A study of over 100 cycle schemes has revealed that old-fashioned schemes (i.e. just painting the road) will 'kill 10% more people than doing nothing and you get no uptake because it doesn't make people feel safe', whereas a scheme designed to modern standards will get 'between 20-60% increase in uptake and halve the number of deaths.'

Lyrics:
I see you calling
I didn't wanna leave you like that
It's five in the morning, yeah, yeah
A hundred on the dash
'Cause my wheels are rolling
Ain't taking my foot off the gas
And it only took the one night
To see the end of the line
Staring deep in your eyes, eyes
Dancing on the edge, 'bout to take it too far
It's messing with my head, how I mess with your heart
If you wake up in your bed, alone in the dark
I'm sorry, gotta leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
I'm so good at knowing
Of when to leave the party behind
Don't care if they notice, yeah, yeah, no
I'll just catch a ride
I'd rather be lonely, yeah
Than wrapped around your body too tight
Yeah, I'm the type to get naked
Won't give my heart up for breaking
'Cause I'm too gone to be stayin', staying' (dancing on)
Dancing on the edge, 'bout to take it too far
It's messing with my head, how I mess with your heart
If you wake up in your bed, alone in the dark
I'm sorry, gotta leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me
Ay, ay, leave before you love me

Here’s a poem I’d love to hear Chris Hemsworth recite.
The Thong of Thor by John Boardman In days of yore the great god Thor would ramp around creation. He'd drink a pint and slay a giant and save the Nordic nation, Or kill a Wyrm and watch it squirm and vainly try to fang him, Or lock up Loki in the pokey and on the noggin bang him. Once he did bawl through Thrudvang hall that on a trip he'd wander In a disguise from prying eyes in Midgard way out yonder. So all his slaves and carles and knaves packed up his goods and gear-o, And off he strode on Bifrost road, a perfect Aryan hero. In Midgard land he joined a band of hardy Viking ruffians. And off they sailed and rowed and bailed among the auks and puffians. Whene'er they'd reach a foreign beach they stopped to raid and plunder. Each Nordic brute got so much loot their longship near went under. But though they rolled in coins of gold they had one joy forsaken. For on each raid Thor's party made, no women could be taken. Each drab and queen fled from the scene when Viking sails were sighted. And Thor felt needs for certain deeds that had gone unrequited. Thor's brows were black as they rowed back to Oslo's rocky haven, Unto his crew he said, "Beshrew me for a Frankish craven, "If I don't wrench some tavern wench, or else may Frigga damn her!" Replied one voice, "You've got first choice. You have the biggest hammer." Into an inn this crew of sin disbarked upon their landing. Each tavern made was sore afraid of pirates of such standing. But golden coins warmed up their loins, and soon the ale ran free. Thor's motley crew poured down the brew and made an all-night spree, Thor's glances strayed unto a maid with hair as gold as grain, A lisp so shy, a downcast eye, and not a trace of brain. He swept her chams into his arms and to an upstairs bower, And did not cease or give her ease for three days and an hour. When he arose and donned his clothes she looked like one near death. Her limbs were weak, she could not speak, and scarcely gasped for breath. "You ought to know, before I go, I'm Thor," he bade adieu. "You 're thore!" said she. "Conthider me! I'm thorer; thir; than you!"

Chris Boardman to lead new walking and cycling body in England
The rush to give employees access to all the tools they’d need to work from home was a bit, well, sudden for many employers. But after everyone settled in, what quickly became apparent to many office-based teams is that employees could be productive and focused when not in the office—in many cases, even more so. Employers everywhere began to understand that remote work really works. Whether…

