Favorite thing that you can see up in the sky?: Stars. Would you like it if they sold disposable undies in a pop up box?: Uh, no.

French fries. Yay or Nay?: Yay. Which of your friends has the most annoying sibling?: I don’t have any friends. Wood floors or carpet?: My house has tile and carpet. I love wooden floors, though. Would you rather eat at the table or in your room?: We don’t have a dining room table. I like to eat in my room. A teacher says she’s noticed you’ve looked sad, do you confide in her?: Something like that actually happened. My grandma passed away my sophomore year in high school and I took it really hard. It was apparently obvious to one of my teachers who brought up her concerns in these meetings I had every year called an IEP meeting. Friend asks you to hide drugs, booze etc for them, do you do it?: I wouldn’t want to be involved with anything like that. Would you rather have a gooey cinnamon bun or awesome cheesy pizza?: Why not both? Do you like the sound of birds singing when you wake up, or is it annoying?: It’s annoying, ha. You fill your best friend’s Xmas stocking, what do you put in it?: I got a few things for my family’s stockings. You fill your worst enemy’s stocking, what do you put in it?: I don’t have any enemies, but if I did I wouldn’t be giving them any gifts. You fill your OWN stocking, what do you put in it?: Uhhh. I don’t know. If someone gave you a kitten, would you keep it?: No, not at this time. What’s your ideal activity for a rainy day?: I don’t do anything different. I love rainy days, though. Favorite type of cracker: Ritz, Cheez-Its, and Nips. Banana sandwich..yum or yuck?: Banana and peanut butter sandwiches are delicious. Animal you like to watch but sort of creeps you out: Documentaries on wild animals are fascinating, but they’re scary animals. I like watching them on TV from the safety of my home. Have you entered the Lays create a flavor contest?: Nope. Bagels or English Muffins?: Both are good. Do you like or hate to buy new shoes?: I like getting new shoes. Do you keep your phone on you at all times or forget it a lot: It’s always nearby. Who is a family member you look forward to seeing on a holiday?: My extended family doesn’t get together anymore. :( Everyone is busy doing their own things now as the years go by and everyone gets older. Are Easter baskets only for kids?: No. They’re just gift baskets, there’s no age limit on that. Do you do anything to recognize St Patrick’s Day?: The only thing we do that day is have corned beef and cabbage for dinner, ha. Is there a turntable and vinyl records in your house?: No. Does your family have an SUV or pick up truck?: We do have a pickup truck. No one drives it anymore, but it’s useful for times like this time of year when we go pickup a Christmas tree. Do you enjoy doing things outdoors?: The only outdoorsy activity I enjoy is spending time at the beach. Which of your parents do you laugh more with?: My mom. Have you ever been to an open casket wake or funeral?: Yes. Would you like to get married one day?: I don’t see it happening. Who mows the lawn at your house?: My dad. I don’t go out much and when I do I avoid certain places where I think I might run into someone. “I don’t want the world to see me cause I don’t think that they’d understand...” How do you like your eggs?: Just about every way. I most often eat them scrambled, though. After a date, do you call your friend to tell them how it went?: What’s a date? ha. Favorite Mexican food?: Burritos. Upcoming event you are dreading?: Nothing at the moment. Best Happy Meal toy you ever got: I liked a lot of the ones from my childhood. Do you make lists?: Yeah. Do you make pro/con lists before making a decision?: Sometimes. Do you have a favorite pen? What kind?: I like black ink fine tip pens. What’s the best meal you cook?: Ramen, ha. That’s the only thing I cook. Do you do more surveys during the day or night?: I generally do them late at night. On lunch break, do you eat or do other things?: I don’t have a lunch break (not in school, don’t have a job), but whenever I eat I often put on a YouTube video. Smoothies? Bubble tea? Fancy coffee? None of the above?: Coffeeeee. Do you like romantic gestures or do they make you feel awkward?: Haven’t experienced that in a long time. 2017 Feel-Good Drarry Fic

A few days ago I posted a rec list of 2017 Drarry fic that tackled Important Issues. But not every fic has to be important or political, and I wanted to also put together a list of some fics that have made us smile, laugh, cackle, awwww, and generally feel good about life. Thank you to everyone who puts a smile on the collective face of the fandom. Again, this is not a “best-of” or “favorites” list, and it is unavoidably subjective (and thank you to everyone who contributed ideas to the list!), but I hope you get some joy from these fics. Humor, fluff, crack, and smiles ahead (in no particular order)!

