“There is a riot in this city, in opposition to the Draft, which threatens to be quite serious. . . .”
On 7/13/1863 in NYC, white immigrants rioted out of anger at the rich who could avoid the draft, and then turned their violence toward Black people.

Department of the East,
New York City, July 13. 1863.
Paulding Rear Admiral H.
Sir,
There is a riot in this city, in opposition to
the Draft, which threatens to be quite serious. I have
ordered all the troops in the forts in this harbor to report
to Colonel Nugent A. A. Provost Marshal General No. 106
243/270 Leonhard St. New York City - but in all, they amount to only
a small band. Can you not furnish us with a company
or more, of Marines for that purpose, by aiding us at this
moment, you will confer a favor on the city authorities,
as well as myself.
I remain, sir,
Very respectfully
Your Obedt Servant

Guess Who’s Back, Back Again
Tumblr media
Reylo’s back, tell a friend?
Well, I don’t know about that but the announced return of what will be Jedi Master Rey sure fanned the flickering flames of hope that if she is back, then so will be the much-missed Ben Solo.
While it had been rumored for some time that a new SW film was in production for release in 2025 and that it took place after TROS, I was genuinely shocked that it was 1) about rebuilding a new Jedi Order and 2) they brought back Daisy Ridley this soon.  It took 34 years to bring back the OT crew and 16 years to bring back Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to their PT roles.  I was thinking it would be at least 2029 before any ST people returned.  However, Daisy and Kathleen Kennedy have remained in touch and there was the mysterious random visit to Lucasfilm last year while she was in the “neighborhood.”  Personally, I’d thought it had something to do with possibly bringing Rey in at the end of The Mandalorian’s run.  *Shrug.*  What do I know?
I do not necessarily think at this point that Rey will be the main character of the film but I think she will definitely have a significant role.  Rey--and Daisy for that matter--will be in her 30s and still capable of a lot the physicality required for action sequences.  I also think there’s an excellent chance Finn will return.  They just have to convince John Boyega they have something worthwhile for him to do.  Given that TROS set him on that road, it would be weird if he wasn’t around if the Jedi are the focus.  Other ST characters could pop in here and there as well.  Could you imagine not having BB-8?  Come on.
There have been many SW projects announced and canceled but this one is different.  While past projects were pretty vague, this one and the Dave Filoni Mandalorian film seem to be on much firmer ground.  The New Jedi Order script is going through revision after Lucasfilm dumped Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, but the current director still has her job.  I’m certain Bob Iger laid down the law to get more films out.  When you trot out your star like that, it’s too late to turn back.  This is going to get made hell or high water.
But of course what Reylo Nation cares about is, will this be the opportunity for Bensurrection?  That depends on many factors, one of which is being able to snag a very busy Adam Driver.  The most significant question for me isn’t so much whether Ben will appear in the film, it’s whether Lucasfilm has recognized it made a mistake killing off Ben and leaving its heroine without her best foil.  That  I don’t know.

St. Roch Fine Oysters +
Bar
Tumblr media
It's weird for me to think of St.Roch as a downtown Raleigh fixture when I remember the space's past life as the Wilmoore Cafe, which was two iterations ago for 223 South Wilmington Street. But it has already been 7 years since Ashley Christensen closed her coffee shop Joule and passed the space to Sunny Gerhart to create St.Roch.
Tumblr media
As food media people, we love the new thing. We flock to the new restaurant openings, get wrapped up in the excitement of possibilities. I'm as guilty of that as much as any other. But St.Roch throughout its tenure in downtown has shown the city who they are. St.Roch doesn't need to ride on possibilities, as they have 7 years of serving stellar food. And that's something that deserves excitement too.
Tumblr media
Accompanied with attentive service, the thing that elevates St.Roch is execution. Every piece of my dirty rice duck confit was excellent individually but had a purpose when brought together. Succulent duck, flavorful rice and punch and sweetness from pineapple mostarda.
Tumblr media
The BBQ Shrimp was the same way featuring a coconut curry that could be sold and enjoyed by the glass.
Through the ebbs and flows of the dining scene and downtown Raleigh, St. Roch has stood consistent in its exceptional food. Which may not always result in a Tik Tok or Instagram frenzy but maybe it should.

