When the Jeep parked in front of your house, you shouted at Chris to leave and let you be alone while you hobbled as quickly as you could to the porch. Upon entering the house, you slammed the door shut behind you and leaned against it while grabbing the hockey stick your father used to play with every weekend. Your mother hated that he left it lying by the entrance and always scolded him for it; right now, you were grateful he hadn’t listened those times.

You tightened your grip on the stick and began to crawl around the house with your back against the wall, turning on all the lights as you entered the rooms. Once the ground floor was clear, you did the same on the second floor, and when it was equally empty, you locked your door, placed a chair under the doorknob, and dragged your largest piece of furniture in front of the window, completely covering it. You spent the rest of the night sitting in a corner and managed to rest only when you heard your parents’ voices.

You were on your fifth day when you finally reached your breaking point. You had endured the incessant pain in your arms and head, but your back simply couldn’t bear your weight for another second. Your body was still full of foam when you wrapped yourself in a towel and called Sue Clearwater, asking her to please come to your house with her medical supplies. Sue was a specialized nurse, and many people in the reservation called her when there was a minor accident, as her expertise was in demand. You told her it was urgent because you knew otherwise she wouldn’t come to see you.

The people in the reservation were quite... gossipy. Whatever happened there spread like wildfire and was on everyone’s lips for months, so the breakup between Leah and Sam a few years ago kept everyone on edge for several months. It was a spark that only reignited when the town began to notice that Leah’s very own cousin, Emily, was meeting Sam in the woods almost every day. You remember how your parents talked about it even at the market with people they knew, how everyone told Sue how "sorry" they were.

After that incident, most of the calls to her were for minor injuries, accompanied by awkward questions about her daughter’s state and her niece’s terrible attitude, so she had given up on the idea of helping. She did so at a good time, as just a week later, Emily and Sam's relationship became official.

“I hate men” Umma declared holding her head.

Embry, Quil, Umma and you were in the library preparing an essay for history, when your classmate suddenly spoke.

“What are you talking about?” you asked distractedly.

“About Emily and Sam, silly” Quil replied, taking the blue pen from your hand that you were working with. He wasn’t doing anything important, really; he was just drawing shapes in one of the books.

Embry, who was picking up some books from a shelf, jumped next to you and whispered in your ear “The new gossip in town, aren’t you paying attention?”

You snatched the books from his hands while he smiled from ear to ear; annoying you was his favorite hobby, and any reaction you gave simply fueled him “I only pay attention to things that concern me; what strangers do in their private lives doesn’t interest me”

Embry took a chair from another table and sat next to you. He stared at you for a few seconds when suddenly touched your forehead with his index finger “You’re going to wrinkle” he said, pointing at your furrowed brow.

You swatted his hand away and sat up straighter, crossing your arms in front of you “Can you explain what their relationship has to do with your hatred?” you asked your classmate.

“Because everyone can leave you for someone else” she emphasized, pointing at your friends. “Like Sam, leaving his girlfriend for his girlfriend's COUSIN” the last part was a loud whisper, accompanied by a horrified expression directed at the boys.

“Don’t look at me; if the girl is hot, it’s reason enough” Quil commented, still focused on whatever he was writing.

“You're disgusting” you and Umma said at the same time, both throwing erasers at him. You could hear the other people in the library asking for silence over the laughter of your friends at your table.

A knock on the door pulled you from your thoughts. You turned your neck so quickly it cracked, and you swiftly grabbed the hockey stick that was on the toilet, still carrying it with you. A stupid move considering that if someone were going to attack you, they wouldn't knock on the door.

"Who is it?" you asked.

"Sue, darling. Can I come in?" Her voice made you feel at ease, and after putting the stick back in its place, you let her in.

When Sue entered, she scolded you for not having called her earlier, for being so underdressed in the bathroom with the skylight open, and for leaving the front door key in a flowerpot on the porch. Then she handed you a robe she had taken from your closet and guided you to your bed.

"Alright, what's my diagnosis?" you asked with humor in your voice, receiving a disapproving look in return.

