Militarie Gun Unleashes Electrifying New Single "Thought You Were Waving" with Thrilling Video!
Militarie Gun, the Los Angeles-based hardcore band, is back with their new single “Thought You Were Waving,” accompanied by a cheeky Neta Ben Ezra-directed video that portrays the band in unruly and dangerous situations. Premiered by Zane Lowe on his New Music Daily show, this track marks the first fresh material from the band since their acclaimed debut album, "Life Under The Gun," released last year. This new release, created with the talented Zachary Dawes (known for his work with Lana Del Rey, Sharon Van Etten, Bully, and Elton John), signals a promising new chapter for Militarie Gun. The single follows closely on the heels of “Gun Under The Gun (MFG),” a track created for the WWE 2K24 video game as the entrance music for Post Malone's wrestling character. Post Malone also included the band's hit "Do It Faster" on his curated playlist for the game's soundtrack, underscoring the band’s growing influence in the music scene. Militarie Gun has been on an international tear, recently wrapping up a series of headline and support shows with Hockey Dad in Australia. Their globetrotting schedule continues through the end of the year, highlighted by a highly anticipated hometown show in Los Angeles on July 25th, supported by Gouge Away, Heart to Gold, and Human Garbage. Festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Project Pabst, Thing Festival, Reading & Leeds, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock are also on the horizon. Additionally, the band will embark on a European tour with Lip Critic, Pluto The Racer, Never Yours, Chiefland, daysdaysdays, and Tripsun on select dates, and will join Manchester Orchestra for the 10-year anniversary tour of their album "COPE" across North America in September. Tickets for all upcoming shows can be found here. Earlier this year, Militarie Gun released "Live Under The Sun," a mini-documentary that showcases the band and their collaborators reimagining tracks from the "Life Under The Sun" EP at Manchester Orchestra’s Atlanta studio. Featuring guest performances from Manchester Orchestra, Marisa Dabice of Mannequin Pussy, and Christine Goodwyne of Pool Kids, this documentary highlights the dynamic and expectation-defying songwriting of bandleader Ian Shelton and the growing community around Militarie Gun. "Life Under The Sun" strips back a selection of songs from their debut album "Life Under The Gun," placing Ian Shelton’s intensely personal songwriting at the forefront. The EP includes standout tracks like "Never Fucked Up Twice" featuring Bully's Alicia Bognanno, "Very High (Under The Sun)," "My Friends Are Having A Hard Time" featuring Manchester Orchestra, "Will Logic" featuring Mannequin Pussy, and a cover of NOFX’s "Whoops I OD'd." "Life Under The Gun" was one of 2023’s most celebrated albums, earning praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME, Revolver, Stereogum, SPIN, Paste, The FADER, and more. It landed on multiple best-of-2023 lists, including those from Alternative Press, The Ringer, UPROXX, Stereogum, and Rolling Stone, who noted that the album "takes everything that’s uniquely cathartic about hardcore and lacquers it with insanely catchy melodies." The album's infectious appeal was showcased in Taco Bell's ad campaign featuring "Do It Faster." Read the full article

freq-out is a sound art collective founded and curated by CM Von Hausswolff in 2003, and it primarily creates site specific sound installations. JG Thirlwell has been a member of the group since its inception.
The latest iteration of freq_out is freq_out 11, designed for interactivity on the internet through the Copenhagen based online radio station The Lake. It consists of a web-mixer and twelve unique and looped minor compositions that may be heard separately or altogether, depending on the mixer faders positions and the web-composer (this being the person behind the computer of course).
Participating artists are JG Thirlwell, Jana Winderen, Mike Harding, Maia Urstad, Permagnus Lindborg, BJ Nilsen, Christine Ödlund, Finnbogi Petursson, Tommi Grönlund & Petteri Nisunen, Anna Ceeh & Franz Pomassl, Jacob Kirkegaard and Kent Tankred.
Go to freq_out 11 here To operate the mixer, move the small squares up and down with your cursor - those are your faders.

