thoughts on sound design and Divinity in ultrakill

#listening to things like #the sounds the virtues and their heavenly beam attacks make #or the hum of gabriel's light weapons #it's not the sound of an angelic choir. it's warbly and distorted and inorganic #almost like a synthesized imitation of more traditionally heavenly sound #and i don't remember if i've talked about it here. but that ties into the mechanical nature of heaven and its heirarchy #reading what the game has to say about gabriel. the wording very Very badly wants you to think of gabriel as a machine #as a weapon #the way the terminal talks about him and the way the council does #it's dehumanizing commodification #and that brings to mind the contrast the game sets up between angels and machines #because angels are counterpart to Robots in ultrakill's story. not demons #the game sets up conflict between Heaven and Earth. with hell just serving as a backdrop #and that shows in the way the game handles angels and machines #where the structure of heaven's forces is rigid and the sound of divinity is a synthetic growl #looking at ultrakill's scripture on machines on the other hand. you'll find that every robot described in the terminal has a story involving #some kind of deviation from originally manufactured purpose. form. design. aesthetic #they're really Wild Animals #they fight. they Live #they evolve and they mutate #they do whatever the hell they need to #and i find that fascinating. perfect contrast #again my fingers are crossed tighter than hell that the Violence layer plays with that animalism #or that machinekind is at least explored further somewhere else in the story #either way. can't wait #no one does hell like hakita #make it this far down i'd love to hear what you think

3:35 to 4:10 in Levitate is so unbelievably comforting to me. In the best (and worst) way possible, it truly does feel like levitation.

The best way I can describe it is laying in someone's arms, lover, friend, foe or family, and simply basking in the comfort they give you. One arm wrapped, gently, around your middle, fingers tracing invisible patterns on your clothes, and the other hand softly combing through your hair as they whisper soft nothings in your ear. You're on the brink of sleep; half listening to their words and half being drawn in by the comfort of the drowsy void.

It's a warm hug that you never want to leave. (catch me replaying that part over and over)

#and then the breakdown #(since you all seem to like it so much when I get depressive with these I'll pull out my thoughts)#my mind always conjurs two things with the breakdown; death and mourning #when you think of levitation you either think of magic or death; the soul rising up to Heaven #the choir that joins Vessel singing are angels as he tries to comfort the person dying in his arms.#the breakdown is when he finally realises that's it; they're gone #he brought down Heaven like an ancient bygone for them knowing their own wings wouldn't find it #but by God he'll scream and cry and year himself inside out over it even if he told himself that he would accept it #('death' can either be interpreted as actual death or the act of leaving someone for good ->#those last few seconds of calm is having one last moment with them before they rise to where he can't reach them)#if you can't tell I'm in my sad yearning hours because I didn't sleep last night and I'm stressed about trying to get tickets but we ball 💪#sleep token #st #sleep token analysis #levitate (song)#levitate #sundowning #mel's rambles

as much as I love the Messiah, there are definitely parts which are a bit boring and Händel has just stretched it out for too long and repeats the phrase over and over and idk if this was supposed to be an opportunity for vocalists to demonstrate their virtuosity and add embellishments so typical of the baroque. but it's boring. move on we get the point. and then. then. we get to "...the chastisement, the chastisement of our peace was upon him" and it's simply the most beautiful harmony and the way the voices echo each other and weave together, oh, how wonderful those few bars are ! but Händel just moves past it. we don't get to bask in it, or savour it. it's like the clouds part allowing but for the briefest moment the sun to shine through, and then we're back to wading through numerous repetitions of "and with his stripes we are healèd" urgh

#the cape town baroque orchestra recently did a recreation of the 1742 premier of the Messiah #the first version before händel tinkered with it and added bits and rescored passages and decided to add oboes to the ensemble etc #and performed with a small ensemble. it was such a clear and clean performance #I get that having a huge choir and full symphony orchestra makes it very majestic and glorious #but yeah idk sometimes excess is worse. less is more : more intimate and controlled and delicate #anyway evidently I've been having thoughts about the work again #heaven knows if I can save enough money I'm going back to uni to do a translation of the Messiah that still fits the music

swans has me saying crazy shit like yeah this song rlly picks up at the 18 minute mark and wow i love the way the glockenspiel comes in around the 37 minute mark woahhh

#idk i’ve been thinking abt this song since i heard it it’s rlly interesting #plus there’s this angelic choir that makes it sound like ur being pulled up to heaven #which is interrupted by these rlly harsh sounding keys as if the angels decided to throw u back down to earth #also there’s some cool plucky bass moments #which given the sound collage-ness of the song is super interesting bc gira began learning music on bass iirc #also i luvvv the contrast between the glockenspiel and the bass #there’s this high fluttering sound against this low smooth sound #like the unreal and the real or heaven and earth #or birth and death #idk if this is the final swans album but if it is that’s a hell of a note to end off on #it’s tacitly morbid #and i like it a lot #also ik nobody cares but i luv when music makes me think like this #and there’s much to think about