"You're fine, darling. You were very lucky not to have broken any ribs or suffered a lumbar pinching with everything you've been doing since the day of the hit until today" she said while jotting something down on a paper you couldn't see. "But you pushed your body beyond its limits, and that's why you're in so much pain. So from now on, you'll be in bed for several days, and if you want, I can come help you on the days your parents can't be here" She finished speaking and placed the paper on your nightstand, her hand lingering there for a few seconds until she spoke again, this time more quietly than before "You can always... call Embry, I'm sure he—"

You interrupted her with clear disdain in your voice "I'm sorry for interrupting you, Sue, but you should know that I’ll be fine. I have someone to call anyway"

Days had gone by without thinking about Embry, and this wasn’t exactly the best time to bring him to mind. Ever since you saw him that day at the beach, you hadn’t been able to shake the immense guilt you felt over your feelings for him, considering your stable but deceitful relationship with Chris.

Sue let out a sigh as she stroked your arm "Alright... I’ll leave you the things to keep in mind on the paper, and I’ll talk to your mother later" She got up and grabbed her bag, giving you a smile. You returned it until it slowly faded, overshadowed by the one thought that filled your mind.

Would love to hear what you would do with Umma if you’re willing to share

umma was sadly an interesting idea tarnished by what seems to be a lot of production meddling... it's a very impersonal movie despite being about mother-daughter relationships... it has the narrative, visual and plot structure of every conjuring movie. IF I were to change it I'd remove the excessive use of jump scares and soundscares. I'd love to see more of the intimacy that comes from being a single mother's only daughter! the chemistry and interactions between Amanda and Chris to contrast Amanda and her mother's relationship. also I would've set aside the heavy reliance on the supernatural aspect and kept it more vague. the explicitness bothered me a lot. Chris also was such a flat character and I'm sorry to this actress but she was not matching up Sandra oh's energy I fear. also if we're gonna have a wasian granddaughter let's get into mixed politics. it would've benefited from a different color palette too, the colors were too default 4k hd digital

and i, in my very dignified tone, told my mother, "i'll always love chris, umma. but we're just on a break right now. it's okay, though. we have a mutual understanding."

only recently, i started giggling because i told my mother "chris pine is forty two years old now . . ." and, without looking up from the kitchen table from where she was clearing the dishes, she says, "caroline, he's a complete ahjusshi now. that's fine--that might actually be good for you, but he might feel a little hurt if people start asking him if he's your kids' grandfather instead of your kid's father. so just make sure that his feelings don't get too hurt, okay?"

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers: 1. The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has suspended the nationwide planned protest slated for Wednesday. The NLC and other related unions commenced nationwide protests on Tuesday over the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and hardship in the country. 2. The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has increased the benchmark interest rate by 400 basis points to a record 22.75%. The CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, disclosed this while reading the communiqué of the first MPC meeting of the year on Tuesday in Abuja. 3. The Senate has asked the Federal Government to introduce a food stamps programme as a measure to cushion the effect of hunger and food crisis in the country. It also urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to liaise with development partners and other relevant stakeholders, especially the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, which introduced Temporary Food Assistance Programme,a few years ago. 4. A pastor in charge of Celestial Church of Christ, Grace of Comfort Parish, Omitoto, in Osun State, Moris Fadehan, has been reported to have been murdered inside his church by one of his assistants, Lekan Ogundipe. According to sources, the suspect drew the attention of the people to the presence of the partly burnt remains of the pastor inside the church on Monday. 5. A 29-year-old man, Joseph Yakubu, has been arrested by the Plateau State Police Command for allegedly killing his father, Yakubu Dalyop, with a pestle. Yakubu was said to have picked a pestle and hit his father during a disagreement. This led to the victim’s unconsciousness and eventual death. 6. At least 20 students of some boarding public schools in Potiskum, Fika, and Fune local government areas of Yobe State have died from a suspected Meningitis outbreak. It was learnt that the deaths were recorded in Government Science Technical College, Government Girls Science Technical College, and Federal Government Girls College. 7. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Olayemi Cardoso, has distanced himself from the economic hardship Nigerians are currently experiencing. Speaking on Tuesday at the first Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, meeting under his leadership, Cardoso said he and his team were not responsible for the prevailing economic challenges Nigerians were facing. 8. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has commenced sale of dollars to Bureau De Change operators. Announcing the development in a statement on Tuesday, the apex bank said $20,000 will be available to each eligible BDC operator across the country. 9. Barrister Chris Agidy, the Senior Legislative Aide, SLA, to the lawmaker representing Delta North, Senator Ned Nwoko, who was kidnapped by bandits in 2023, has been killed. The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who confirmed this on Tuesday, said the body of the deceased has been recovered. 10. Kaduna State Government has confirmed five deaths following lassa fever outbreak in the state. This was confirmed by the state’s commissioner for health, Hajiya Umma Ahmed, on Tuesday. Umma (2022)

Umma had the ingredients to make a great ghost movie. It almost gets there but ultimately, it isn’t scary or original enough. That said, the film isn't terrible, which leaves it somewhere in the middle and destined to be forgotten.

