on the basis of his gender identity. Daria Bloodworth arrived in Canada in 2019 after claiming to have been the victim of “transphobic” crime in the United States.
Bloodworth applied for refugee status in Canada, seeking protection on the basis of transphobic persecution by Americans, American society generally, and specific individuals including a debt collector and a former roommate at Colorado State University.
In his asylum application, Bloodworth claimed that he was the victim of a transphobia-motivated crime in May of 2019 after his roommate brandished a gun at him while making transphobic statements. The asylum application states that Bloodworth feared for his life after a court refused to grant him a protective order following the incident.
“With no protection orders in place, Ms. Bloodworth states the roommate stalked her, including by standing outside her residence with a gun, and he pursued her despite changing residences twice.Ms. Bloodworth states she called the police or went to the police station to report events of stalking behaviour, but did not receive protection. She was told her former roommate had the right to open carry a firearm. Eventually, she stopped calling the police,” the Citizenship and Immigration case reads.
Reduxx has reviewed bodycam footage showing the Fort Collins Police Service responding to the purported transphobic incident in 2019.
The 2-hour long video starts by showing Bloodworth being interviewed by police at the station after coming to report the crime himself. In the interview, the three police officers appear visibly confused and express difficulty in understanding Bloodworth’s account of events after he claims his roommate had threatened him “with a gun.” His story appears to change somewhat every time an officer asks him to clarify details of his claims.
Following the initial interview with Bloodworth, police go to the residence to speak with the roommate, a young male who identifies himself as a military veteran. The man reveals that Bloodworth had been a problem roommate as he did not pay his bills, frequently stole from the other residents, and would often come home in the middle of the night without informing the others he would be out.
This had led to concerns about the roommate’s PTSD being triggered, as he would often be woken up at early hours to find the front door handle being jiggled and become anxious, unsure if the home was being broken into.
The roommate says that they had been struggling with Bloodworth’s behavior for months and actively attempting to evict him from the residence. He explains that an argument had finally broken out that day after his frustration reached a tipping point with respect to Bloodworth’s conduct. Specifically, Bloodworth’s lack of financial contribution to the household, and his tendency to come home during the night with no notice or consideration for his roommate’s anxiety.
“I said — there’s a gun in the basement, you could get shot not addressing coming home at 4 in the morning through the door I sleep 30 feet from. Could you at least give us a heads up [when you are coming home]? Can you not be weird and sneaky like this?” the roommate says to police, obviously exasperated.
Bloodworth as seen in the body cam footage from May of 2019.
“So you were saying, ‘if I don’t know you’re coming home at 4 in the morning, you could end up getting shot?” police clarified.
“Yes! Because it’s kind of crazy,” the roommate insisted. “I just want a heads up.”
“So you don’t think you are getting burglarized, right?” the officer asks, to which the roommate says “yes.”
The roommate notes there was an old hunting rifle in the home’s basement, but said it was not loaded and there was no ammunition in the residence.
During the police interview, the roommate refers to Bloodworth by “she/her” pronouns and his preferred name. He also calls Bloodworth a “woman” at various points during the interview. This calls into question Bloodworth’s claims to both police and Canadian immigration officials that he had been subjected to a transphobia-motivated crime.
The roommate also states that Bloodworth had frequently become enraged at the other residents in the home when they requested he pay his portion of the bills, and suggests that Bloodworth threatened to sue them for “pain and suffering” when they changed the WiFi password.
The young man later concedes to having been wrong to refer to the gun in the basement during their argument, and calmly offers himself up to any charges. The case against him would be dismissed less than two months later.
Though Bloodworth told Canadian immigration officials that the roommate “open carried” a gun, the roommate told police he did not own one himself. Bloodworth also stated that the roommate later “stalked” him, but there is no substantiation to support that claim. However, following the “threats” incident, Bloodworth repeatedly posted the roommate’s full name to social media, along with videos showing his face.
