When I started watching Stay Still I had my doubts because episode 0 was quite confusing. But as I kept watching this tiny little beautiful show I was mesmerized by its beauty, the atmosphere, the love, and the characters. As the show ended today, I felt sad that it's over, but happy with how things turned out
We learn about Hayden and Damien and Kelvin and Archie from a story narrated by this woman. She's getting married the next day, but clearly it's not something that would make her happy because he's not the one she's marrying but here she is with him the night before her big day. As they talk and smoke we slowly see how their dynamic changes as the story progresses. I really thought she would leave and he didn't seem like the type to hold on to someone. But things turned out otherwise. The lighting for their scenes was always warm and comforting even if the atmosphere seemed dense and sorrowful in a way. But we see how the light breaks through that invisible barrier to bring them together and to the realisation that they belong together.
Hayden and Damien met in the most unusual way but there was nothing unusual about the way their relationship develops. They both clearly have feelings for each other even though they were at different points in their life - Hayden moving on from his ex, Damien dealing with his grandmother's death. Through the rough patches they were there for each other, even though the gestures were small (Damien taking care of drunk Hayden and keeping him company on his birthday; Hayden buying food and leaving notes for Damien to help him deal with his loss). These are very real situations and experiences and the actors did a fabulous job showing that to us.
Now Kelvin and Archie faced such an unfortunate tragedy as high school lovers torn apart by this woman's jealousy. She outed them to the whole school (or class, I'm not sure which) forcing Archie to leave the school because he became the root of all jokes and verbal (maybe physical, not sure) bullying. Does she get what she wants? In a sense, yes. We see that they are married and they have a son. Are they happy? Well, that's a whole other situation. After Archie returns we see that Kelvin really lights up and becomes a whole different person. But of course that doesn't last long, because the ever meddling witch has come to threaten Kelvin with their son. So Kelvin does what is expected of him, he pushes Archie away. Only after losing him the second time does he finally realise what he really wanted.
Finding love in this ever broken world is hard. And we see how these stories depict the reality of these experiences we go through every day.
What a beautiful and touching show. I look forward to more from Jupiter Entertainment. This show is their inaugural production under the "Love Spread" program. So, I have hope that there's more to come in the future.
I highly recommend this show and it's freely available on YouTube. So, why not give it a shot?

Okinawan Verbs II — Negative, Fundamental
We’ve covered the basics of the role of verbs and the Continuative Stem in the last grammar post. Today, let’s get into the fundamental stem and the negative form of verbs.
Fundamental Stem
Since we’ve looked at the Continuative Stem, it’s time to look at another major stem: The Fundamental Stem. Unfortunately, the Fundamental Stem is more difficult compared to the Continuative Stem as finding a verb’s Fundamental Stem depends on what type of verb it is.
You see, there are 9 types of verbs in Okinawan based on the final consonant sound in their Fundamental Stem state. They are the ka-column verbs (based on the fact that their final consonant sound in the Fundamental Stem state is k, aligning it with the か column of kana if you were to look at a kana chart), sa-column verbs, ta-column verbs, na-column verbs (of which there is only one, 死ぬん・しぬん・shinun・to die), ma-column verbs, na-column verbs, ma-column verbs, ra-column verbs (which we called -in verbs in the previous post, regardless of whether or not they’re in their -in or -yun ending state), ga-column verbs, da-column verbs, and ba-column verbs.
So how can you tell which column a verb falls into by looking at the dictionary form? Well, there’s only one na-column verb, so we have that down. We just said that verbs that end in -in/-yun are ra-column verbs. Ma-column verbs end in -mun. Sa-column verbs end in -sun. Ba-column verbs end in -bun.
Things get trickier outside of those columns. You see, both ka-column verbs and ta-column verbs end in -chun in the dictionary form and both da-column verbs and ga-column verbs end in -jun in the dictionary form. So how do you know which is which?
Uh, near as I can tell, you have to learn each verb by heart. Open up the Okinawan Language Dictionary (see the resources list), open up the spreadsheets, and in the 品詞 column, see what type of verb it says it is (for example, if it has a capital ‘K’ in that column, it’s probably a ka-column verb). For now, I don’t think it’s possible to tell the difference between ka- and ta-column verbs and the difference between ga- and da-column verbs on sight in the dictionary form.
So, that confusing mess out of the way, what are the fundamental stems? Our first step is to take away the -un/-in like in the Continuative Stem (exactly like the Continuative Stem, actually). And then, we do the following:
For Ka-column verbs — The ch- ending becomes k- Example: Kachun -> Kak-
For Sa-column verbs — Don’t do anything more. The sa-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem.
For Ta-column verbs - The ch- ending becomes t- Example: Machun -> Mat-
For Na-column verbs - Don’t do anything more. The na-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem. (Shin-)
For Ma-column verbs - Don’t do anything more. The ma-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem.