Amanda (Sandra Oh) and her homeschooled daughter Chrissy “Chris” live on their rural farm without modern technology - being around electricity gives the mother an “allergic reaction”. When Amanda receives the cremated ashes and last possessions of her estranged Umma (mother), her abusive childhood comes back to haunt her.

Written and directed by Iris K. Shim (her first full-length effort), the film shows promise at first. Amanda was punished via electric shocks by her Umma as a child. As an adult, she shuns everything electrical. No light bulbs automatically mean the nights will be darker, the attics more threatening, etc. It means there are no phones to call for help, and no way to easily escape the situation via car either. Amanda was abused as a child, she’s sworn to never become like her mother but she’s so sheltered, so afraid of everything she can’t let go of Chrissy. This fear threatens to turn her into a control freak, and the more we learn about Umma, the more we see that they are, in fact, quite similar. Amanda’s already slightly-unhinged nature also makes her doubly dangerous. It would be quite easy for Umma to possess her daughter and “get away with it”. There are some relatable, very human themes here that are expanded into becoming horrific, which is a step in the right direction.

All that solid groundwork unfortunately doesn’t pay off. For instance, we know Umma’s ghost is real. We never question whether Amanda has simply gone off the deep end. Worse is the lack of tension or of scares. While watching, I kept thinking of Hereditary, of how nightmarish it was, and how peaceful this is in comparison. Shim can’t quite make up her mind about Umma. Electrocuting your daughter as a punishment is monstrous. I’d even say it’s unforgivable, which should make for great drama. How could Amanda make peace with her Umma, particularly when the wicked old woman is returning from the grave to torment her? The resolution isn’t satisfactory. It’s not believable either, not considering the trauma Amanda is still feeling in the present. Other aspects of the film don’t pay off either. There’s the recurring image of a nine-tailed fox but it doesn’t bring anything to the story. Considering the special effects used to create it are “fine” at best, it really should’ve been edited out.

You want to like Umma because Sandra Oh is really good in her role. It's odd how the picture can get certain things so right, and others so wrong. Umma keeps its cast small so that you can get attached to all of the characters, the themes it brings forward are relatable and rich with potential. And then… nothing. The film isn’t scary and ultimately, Umma feels way too familiar. (May 15, 2022)

“  You’re both not really thinking about picking Rogers, are you?” Colonel Phillips said walking next to Dr Erskine and Agent Linda. 

“  I am more than just thinking about it. He is the clear choice.” Dr Erskine said. 

“Agent Gray you are agreeing to this?” Colonel Phillips said. 

“Actually I am, that kid got a big heart, believe it or not despite his size.” Linda said with a proud smirk. 

“  When you brought a ninety-pound asthmatic onto my army base, I let it slide. I thought, what the hell? Maybe he’ll be useful to you, like a gerbil. I never thought you’d pick him.” Colonel Phillips said referring to Rogers as we walk over to watch Peggy train the soldiers.

“  Up.” They heard Peggy. 

“  You stick a needle in that kids arm and it’s gonna go right through him.”Colonel Phillips said. watching Steve struggling whilst training with the other new recruits.

“  Come on, girls.” Peggy commanded. 

“  Look at that. He’s making me cry.” 

“  We are  looking for quality beyond the physical.” Dr. Erskine said. 

“  Do you know how long it took to set up this project?” 

“  Yeah, we know.” Dr Erskine said. 

“All the groveling I had to do in front of Senator What’s-His-Name’s committees?”

“  Brandt. Yes, I know. We are well aware of your efforts.” Linda said rolling her eyes.  

“  Then throw me a bone. Hodge passed every test we gave him. He’s big, he’s fast, he obeys orders. He’s a soldier.”

“  No way, he’s a bully. I recognize his type anywhere.” Linda said crossing her arms in front of her chest.

“  You don’t win wars with niceness.” Colonel Phillips said taking a hand grenade “You win war with guts. Grenade!” He said ripping the pin out and throwing it toward the Soldiers who all scrambles except Rogers who throws himself onto it covering it with his body.  