Bloodworth continued to live and work in Colorado until November of 2019, when he arrived in Canada and filed for refugee protection.
In October of 2022, the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) rejected Bloodworth’s claim for asylum, determining he had adequate rights and protection back in the United States. He then appealed the decision, and the Refugee Appeals Division (RAD) ruled in his favor.
RAD member Dilani Mohan concluded that “the RPD failed to consider how Colorado’s open carry gun laws combined with the general climate of anti-trans hatred growing in the US could make [her] perpetually vulnerable and at risk to her life.”
Mohan also noted high rates of “discrimination and violence” in Maine, New Jersey, Illinois and Nevada and said that while New York City might be an option, the move would force Bloodworth into poverty.
“The RPD failed to consider how Colorado’s open carry gun laws combined with the general climate of anti-trans hatred growing in the US could make [her] perpetually vulnerable and at risk to her life,” Mohan wrote.
But Bloodworth’s victory was short-lived, as this week, a Federal Court ruled that the RAD incorrectly claimed that Colorado authorities were incapable of protecting Bloodworth, or that he couldn’t safely reside elsewhere in the United States.
Bloodworth — who now lives in the Yukon Territory — says he plans to appeal the ruling to the Federal Court of Appeal in hopes of being formally granted refugee status.
Since arriving in Canada, Bloodworth has changed his legal name from Véronique Marie Bellamy in an apparent effort to obscure his identity in the event his immigration attempts did not go in his favor.
On his My Little Pony-themed social media feed, Bloodworth advertises himself as an “exile from America” and an “author of queer fiction.” He states he is “trying to pursue a quick bachelor’s degree to be able to get into medical school,” and is also investing in cryptocurrency in an effort to make enough money to fund his gender transition.
Bloodworth claims to have been fired by TD Canada Trust bank in 2023 for being a “whistleblower” but it is unclear what he blew the whistle on. His LinkedIn shows he worked at the company for approximately 1 year as a Lead Customer Experience Associate.
His social media feed includes snipes at Harry Potter author JK Rowling and those who participated in last year’s march against gender ideology.
In July of 2023, Bloodworth credited seeing the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies with providing him motivation to continue fighting for refugee status in Canada.

Five months ago, software engineer Shikhar Sachdev adopted a peculiar hobby. While his friends met for drinks or played FIFA 23 to unwind after work, he would come home, boot up his laptop, and spend hours filling out job applications, for sport.
Sachdev is content with his job at a San Francisco fintech company, but he writes a career blog in his spare time and had noticed a recurring sentiment: Job hunting these days is the worst. Friends described returning home from an exhausting day of work they hated, applying for new positions, and quickly growing discouraged by clunky application software and a low response rate. Research suggests the frustration is widespread: 92 percent of candidates abandon online job applications before completing them, according to the recruitment platform Appcast.
“You might hate your boss. But if you think that searching for jobs is worse, you're never going to change,” Sachdev says. “I wanted to try to put some data behind the claim that job hunting sucks.”
Sachdev set himself the challenge of applying to 500 software engineering jobs to observe exactly what made the endeavor more or less frustrating. Halfway through, however, he hit a snag. “I wanted to chop my head off,” Sachdev says. He scaled back his target to a still brain-melting 250 jobs across a range of industries and company sizes, chosen largely at random—companies he’d seen on billboards, for instance, or friends’ employers.
Sachdev timed each application from start to finish and for consistency always applied directly through a company’s career page—he ended up spending about 11 hours total filling applications. Since he wasn’t looking for a new position, he always stopped short of clicking “Submit” on a completed application, except for a few choice roles that piqued his interest. (He landed three interviews, but didn’t pursue the jobs.) He aimed to make each application serviceable, but wasn't as thorough as a truly ambitious or desperate job seeker would be, so he figures the times he logged are underestimates.
