If I had a nickel for every movie I saw in March of 2024 about lesbians, cars, and dead guys, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
#drive away dolls#love lies bleeding#if i had a nickel#film#film review#ethan coen#rose glass#margaret qualley#geraldine viswanathan#kristen stewart#katy o'brian#lesbian#lesbian film#queer cinema#i love how these movies aren't even really being marketed as just queer movies#they're just movies#drive away dolls was fun and made me laugh a lot#love lies bleeding kinda made me nauseous and nearly gave me a panic attack#so i think they both accomplished what they were supposed to

Hello, my name is Mahmoud Abdel Shafi. I'm 38 years old. From Gaza City. He is married and has 4 daughters, my mother and my sisters. It was subjected to one of the most dangerous air attacks. While we were in Gaza, after the army entered by land, we were left without a hospital. After we were displaced to the central Gaza Strip, we suffered a lot. From displacement, cold weather, and scarcity of water, food and medicine.
Unfortunately, my children were suffering from diseases due to lack of basic materials and cold. My mother also suffered from a lack of medicine. Overcrowding in hospitals and lack of facilities prevent us from obtaining appropriate health care, and now we live in a plastic tent that does not protect us from the cold of winter in light of the lack of clothes and blankets.

#might go again#there were only 8 people in the cinema hall on a saturday morning#not sure if thats the lack of marketing or a result of a boycott#the comments under the cinema ads keep calling for a boycott of him because of that snl skit

So, I don’t know if I’m the only one who noticed this, but with the exception of Barbie, am I the only one who thinks most movies recently have been really poorly marketed?
Like, Oppenheimer was a critical success but I think we can agree the marketing team did an abysmal job - like Christopher Nolan’s name definitely sold plenty of tickets but for the most part, it seems they just let the Barbieheimer memes carry them to the finish line.
Now, I’m not sure if this is related to the strike, if marketing teams for movies completed before it but not released yet are striking or if they’re one of the exceptions that was carved out - which, if they’re striking, good for them, but if not, I don’t think they’re doing very good jobs. I think a good example of this is A Haunting In Venice. This movie comes out in less than a month, and I haven’t seen a single trailer for this movie despite going to the movies several times over the past few months, and while my local theatre does have a poster up for it, this is it.
Now, this is a bad poster. The only thing it’s inspired in us is confusion. After Indiana Jones and Barbie and all the Ghibli Fest movies we’ve gone to we’ve stood and looked at this poster and all we’ve felt is confusion. I mean, we recognized that that’s the actor who played Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express, but did that mean this was another one of those or is it a mere coincidence that he’s in another movie? Actors do that, you know, they play multiple roles. And especially since the Agatha Christie book this is based on is actually called something different, it really doesn’t convey enough information to actually get people interested, I feel.
So I took five minutes and improved it. I feel this poster is 50% more likely to sell tickets because it’s at least 75% more informative and has 100% more false advertising because I couldn’t resist.
#a haunting in Venice#Agatha Christie#Tina fey#michelle yeoh#kenneth branagh#Taylor swift#like I’m not a marketing major or anything#but I really feel like so many movies recently have fallen short#and after the runaway success of Mario and Barbie#we can no longer blame the pandemic#marketing is just… marketing is dropping the ball these days#what’s gotten me into the theatre lately?#well mainly Ghibli fest because I really enjoy Miyazaki movies#and I haven’t seen so many of them#(like tonight I’m going to wind rises and I haven’t seen it before)#Barbie which was marketed so well and looked so fun#and Indiana Jones because we were bored and there was a showing in twenty minutes and you know I love archeology professors#I just feel like at this point failure to market well is a big reason cinema is dying

Oh there was a trailer for a gritty crime romance turned modern-western revenge murder thriller except its lesbians starring Kristen Stewart at the cinema and I'm completely amazed that tumblr hasn't been going batshit about it. Love Lies Bleeding.
#i guess it only premiered like 2 weeks ago and isnt out yet?#its out in the us this week and the uk in.... like a dozen months honestly its a lil fucked theyre showing trailers so soon#the arbitrary differences in film release schedules across markets is so fucked#sometimes shit is like 6 months late in the uk#sometimes we get stuff a few weeks earlier#sometimes something just... doesnt come out in the uk or us or wherever#like the green knight uk release kept getting pushed back and then iirc it went straight to streaming#despite having been previewed for months by cinemas

On this date in 2001, at the 73rd Academy Awards, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) was named Best Foreign Film.
The four main actors all spoke Mandarin, but with different accents. Chow Yun-Fat had a Cantonese accent, Michelle Yeoh had a Malaysian/English accent, Ziyi Zhang had a Beijing accent, and Chang Chen had a Taiwanese accent. Because of the difficulty some Chinese-speaking markets had with the voices, some markets actually had a dubbed version (into standard Mandarin) of the soundtrack. According to Yun-Fat, he had to do twenty-eight takes of his first scene on the first day of shooting, because he had such difficulty speaking Mandarin. When asked in an interview with Time Magazine how he felt about his Mandarin pronunciation, he replied, "It's awful."
As Yeoh did not speak Mandarin, the script was presented to her phonetically with help from Mandarin-speaking crew members. In fact, her Malaysian accent can be heard throughout.
While Zhang's character is obviously highly trained and skillful in martial arts, the actress herself never had any official martial arts training at all. Instead, she used her dance techniques to learn her moves in these scenes as if they were a dance rather than a fight (which, in terms of creating and filming them, is actually not that far from the truth).
Taiwanese-born Hong Kong actress Shu Qi was originally cast in Zhang's role of Jiaolong Yu and worked on the film for several weeks, until her agent pulled her from the movie to do a Pepsi commercial in Japan. She has since changed agents. The first draft of the screenplay said, "You will note in the script that none of the fight scenes are described, and I will just inform you now that they will be the greatest fight scenes ever in the history of cinema, period." (IMDb)