Pretty Fond of Not Very Good Ideas by @lqtraintracks: Harry Peterson, Orderer Extraordinaire, and his trusty sidekick, Ray. Or: Harry's been hit with a memory charm, but it's okay because he realises he's bent for Draco Malfoy.

It looked a lot bigger in the picture by @ravenclawsquill: Draco is determined to experience the full novelty of an authentic Muggle holiday. Harry doesn't quite understand, but when does he ever understand Draco? (Or, the time Harry and Draco accidentally went dogging in a car the size of a matchbox.)

I Can’t Take It! by @xx-thedarklord-xx: After the war, Draco Malfoy became an author. A best selling author whose books move the hearts of those who read them. Which wouldn't be a problem for Ron if all of them weren't about Harry! It was obvious to him that Malfoy was in love with his best friend but why was it that no one else seemed to think so? He was going to get to the bottom of this and get Harry to stop mooning over the blonde idiot at the same time. Perhaps, they just needed someone to come along and get them to fess up. For the safety of his own sanity, Ron was going to help Malfoy ensnare Harry. That is, if they can get along long enough not to kill each other.

It’s Our Party and We’ll Fuck If We Want To by @firethesound: It's like if a tree falls in the forest, Harry thinks. Sneaking away to blow his boyfriend in a coat closet at their own housewarming is only a bad idea if they get caught, right?

A Hyperactive Fruit, a Nasty Neighbour and a Love Story by @synonym-for-life: Potter’s pet Niffler is wreaking havoc in Godric’s Hollow and Draco, the Assistant Head to the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, is the one that has to deal with it. Repeatedly. The fact that Potter keeps coming to Draco’s office in grey jogging bottoms - repeatedly - does in no way help the matter.

A Guide to Pet Safety During the Holiday Season

When you think about it, the holiday season is an unusually dangerous time. Christmas and the subsequent year-end festivities typically involve large quantities of humans gathering together. And wherever large human gatherings go, disaster statistically usually follows. Even during this very strange Christmas season, in which families will (hopefully) forego mass gathering due to the coronavirus pandemic, plenty of dangers linger. What are chestnuts roasting on an open fire, if not massive fire hazards?

As the human animal has demonstrated time and time again, there’s probably not much we can do to mitigate the dangers of the winter holidays. Brittle, flammable Christmas trees must be lit, and blister packaging must be torn open with a giant knife (NOTE: Please do not do this anymore). But hopefully we can at least all agree to do our best to protect the other, non-human animals we like to call our friends.

For as dangerous as the holiday season is for people, it can be just as dangerous for our beloved pets. The holiday landscape is positively littered with items and decorations that could prove toxic to dogs, cats, birds, and more. Not only that but more animals land in the ER around the holidays due to burns from candles than in any other season.

Drs. Vernard Hodges and Terrence Ferguson are the veterinary duo behind the Critter Fixer Veterinary Hospital in rural Georgia and the stars of Nat Geo WILD’s documentary series Critter Fixers: Country Vets. They know better than most the dangers that the holiday season can pose to our furry, scaly, and/or feathered friends.

“During the holidays, we’re only really closed on Christmas Day,” Dr. Ferguson says. “We’re open the rest of the time.”

“I am sure I’ve spent at least five and maybe six Christmas mornings up. Accidents and emergencies happen,” Dr. Hodges adds.

Den of Geek spoke with Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson (who also penned this year’s childrens’ book C is for Critter Fixer) about what it takes to keep pets safe during the holiday season.