Sachdev found it took an average of 2 minutes and 42 seconds to fill out a job application—but that doesn’t include time spent identifying suitable roles, and the time could vary widely from job to job. The longest took more than 10 minutes, the shortest less than 20 seconds. Much of this variation sprang from the particularities of applicant tracking software.
Applying to work at a company that used Workday, for instance, took 128 percent longer than average for similarly sized companies in the same industry. Workday spokesperson Nina Oestlien called customer service a “core value” at the company and says that application timing is determined by how customers configure their applications. (Disclosure: WIRED owner Condé Nast uses Workday. Also, we’re hiring!)
Starting Over
Sachdev’s job hunting obsession was born partly from rejection. Originally from Geneva, Switzerland, he graduated from UC Berkeley in 2019 with a degree in environmental economics and philosophy. Most of his friends lived in the Bay Area, and career opportunities in the region abounded, so he resolved to stay.
As Sachdev’s senior year wound down, he began furiously applying for local jobs. But his heart sank each time he reached the portion of an application that asked if he needed visa sponsorship. Since he lacked US citizenship, he needed an employer to sponsor him, likely with a specialty H-1B worker visa. “When I would click the H-1B box, my application would go straight into the garbage,” he says. “I was getting rejections four minutes after I applied.”
But Sachdev has the tenacity to power through the uttermost tedium for months on end. And he discovered what looked like a loophole. Foreigners who earn STEM degrees from certain US institutions can work in the country for up to three years without a visa under a federal program called Optional Practical Training. “Who stays at their first job for more than three years?” he rationalized. So when the visa sponsorship question popped up in an application for a product manager role at a major tech company he wanted to work for, he clicked “no.”
After he landed an interview, Sachdev spent 40 hours scouring job sites for tips, cramming his notebook full of hypothetical questions and their responses, compiling a presentation the company required—and totally neglecting his coursework. Half a dozen interviews later, he got the job. His heart soared, but not for long. When he explained his immigration status to the recruiter, she rescinded the offer. Sachdev started over, eventually landing a job with a startup willing to sponsor his H-1B visa, and decided to parlay his experience into a career blog offering help to other hapless job questers.
Job hunters have long complained about the process, but it developed fresh annoyances after moving online starting in the mid-’90s, says Chris Russell, managing director of the recruitment consultancy RecTech Media. Online job boards like Monster and CareerBuilder flooded companies with candidates, giving rise to applicant tracking systems built to help recruiters manage the deluge.
These systems promised to save recruiters time by automatically ranking and filtering applicants based on keywords. From the perspective of applicants required to laboriously enter their information into the software, they felt like a new barrier. “These systems were built with the companies in mind,” says Russell. “They never really considered the user experience from the job seeker’s point of view.” A cottage industry sprang up of tools and résumé whisperers promising to help job seekers get past the automated scanners.
In recent years, new features like psychological assessments and “digital interviews,” in which applicants answer prepared questions into their webcams, only placed more barriers between candidates and human decisionmakers. Meanwhile, the fundamentals of hiring remain stuck in the past, says Scott Dobroski, a career trends expert at jobs platform Indeed. It takes three and a half months for most Indeed users to find a job, he says. “All the other parts of our lives have sped up. The hiring process has not caught up.”
Time Wasters
While job hunters have much to gripe about, from “ghost jobs” to the dreaded “résumé black hole,” Sachdev decided to focus his efforts on the initial application process. He identified three main factors that affected the time it took to apply: the size of a company, the industry it was part of, and the applicant tracking software it used.
Applicant tracking software was a major source of Sachdev’s frustration. The most common systems he encountered were Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, Lever, and Phenom, which adds AI-powered features on top of systems like Workday. More established systems such as Workday and Taleo redirected him away from the careers page and made him create a separate account for each application, adding significant time and vexation. By the end of his 250 applications, he had 83 separate accounts.
Newer offerings such as Greenhouse and Lever spared him some of these frustrations. Applications through Lever, for instance, took 42 percent less time to complete than the average for similarly sized companies in the same industry.
