Guardian Bingo Bonus Round?
Hello wonderful people who supported Guardian Bingo!
It is I, mod @tehfanglyfish, here to gauge interest in a bonus round of Guardian Bingo spanning parts of June, July, and possibly August.
This would be different from the regular bingo that ran in 2022 and 2023 in that there will be no cards and no badges. Instead, the goal is to offer low-stress inspiration and have fun.
Here's a rough outline of how bonus bingo would work:
A new prompt every 1 or 2 weeks for a total of five prompts (each corresponding with a letter in bingo)
Fills would need to be posted within that 1-2 week period
No minimum word counts (or the equivalent for non-fic creations)
Any type of creation is accepted (fic, art, meta, gif sets, edits, vids, crafts/fanartifacts, rec lists, mood boards, etc.)
Amnesty week at the end for any missed fills
Bingos are earned by filling all five prompts
Again, no new badges, but you will earn a sense of accomplishment, personal glory, and a shoutout post with everyone who managed a bingo
So, now knowing all of that, please let me know if you're interested.

Chapter summary: Lin Jing couldn’t really say that the idea of doing something with his coworkers other than being in a dangerous situation wasn’t appealing. His boss had been avoiding going out with them for quite some time now, and even if it was just picking out clothes for a mission, it might be a good distraction for the man. It wasn’t like his loneliness went unnoticed. Sometimes he dared to ask, and often the first response would be a scolding, but then Zhao Yunlan would end up sitting next to him, lighting a cigarette, letting out a few words of what had been suffocating him, and quickly ending the matter - but at least he used to do that. Not now. Now Lin Jing had stopped asking after only getting scolded in return, and Zhao Yunlan had stopped sitting with him for a moment, which made him think that perhaps it was a more serious and much more intimate matter. It was none of his business, but that didn’t mean he didn’t care.
@tazzy-ace and I bring chapter 2 of this new rarepair hell. \o

Shen Wei... Shen Wei... ... Kill me! Kill me!
10,000 years could pass and I will still have not recovered from this scene. I mean, he's saying I don't want to live in a world where he isn't... I want to go wherever he's gone to, so kill me.
This only works in fiction, for me, but, damn if it doesn't work.
Forty episodes of Guardian complete. It continued to be engaging until the very end, which is not an easy feat. That said, I am not sure I understand the ending. I get it, but I think they left some important things on the cutting room floor.
I never did get around to liking Guo Changcheng. But can I say that the scene with him having tea with the women doesn't make sense and it feels like the adaptation team felt the need to include a specific scene from the novel but they needed to pass censorship and that's what they came up with. I could be very wrong as I haven't read the novel, but Chu Shuzhi waiting impatiently to drag his friend/teammate away from a matchmaking scene doesn't make nearly as much sense as him waiting to drag his boyfriend away from the scene. And even before that, why was he there in the first place? No matter their relationship, why is he just (not) chillin' in the background?
Zhu Hong annoyed me for a bit wondering why Zhao Yunlan didn't return her feelings. And this is possibly a cultural divide, but as far as I could see, she never explicitly made her feelings known--until the dream. And even knowing how perceptive her chief was, I think it's unfair to leave it to the other person to interpret your actions to your liking. If you want someone to pick up what you're putting down, you're better off just handing it to them. That aside, I liked her. Other than what I see as a lack of communication, I never questioned her actions; everything she did as a character made sense for her, even when she when she was lamenting about Zhao Yunlan, though not quite fair, it made sense from her perspective. Moreover, her future path is the only one I understand.
I don't have a precise understanding of what anyone else on the team is doing with their life post-split. And if it was trying to be one of those "leave it to the audience to decide" endings, it failed spectacularly by being simultaneously too vague and too specific.
Shen Wei and Ye Zun... I have complicated feelings about what I don't know. Family bonds are weird, so I can't say that their fate doesn't make sense, but I also don't think whatever it is is gonna be healthy.
Lin Jing and Da Qing in Zhao Yunlan's apartment?
Guo Changcheng being the only remaining team member walking through HQ and that mini-me Chu Shuzhi?
But the one I'm most confused about is... the real Chief Zhao?
I feel like I might rupture my cerebral cortex if I don't stop there. I want to scream, but I'm also pretty certain that if I just wait for the novel, my questions will be answered. But is it fair to ask a viewer to fill in the blanks from the original work? Be it a loose or faithful adaptation, it should be able to stand on it's own. And for the most part it did; however, it failed to at the most crucial moments.
That said, on the whole I enjoyed the story and while I won't watch it again, I am looking forward to reading the novel(s). I could take or leave most of the performances, but Zhu Yilong, Bai Yu, and Jiang Mingyang really did it for me.
Finally, I have to say something that is really unbelievable coming from me because I usually do not comprehend people's faces as being attractive or otherwise, and the times when I do acknowledge it, it's usually fleeting; however Zhu Yilong is unbelievably beautiful. I cannot stop thinking about his face and his subtle and brief expressions. I just don't understand what's happening with the symmetry and general arrangement of his features, but I am honestly and utterly captivated. This might be a problem.