Dangerous Decorations

Perhaps the most consistent and pervasive element of the holiday season, decoration is also the most dangerous to pets. While human beings know (for the most part) that tinsel, streamers, and mistletoe aren’t there to be munched on, animals don’t have the same savvy.

Of all the possible decorations during Christmas, Hanukkah, the New Year, and other observed winter holidays, Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Hodges point to plants as the most problematic.

“One of the most popular plants is poinsettias and they are highly, highly, highly dangerous to dogs and cats,” Dr. Ferguson says. “You definitely want to keep them out of reach so they can’t get at them. They can be very toxic. They can cause death.”

Lilies, another common holiday mainstay, can be toxic to dogs as cats as well. But the doctors also point out that toxicity isn’t the only hazard presented by plants and other decorations. Anything consumed that was not meant to be consumed can prove to be dangerous to animals whether toxic or not.

“We get a lot of animals in here that are vomiting or can’t hold food down. They have blockages,” Dr. Ferguson says. “A lot of these cats are very curious. The mistletoe, the tinsel, and things like that, they like to play with them and then they’ll ingest them.”

Oh, Christmas Tree

Of course, the ultimate decoration during any Christmas festivity is the mighty Christmas tree. Christmas trees pose many potential hazards to pets due to their height, ornamentation, and lighting. As one might expect, the ornaments in particular can prove irresistible to felines.

“The cats will try to get up and bat the balls and everything. They aren’t normally afraid of them, so you want to be really careful with the cat actually tipping over the tree. If you have certain things on it you can probably cause a fire, so you want to be careful with that,” Dr. Hodges says.

“Even with your lighting, some cats are ‘pawers,’ some cats are biters, so you don’t want your cat to be electrocuted either,” Dr. Ferguson adds.

Burns are indeed a real concern during the holiday season, and the dangers aren’t just posed by the lighting on Christmas trees.

“When potpourri was big, we used to see a lot more cats getting burned and I guess things are now not quite as bad. They smell those candles and potpourri and they instantly want to play with the wax and stuff,” Dr. Hodges says.

Watch What You (And They) Eat

While this is bound to be a safer holiday season for humans (and hopefully animals) than usual due to fewer people at family celebrations, one area of concern that won’t change much is in food preparation. Just about everyone knows that chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats, and other pets, but Drs. Hodges and Ferguson point out that there are many other foods cooked during the holidays that could be harmful to animals.

“You want to be really careful with some stuff while you’re cooking. If an onion falls on the floor, get those onions. Onions are quite toxic,” Dr. Hodges says. “Also grapes; people prepare salads and fruit salads and different things. When you’re preparing and that grape falls on the floor, don’t think, Okay, just let the dog eat it,’ because that actually destroys the kidneys. You get some nephrotoxicity from grapes. Garlic as well.”

Even holiday food that is not necessarily toxic in the moment for dogs and cats can cause issues down the road. Dr. Hodges identifies the common practice of throwing fat from meat on the floor for dogs as a common cause of pancreatitis for the animals.

“Animal-specific food only,” Dr. Ferguson says of his holiday food guide for pets. “Dog food for the dogs and cat food for the cats. Nothing from the table.”

Specific Risks for Dogs, Cats, Birds, and More

Perhaps you’ve noticed thus far that cats and dogs are the pets that make up the majority of the risk during the holiday season. Part of this is because they are the two most common house pets in the U.S. by far. But it also cannot be denied that they are just uniquely chaotic creatures. Which of the two represent the most danger to themselves and others during Christmastime? According to Drs. Hodges and Ferguson, it’s the doggos.

“I’ve got to give it to dogs,” Dr. Hodges says. “Cats, they stalk and do different things, but dogs are, by nature, notoriously kind of clumsy. If anything hits the floor, they’ll eat it. I can’t remember the number of times I’ve had dogs come in. A vet is just trying to figure out ‘what the heck is going on? What has this dog done?’”