Sachdev also spent many excruciating minutes retyping information he’d already uploaded on his résumé because software would misread it. Workday, for instance, would routinely populate the education field with “Munich Business School” even though Sachdev’s résumé clearly says he graduated from non-soundalike UC Berkeley. “Sometimes it's not even the time,” he says. “It's the mental fatigue of having to do it every single time.”
The longest application to fill out was for the US Postal Service, clocking in at 10 minutes and 12 seconds, while the shortest was that of hedge fund Renaissance Technologies, which requested only his name and résumé and consumed a mere 17 seconds. In general, Sachdev found that government applications took the longest—a trend that Indeed’s data backs up—followed by aerospace and consulting jobs. Younger industries such as online banks, AI firms, and crypto companies were amongst the least time-consuming. Legacy banks, for instance, took about four times longer to apply to than their newer online counterparts.
Sachdev also found applications to large companies more time-consuming than for smaller firms. In general, a doubling of company size added 5 percent to the average application time.
While the process was largely an exercise in repetition, Sachdev encountered a few creative takes on a musty old format. Plaid, a fintech company that provides APIs to connect software with bank accounts, invited applicants to apply via API. (Sachdev opted for the old-fashioned route, for consistency.) The gaming company Roblox let candidates apply in-game.
While hiring software has historically been stacked in employers’ favor, more job seekers are using their own forms of automation. Bots and tools like LazyApply use text-generation technology like that behind ChatGPT to automatically mass apply to jobs, to the likely chagrin of overwhelmed recruiters. When Sachdev posted his results on discussion site Hacker News, one commenter claimed to use bots to fill out job applications and ChatGPT to write cover letters and correspond with recruiters, fully taking over only at the interview stage. “Can you blame him?” Sachdev says. “Because the companies are doing it too. Their résumé parsers, their application tracking software, and their tools are also using AI. So it's almost as if the applicant now has this weapon they can use against the companies.”
An AI arms race that floods the job market with unserious applicants and insurmountable filtering tools is in nobody’s interest, however. Indeed’s Dobroski says some platforms, including his own, have begun rolling out a new approach that aims to save time on both sides, albeit also by leaning on algorithms. Instead of sending hundreds of résumés into the void and hoping for the best—“spray and pray” he calls it—candidates can list their skills, qualifications, and preferences and let AI suggest suitable jobs to apply for. “The matching really speeds up the hiring process, and it connects the candidate with employers that they otherwise may not even have considered,” he says.
Sachdev has his own ideas for what would make job applications more productive for both seekers and recruiters. First off, he advises applicants to save time and mental anguish by prioritizing employers that use simpler software like Lever and Greenhouse. For jobs he’s really serious about, he’ll try to make a human connection with the hiring manager on LinkedIn.
There’s a saying Sachdev likes, from computer science professor Randy Pausch: The brick walls are there for a reason. Facing and surmounting hurdles can help a person discover how much they want something. But if an employer erects too many barriers, “is an applicant really going to think, ‘That brick wall is there for a reason?’ Or is the applicant going to exit out of your website and go apply somewhere else?” Sachdev says. “I think it's the latter.”

sometimes i do wonder about identity politics, and whether they truly serve us well. but then i remember! i live in a nasty queer progressive bubble that's not at ALL representative of reality.
If you do live in America, I can't recommend this article highly enough. Nikole Hannah Jones is inevitably going to be written down in the annals of history as one of the great writers of our time. She really truly blows the whole issue wide open, every time.