To Geri: London music isn't shit! See within!! Love, Cesc
Ok so for the sake of my ~artistic sensibilities~ I have included a lot of songs that I don’t think Cesc would ever have heard of (we should have a poll of where people think the shading into “songs Cesc would actually like” begins), but anyway:
All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks / Lorelei - The Pogues / Christine - Siouxsie & the Banshees / English Summer Rain - Placebo / Think of England - Bear’s Den / Islands - The xx / I Will Wait - Mumford & Sons / Bedroom Hymns - Florence + the Machine / Rolling in the Deep - Adele / No Angels - Bastille ft. Little bit of a dark story
The sun slowly began to lower itself, the rich colors of the sunset deepening as it became darker and darker out in the desert. The wind softly moved, bits of sand and other debris slowly swirling around the lone visitor at the edge of the cliff. Her brown eyes softly scanned the horizon, the rises and curves of ol Route 66 visible in the distance as cars and trucks slowly cruised along it, out west and east to destinations unknown. The vehicle softly sighed, gently rocking on her rust covered frame, the soft creaks and groans of old metal sounding through the still air, only covered by the sound of of an approaching engine. The vehicle softly closed her eyes, allowing the wind the softly move by her as the vehicle grew closer. The truck softly reached up, drawing out a cigarette, giving a light before dragging on it as the vehicle stopped behind her, the soft ticking of an idling engine behind her.
“Christine?” The voice said, the voice sounding a bit worried. Christine gave a sigh, slowly turning around slowly to take a look at her visitor, the Caprice rocking slightly to the left as the eyes of the vehicle scanned Christine.
“Yeah Rodger?” said Christine taking a long drag off her cigarette, the smoke slowly rising upwards as it joined the ever cooling night sky above them
“Dodger been looking for you, been worried since ya left earlier” the older Caprice replied, moving slowly forward to the truck as Christine softly sighed.
“ Why, He looking for a quick easy fuck or something?” she said with a roll of her eyes as she ground her cigarette into the dirt, snuffing it out where it join others of its kind in the soft ground of the desert floor
The Caprice gave an eye roll, moving himself to be up against the hulking form of the rusty truck, the wind around them swirling as day slowly descended into night, their headlights slowly coming to life in the ever encroaching blackness that slowly swallowed them all.
“ You know that’s not why he wanted to see you Christine, I’ll admit he tends to generally have a one track mind when it comes to things, But he was generally worried for you” Rodger said, slightly nuzzling the larger Truck as she gave a rumble of content.
“Like he actually cares” she said softly, twitching softly on her tires as she looked down at the Caprice
“You know he does, He may not show it, being the fuck boy he can be sometimes, But he does consider you his friend” Rodger said, giving a soft chuckle as the night air began to cool around them, Hot moving to cold as the night around them grew darker and darker, sight becoming harder without the glow of their headlights. Christine just gave a heartily chuckle.
“Calling your own brother a fuckboy? Sounds kinda mean” she said, grinning as she hip checked the smaller car next to her, causing him to slide slightly to the right.
“Not mean if its true, that car will fuck anything with a pulse. Just waiting for the day he comes home with a story of him bagging a train.” He mused, smirking as he hip checked the truck back, her body only giving a slight rock from the smaller cars impact.
“Oh god if he does, Story of the ages” the truck said hearty, murring softly as the night full enveloped them, the soft glow of car headlights down below illuminating the floor below them.
“Come on, I’ll buy us both a beer and you can tell me what happened with him, That sound okay?” Rodger asked, tilting slightly as he looked up at Christine.
“Sounds like a plan to me, Maybe if you play your cards right It could get further than drinks” he teased, sticking her tongue out playfully at Rodger, who responded with an eye role.
“Sounds like such a plan” he said with the eye roll, sticking his tongue back out at her.
“Race ya” she grinned, the sound of her V8 roaring as she took off, gravel and dirt flying out behind her as she took off down the road, some of the debris hitting Rodger in the grill and face, causing him to wince slightly.
“NO FAIR, YA HAD A HEAD START” he yelled back, gunning his own engine after her, His sirens roaring to life as he chased after her down the winding side road towards the mother road.
The sound of their engines continued into the night growing fader and fader before, finally, silence. The sound of insects softly chirping as the the night continued on its merry path. The bushes softly rustled in the wind around a sign near the cliff, the broken and worn down handmade sign creaked in the wind as it gently swayed back and forth. The words on the sign where barely visible at the best of times, but for anyone looking for it, it would be hard to miss.
“Suicide Cliffs ahead, please Reconsider”
The night continued on.

Mental Health: A Feminist Issue
by Rachel Sloan
Trigger Warning: The following piece discusses potentially triggering topics including mental illness and suicide.
Ableism has long been a problem within social justice movements, and feminist discourse has a history of excluding or actively ignoring the experiences and input of people with disabilities. There is a particularly troubling lack of feminist research and ongoing dialogue on the way mental health intersects with other social categories and informs our understanding of identity, oppression, and privilege.