Dr. Hodges recalls a time that an owner believed that their dog got its paws on golden chocolate coins (gelt) from Hanukkah celebrations.

“Sure enough, I took an X-ray and this dog ate them whole. I think I cut out maybe 40 of these things – just whole coins from a whole bag. Dogs, I think, will find a way.”

Though dogs and cats make up the majority of holiday mischief, the vets’ advice to owners of less popular pets like birds, lizards, and hamsters is similar

“It’s pretty much the same thing,” Dr. Ferguson says. “If they can’t be watched or are not observed, then they need to be in their confinement so that they can’t get into these different things.”

“With birds, you have to be really careful with Teflon because Teflon is very toxic,” Dr. Hodges adds. “When you’re searing that butter and then the butter burns, that will move to your bird and you’ll find it at the bottom of their cage.”

What To Do During a Christmas Day Emergency

Thus far all of the Critter Fixers’ advice has been surrounding how to avoid holiday season pet emergencies. But what if an actual pet emergency arises on Christmas Day? According to Dr. Ferguson, the best plan of attack is to consider that possibility ahead of time and have access to your personal vet’s emergency line.

“We always let owners know to make sure they have our number, but they also have the number to the local emergency hospital so that when emergencies happen, you’re not scrambling trying to find numbers and you already have them stored,” Dr. Ferguson says.

Dr. Hodges concurs: “If this is truly an emergency, then you definitely want to reach out to your veterinarian or emergency cert because some of this stuff can’t wait. A lot of times clients will call and they’ll be like, ‘I’m not sure if it is an emergency or not,’ and I normally say, ‘Look, if it was important enough for you to call, more than likely it’s an emergency, let’s get to the hospital.” We’d rather be safe than sorry.”

How Will COVID Effect Pets’ Holiday Experience?

Of course, the pet elephant in the room this holiday season is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Medical experts have rightfully recommended that people not travel or visit with family this holiday season. Given the stress of that new normal, wondering how our animals will react to a change in schedule for the holiday season is probably not high on everyone’s list of concerns. But it’s worth asking the question anyway: will our pets notice these new, unusual holiday celebrations?

According to Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Hodges, our pets have already spent much of quarantines and lockdowns adjusting to their owners’ new schedules.

“The pandemic is allowing us to be home more so when we do leave, it causes a lot of anxiety in the pets because they’ve become accustomed to you being there all the time,” Dr. Ferguson says. “It’s not like normally when you leave in the morning and come home in the evening. They become accustomed to that and now they’re accustomed to being there all day.”

“I have this exact case,” Dr. Hodges says of a patient in exam room 6. “The guy was a truck driver and he’d been home (for quarantine) and when he started leaving again, the dog was really acting out.”

The jury’s still out on how changes in holiday preparation will affect pets’ psyche but the duo explains that as long as owners are attentive to their pets’ emotional state, things should be just fine.

Despite the strangeness of this COVID holiday season, and all the risks inherent to seasonal celebrations, the Critter Fixers have some good news to go out on.

“Hopefully with the vaccinations coming out, we’ll all be able to experience a normal holiday next Christmas. In the meantime, give your pets a lot of love and enjoy that unconditional love,” Dr. Hodges says, before adding, “We’ve been asked this all throughout (the pandemic): ‘Can pets get COVID and give it to you or vice versa?’ The answer is no. We all know that your pets are COVID-free, so you’re free to hug and kiss them.”

10 Ways to Give Back to Our Local Community This Holiday Season

This year has demonstrated, perhaps more than ever, the importance of our family, friends, neighbors, and community. It truly “takes a village” to keep a community functioning effectively, whether that’s by keeping our waterways clean, feeding the hungry, teaching our kids, or supporting small businesses.

With the holidays right around the corner, December offers the perfect opportunity to give back to the place we call home. You might want to focus your efforts near home, expand to our larger community, or even help support the people closest to you. Whether you’re passionate about a particular cause or just want to get more involved in general, let these 10 ways, both big and small, inspire you to do good in your town.

