Citizen Promaster 1000M Professional Diver Review

The first thing that catches your eye when you first see this Citizen watch is the case. This 52.5mm x 21.4mm case is built with Citizen's "Super Titanium" alliance for scratch resistance, lightweight, and durability.

The bezel is coated with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC), and the sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating. The bezel has a 'saw blade' design, so it can be rotated easily, even when wearing thick diving gloves. This unidirectional bezel features an elapsed time display and lock.

The locking mechanism prevents the bezel from accidentally bumping and affecting the accuracy of the elapsed time display. You may see an orange strip when the lock is unlocked. This visual indication tells you exactly when the bezel is locked in place. A similar orange strip can be seen when the screw-down crown is loosened.

Functions

This dive watch has a date display at 3 o'clock and a power reserve indicator at 9 o'clock. The power reserve indicator lets divers dive worry-free because they know precisely how long the watch runs without lights. The Citizen Promaster 1000M Professional Diver watch also has a helium release valve at 10 o'clock on the side of the case.

This helium release valve releases helium gas that enters the watch during deep diving, preventing damage or rupture of the movement. As you may have noticed, the hour markers are pretty significant.

The added lumens and increased size make the time easy to read, even in less-than-ideal conditions. The outline of the minute hand is bright orange, making it easy to distinguish between the hour and minute hands.

What is ISO compliant, and what are its Requirements?

ISO watch is a certified diving watch tested to ensure it is resistant to saltwater and reliable even underwater. ISO 6425 certification also performs tests for resistance to magnetism, impact resistance, external force resistance, and thermal shock resistance.

Finally, there is a test to see if the watch continues to work after spending 15 days in a pressurized chamber. This chamber contains a mixture of helium and oxygen (or 100% helium gas) and returns to atmospheric pressure within 3 minutes after high-speed decompression.

If the watch passes these stringent requirements, it may display a depth rating after the word "diver." In this case, the Citizen Promaster Diver is marked "Professional Diver's 1000m" on the side of the case.

購入して以来、かれこれ２０年以上が経っていますが、今も定期的に電池を取り換えて使い続けているダイバーズウォッチ。この時計は、表記のとおり200m防水の仕様で、いわゆるスクーバダイビングの環境下における使用に耐えるものとなっています。

ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、圧縮空気のボンベを通じて呼吸をするダイビングでは、圧力低下により体内の窒素が急激に膨張して生じる減圧症を避けるため、潜水深度に応じて、水面へ浮上する前に一定の水深下で一定の時間（減圧時間）を過ごさなくてはなりません。上の画像は、沖縄県の八重山諸島に属する西表島で潜った際のもので、タンク１本分を潜���、水中での減圧時間を経て、海面へ浮上する際に撮影した一枚です。

普段の日常では生活防水程度が普通なのであまり意識することはないと思いますが、ダイバーズウォッチの防水機能は、一般用耐水時計のJIS規格（ISO 2281/JIS B 7021）における１種潜水時計として規定されています。冒頭の私の時計は、空気潜水用200m防水に相当します。これ以上の高い水圧下での使用に耐えるものは、２種潜水時計として規定されるもので、飽和潜水を行う環境下に相当します。

飽和潜水（Saturation diving）とは、高い圧力の環境に身体をさ���しながら体内の窒素などの不活性ガスを飽和状態（体の中にそれ以上のガスが溶け込まない状態）にすることで、100mを超える大深度へ潜水する技術を指します。理論上は、700mを超える大深度まで潜水が可能と言われています。

前回の投稿で、アフリカ大陸で２番目に長いコンゴ川の下流域で、瀕死状態で魚が浮き上がってくる原因が減圧症と考えられるという研究を紹介しましたが、河川では世界でも他に例のない200mという深い水深を有しているため、通常の潜水では到達不可能です。このような大深度の場合に、飽和潜水の技術が登場します。

日本は、飽和潜水の領域では世界的にも高い水準の技術を保持しているとされています。その一つに、海上自衛隊の潜水医学実験隊という組織があげられます。これは横須賀基地田浦地区に所在する防衛大臣直轄の部隊で、2008年5月には、瀬戸内海南西部に位置する豊後水道の南方海域で450mという大深度での飽和潜水を実施しており、これは世界第２位の記録とされます（世界第１位は、フランス海軍とフランス・マルセイユ開発会社が1988年に達成した、534mという深度）。現在、日本の海上自衛隊は、400mレベルの飽和潜水を持続的に実施できる、世界的に見ても数少ない組織の一つとされ、非常に高いレベルの飽和潜水技術が維持されていると言われています。

「当部隊の潜水員は救助ダイバーのように表立った活動はほとんどありませんが、450mを安全に潜れる技術、その深度を継続し続ける技術は、西太平洋で一般企業を含めてどこにもありません。それが我々のモチベーションであり、そのことを隊員にしっかり認識させるのが私の役割だと思っています。

海上自衛隊の潜水医学実験隊を例に、飽和潜水について記してみましたが、潜水といえば、いわゆるレジャーダイビングとしてのスクーバダイビング（スキューバダイビング）や、海上保安庁における潜水士の潜水任務などが一般的には知られている一方で、飽和潜水というのはあまり聞きなれない人がやはり多いと思います。私たちの普段の日常生活でお目にかかることはほとんどないでしょう。

一方で飽和潜水は、ダムの工事、海底油田の採掘や海上プラントの工事、瀬戸大橋などの海上の大規模構造物の工事、水力発電所や火力発電所などの導水トンネルの工事など、様々な社会インフラを支える必須の基盤技術の一つでもあります。