If the overarching goal of feminism as a movement is, as famously defined by bell hooks, “to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression,” it’s essential to continually re-examine our approach to issues that target those most vulnerable. There is a tendency to dismiss mental health as a privileged issue, but, realistically, mental disorders affect people of all backgrounds, lifestyles, and identities, and can be particularly damaging to people of marginalized groups.
An estimated one in five adults lives with a mental disorder, and nearly 10 million US adults struggle with what’s considered a serious mental illness – a disorder that interferes severely with one’s daily life and limits their ability to work, cope, or function without impairment. Today, suicide is the second leading cause of death for people age 10-34, and the rate continues to increase. Although mental disorders are often influenced by genetics, socialization and environmental factors play a substantial role in the development of mental health problems.
People living with mental illness and intellectual disabilities need better, more attentive allies. Advocacy for mental health – particularly with regard to relatively common disorders like depression and anxiety – appears to be on the rise, though discussion surrounding mental health and self-care still seems primarily self-serving. Even within feminist circles, the stigma associated with mental illness is still very much in place – especially for those living with personality disorders, psychotic disorders, and other severe, invisible illnesses that remain largely misunderstood. In a neoliberal, capitalist society that prioritizes productivity in the form of profit over its populace's well being, working class families of color tend to suffer the most.
Feminists cannot adequately or inclusively address a number of issues including trans rights, domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, mass incarceration, reproductive justice, and more without an intersectional lens, and the role of mental health requires further analysis. The strength of the stigma, access to affordable and effective healthcare, the perception of one’s mental health status, and the factors that influence mental illness all influence and are influenced by social categories including race, gender, socioeconomic class, sexuality, and physical ability.
The National Eating Disorder Association estimates that 10 million American women suffer from eating disorders, constituting a staggering 85% of anorexia and bulimia cases. Women are two times as likely as men to be diagnosed with panic or anxiety disorders, and are three times more likely to engage in suicidal behavior – men, however, constitute the vast majority of completed suicides. Additionally, transgender people struggle with mental illness and suicidality at a much higher rate than cisgender people, indicating a connection between gender oppression, cis privilege, and mental health. A deeply troubling 19% of trans people have been refused care entirely, and half of all trans people report having to educate their own medical provider about transgender care.
Mental illness exists on a vast spectrum, and no one experience is representative of the rest. I suffer from BPD, and although it brings daily, unpredictable, often debilitating challenges, my identity as a white cis woman from a middle-class family provides me with opportunities and respect not necessarily afforded to people lacking the same privileges. In her telling piece for The Fader, Christine Pungong depicts the obstacles she faces as a black woman with BPD, identifying the heightened stigma that stems largely from the fact that “we live in a world that doesn’t grant black women vulnerability.” She details how black women are expected to appear strong and unemotional, and the notion of mental illness as a sign of weakness within black families and communities. Sociocultural expectations, perceptions, and stereotypes continue to prevent people from feeling comfortable or entitled to seek treatment.
There is an alarming lack of adequate, accessible, affordable, mental healthcare for already marginalized populations. Furthermore, it’s important to recognize that experiences within healthcare, as with any institution, are gendered, racialized, and otherwise shaped by perceptions of identity. For these and other reasons, black women are less likely to receive effective treatment for their mental health, though they actually exhibit higher rates of mental illness – unsurprising considering the stress and obstacles caused by systemic racism and sexism.
Allyship is not about comfort, but about action and social change. The phrase “If It’s Not Intersectional, It’s Not Feminism” can be found plastered on protest signs, t-shirts, and across social media platforms since the Women’s March. However accurate, this type of performative solidarity is, in the case of many mainstream feminist movements, where recognition of intersectionality begins and end. Feminists that continually prioritize self-fulfillment and individual empowerment over the liberation of marginalized people fail those most in need of active, supportive allies.
Moving forward, those who identify with the feminist movement must make concerted efforts to include people battling mental illness in their work, elevate their voices, account for the diverse experiences and needs of people with mental disorders, and study the connections between mental health and other, overlapping systems of oppression and privilege. In order to affect real change for the most vulnerable populations, it’s necessary for feminist politics, advocacy, and scholarship to apply an intersectional framework to further examine the role of mental health in upholding systems of oppression.