Emma Woodhouse is a congenial young lady who delights in meddling in other people’s affairs. She is perpetually trying to unite men and women who are utterly wrong for each other. Despite her interest in romance, Emma is clueless about her own feelings, and her relationship with gentle Mr. Knightly. Credits: TheMovieDb. Film Cast: Emma Woodhouse: Gwyneth Paltrow Harriet Smith: Toni Collette Mr. Elton: Alan Cumming Frank Churchill: Ewan McGregor Mr. Knightley: Jeremy Northam Mrs. Weston: Greta Scacchi Mrs. Elton: Juliet Stevenson Jane Fairfax: Polly Walker Miss Bates: Sophie Thompson Mr. Woodhouse: Denys Hawthorne Mr. Weston: James Cosmo Mrs. Bates: Phyllida Law Mrs. Goddard: Kathleen Byron Robert Martin: Edward Woodall John Knightley: Brian Capron Isabella: Karen Westwood Miss Martin: Rebecca Craig Mrs. Cole: Angela Down Mr. Cole: John Franklyn-Robbins Bates’ Maid: Ruth Jones Dancer (uncredited): Lee Boardman Film Crew: Set Decoration: Totty Whately Producer: Patrick Cassavetti Production Design: Michael Howells Director of Photography: Ian Wilson Casting: Mary Selway Novel: Jane Austen Screenplay: Douglas McGrath Casting: Sarah Trevis Art Direction: Joshua Meath-Baker Costume Design: Ruth Myers Editor: Lesley Walker Executive Producer: Bob Weinstein Executive Producer: Harvey Weinstein Producer: Steven Haft Executive Producer: Donna Gigliotti Art Direction: Sam Riley Thanks: Giorgio Armani Script Supervisor: Jean Bourne Makeup Department Head: Tina Earnshaw Assistant Costume Designer: Morgan Elliott Original Music Composer: Rachel Portman Hair Department Head: Simon Thompson Makeup Department Head: Susie Adams Property Master: Danny Euston Unit Publicist: Sara Keene Associate Producer: Donna Grey Sound Mixer: Chris Munro Still Photographer: David Appleby Production Coordinator: Fran Triefus Assistant Costume Designer: Sharon Long Dialogue Editor: Derek Holding Gaffer: Norman Smith Supervising Sound Editor: Colin Miller Location Manager: Bill Darby Assistant Editor: Jeremy Hume Sound Re-Recording Mixer: Paul Carr Sound Re-Recording Mixer: Robert Farr Choreographer: Sue Lefton Grip: Richard Broome Assistant Hairstylist: Kay Georgiou Assistant Makeup Artist: Sian Grigg Second Assistant Director: Alison Begg Third Assistant Director: Russell Channon Third Assistant Director: Caleb Menges First Assistant Director: Davina Nicholson Construction Manager: Andrew Golding Scenic Artist: Jason Line Scenic Artist: Stephen Scott Assistant Sound Editor: Geoff R. Not for any serious problems, but rather due to minor decisions that were made in the script. I expected to see more of Emma’s visit to Miss Bates, for example, after she is shamed into repenting her treatment of the silly woman. Other than that I enjoyed the movie well enough. The acting and the script were consistently good except for those moments I mentioned, and I would probably be willing to watch it again someday. Filipe Manuel Neto: **A futile and silly Emma to be taken seriously, but entertaining and has some good moments.** Jane Austen is one of the great writers in the English language and her work has been fertile ground for adaptations and reinterpretations in theatre, television and cinema. From trash to luxury, there’s no shortage of options, and each one stands out for one reason or another. This film was inspired by one of the author’s novels about a charismatic and dreamy young woman who takes pleasure in gathering acquaintances and friends, and playing matchmaker. The problem is that, deep down, she herself feels lonely and doesn’t really see a man capable of making h...

A Greener, More Accessible Future: The Promise of Active Travel in England
Tumblr media
Active Travel England will now help deliver walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure on all future large developments, enabling more people to make healthier, greener and cheaper travel choices. As of today (1 June 2023), Active Travel England is officially a statutory consultee on all planning applications for developments equal to or exceeding 150 housing units, 7,500 m2 of floorspace or an area of 5 hectares. This will see Active Travel England reviewing around 3,100 applications a year, equating to 60% of new homes. The new role will enable Active Travel England to help planning authorities in their work to implement good active travel design – for example, by ensuring developments include walking, wheeling and cycling connectivity to schools and local amenities. This will help improve public health, save people money and reduce harmful emissions. Building in active travel at design stage will also help to avoid big increases in vehicle traffic and reduce the need for costly upgrades to major road junctions or other corrective action in the future.