Excerpt:
Thus, the first time the court took up the issue of affirmative action, it took away the policy’s power. The court determined that affirmative action could not be used to redress the legacy of racial discrimination that Black Americans experienced, or the current systemic inequality that they were still experiencing. Instead, it allowed that some consideration of a student’s racial background could stand for one reason only: to achieve desired “diversity” of the student body. Powell referred to Harvard’s affirmative-action program, which he said had expanded to include students from other disadvantaged backgrounds, such as those from low-income families. He quoted an example from the plan, which said: “The race of an applicant may tip the balance in his favor, just as geographic origin or a life spent on a farm may tip the balance in other candidates’ cases. A farm boy from Idaho can bring something to Harvard College that a Bostonian cannot offer. Similarly, a Black student can usually bring something that a white person cannot offer.” But, of course, a (white) farm boy from Idaho did not descend from people who were enslaved, because they were farmers from Idaho. There were not two centuries of case law arguing over the inherent humanity and rights of farm boys from Idaho. There was no sector of the law, no constitutional provision, that enshrined farm boys from Idaho as property who could be bought and sold. Farm boys from Idaho had no need to engage in a decades-long movement to gain basic rights of citizenship, including the fundamental right to vote. Farm boys from Idaho had not, until just a decade earlier, been denied housing, jobs, the ability to sit on juries and access to the ballot. Farm boys from Idaho had not been forced to sue for the right to attend public schools and universities.

Tips on getting USA Visa approved!
To study in the US, you require a student visa in addition to having excellent marks. However, obtaining a visa can be challenging, so we are here to help.
Visa & Immigration Apr 1, 2023 0 411 Add to Reading List
You must apply for a student visa if you intend to study in the United States as an undergraduate or graduate student. The type of study program you will enroll in determines the visa type you require. Each year, several international students seek to study full-time at US colleges. To study in the US, you require a student visa in addition to having excellent marks. However, obtaining a visa can be challenging, so we're here to help.
ReadWHAT TO DO IF YOUR STUDENT VISA GETS REJECTED?
All overseas applicants, including those without US citizenship or permanent residency, are required to first obtain a US student visa. This ensures that they lawfully attend the university in the US. This international student visa enables you to temporarily remain in the US while participating in an authorized academic exchange programme, language programme, or school.
We will provide the fundamentals of visas and how to obtain a student visa for the United States in this blog. We'll also provide you with some pointers and resources you can use to make sure the procedure for applying for a visa goes as easily as possible.
The process for applying for an F-1 visa is similar to and identical to that of an M-1 and J-1 visa. Therefore, the three US student visa categories are all compatible with the application process described below.
Here are the general steps for getting a US Visa:
1. Apply to a US institution: You must first apply to and be accepted by a school, college, or university in the United States. The institution will provide you with a Form I-20, which is a document you need to apply for a student visa.
2. Acceptance to a US educational institution: You must be accepted into a US educational institution and have a valid Form I-20, a document that verifies your acceptance and outlines the details of your program.
3. SEVIS fee: You must pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee, which is a fee that supports the system that maintains information on international students and exchange visitors.
4. Submit DS-160 Form: You must complete the DS-160 form, an online nonimmigrant visa application.
5. Passport: You must have a valid passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of your intended stay in the US.
6. Application fee: You must pay the visa application fee which is non-refundable.
7. Interview: You must attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate in your home country. Wait times for interviews can vary depending on the location, so applying well before your planned departure date is recommended.
8. Attend the interview: You will need to attend the visa interview in person. During the interview, a consular officer will ask questions about your intended study program, ties to your home country, and your ability to fund your education.
9. Wait for your visa: If your visa application is approved, your passport will be returned to you with the visa attached. If it is denied, you will receive a letter explaining the reason for the denial.
In addition to these steps, you may also need to provide additional documentation, such as academic transcripts, proof of financial support, and evidence of ties to your home country.
After you finish your course, the student visa expires at a given stipulated time. You will have to leave the US at that point. You may later visit the US on a different visa, which is appropriate for your circumstance or situation.
How can you be sure there won't be any issues along the way?
Follow the advice we've provided below to make sure your visa application procedure goes smoothly.

If you’re based in Melbourne, Victoria, or Perth, this guide will provide insights into the Canada PR process tailored to your needs.