People with mental disorders and intellectual disabilities are at a much higher risk of harm than the rest of the population, thus signaling the need for feminist action. Not only are prisons disproportionately filled with poor people of color, but the majority of people in prisons are mentally ill. Additionally, it’s no secret to anyone paying attention that US police present a specific threat to black people, and a frightening 2015 study revealed that people with severe untreated mental illnesses are 16 times more likely than other civilians to be killed by US law enforcement. A disproportionate number of the homeless population is mentally ill people of color and, contrary to popular belief, most people with mental disorders are not violent, and are actually over ten times more likely to be victims of violent crime than those without mental illness. The majority of people living in poverty, thus lacking the resources to prioritize mental health care, are people of color. The overlap between oppressed identities and untreated mental health problems can lead to a number of additional obstacles preventing upward mobility and the possibility of liberation.
Rachel Sloan is a 24-year-old Kentuckian with dreams of a feminist utopia. She's a proud queer woman with a passion for radical intersectional feminism and mental health advocacy. As a survivor of mental illness, she speaks out about her experiences in hopes of raising awareness and chipping away at the stigma.

3 Prose Poem Collaborations in Pith
The newest issue of Pith just landed, and it includes three of the collaborative prose poems I've been writing with Dustin Nightingale -- "It Is Very Scary To Close One Eye," "When a Breeze Slides Up the Hill You're Waiting On" and "The Way We Slowly Fall Apart" -- along with new work by Nava Fader, S. Jane Sloat, Christine Scanlon, Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick, Doug Luman, E.G. Cunningham, Will Cordeiro, and Seth McKelvey. As our full-length book manuscript begins its journey to try to find a publisher, it's great to have these poems in the world at Kin Press/Pith. Thanks so much Meg Cowen and J. C. Mlozanowski!
Read the poems HERE.

Songs of the summer 2018: our writers pick their favourite tracks
As we reach that time of year when debates heat up over which track will be named most likely to soundtrack the hotter months, which songs are Guardian writers picking?
Ariana Grande No Tears Left to Cry
youtube
There is a fine art to the ballad banger. From Gloria Gaynors I Will Survive to Robyns Dancing On My Own, they require equal parts defiant survivalism and a bruised vulnerability. No Tears Left to Cry the first comeback single from Grandes forthcoming album Sweetener does both, filling summer dance floors with a beat-heavy sway, and also announcing her return in the face of prior tragedy with steely assurance. No Tears Left to Cry is an oath to keep the party throbbing no matter the cost. I just want you to come with me, she pleads. Im pickin it up, loving, Im livin so we turnin up. With twists and turns that keep listeners on their toes, its influence spans genres and eras, from new jack swing to grandiose pop, with Grande stamping her sweet yet vital falsetto all over the track. We way too fly to partake in all this hate is a great mantra for 2018, and all the punchier given the songs sticky hooks. EB
Kacey Musgraves High Horse
youtube
Consider this an endorsement not just for High Horse, Kacey Musgraves exuberant country-pop send-off to a man who thinks hes John Wayne, but for the entirety of her record Golden Hour, the most perfect collection of summertime tracks since Frank Ocean dropped Blonde in August 2016. Though it runs mostly counter to the US national mood, and prevailing trends in pop music, Golden Hour is a mature, delightful, gorgeously visual album, one where Musgraves lyrics wrap around her melodies like a vine. Any number of its songs make for good warm weather listening the opening and title tracks, specifically but High Horse certainly lends itself most easily to the coveted song of the summer designation. Marrying a disco beat to Musgraves Texan lilt, it typifies what the singer herself called space country, a cross-genre sound inspired in equal part by marriage and acid trips. JN
George Ezra Shotgun
youtube
Look, there were cooler songs I could have chosen: one of Risn Murphys brilliant singles with Maurice Fulton. Lizzos anthem-in-the-making Boys. Christine and the Queens immaculate Girlfriend (or to be properly cooler-than-thou, Damn, Dis-Moi, the French version). But I cant lie. This summer Ill be riding shotgun underneath the hot sun with George Ezra, whose ode to razzing around coastal roads in a car packed full of sweaty bodies and crisp crumbs is, I have accepted, essentially perfect. Plus the enjoyably mindless chorus vibrates at the peak frequency that any sunbaked brain can handle. LS
AJ Tracey and Not3s Butterflies
youtube