“Get away! Get back!” Rogers yelled as we wait for it to explode but nothing happens. 

“  It was a dummy grenade. All clear. Back in formation.” Linda said looking at Rogers with a smirk as he looks at us confused.  

“  Is this is a test?” Rogers looks at Linda who gave him a wink. Linda then turns back to Colonel with a smug look on her face and Dr. Erskine had a similar look . 

“  He’s still skinny.” Colonel Phillips said barely able to look at Linda in the eyes walking away 

“And you’re still a grumpy pants” she said making Dr. Erskine chuckle.

“You know Linda you’re going to give him a heart attack one day” Dr. Erskine said. 

 “AND CUT and that's a wrap for today meet back shooting starts at 10am sharp don’t be late ” Joe said getting up from his chair walking away 

 Min then runs over to Chris and jumps on his back for a piggyback ride. 

“Onward!!” Min said making Chris chuckle walking her back to the trailers. 

“So what does the princess want to eat today?” Chris asked. 

“No way I choose yesterday, it’s actually Sebastian turn to pick” Min said jumping off Chris back running over to Sebastian room knocking not long before the door opens revealing dressed to go out Sebastian.

“I choose mexican today now go change you both still in your uniform.” Sebastian said pointing to the clothes.

“Opps totally forgot be back in 15, ganna go freshen up.” She said running over to her room which was right next to his as the boys chuckle.

 After dinner the 3 split like normal Chris and Sebastian retreats to their hotel room for the night while Min sneaks back into the gym to practice dance moves to keep her body pliable since she barely needs to sleep much anyways. Her playlist consist mainly of her fellow K-pop groups that she memorized the dances to. She was lost in the music when the song Lee Hyo-ri Chitty Chitty Bang Bang came on that she failed to notice that Sebastian is leaning on the doorway intrigued in the way she rolls her hips to the song until she finished coming into a complete split.

 “Enjoying the show?” Min said not even looking at Sebastian until he chuckles walking toward her with his hands in his sweats. 

“Actually I did very much, I watched your group stuff before but that was something else. Not something that fits your image at all.” Sebastian said standing over Min who is still in a split looking at him. 

“And what is my image then?” She taunts him before lifting her hand up for him to pull her up. “Your image represents cute, that song is sexy.” He said smirking at her. 

“So you’re saying I am not sexy then?” She pouts.

“I never said that, it’s just different.” 

“I am kidding, trust me I know I am just dabbling in other forms. My manager skyped me yesterday that they pushing a sexy/dark concept next single because SHinee the male version of us just released Lucifer last week which makes me excited because for the past 2 years we have been doing mostly cutesy. I always hated cutesy, I been more dark so this is totally up my ally.” Min said beaming with joy even though she is sweating from all the dances she been doing the past hour and a half.

“Really? I can’t imagine you other then cutesy.” He said grabbing her water bottle before passing it to her for her to drink. 

“Surprise? I am not cutesy at all trust me. Always been a tomboy my childhood wasn't always ...” She was about to ramble again until her laptop lite up with a skype call from one of her besties Tiffany from Girls Generation. She runs over to click open before waving Sebastian over but he only sits next to her. 

“MIN-AHHHHHHH!” Tiffany screamed into the screen.

“TIFF-AHHHHHHH!” Min scream back making Sebastian chuckle. 

“Min-ah we miss you so much. It’s not the same without you here.” Tiffany said pouting 

“Are you skyping me in the studio?” Min asked seeing the familiar surrounding.

“Yeah, I was practicing and missed you. So I called knowing your ass isn’t asleep yet.” Tiffany said before the door opens. 

“Who are you talking to?” Key said walking in front of the screen his face breaking into a bright smile. “Min-ahh oh have I missed you. It’s been boring not having my partner in crime here.” Key said making Sebastian chuckle.

“Yahh who chuckling, is it him???? SHOW YOURSELF!!! I MUST APPROVE!” Key demanded as Sebastian scoots closer to Min and Key squeals. 

“Ooooo you’re hot!! I approve.” Key said as Tiffany nods with wide eyes. 

“Dam Tiffany keep your tongue inside your mouth. This is Sebastian by the way! My new love interest!” Min said snuggling into Sebastian arm making Key laugh and Tiffany stuck her tongue out at her. 