What is Canada PR?
Canada PR is a status granted to individuals who are not Canadian citizens but have been authorized to live and work in Canada without time restrictions. A PR card serves as proof of your status and is necessary for international travel. PR holders can apply for citizenship after meeting certain residency requirements.
Benefits of Canada PR
Work and Live Anywhere in Canada: PR holders are not tied to a specific employer or region.
Social Benefits: Access to healthcare and social security programs.
Path to Citizenship: PR is a stepping stone to becoming a Canadian citizen.
Family Sponsorship: PR holders can sponsor their family members for residency.
Popular Pathways to Canada PR for Melbourne, Victoria, and Perth Residents
1. Express Entry Program
The Express Entry system is one of the fastest and most popular routes for skilled workers. It includes three main categories:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): Suitable for professionals with work experience and qualifications.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): Ideal for skilled tradespersons.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For those with Canadian work experience.
Applicants from Melbourne, Victoria, and Perth often succeed in this program due to Australia’s focus on skilled professionals, which aligns with Canada’s criteria.
2. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Under the PNP, Canadian provinces and territories nominate candidates who meet specific labor market needs. For example, skilled professionals in fields like healthcare, IT, and education are often in high demand. This pathway is ideal for applicants who prefer to settle in specific regions of Canada.
3. Family Sponsorship Program
Residents of Victoria, Melbourne, and Perth with close family members in Canada may be eligible for sponsorship programs.
4. Study-to-PR Pathway
Many students from Australia, particularly Victoria and Perth, choose to study in Canada and later transition to PR. This pathway provides a dual advantage: a Canadian education and work experience.
Tips for Australia-Based Applicants
Hire a Consultant: Navigating the PR process can be complex. Consider hiring a professional immigration consultant familiar with applications from Melbourne, Victoria, and Perth.
Prepare Documentation: Ensure all documents, including IELTS scores, Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), and work experience letters, are in order.
Focus on CRS Score: The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score determines your eligibility for Express Entry. Aim for a high score through language proficiency and additional qualifications.
Stay Updated: Immigration policies can change. Regularly check updates on Canadian immigration programs relevant to applicants from Australia.
Conclusion

How to Find the Best Immigration Consultant for Your Needs
When it comes to immigration, whether you're applying for a student visa, work permit, or permanent residency, the process can be daunting. With constantly changing laws, mountains of paperwork, and strict deadlines, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. That's where an immigration consultant can help. They offer expert advice, handle complicated paperwork, and guide you through the entire process to ensure everything is done right. However, finding the right immigration consultant for your needs is crucial. Here’s how to go about it.
What Is an Immigration Consultant?
An immigration consultant is a professional who assists clients with the immigration process. Their role typically includes providing advice on visa applications, permanent residency, or other immigration matters. While they can't represent you in court (unlike immigration lawyers), they help with paperwork, filing documents, and understanding the rules and requirements for immigration.
In many countries, immigration consultants must be certified and registered with relevant governing bodies, which ensures that they follow ethical standards and are qualified to offer immigration-related services.
Why You Should Hire an Immigration Consultant
While it's possible to handle your immigration application on your own, there are several advantages to working with a consultant:
Expert Knowledge Immigration laws and procedures can be complicated, especially if you’re not familiar with the system. An immigration consultant has the necessary expertise to navigate this process and can provide insight into things like eligibility, document preparation, and application procedures.
Minimized Risk of Errors Even small mistakes or missed deadlines in the immigration process can lead to delays or rejections. An immigration consultant ensures that all documentation is complete and correctly filled out, significantly reducing the risk of errors.
Personalized Support An immigration consultant will assess your individual situation and provide tailored advice. Whether you're seeking a student visa or planning to move with your family, the consultant will ensure you follow the best path suited to your needs.
Save Time and Effort The paperwork and bureaucracy involved in immigration can be time-consuming. An immigration consultant handles much of the administrative burden, saving you valuable time and effort while ensuring that deadlines are met.