@tazzy-ace not that you will remember names but jsksjsksjs. @meluci-fer @sagittariusdarkarrow good. And I'm sure @victorian-pirate already knows this 😑
What characters call each other (and themselves) in Guardian
This post is made because I don’t want to wall of text on that Chinese names post.
As a translator, I like to normalise the usage of pinyin honorifics and titles the way Japanese honorifics and titles are normalised in anime/manga. If you’re familiar with anime/manga, I’m sure this list is familiar to you: -san -sama -kun -kaasan -niisan -neesan -sensei -senpai -chan -bucho -shacho. I see no reason at all why we can’t do the same with Chinese honorifics except for the easily translated occupational ones.
Now, the next bit is off the top of my head, and I’ve only read the book 1.5 times (i’m currently 48 chapters into a re-read) so feel free to correct please.
There are three major characters in Zhenhun that uses ‘special’ personal pronouns on top of the usual 'I’: Daqing, Lin Jing, and Zhao Yunlan. (I’m also attaching a list of how each character is referred to by the others, and it’s gotten long, hence the cut.)

Guardian really set my expectations of "censored bl cdramas" and man that was a high bar and probably not fair of me to expect.
Guardian really opens with Zhao Yunlan asking Shen Wei "are you married? You're such a catch. Can I take you out to eat? Here's my number A-Lan call me" which like even on face value id say thats called flirting (unless I guess ur so straight Straight blinders on that 2 men have to physically fuck in front of u to consider something gay)
Then of course there's shen weis pining shit but like, that's not Hammer down obvious to I guess the most oblivious person in denial
But Zhu Hong saying she likes Zhao Yunlan, Zhao Yunlan repeatedly refusing her and feeling bad about it, Zhu Hong repeatedly acknowledging he picked SHEN WEI over her (making it fairly clear it was a romantic pick and she Lost it to a guy) and shen Wei, brick that he can be at times, tells her it will only take a few years for the feelings to fade when she'll get over Zhao yunlan. The guy in love with him, instead of her. Yeah shen wei, she's definitely not wishing she could stab you for that insensitive remark. But she's too good of a person to.
Which. I'd say the above two points establish fairly overtly that: Zhao Yunlan is into men, that his colleagues assume he's also into women (if Zhu Hong thinks she has a chance), and that Shen Wei is Zhao Yunlans romantic pick. So Shen Weis sexuality? Well he doesn't dispute being Zhao Yunlans romantic pick, and Lin Jing assumes they're lovers with dialogue (yes he's saying opposite day stuff but his opposite day is just not being a liar and spy). So Shen Weis sexuality includes Zhao Yunlan.
And so like that's just. Fairly overt explicit stuff about their relationship. There's also the "a very oblivious person could argue its only implied" flirting. (And everything going on with Lao Chu and Xiao Guo, the side couple... oh my heart ;-; when they almost froze... the family dinner at Xiao guos... Lao chu admiring how kind Xiao Guo is, scaring him trying to say he's a cannibal and Xiao Guo not running away)
There's the coat sharing macho trying to be the man helping the damsel both of those fuckers do galore, shen wei moving in across the hall (which is either stalker or deeply in love or - as is true, both), shen wei implicitly moving in (this one's vague ill admit to be fair), the fucking "You're good with your hands" line from Zhao yunlan which is absolutely a porn line, every villain in the show viscerally aware Zhao Yunlan is who Shen Wei wants to protect, Ye Zun pretending to be Shen Wei by calling Zhao Yunlan cute names and asking if his outfit looks nice (and all of That), Zhao yunlans romantic ass hit me through the heart line of "if you're trouble I want a lifetime of you" at the wedding (not ever over it), the fucking lollipop scene in ye old haixing. Just a bunch of flirty type scenes, romantic tropes galore. And that's not even covering the actual genuine subtext of ALL the cases paralleling how shen wei and/or how Zhao yunlan feel implicitly (which are just subtext to be fair... how shen wei thinks he lost kunlun, how Zhao yunlan ISNT him so it hurts he's a stranger or he IS in which case he's a liar and shen weis grieving, the case where a dixingren and human love each other and Zhao yunlan notices he wants to be close to shen wei even though shen weis lying etc).
Like. They felt as canon as Tara X Willow in Buffy. Or at least as much as Xena x Gabrielle, the center relationship of the show where all stories of the episodes are always at least in some way about them.
#guardian#weilan#meta#rant#to be fair: word of honor cdrama did JUST as much as guardian on feeling basically canonically explicitly gay#as long as u can interpret overt flirting with men and them being soulmates as love.#cause yeah there are no kisses. but still like... yeah theyre in love.#and like.. man zhu hongs love triangle plot is Central in making the Guardian romance as overt as it is#obviously irs easy to put in: its a girl love interest for zhao yunlan#but its also a love interest he Rejects for shen wei. so like. cdrama land says he cant say i love you to a man?#but he can say he doesnt love a girl and hes picked the man instead. im just saying it works well to make that overtly clear#dont even get me started on chuguo ;-; i love them so much and acting defijitely helped intensify it