GIVE BACK NEAR HOME

1. Attract local wildlife. By making your neighborhood more wildlife friendly, you’re helping to create a balanced and healthy ecosystem. Plus, many of the animals you can attract help with pest control and pollination.1

Ideas:

● Add a birdbath to your backyard or create a rain garden to attract wildlife (and filter out local pollutants).

● Place bird feeders on your property to feed birds all year long.

● Tie corncobs to tree branches to feed squirrels.

● Hang birdhouses on your property to provide shelter.

● Use native plants in your landscaping to provide food and shelter for birds, bees, butterflies, and other critters.

Take action: While you might not be able to “break ground” until spring, start researching native plants now to design a landscaping plan that provides food, shelter, and water for local wildlife.

2. Clean up our community. Besides beautifying the area, picking up trash keeps it out of our local waterways, which means a cleaner water supply for all of us.

Ideas:

● Whether you make this a solo effort or join in an organized group event, pick up trash in your neighborhood, at a local park, or elsewhere in our community.

● Depending on your community’s regulations, you can recycle many home items such as paper, glass, and aluminum.

● And don’t forget to clean the exterior of your home, where water runoff (such as on your driveway and sidewalks) can carry debris into the local sewer system.2

Take action: Check with your local municipality to learn about environmental clean-up efforts in our community, as well as recycling and composting.

3. Organize or join a neighborhood watch. According to a recent report, neighborhoods with Neighborhood Crime Watch programs experience roughly 16 percent less crime.3 Keeping an eye out for each other instills a sense of safety and security in your neighborhood by increasing surveillance, reducing opportunities, and enhancing information sharing among residents. Even if your neighborhood doesn’t have an official program, you can still share crime information via a neighborhood Facebook group or apps like NextDoor.

Ideas:

● Make a point of looking out for each other and being observant of what’s going on.

● You can even make it official by joining a neighborhood watch program.

● Don’t have one? Consider launching a neighborhood watch program with the help of other interested neighbors.

Take action: Some police forces use online mapping tools that provide crime alerts to people in neighborhoods where recent criminal activity occurred.3 Share this information with your neighbors.

HELP OUT LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

4. Boost your civic engagement. Regardless of your politics, you can get more involved as a citizen to make a positive difference in our community.

Ideas:

● Sign a petition to make a needed change in our community.

● Join a peaceful march, protest, or rally to support a cause dear to your heart.

● Attend local school board meetings, town halls, or city council meetings to understand (and have a voice in) local issues.4

● Watch (and read) a variety of local news sources to get balanced reporting on what’s happening in our community.

● If you don’t know your neighbors very well, introduce yourself.

● Then make a commitment to check in on those who might need help, such as an elderly neighbor.

● Get plugged into the resources and events in our town by visiting local museums, taking historical tours, borrowing materials from our local library, and attending community festivals.

Take action: Do you know who our local leaders are, such as our mayor or city councilwoman? Get to know their names, their policies, and their stand on issues that affect our community. Subscribe to their newsletter and follow them on social media.

5. Support local businesses. Our community has been impacted by the pandemic, with many businesses being forced to limit capacity, instill social distancing efforts, and even shutter entirely in some cases. Help keep money in our local economy by shopping local instead of relying on online shopping from national chains.

Ideas:

● From handcrafted soaps and one-of-a-kind apparel to locally produced chocolate and small-batch wines, you’ll find plenty of unique gifts at the small businesses that dot our community.

● Consider purchasing tickets to attend live-streamed holiday concerts and shows.

● Buy cookies and other baked goods from our local bakery.

● Get takeout from our local restaurants.

● Support local farmers by purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables at community farmer’s markets.

Take action: If you’re concerned about shopping in person right now, many of these businesses, though small, offer online shopping, with options for in-store pick-up, curbside delivery, and/or mail options.

6. Donate to local charities. Nonprofits could always use your financial support, so consider making a monetary donation to help them carry out their mission in our community. But if money is tight (or you want to support in other ways), think beyond just donating dollars.