HC Dump: Gabby's kids edition
Ana's haphephobia is incredibly difficult for her to deal with on a daily basis and was a monumental herculean task for her to endure when more kids started staying with Gabby. Thanks to her trauma she can hardly stand people touching her with very few exceptions that she's learned to trust such as Gabby. With the younger kids she's been able to swallow it down for the necessary aspects because she rationalizes that they're children and of no threat/harm and that they do love her like a big sister/second mom. Anyone else however she avoids like the plague, especially men.
Mia has VOWED to ruin her father one day by becoming famous and successful. She has it planned out to the detail how it will happen and how she will announce their relationship and the proof of it before society and the press. She's even planned her revenge dress though everyone has tried to correct her on the term, but she refuses to budge because that is what it is. A dress for revenge and decimation on the man who destroyed a little girl. Pretty eyes aren't the only thing she inherited from Silas St. Claire since she wears spite equally as well.
Gabby is sorely tempted to kick Hayden out of the apartment, but not for bad reasons. She feels an enormous guilt about him dedicating so much to their ragtag family that she worries he's not setting up for his own life and future outside of them. She wants him to have his own life outside of family because one day the kids will be grown and gone and he needs to have his own life, dreams and future.
Lily doesn't know what she's going to do. Ever or when she grows up. Its a question she gets asked by adults all the time and she just sheepishly shrugs and half hides behind Gabby. She's a little girl with a genius intellect, but is terrified to use it after her experience with her last set of foster parents who just wanted her to be normal. Gabby tries to let Lily be Lily whether she wants to read fantasy books or science textbooks. More often than not though Lily's intellect is kept on the downlow for her to reveal herself- if she wants. The rule in the family however is that they don't push or diminish anyone's intellect in the house and that everyone helps everyone with homework. Sometimes though Lily will sit up early in the morning with Gabby as she balances the household accounts and bills and chirps in to help out.
Sophia lives in her own world where she is a princess and everything else is her kingdom. No one in the family has the heart to tell her otherwise as she is the only one in the family that still has that childhood innocence that was taken from all of them- aside from Victoria. Sophia is also obsessed with the Disney princess by the same name.
Every child in the family, except Nick, pitches in to help care for Victoria. Gabby, however, is mildly concerned that the twins, Noah and Erin, will use her as part of their science experiments and so they never get sole watch over the six month old. Of the entire family its Sophia and Victoria that get 'new' clothes because Mia makes them new sets because they're small and so its easier and cheaper with the little amount of fabric needed.
One of the best days of the year for the Christensen clan is when their local thrift store has their yearly 75% off sale and Gabby lets the kids pick out ten items of clothing or toys. They attack with a game plan as they head into the throng of people also there for the sale and divide and conquer.
Things Gabby is terrified of is having to give 'The Talk' to the younger boys in the household. She goes back and forth on asking Hayden to give the younger boys the conversation, but also worries that even he doesn't know quite the right way since he's only twenty-three himself.
All the girls in the Christensen clan have a means of self defense on them because they live in a rough neighborhood. Gabby has a taser, Ana has a high frequency alarm and a taser, Mia has pepper spray/high frequency alarm. Lily has a high frequency alarm/tracker along with Sophia who also has the alarm/tracker and a whistle. Victoria however has a small tracker/airtag that is always tucked into her pocket.

2024 Minutes
Minutes: Bishop Committee Meeting
January 14, 2024 @ 12:25pm
Attendance: Ed and Bernadette Hamilton, Mary Carter, Camille Norman, Deacon Dan Dykstra, Stephanie Edison, Carla and Ron Parish, and Jean Christensen
Deacon Dan opened the meeting with prayer.
Motion was made to accept the November minutes as written and no corrections were made.
OLD BUSINESS:
Gym Floor: It was recommended, moved and seconded with final approval by the Bishop’s Committee to pay Sexton, Ron Parris, $5,500 to complete repairs on the gym floor. Ron will receive a deposit of $2,500. The contract includes cleaning the stage underneath, which has been completed; previous work of varnish will be removed and recovered, and other items listed in the contract including putting the planks down to replace the damaged wood, no wood putty, and put down the floor materials purchased. The fee will be split at $2,750 between St. George’s Church and St. George’s Community Center.
Mortar flaking will be addressed and Ron will be in charge. The price was quoted as $60 for four (4) large cans. It is a spray on product. This still needs to be addressed in our November meeting. Ron was not present, out of town, and no report was made.
Deacon Dan will talk to Rev. Matt Bradley about the Homeless Project. St. George’s is able to provide meal/s for the group. In discussions, the committee felt that we could provide meals. Further discussion is needed to determine the number of times we could make the meals available for the people and if it would be dinner, snack bag, or breakfast food.
New Business:
Deacon Dan suggested two new projects for St. George’s.

Christmas Food Boxes: Mary reported that we supplied 75 Christmas food boxes to the community.
Leadership Conference: Begins March 2, 2024 in Bowling Green, KY. It is free. Please don’t forget to register if you are interested.

