I haven't been to Florida since my mother and stepfather took me to Disney World when I was nine. I've never cared for amusement parks, though. I was more fascinated by our stay in Tampa with my stepfather's old friend, a bachelor lawyer, genial and swag-bellied and alcoholic and coke-snorting, with his young blonde girlfriend (evidently one in a procession) and his pale pinkish or orangeish apartment house a quick walk from the beach; and then by the outdoor pool in the courtyard of his complex, where an old man struck up a conversation with my mother and then invited us out to sea on his boat. I played with his red-headed granddaughter and her painfully shy friend, an exchange student from France, who said nary a word in any language and even closed her eyes if you looked at her, as the boat skipped the gory rollers. The spume was like the blood-threaded saliva in the back of a cokehead's throat, since it was what they call a "red tide." Our host, the lawyer, died not very long after that—in his sleep, I believe.

Anyway, I actually do wonder if someone with my theoretical orientation toward literature could find a place in an institution governed by Chris Rufo Thought. My approach has offended certain camps on the left—those who believe that art must be activist, whereas, though there's no need to be categorical, I am closer to believing it must be quietist—and they've told me so, but it may strike more subtly but more deeply at the core tenets of the right. If you're new to my work, I'm not entirely sure where to send you for my "theoretical orientation," but for the simplest version, try this video (start around minute 22), my final pandemic-era lecture for a course called Introduction to Literature. In the lecture, it occurs to me now, I demote the fascist Yeats below the liberal Keats, on grounds aesthetic before they are political, but political too, I suppose.