Ideas:

● Consider donating to a charity in someone else’s name as an altruistic gift on behalf of a friend or relative.

● Give blood to our local blood bank.

● Donate new or used books to our community library.

● Send school supplies to our neighborhood elementary school.

● Help struggling neighbors by donating blankets to the homeless.

● Pick out toys to give to a charity that caters to families. 5

Take action: Many collection efforts run by charitable organizations and businesses take place during the holidays. Look to see what’s already taking place in our community and choose one or more to give to this season.

CARE FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS

7. Organize a holiday food drive. This year, in particular, people are struggling to pay their bills and put food on the table. The pandemic has caused many businesses to close or reduce their staff size, putting many people out of work.

Ideas:

● If you personally know someone who needs help buying groceries, reach out and offer to help that one family.

● If not, partner with a local food bank, soup kitchen, nonprofit or community organization that feeds people in need.

● Round up a few friends, family, co-workers, or neighbors to collect food for a few weeks. Then deliver the bounty in time for the holidays.

Take action: Take advantage of your grocery store coupons and buy-one-get-one offers to inexpensively stock up on nonperishable goods.

8. Adopt a family or an individual. The holidays can be a struggle, especially financially, for some families. They might not be able to buy a Christmas tree or presents for their children. Maybe their holiday meal consists of boxed macaroni and cheese because they can’t afford a turkey and fresh vegetables. You can make a difference by “adopting” a particular family (or even just a child) to help make their holiday special.

Ideas:

● If you know a needy family, help them directly.

● If not, ask a community group for the name of a family or individual in need.

● Some businesses even sponsor toy drives or “angel trees” where you can pick the name of a needy family off the tree and buy from their wish lists.

Take action: This works great as a family project. Get the kids in your life involved to help make holiday cards and pick out toys to give to the children in the adopted family.

9. Volunteer. Depending on your schedule and your preferences, you might be able to volunteer in-person or from home, whether it’s a one-time effort or ongoing project. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people in your community as you make a positive impact together for a shared cause.

Ideas:

● Give your time to a cause or organization that really matters to you, such as your local school, animal rescue organization, mental health awareness group, or environmental nonprofit.6

● Tap into a skill you already have, like creating videos, and offer your services.

● Or learn a new skill (like fundraising) to benefit your cause of choice.

Take action: Start with your local community to see where its needs are the greatest. Make a point to help this holiday season, perhaps extending your commitment throughout 2021.

10. Perform random acts of kindness. Don’t think you need to “go big or go home” in your give-back efforts. You can make a big difference one small act at a time.

● Give a generous tip to a waitress.

● Pay for the coffee of the car behind you in the drive-through.

● Take care of a neighbor’s pet while they’re out of town.

● Send holiday cards to deployed military personnel.

● Deliver a plate of homemade holiday cookies to our local fire or police station.

● Smile at a stranger.

● Rake leaves for an elderly neighbor.

● Thank your child’s teacher for all their hard work this year.

● Send an uplifting text to a friend.

● Compliment someone.

● Help a coworker with an unpleasant task.

Beyond breast cancer: #WhyIWrite

Today is National Day on Writing. The hashtag #WhyIWrite has people around the country sharing their stories about their way with words. Mine is a long story. Still, it’s mine.

Indulge me a bit, please.

I’d like to look beyond breast cancer. I’d like to talk about #WhyIWrite.

Today is National Day on Writing.

The day promoted by the National Council of Teachers of English recognizes the importance, joy and evolution of writing through a tweetup, using the hashtag #WhyIWrite. The day also celebrates events hosted by educators across the country.

For me, Why I Write …

> I’m a pretty reserved person. Put a few bourbons in me, though, and that’s not necessarily the case. Still, on a daily basis before noon, I’m quiet, contemplative and observant. I don’t like to speak unless I’m spoken to. Writing lets me change that. I have a voice when I’m behind the keyboard. I can talk like a lady. I can swear like a sailor. I can even admit some of my deepest secrets with a bit of humor and behind-the-scenes honesty.