10 Characters That Make Me Feel Things
tagged by @imlivingformyselfdontmindme
Since I am tagged by a cdrama buddy, I am gonna limit it to cdramas.
Wolfie/Chu Youwen, The Wolf (2020). I enjoy drama characters often, but I never lust over them. Meet close to the sole exception. Anyone who was following me when this drama aired, remembers the insanity. I finally understood what groupies are on about.
Xiao Qi, The Rebel Princess (2021) - the ur drama general, as far as I am concerned.
Awu, The Rebel Princess (2021) - I would fight through insurmountable odds to get to her also.
Jiang Xiao Yuan, Derailment (2023) - I am with @imlivingformyselfdontmindme she is everything and I am totally a JXY defender!
Xiao Yao, Lost You Forever Part 1 (2023) - my FL of the year. She would be terrible as a partner and insurmountable amount of work but I can totally get why all these people chase her, I would too.
Tushan Jing, LYF 1 (2023) - I want to make him sandwiches, give him a number of a great therapist and a genetics counselor and also some paper so he can scheme to help his girl's cousin take over the world as some sort of valentine's day present.
Ji Ye, Novoland Eagle Flag (2019) - murder more people in the streets, I love you pls!
Fan Xian, Joy of Life (2019) - mmmm
Yi Xiao Chuan, The Myth (2019) - let me weep in peace. The power of overwhelming will and brain and decency. Being not enough to save a damn thing.
Eighth Prince, Gong (2011) - the terrifying start of my finding queues sexy!
Xiao Yi Qing, Listening Snow Tower (2019) and Su Mengzhen, Heroes (2022) - nobody's ever coughed this beautifully while slaughtering as these two.
Yu Sifeng, Love and Redemption (2020) - duh
Ren Ruyi and Ning Yuanzhou, A Journey to Love (2023) - of course.
Shen Minglan and Gu Tingye, The Story of Minglan (2018) - my n1 drama and my n1 couple.
Ning Que, Ever Night 1 (2019) - young killer with infinite softness for one tiny world-destroying servant. I loved this character.
Ning Yi, The Rise of Phoenixes (2018) and Ye Hua, Three Lives (2017) - long hair obsessions.
Tantai Jin, Till the End of the Moon (2023) - I've already talked war and peace amounts about this man.
Yuan Hong in any drama.
This is way more than 10 so gonna stop.

He closes his eyes deliberately, then opens them again. This time slow. Careful. Sways up onto his hands and knees, and looks up. On all sides of him everything resolves into soft, dark night. He’s in Haixing, back in the mountains—but not with Shen Wei. He looks down to see the greaves covering both his arms, leather wrapped tightly, bound around his wrists, his hair hanging down, and wants to scream. He’s alone. “Not this again,” he whispers, voice thready, and looks back up at the night sky, thick with stars.

Chapter Summary: While Zhao Yunlan was trying to distract himself from his distraction, Zhu Hong had already hooked Chu Shuzhi's arm and started walking towards the entrance. Behind them, the building with its fading lights contrasted with the black flow of Zhu Hong's long dress as she walked, and the further they went and the mist blurred their silhouettes, the more the image resembled a painting of decadent times in motion. "You two are very charming and don't look threatening enough to protect a lady from harassment. Lao Chu with that look that the night will end in death is a much better companion to keep me safe." Lin Jing locked the car, not at all surprised that he had been abandoned by the woman after all the bags he had carried. “Their support is conditional on bonuses and manual labor… Can we go, Zhao-chu?” “Yeah, of course.” Looking back, Zhao Yunlan would say what happened next was because despite his usual appearance, his mother had raised a polite man. Simply that and maybe that he was just joking if his brain caught up enough to come up with an excuse.