For Ra-column verbs - This is going to be a bit different. For ra-column verbs, don’t even turn it into the Continuative Stem but simply remove -in or -yun and replace it with -r-. Example: Kooin -> Koor-
For Ga-column verbs - The j- ending becomes g- Example: Wiijun -> Wiig-
For Da-column verbs - The j- ending becomes d- Example: Yanjun -> Yand-
For Ba-column verbs - Don’t do anything more. The ba-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem.
Plain Negative Terminal
Moving on, our first conjugation with the Fundamental Stem is the plain negative terminal form of the verb. To make the verb negative, simply put the dictionary form of the word into the fundamental stem and add -an.
書かん・かかん・Kakan - Not write
買ーらん・こーらん・Kooran - Not buy
Simple!
Plain Negative Attributive
Now, to make that attributive, we need to take the fundamental stem and add -aru.
書かる人・かかるっちゅ・Kakaru cchu - not-writing person
買ーらる人・こーらるっちゅ・Kooraru cchu - not-buying person
Polite Negative
Now, let’s make the negative terminal polite. In this case, we’re taking the polite form of the verb (that will either end in abiin or ibiin). As these are ra-column verb endings, their fundamental stem is abir- and ibir-. Add -an, and there you have it.
書ちゃびらん・かちゃびらん・Kachabiran - Not write
買ーいびらん・こーいびらん・Kooibiran - Not buy
買ーやびらん・こーやびらん・Kooyabiran - Not buy
Polite Negative Attributive
And finally, to make that attributive, add -aru to abir- or ibir-.
書ちゃびらる人・かちゃびらるっちゅ・Kachabiraru cchu - not-writing person
買ーいびらる人・こーいびらるっちゅ・Kooibiraru cchu - not-buying person
買ーやびらる人・こーやびらるっちゅ・Kooyabiraru cchu - not-buying person
In review:
There are 9 types of verbs in Okinawan (ka, sa, ta, na, ma, ra, ga, da, ba)
A dictionary is required to learn if a verb ending in -chun is a ka or a ta verb and if a verb ending in -jun is a ga or a da verb.
The Fundamental Stem makes various phonetic changes from the Continuative Stem.
The Plain Negative Terminal: Fundamental Stem + an
The Plain Negative Attributive: Fundamental Stem + aru
The Polite Negative Terminal: Continuative Stem + abiran (or ibiran for -in ra column verbs)
The Polite Negative Attributive: Continuative Stem + abiraru (or ibiraru for -in ra column verbs)

Urgent Action: 12 Hongkongers Formally Arrested in China
Twelve Hongkongers arrested on 23 August 2020 by the Chinese coast guard were formally arrested on 30 September – two for allegedly organizing people to cross the border between Hong Kong and China and the other 10 for allegedly crossing the border. Having been detained for more than 45 days without access to their families and family-appointed lawyers, the 12 individuals remain at imminent risk of torture and other ill-treatment.
CHENG Tsz-ho (鄭子豪), CHEUNG Chun-fu (張俊富), LIU Tsz-man (廖子文), QUINN Moon (喬映瑜), TANG Kai-yin (鄧 棨然), LI Tsz-yin (李子賢), LI Yu-hin (李宇軒), WONG Wai-yin (黃偉然) and four other individuals were intercepted by coast guard officers from mainland China after leaving Hong Kong on a speedboat on 23 August 2020.
On 30 September 2020, Yantian District People’s Procuratorate announced that it has approved the arrest of the 12 Hongkongers. This means that the 12 individuals could remain in custodial detention for three months or more while the case is investigated further by the police. QUINN and TANG were arrested for allegedly “organizing other persons to secretly cross the border” and the ten others for “secretly crossing the border”.
The families have been urging the mainland Chinese authorities to ensure the rights of the 12 individuals, as well as calling on the Hong Kong government to provide more information.
On 20 September, some family members of the 12 detained individuals demanded the Hong Kong Police Force to provide more information about the arrest of the 12 individuals as the families believed that the Hong Kong police took part in the arrest operation. . According to the families, the Hong Kong police asked them questions about their campaigning efforts for the release of the 12 and how the families organized themselves. The police did not provide additional information and asked them to seek help at the Immigration Department.
According to an article by Hong Kong Secretary for Security John Lee and a government response to a media inquiry about the alleged violation of the rights of the 12 individuals, the Hong Kong government has made clear it has no intention of interfering with “the law enforcement of other jurisdictions”.
TAKE ACTION:
Write a letter in your own words or using the sample below as a guide to one or both government officials listed. You can also email, fax, call or Tweet them.
Click here to let us know the actions you took on Urgent Action 141.20. It’s important to report because we share the total number with the officials we are trying to persuade and the people we are trying to help.