> When I was a child, I woke one Christmas morning to find a red and white plastic typewriter with a note pecked out and addressed to me. Santa Claus brought me a typewriter and he left a nice note. This BLEW my little blonde mind. I remember how I felt that morning, knowing Santa Claus cared enough to spend a few minutes wishing me well and encouraging me to put my own words to paper. My next typewriter was an electronic model my grandmother gifted me as I entered college. Personal computers were just starting to make a splash and I was still chained to a trusty typewriter. If I had my choice today, I would be pounding out my blog on sheets of white paper bound tightly to a roller, ribbon ink staining my fingers, using as much white correction fluid as I could stomach and quietly scanning these documents into the computer, onto my blog, readers being none the wiser.

> When I was a junior in high school, a language arts teacher charged my class with a creative writing assignment. From what I remember, there weren’t many parameters around the assignment. He wanted us to write a story the class could read and judge. For a few days, I thought about the assignment. I had a nugget of an idea and I started researching names for my main character. I no longer have that story but I wish I did. I was absent the day my class read the assignments. When I returned the next day, the teacher pulled me aside and said the class voted my story among the top two. The story was about a young man who fell in love with a much younger girl in the neighborhood. The man often played with the young girl and, on occasion, watched over her while the girl’s mother was busy at work. People in the neighborhood whispered about this man and the little girl. He did not care. The man gently brushed the girl’s hair. Carefully cooked her favorite foods. He doted on her, spoiled her. The man called the little girl, ‘Doll Baby.’ In the end, the little girl and her family moved away. The man was left with a black and white photograph and a small pink hairbrush.

I think the little girl’s nickname, ‘Doll Baby,’ the title of my story, freaked out my teacher. I explained how I came up with the story and the title. I said my grandfather always called me ‘Doll Baby.’ The teacher looked dumbfounded. I quickly continued this was simply a pet name from my loving grandfather to his first grandchild. He was entirely ‘grandfatherly’ to me. Always.

I will never forget how my classmates looked at me after they read that story. Some were a little shocked. Some who never talked to me before sought me out, wanted my suggestions for their writing. It was heady.

> In college, after failing miserably at my first course of study, sports medicine, I enjoyed a few semesters of English classes while casting about trying to find my way in life. One class introduced me to the brilliance of Flannery O’Connor. Another class, taught by a former poet laureate for the state of Colorado, again tapped into my creative writing ambitions. One assignment had me writing about the desolate landscape around Lander, Wyo., and The Wind River Indian Reservation. My brother and I often spent time in Lander and around The Res growing up. My aunt worked as a government liaison in the community.

My story focused on a white landowner and the Native American man who helped tend his land. I wrote about the coyotes that wailed into the night only breaking through the howling wind on occasion. I wrote about the colorful trout that swam in shallow pools and jumped into the air to snag mosquitos hovering above the bone-cold river. And, I wrote about the relationship the two men enjoyed. Both were crusty, cantankerous individuals. Still, they finished each other’s sentences. They knew how strong to make the coffee. They were fiercely devoted to each other. It wasn’t a ‘Brokeback Mountain’ kind of devotion. (I saw that movie decades later and smiled at the casual similarities.) Instead, it was the comradery shared by men who worked together for decades. In the end, the white landowner dies. His friend buries him on a hilltop so he can still watch over his land. He builds a makeshift headstone and leaves a note. The contents of the note are never revealed and I never said what happened to the Native American.

When the class critiqued my story, there were a few decent comments. Some nice words about the scenes I wrote. Then, a young man sitting across from me chimed in and said he thought the story was ‘trite’ and ‘corny.’ I smiled, nodded and thanked my classmates for their feedback. Afterward, the teacher saw me leaving. She smiled and shrugged. I will never forget that night in a lecture hall at Colorado State University. My first real brush with criticism of my work.

