Hi!! So I have a question about a disney animatronic!
So I was rewatching defuntlands video about cinderella castle mystery tour with my mom and I wondered.. What happened to the horned king animatronic?
It'd be a shame if he was just abandoned, it was pretty bad ass. As resident number one horned king fan, it hands down has to be one of my favorite animatronics ever made for the parks.
With many Disney rides and attractions, it's hard to know what exactly has happened to the animatronics and other elements once the attraction has closed its doors for good. A great example of that is the recent retheming of Splash Mountain into Tiana's Bayou Adventure. No one truly knows what became of the cast of characters from Splash Mountain. We can only hope and pray that they (at the very least the ones that were former residents of America Sings) were saved in the Archives... and, well, I guess we'll have to hope the same for the Horned King.
youtube
Things get complicated with Tokyo Disneyland because they aren't just owned by Disney, but also by the Oriental Land Company. I don't know exactly how things work when an attraction closes in that park. However, we do have evidence that at least some of the relics are put in the archives, that evidence being the Mickey Mouse Revue animatronics that we've seen resurface. Mickey is known to be in the Archives, has been on display at times, and Donald, Panchito, and José were retrieved from the Archives in 2015 to be featured in the finale of Gran Fiesta Tour.
So TL;DR, I would say that there's a fair chance he might be in the Archives, but I have no idea if that's truly the case or not.

ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter: Magic Kingdom (1994-2003)
Propaganda:
"Scared the everloving —- out of me as a kid, but I absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was incredible. Still mad it was basically put in the wrong park and would never survive there."
"I FUCKING love this attraction okay- Not only was it a pioneer in technology but it also was such a bold move for disney and really went to show that they could terrify people if they really wanted to. Also, the alien animatronic is cool, And there's a tim curry robot."
"personally designed by George Lucas"
"Please please please please please please please please please please please please"
"A big part of why this was shut down is the exact same reason as to what makes it great, and one of the most unique attractions of any disney park- The more mature theming, shown off with X-S Tech's blatant greed, hubris and downright maliciousness, and the overstimulating *horror* seen in the main teleportation chamber? I don't think we'll ever find in a newer ride again. Not to mention, the "deco tech" visual style found throughout is one of the coolest aesthetic blends I've ever seen!! And if all of that doesn't get you... Skippy will. Cutest animatronic this side of the galaxy, with a wonderful voice to boot. He's even got not one, not three, but Five different plush variants you could take home!! big, small, smaller, backpack or fanny pack- it's your choice :] "

Yes!! Ive heard about it. I was actually living in Japan during its run and visited Tokyo Disney. From what I’ve read though it seemed like a pretty scary attraction and I was young at the time so im sure I didn’t take part. Wish I would’ve though even if I wouldn’t remember just to say I stood in its presence

Okay I was watching some offhand Disney videos and I’m popping in to say that I think Disney should build a great movie ride-style dark ride just about Disney villains. And it should be very atmospheric and have good animatronics. It should be like villains grove but have actual little dudes in it.
Like Headless Horseman, Chernabog, Horned King, dragon Maleficent, Ernesto de la Cruz, like genuinely scary stuff.
And I say this because allegedly Universal will have a Universal Monsters land and dark ride and that sounds so damn cool and I am legit upset that my favorite theme parks (at least here in the states) refuse to do anything scary. We lost alien encounter. We lost the alien part of great movie ride. We lost the tower of terror on the west coast. We lost Snow White’s Scary Adventures. And the haunted mansion and pirates were neutered before they were even built.
Honestly the scariest part of anything at Disneyland/DCA is the laughing place scene in splash (and thank goodness we’re losing that, too)
There are adults (and even some kids and teens!) who want to be scared and enjoy it. It can still be “family friendly” without being neutered. Look at how much more hardcore Phantom Manor is in Paris! Recall the (sadly now lost) Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour in Tokyo! And doesn’t Hong Kong do actual haunt-style mazes with scare actors at Halloween? Why do the US parks get the shaft (jk I know why)
They could easily implement a strict height requirement to keep little kids from riding and obviously use their best judgement for adults who are shorter. But I want some spooky stuff in Disney because it’s there! When Disney was losing the most money and feeling lost before the Renaissance is when they made some of their craziest shit! Return to Oz! Black Cauldron! Something Wicked! The Watcher! Alien Encounter! GMR! Tower of Terror! Like come onnnnn why wouldn’t you do something that might help lure away HHN fans??

I do not need a Japanese medal commemorating an attraction I never saw at a park I’ve never visited just because I have a weakness for medallions...

I love how the Horned King's speech in Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour basically boils down to "Hello, naughty children, it's sacrifice time"

Great Movie Ride: Hollywood Studios/MGM Studios (1989-2017)
Propaganda:
"This ride was SO fun! It was such a great dark ride; all the sets were so detailed and evocative of their movies, especially Alien. When that xenomorph came down, I was always startled, even as an adult, and it flat-out scared me as a kid. Spooky! And the little plot the ride had with the ride being hijacked by a gangster or a western outlaw who then fell victim to their own greed was absolutely delightful. It was such a great show of sets and animatronics, and I miss it so much."
"I genuinely loved this attraction as a weird autistic kid who couldn't really do anything else in Hollywood Studios and I'm really sad to learn that it's gone. I loved the atmosphere and the slow-moving ride vehicles and from what I understand it took a lot of skill to be a host on that ride."
"The animatronics were great for their times. I loved the two different versions of the ride (gangster/Wild West). The cast members were so much fun during the ride. A great tribute to great movies. The rotating props in the line queue was neat too."
"The best 22 minutes in AC on a hot Floridian day that will forever be missed."
"IT WAS SO IMMERSIVE!!! And the guides were apart of the ride and there were 2 different path at one point, the Western or Gangster, and hiding in the animatronics would be a real person and they would take over the ride from the host, then in a later scene in Indiana Jones part, the host would trick them into a "curse" and take the ride back! (just watch the video xD)THEN you went through freaking Oz! There was no ride like it before or after and I will never get over them getting rid of it!"

Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour was a walk-through attraction at Tokyo Disneyland that ran from July 11, 1986 to April 5, 2006. Centered around the Disney Villains, it is notable for being one of the few uses of The Black Cauldron in the Disney theme parks, with an encounter with the Horned King serving as the attraction's finale.