Over the past few years, UK rap has fallen under the spell of afrobeats and afroswing, a shift thats run parallel to the cool-ification of African culture more generally (see: Black Panther, the Nigeria kit). There hasnt been such a love affair with Caribbean music here, however. Enter AJ Tracey, the buzzy Ladbroke Grove MC, and his mate Not3s formerly the Addison Lee guy, now a rising rap star. Africas really well represented now, so hold tight with my African friends but my culture isnt represented, Tracey told the Fader earlier this month. And so the pair created a dancehall-inspired banger with refs to a posterior thats bigger than Jupiter, shooters gettin peeled like a mango, and even a nod to Lethal Bizzles Fester Skank. Could it kickstart a wave of Caribbean-style hits? Maybe. But for now its in an arch and impossibly laid-back league of its own. HJD
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Mainland
youtube
From the possible indie rock album of the year, Hope Downs, this Melbourne quintets exuberant recent single could hardly sound more summery if it came with its own deckchair. And yet, those chiming power-pop guitars and uplifting tambourine bashes conceal an oncoming storm. The song was inspired by singer-guitarist Tom Russos visit to his parents birthplace in the Aeolian Islands, near Sicily, where he read about the Mediterranean refugee crisis. Thus, with vivid imagery of rotting piers and jagged rocks, Mainland reflects on the gulf between the secure and the dispossessed, and the randomness of fate and privilege: We are just paper boats bobbing adrift afloat / While winds of fortune shove us where they will / Woke up coughing on the shore, cold outcrop broken, sore / Back on the mainland, the chimps were coming up trumps. Its a deceptively feelgood anthem with a message for humanity during this hazy, crazy season in the sun. DS
Parcels Tieduprightnow
youtube
The de facto sound of summer tends to come with whomping bass and a throbbing kick-drum. It comes from open car windows, through the doors of bars late at night, or played tinnily through leaking headphones on buses. The sound I prefer is less 3am than 6pm, a hazy evening with a cold drink, something that skips rather than hammers. Parcels, from Australia, were noticed last summer when Daft Punk worked with them on Overnight. This years Tieduprightnow is less insistent, but just as lovely: pitched at a place where Orange Juice or Haircut 100 have turned the Chic knob on their amps up to 10, and the Byrds knob down to 0, and paired with a video that suits it perfectly: the band drive around the coast, not doing very much. Theres some surfing, theres a game of beach cricket. It looks how the record sounds: like joyful, aimless fun, the kind of day, and the kind of song, youd be happy to live through forever. MH
Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin I Like It
youtube
Its a bit on the nose, really, but these things often are. The artist of the moment paired with the Latin trap thats commanded the airwaves for a year-plus underpinned by an accessible, widely known sample in Puerto Rican singer Pete Rodriguezs 1967 boogaloo classic. The fourth single off Cardi Bs loaded debut LP, already popular even before Hot 97 started playing it every 10 minutes over the past month, is an irresistible bilingual trap-salsa bop that oozes exuberant summer vibes. Ella Mais Bood Up may be the sentimental choice (never more than after Sundays BET awards), but Cardis most vibrant triumph yet, with memorable assists from reggaeton titans Bad Bunny and J Balvin, is the one youll spend the next few months hearing from car windows. Youd be hard-pressed to engineer a better song of the summer in a lab. BAG
The Internet Come Over
youtube
Less of a pool party anthem and more of a rooftop bar scene-setter, the second track from the Internets new album Hive Mind is one of their finest to date, a sexy, slinky Prince-inspired ode to getting an object of desire to stop playing games. The song sees Syds delicate yet distinctive voice imploring a girl to give her the green light to come over, and by the time Steve Lacys guitar solo sneaks in, the sneakily effective argument is impossible to ignore. Theres a seductive sunset vibe to the accompanying arrangement and while the understated mellowness, a characteristic trait of their music as a whole, might not sound out quite as loudly as traditional songs of the summer, the balmy effect will stick around for far longer. BL
Disclosure Ultimatum
youtube
After a 15-month hiatus, the brothers Lawrence are back with Ultimatum, a shimmering sonic sunbeam driven by a vocal sample from Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara. While the last Disclosure album, 2016s Caracal, was a singles-oriented affair powered by cameos from pop megastars including The Weeknd, Lorde and Miguel, this new single suggests a return to form for the twentysomething brothers who were praised as the new lords of house music with their 2013 debut Settle and its worldwide hits Latch, F For You and White Noise. Shedding the standard verse/chorus structure, Ultimatum is more dancefloor oriented than those early tracks, and subtle in its moments of tension release, with builds dissolving into synth jazz better suited for daytime parties than darkened clubs. We have been missing you all immensely, Disclosure tweeted with the 17 May track release, so we wanted to share something weve been working on with you now the sun is shining, the trees are green and some dancefloors need filling. Their new album is expected next year; in the meantime, this Ultimatum demands you dance. KB