Chris Boardman with local boys in Chester. Photo by David Smith. Flickr.   Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman said: Active travel is essential to improving public health, reducing emissions and tackling the cost of living crisis. That’s why we’re working to ensure millions more people have the opportunity to walk, wheel or cycle from their doorstep to where they need to be. Designing activity back into our neighbourhoods and creating places where children have transport independence is achievable – it just needs smart planning. As a statutory consultee Active Travel England will work with planning authorities and developers to help them ensure new estates give people what they need to get fresh air and exercise, save money on petrol and help fight climate change.   The establishment of Active Travel England’s statutory consultee status follows a pilot project, which saw Active Travel England work with 30 local authorities to assess more than 60 developments over the 9 months up until November 2022. Feedback from a survey at the start of the pilot saw 80% of respondents agree Active Travel England should have a role in the planning system. While Active Travel England will be consulted on developments at and above its thresholds, it will not have any statutory powers to direct the outcome of planning applications. Active Travel England has been working with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to ensure its thresholds as a statutory consultee are set at an appropriate level. In addition to carrying out this new role, Active Travel England continues to invest to help councils deliver walking, wheeling and cycling schemes across the country and recently announced the 65 local authorities receiving a share of the latest Active Travel Fund.   Sources: THX News & Active Travel England.

Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Theaster Gates, from the "Chicago" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Chicago " premiered in September 2016 on PBS. Watch now on PBS and the PBS Video app: https://www.pbs.org/video/art-21-chic...
Theaster Gates first encountered creativity in the music of Black churches on his journey to becoming an urban planner, potter, and artist. Gates creates sculptures out of clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of the South Side into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community.
Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself.

After thinking about it some more I'm also down for the idea that Lance fell first and also fell harder.
Because with the stories of Jan during the late 90's you can just tell that he was crushing on Bjarne, maybe even Erik and Marco. No focus on Lance at all. Meanwhile Lance still remembers watching Jan during the TdF in '97, whereas Jan mentions wanting to talk to Chris Boardman in his auto bio.
I would also argue, again, that Lance fell so much harder than Jan did. You can't tell your doping wizard team doctor to put on a disguise and spy on your greatest rival and not have fallen harder. You can't fucking destroy everyone else like a crazy insane psycho, while handing the get-out-of-jail-free-card to the one guy that is your legit greatest competition, if you didn't fall harder.
And maybe that's why Lance is now overflowing with so much love for Jan. Why he wants to help him, and be there for him. Because he fell first, and he fell harder, and he can finally be open about it.
With Ullrichstrong, you know Jan fell first but Lance fell so so much harder.
Jan is all loving glances in the early 00s. He misses the chance at a second TdF win to be fair toward Lance. He comes to his rival's victory party and gives a speech in his not-so-great English. He says a win without Lance present is worth less.
Meanwhile Lance... goes fucking crashing down the stairs and takes everyone around him with him. He forces their team doctor to spy on Jan. He obsessively trolls the internet for any information on Jan. He talks with George about the state of Jan's physical fitness (aka his legs and his butt).
Jan is the fucking exception to every single one of his rules.
Where he would fuck up everyone else he hands the get-one-of-jail-free card to the one guy that could possibly beat him.
As far as Lance is concerned everyone else is a pretender, only Jan counts. Jan, Jan and Jan.
Jan is the one that gave a speech in front of everyone in his not-so-great English, still having Lance tear up to this day. Jan is the only one that made Lance get up early, that put the fear of god in him.
Jan may have fallen first but Lance fell way harder.