The edges and front need to be repaired. We need to put down the tarps for DTC to continue moving products.
Homeless Project: Deacon Dan reported that the Homeless Project has been delayed until January 2025.
New Resident, Jupiter the Cat: Our cat is here. He is housed in the DTC refrigeration room. He is an adult male, five (5) years old, and fully vaccinated. When he is nervous, he hisses and bites. He has food needed for his transition in his cage, a smaller hut in the cage to sleep in with a blanket. He must be seen at least once a day and remain in his cage for two (2) weeks. At this time, Jean has taken responsibility for his care along with others. The main thing is not to let him out of the doors.
Open House Partnership: The Partnership will meet on March 17, 2024 at Christ Church Cathedral (CCC) at 10:30 am. St. George’s arrived for the morning worship service and stayed for the coffee hour afterwards. Other churches came after their service was complete. Leadership Positions: Ron Parris has been asked and accepted to function in the capacity of Program Director for the Community Center. Because we are not a full parish, he cannot use the title of junior warden. Brother Ron is excellent in his role as a director or securing and recognizing program needs of the St. George Community. However, he is still the sexton for the church and a van driver. An official vote was called by Warden Mary Carter and the vote was a unanimous YES.
Jean Christensen has been asked and accepted the position as Event Coordinator and will maintain the calendar and remain in the position of directing church members as to refreshments needed for events. Any request for us of the facilities by outsides persons should go to Jean. She will discuss with Ron and Mary for availability and if the event is appropriate for the church space. Both of the above positions are voluntary and will meet with Mary Carter in her office in the Tachau House which will be cleaned and shared by all three.
Notes: People can get married in the church but it must be an Episcopal Priest and they must go thru counseling.
If you are interested in the Resolution for Forestry Treatment that happened in 2018, please talk to Camille.

Clothing in the Clothes Closet has been boxed and is ready to go to First Unitarian Church. It was completed by Jean, Camille and Ron.
The fire marshal has not given us a time/date when she will return. Centas, fire extinguisher company, reported that our equipment needs to be updated. Ron will check the fire extinguishers and exit signs upstairs and downstairs. Ron reported that we need three (3) fire extinguishers upgraded. Midwest, the sprinkler system company, will come back on November 7, 2024 at 10am to check our system. We also need two (2) industrial furnace filters for the future.
We have paid off the Bishop Committee Loan of $10,000. Brian wants us to wait until he reconciles the bank accounts for the Diocese before he provides St. George with a payoff information and/or refund from the Diocese.
All convention documents have been submitted to the Diocese. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Anchorage will be the location for the Diocesan Convention on November 8, 2024. Bernadette Hamilton agreed to be the delegate and Stephanie Edison will be the alternate.
NEW BUSINESS:
Deacon Dan will provide us with upcoming repast information and memorial services for Kenneth Price, Jr., grandson of Shirley Crowe.
Deacon Dan is working on printed information for St. George’s Community Center. This info will be shared with the public.
A new group is interested in using the Tachau space: Dwight Taylor of Urban Development Institute for Entrepreneurship wants to have classes of 5-6 people at one time. Mary suggested that he could share space upstairs. It is a business incubator for people wanting to start businesses. Mary will invite him to church to explain his business.
Stephanie Edison, a member on the Endowment Committee, reported that Rev. Horton has been hired by the Diocese Endowment Committee to help churches with evangelism. At this time, he has been assigned to Our Merciful Savior and St. George’s Episcopal Churches. She will invite him to a designated Bishop’s Committee meeting to explain and answer questions.
Ron Parris reported on unity in the community. He wants the church to put in a fence extension to keep human waste off the church property. He would like the fence to extend from the front of the Tachau House to the end of the building and alley. Ron will get estimates. Mary will check on emergency funds at the Diocese. Any lock must not let people in, but people inside must be able to get out.
The van insurance cards have been updated.

2141 S. Throop St.: This part of the sidewalk in Pilsen is nearly nonexistent. It is located a couple blocks north of the Chicago River and, being so large, is impossible for pedestrians to avoid, creating a greater threat. The manhole cover provides an additional obstacle to walkers.
You can report any hazardous sidewalks in the greater Chicagoland area by calling 311 or visiting 311.chicago.gov for more details. If you have any pictures of dangerous sidewalks, you can tweet them to @redlineproject on Twitter.

Historic Music Room Could Be Lost With Planned Redevelopment of Jordan Mansion on Beacon Street by Dan Murphy • September 14, 2023
With the recent sale of the Eden D. Jordan Jr. Mansion and its proposed redevelopment, some fear that the building’s elegant and historic first-floor music room could be demolished and lost to history.
The five-story multifamily dwelling, located at 46-47 Beacon St., overlooks the Boston Common and was built by Eben Dyer Jordan Sr., co-founder of Jordan Marsh department store, circa 1898. (Upon the elder Jordan’s death in 1895, his son, Eden D. Jordan Jr., described as one of the city’s greatest patrons of the arts during his time, inherited the property.) The Italian Renaissance Revival townhouse was sold to become the headquarters for the Women’s Republic Club in the 1930s and ’40s and then acquired by the Unification Church in the mid-1970s. Mainsail Management recently bought the building from the church for $20.5 million.
The building was designated a local National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. ...
The ballroom boasts 28-foot ceilings, with walnut panels, and was designed specifically for string quartets, said Darr Christensen, who managed the building from 2012 to 2017. A lion’s head is carved into the wood stair column, he said, while the approximately 16-foot wood doors leading into the ballroom are adorned with images of peacocks, dragons, and a phoenix.