> Eventually, I landed in journalism, writing stories about the communities where I lived. My first beat was as a regional reporter for the college newspaper. I enjoyed getting out, away from campus and reporting on the city beyond the university. After college, I landed a job at my hometown newspaper, returning to the small Northern Colorado city where I grew up. In truth, I was a terrible reporter in those early days. I was tasked with covering a university in the community; weekend crime; health & wellness; and, religion. It was a broad beat for a beaten broad. However, during my time at this newspaper, I was fortunate to find my legs with a couple stories that stick with me. The first was a late-night barn fire that involved a large chicken coop, many dead birds and one scrappy hen a firefighter pulled to safety and tried to revive with a child’s oxygen mask. I still have the front page of that edition. The photo is glorious. The story was well received even though the hen did not pull through. The publisher even gave me a clap on the back for getting out to a late-night blaze with a photographer in tow. Another story that sticks with me from those early days was a feature about a man farming a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ plot. For decades, this man’s devout family had planted and rotated crops at the site. His first remark to me was something like, ‘There’s no better time of year than the spring. Everything is new, filled with promise.’ For some reason. that resonated with me. I was new to journalism. I was filled, I thought, with some promise.

Fast forward, my career in journalism took me to different states, covering everything from a group of young hoods associated with Sammy the Bull Gravano in a Phoenix suburb to a young boy scout accused of sexual assault who fled the country before facing charges to a pair of wayward moose far flung from home resting beneath giant shade trees along Colorado’s busy Interstate 25.

I was fortunate to work with amazing, brilliant, angry, obnoxious, glorious and gifted people during my time in newspapers. I left journalism after a corporate reorganization that soured my stomach. The day I left the newsroom, I stood with people I hired straight out of college and those more old and gray than me and I cried. I was sure it was the end of my writing life. It tore me apart to stand before the people I worked with, loved and feel so broken down. Little did I know the move would be important.

> When I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 1.0 in 2013, I remember standing in a cold exam room, stretching my neck high so I didn’t have a double chin and snapping a selfie. I was about to have a biopsy and I thought this was an important moment to capture. When I look back at that photo, I remember exactly how I felt. I was cold. I was scared. And, I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or curse. To find my way, I started researching breast cancer issues. I started writing about every indelicate and indiscreet moment with my cancer. When I look back, my words written as the Cancer Diva are helpful, I think. They are also difficult for me. I never expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer. I never expected to learn far more about this disease than I ever wanted to. I’m glad I did, though. In a strange way, this disease made me write again. I felt like myself again. Although I was sick, bald and barfy, I could put on my Cancer Diva persona and tell stories about the disease. I could try to help people understand a diagnosis or simply find help when they needed a service to clean their house. When my hair started to grow back after a year’s worth of chemo, I thought it was time for the Cancer Diva to exit stage left, quietly make her way to retirement.

After three years in remission, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 2.0. Cancer had made camp in my bra again and I was scared. I shut down.

My words about the disease were few and far between. Having this diagnosis after doctors, nurses, secretaries, family and friends told me I did everything right the first time was too much. The diagnosis wasn’t great, Stage 3C metastatic cancer. So, I pledged to get through treatment quietly. I didn’t want to write about how terrified I was. I didn’t want to burden people with the emotion that comes with meeting an estate planning attorney while supporting a post-surgery fluid drain. I didn’t want to dwell on how exhausted, angry and hurt I was.

Recently, however, I have started to feel like myself again. My words are coming more easily. I can, again, laugh about some of the absurdities of day-to-day life with cancer.

In my new blog, Twice Bitten, I try to talk about what I can remember from the past year of treatment. I try to put my words to use again.

If you’re still with me after all this, Thank You. Knowing there are people out in the world reading my words is Why I Write. Knowing that someday my words might help another person facing cancer is Why I Write.

Mostly, Why I Write is because it helps me parse, put into perspective and process what life throws my way. I feel fortunate to have people who no longer find my words ‘trite’ or ‘corny.’

Why I Write is because this woman behind the keyboard is my most flawed, fractured, honest self.