“Anyways Sebastian you better be careful of this one, she is a fireball. Also don’t let her get your phone.” Key warned making Min giggle “Ohh I guess it's too late already.”

“Oh yeah, first day meeting her she confiscates mines and Chris phone and already got her blackmail material. Got any other warning for her though?” Sebastian said making Min playfully slap his arm. 

“Ohh nope no warning, you just have to find out yourself.” Key said as Min gives him a wink. 

“So Key-umma I love your guys new concept. I was practically fangirling in my hotel room watching it. And tell that stupid dino he looks sexy as hell bulking up.” Min said blushing a little. 

“Oh trust me he knows wouldn’t stop talking about it. Been driving us crazy, you been gone for a month-ish and he is already out of control.” Key said. 

“Pft. He’s a big boy.” Min said 

“Anyways Min, I have to go. Duty calls as always got Music Core today. And don’t forget to call Dino he really do miss you a lot, it's the first time in 4 years you guys spends this much time away from each other.”

“I know, I will call him when I have the chance. Tell the crew I miss them too.” Min said. 

“Okdokie love you bitch, Bye Sebastian. It was nice to meet you” Key said waving to the screen. 

“Likewise Key, heard so much about you.” Sebastian said. 

“It better be good things.” Key complained. 

“Bye bitch.” Min smirked seeing Key walked out. 

“Anyways as I was rudely interrupted. How you been love?” Tiffany said finally about to talk. 

“I’ve been good, got this hot man here to keep me company, can’t complain.” Min said nudging Sebastian. 

“So Sebastian by now you probably know how much of a handful she is huh?” Tiffany asked smirking cutely. 

“Oh yeah, Can’t complain though she keeps me on my feet.” Sebastian said shaking his head remembering the pranks Chris and her likes to pull on the cast. 

“Enjoy it, you will miss her when she comes back to Korea, trust me.” Tiffany said winking. 

“Hi, I am still here you know.” Min said crossing her arms pouting making the other 2 laugh 

“Min-ah have you been taking care of yourself.” Tiffany said sternly but still discreetly in korean.

“Yes mam, I am. Don’t worry I have been very happy lately, I guess something to being free here.” Min answered back in korean making Sebastian pulled out his phone to let the girls talk.

“Good, you deserve it honey. Even though I hate being so far from you but at least I know you are being taken care of.” Tiffany said with a smile. 

“They both been nothing but sweet to me. I miss you so much Tiffany. But its getting late. And if I remember your schedule well. You are going to be late for practice.” Min said looking at her phone to check the time. “You are always looking out for us. Well it was nice to talk to you Sebastian. I have to go now.” Tiffany said finally in English making Sebastian look up at the screen. 

“Nice to talk to you too Tiffany. See ya.” He said smiling at Tiffany making her blush. 

“Uh huh I see you Tiff… I love you bye love.” Min said blowing her a kiss getting one back from Tiffany.

“Love you too, Bye honey.” She said cutely before turning off the screen.

   “So that’s Tiffany and Key for you. My 2 partner in crime. The 2 who has been there for me through my good and hard times.” Min said sadly laying back on the floor. 

“And do you want to talk about it?” Sebastian said looking at Min as he sees her eyes slightly glosses over.

“No not really. It’s my burden to carry, it hurts enough knowing I plagued those 2 with it.” Min said softly shaking her head.

“They care for you Princess, you didn’t plague then. Trust me it’s better to let others know sometimes then to keep it in. And if you ever want to talk about anything I am here.”

“You are really sweet Sebastian.” Min said smiling at him making him blush with a huge smile. “Oh god Sebby are you blushing?” She teased.

“God damn I hate compliments.” Sebastian said shaking his head before standing up making Min giggle. “Come on princess, it’s getting late. You should probably head back, it's already midnight.” Sebastian said pulling Min up to stand. 

“Thank you Sebastian.” Min said with a sad smile.

“For what” 

“For being my friend.” She said softly looking down to the ground as he leans down tilting her chin up lightly for her to look at him 

“I will always be your friend, don’t you ever forget that. I am not going anywhere, you can’t get rid of me that easy.” he said with a smirk making Min giggle. “Plus I can’t anyways, if the movie takes off we’re kind of stuck together for years.”  

“Promise?” She said lifting her pinky up to him making him shake his head. 

“Promise.” He said linking his pinky with hers before she beams him a bright smile even though tears wants to fall.