Increased Chances of Success With their experience, consultants understand exactly what immigration authorities expect from applicants. Their expertise can increase your chances of having your application approved without unnecessary delays or complications.
How to Find the Right Immigration Consultant
Finding the right immigration consultant is essential to ensure you receive the best possible assistance. Here are some tips to help you choose the right consultant:
Check Qualifications and Certifications The first step in choosing an immigration consultant is verifying that they are certified and licensed by the relevant regulatory authority. For example, in Canada, immigration consultants are regulated by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC), and in the United States, some consultants may be accredited by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). These certifications ensure that the consultant adheres to professional standards and is qualified to offer immigration services.
Look for Experience The more experience a consultant has, the better equipped they will be to handle any complications that may arise during the immigration process. Experienced consultants have likely dealt with a wide range of cases and can offer solutions based on their past work. Always ask about their success rate and experience in handling cases similar to yours.
Read Reviews and Ask for References Client feedback is an excellent way to gauge a consultant’s reliability and professionalism. Look for reviews or testimonials on their website or trusted platforms. If you're still unsure, ask the consultant for references from past clients. Speaking directly to people who have worked with the consultant can give you valuable insight into what to expect.
Assess Communication and Responsiveness Immigration is often a time-sensitive process, so effective communication is key. The consultant should be easy to reach, responsive to your questions, and clear in their explanations. Make sure they keep you updated on your application’s progress and are available to address any concerns that may arise.
Transparent Fees Be clear on how much you will be charged for services upfront. A good consultant will be transparent about their fees and any additional costs involved in the immigration process. Avoid consultants who make vague promises or offer unusually low fees, as they may lack the necessary expertise or could be cutting corners.
Trust Your Instincts Ultimately, your relationship with an immigration consultant should be one of trust. If something doesn’t feel right—whether it’s the consultant’s attitude, their level of professionalism, or their communication style—it’s important to listen to your instincts. Choose a consultant who makes you feel comfortable, reassured, and confident in their ability to handle your case.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
While most immigration consultants are reputable, some may attempt to take advantage of vulnerable clients. Here are some red flags to watch for:
Promises of Guaranteed Outcomes No immigration consultant can guarantee that your application will be approved. Be wary of consultants who promise a 100% success rate.
Requests for Unusual Payments Be cautious of consultants who ask for large sums of money upfront or only accept cash payments. It’s best to have clear payment agreements and to ensure the fees align with industry standards.
Lack of Transparency If a consultant is unwilling to provide clear, written information about their services or fees, or is vague when answering your questions, this could be a warning sign.
Unlicensed or Unregulated Never work with a consultant who is not registered with a relevant regulatory body. You can often verify a consultant’s credentials online through the governing authority’s website.
Conclusion
Choosing the right immigration consultant can have a significant impact on the success of your application. With the right expert by your side, you can navigate the complex immigration system with confidence and peace of mind. By doing your research, checking credentials, and ensuring clear communication, you can find the best immigration consultant for your needs and increase your chances of a successful immigration journey.

Navigating the Path to Citizenship: How Atlanta Immigration Lawyers Assist with Naturalization
Becoming a U.S. citizen is a significant milestone for immigrants who have established their lives in the United States. The naturalization process, while rewarding, can also be complex and intimidating without proper guidance. In Atlanta, immigration lawyers play an essential role in helping individuals navigate this journey, ensuring they meet all legal requirements and successfully achieve citizenship.
This article explores the naturalization process, the challenges applicants may face, and the invaluable assistance provided by immigration lawyers in Atlanta.
What is Naturalization?
Naturalization is the legal process through which a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) becomes a U.S. citizen. U.S. citizenship offers numerous benefits, including the right to vote, eligibility for federal jobs, access to government benefits, and the ability to sponsor family members for immigration.