Hong Kong’s ‘yellow economy’ rewards protester-friendly businesses
Seven months of unrest have taken a heavy toll on many Hong Kong businesses, but pro-democracy protesters are now seeking to reward shops and restaurants that support their cause by building a “yellow” economy. In contrast, “blue” pro-government and pro-China businesses are frequent targets for vandalism or boycotts. At Fu Kee Noodles in Wan Chai, diners slurp wonton under the watchful gaze of a gas mask-wearing Pepe the Frog, which has become a mascot of the pro-democracy movement. “This is a yellow shop, the boss supports the protesters, so we decided to come,” said a 47-year-old advertising employee calling himself Gilbert. “The most important thing in Hong Kong now is that we need to help each other, especially when the government does not help us.” Posters and post-it notes with pro-democracy messages cover the wall by the cashier. Owner Kwong Chun-hin, 30, told AFP he hopes the yellow-blue tagging will become a trend “because this is good for us. I mean not just my shop, I mean all shops”. Ending of Barrack O’Karma
Yuk Fai goes back in time to save Coco, so he could change the fate he has with Alex. Due to this everyone’s fate ended up changing in the future. I loved the ending. It was a happy ending overall for side characters while the main couple had a sort of ‘bittersweet’ ending. It was an open ending, so it depends on how you see it.
Side Characters Ending:
- Mrs. Ho does not end up stealing someone elses baby & family. She ends up owning and raising a dog as replacement. (They didn’t show Wong Man Chi, so I’m gonna assume she’s living happily with her husband & baby?)
- Tung Tung does not get snatched by the Crow. He ends up living happily with both of his parents. (Very happy that this arc gets the happily ever after ending)
- Raj becomes the owner of a restaurant with Ching Ching & her father being regular customers there. (Odd ending & disappointing that the only interracial couple doesn’t end up together. Also Ching Ching had a huge personality change where she’s more tomboyish. Her Dad ends up becoming a security guard?)
- Mia ends up becoming a successful idol. Ka Chun who “guarded” Mia in the previous life, is able to gather the courage to approach her in person and take a photo with her. (A bit sad that Mia never found out that Ka Chun was the one who guided her to achieve her idol dream. And even in this alternate ending, we’re still left in a limbo of “will they get together or not”)
- Kam Fung and Carmen are still a couple and proud owners of a successful bar. (I’m guessing they never broke up in this timeline, so he never ends up becoming a promiscuous playboy)
- Yuki becomes blind, so she no longer obsesses over her beauty. Luckily, Sai Hin is still by her side & is still deeply in love with her. (She has more of a darker ending, with being blind and all. But I love how even in this alternate verse, he still takes care of her)
- Ka Chun and Hei Man are together as well. They both still love playing video games. (Is he still living in the “Twilight Mansion”?)
- Lam Yuk Si ending was pretty vague. It shows him standing on top of a building with his older & younger self looking down on Alex (Some say he becomes a tycoon after taking Yuk Fai’s advice & invested in some properties. And apparently him looking down on Alex is him saying that he will always be her ‘guardian angel’ aka protecting her)
* It didn’t show an alternate ending to the first episode arc. Is that an error on the writers end? Or maybe they didn’t know how to write them in?
Main Characters Ending:
- Alex did die on the plane and what Yuk Fai saw was her ghost
- Due to Yuk Fai travelling back in time for the second time to save Coco. He ends up drowning himself. He sacrificed himself to save Coco. Which was in vain cause Coco died anyways, nonetheless different deaths caused the change in everyone’s fate. This also means in this timeline both Alex & Yuk Fai died. Coco and Ah Siu both died together in the previous life as well
- In a whole new universe that Yuk Fai created with his death. Alex a stewardess does not end up taking the plane that she would’ve disappeared in. And everyone’s lives were changed.
- Yuk Fai, no longer haunted by Coco’s ‘ghost’. Which was probably caused by guilt from his previous life from not being able to save her. He ends up succeeding in life and became a pilot
- They both end up meeting each other at Kam Fung & Carmen’s bar. They pass by each other & slowly turns back and look at each other. Then it shows flashbacks of their previous 60s and modern day lives while they smile at each other. The end.
I really do like the ending. Cause as everyone knows choices you make in life will ultimately determine your fate. Yuk Fai and Alex’s ending was perfect in my eyes. They get a do over and this time I hope it leads to a happy ending. It is open ended so it’s up to us to believe that either Alex or Yuk Fai would make the first move & start dating. And of course hopefully no one dies prematurely this time. The Twilight Mansion is what chained Alex, Yuk Fai & Lam Yuk Si to the building. Other characters went through weird circumstances due to living in the building. So in this timeline since no one (well almost everyone) no longer lives there, they all end up living normal lives. A fitting ending.