To qualify for naturalization, applicants must meet several criteria, including:
Being at least 18 years old.
Holding a green card for at least five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen).
Physically residing in the U.S. for at least half of the required time.
Demonstrating good moral character.
Passing English language and U.S. civics tests.
Taking the Oath of Allegiance.
While the process may seem straightforward, many applicants encounter obstacles that can delay or jeopardize their path to citizenship.
Challenges in the Naturalization Process
Complex Application FormsForm N-400, the Application for Naturalization, requires detailed information about an applicant’s background, travel history, and legal status. Errors or omissions can lead to delays or denials.
Criminal History or Legal IssuesEven minor legal infractions or misunderstandings about good moral character requirements can complicate an application.
Language and Civics Test RequirementsSome applicants struggle to pass the required English and U.S. civics exams, particularly if English is not their first language.
Eligibility ConcernsMisunderstandings about residency requirements or time spent outside the U.S. can result in ineligibility.

Sworn Translation in Pune: Your Comprehensive Guide
In an increasingly interconnected world, accurate and certified translations play a crucial role in bridging language barriers. Whether you're submitting legal documents abroad, applying for foreign universities, or dealing with official paperwork in Pune, sworn translations are indispensable. This article explores the nuances of sworn translation in Pune, its importance, and how to get reliable services in the city.
What is Sworn Translation?
Sworn translation, also known as certified translation, is an official translation of documents by a translator authorized by a government or legal authority. These translations carry legal validity and are often required for official purposes, such as immigration, legal proceedings, academic applications, or business transactions.
In India, sworn translators are authorized to ensure that the translated document is accurate and faithfully represents the original. The translation is signed, stamped, and often accompanied by a certification letter to confirm its authenticity.
Why Do You Need Sworn Translation in Pune?
Pune, as a thriving educational and business hub, sees a high demand for sworn translations. Here are some common scenarios where sworn translation services in Pune are essential:
Immigration Processes: If you are applying for a visa, citizenship, or permanent residency in another country, official documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates, or police clearances need to be translated by a sworn translator.
Academic Purposes: Students applying to universities abroad often need sworn translations of their academic transcripts, degree certificates, and letters of recommendation.
Legal Proceedings: Sworn translations are vital for presenting foreign-language documents in Indian courts or submitting Indian documents abroad for legal cases.
Business Expansion: Businesses expanding internationally may require translations of contracts, agreements, patents, or other legal documents to comply with local regulations.
How to Find Reliable Sworn Translation Services in Pune?
When looking for sworn translation services in Pune, it is essential to choose a provider with the right qualifications, expertise, and reliability. Here are some tips to find the best services:
Look for Certified Translators: Ensure the translator is authorized and recognized by a competent authority. In India, this could include professionals registered with notarial offices or government-certified agencies.
Check Experience and Specialization: Different types of documents require specific expertise. A translator specializing in legal documents may not be equally proficient in technical or academic translations. Choose a service with experience in the specific type of document you need.
Verify Reviews and Recommendations: Online reviews, testimonials, and recommendations from previous clients can give you a clear picture of the quality and reliability of a translation service.
Ask About Timelines: Sworn translations often come with strict deadlines. Ensure the provider can deliver within your required timeframe without compromising on quality.
Compare Costs: While quality should never be compromised, comparing rates across multiple service providers ensures you get value for your money.
Benefits of Hiring Sworn Translators in Pune
Opting for a professional sworn translation service in Pune offers several advantages:
Accuracy and Reliability: Sworn translators are trained professionals with expertise in their fields, ensuring precise translations that maintain the meaning and context of the original document.
Legal Recognition: Documents translated by sworn translators are legally recognized in India and abroad, making them acceptable for official purposes.
Confidentiality: Professional translators follow strict confidentiality protocols, ensuring your sensitive information remains secure.
Time Efficiency: With their expertise and resources, sworn translators can complete translations efficiently, saving you time during urgent processes.
