Let me bless you with this 1985 preliminary script for Top Gun, specifically the bar scene where Goose introduces Evan “Maverick” Mitchell to Iceman and Slider.

in the original top gun script, viper outright blamed maverick for goose's death.

there are two scripts for top gun i can find online. one of them is from april 4, 1985, written by chip proser. the other is from june 1, 1985, written by warren skaaren.

there are many insane differences (for example, goose was originally supposed to be cougar's rio, and merlin was originally supposed to be maverick's rio. goose wasn't pleased at being assigned maverick as a pilot).

but here is the one that punched the hardest in the gut.

on the left is the original draft. the one on the right, that's the revised second draft, and what we see in the film.

the highlight is mine.

this is just... so crazy to me, and so different from the viper that ended up making it to the screen. my jaw DROPPED.

Saphir (90s Anime): Analysis of the guy who was right about everything

Hi. This character analysis was a request by @dutiifully​ after doing on of Prince Demande which you can read here.

Saphir was a straightforward yet complex character in his own right as he was the lone voice of reason in the Black Moon Clan who everyone ignored until it was too late.

Saphir’s life begins on Nemesis where he is the very, very distant descendant of the terrorist Doom Phantom as mentioned in Demande’s analysis though a lot of the knowledge behind their long lost ancestor as well as their connection to him is lost to history. He is the younger brother of Prince Demande making him also a prince though unlike him, he has no magic powers whatsoever. Instead, he was gifted with a genius level IQ which he put towards studying various sciences particularly the amalgamation of magic and robotics. Nemesis was implied to be impoverished, had a harsh environment and was struck with a plethora of problems which included disease, famine and more, so being able to grow anything on the planet was extremely hard and rare. Despite this, Saphir’s relationship with his older brother was very loving though and they tried to find joy in life where they could together though it was not without disagreements even when they were young boys. Demande coveted the proserous Earth and blamed the royal family of Crystal Tokyo for the Black Moon Clan’s misfortune whereas Saphir did not waste his time looking to blame anyone and turned attention towards making Nemesis better. His brotherly bond with Demande was also very unusual because unlike most situations, he the younger brother was often the one protecting and looking out for Demande the older brother making Saphir the more mature and responsible one.

It is not known for sure, but it is very likely that their parents the king and queen died from the harsh living conditions on Nemesis as they are absent from the series. It is also very likely that upong their death, Doom Phantom under the disguise of Wiseman took advantage of Demande’s grief knowing that as the heir, everyone would follow him. Saphir on the other hand saw through the Wiseman’s false support and was suspicious of him having ulterior motives from the beginning, but the majority of the Black Moon Clan, Prince Demande included and leading the way, would not listen. Reluctantly, he joined them, but only because he did not want to leave Demande alone with Wiseman. Saphir was put to work by being in charge of their technology, research and the production of weapons like the droids. He never had any real vendetta towards Earth or the royal family, and regretted the ruination of both. Despite this and how strained his relationship with Demande had become, he never gave up on him. It also noted that he never became a true member of the Wiseman’s cause hence why he is the only one who doesn’t wear the black crystal earrings. It can be theorized that around this time, Petz got to know and fall in love with him and he did reciprocate these feelings, but at the time, looking out for Demande was his priority. Caraveras, one of Petz’s younger sisters, is the only one who was aware of the two of them having feelings for each other. It is unknown if this caused Petz to go through a phase where she hated men. It is also possible that he got along well with the other Specter Sisters too and they had good in them. Saphir didn’t like anyone else in the group though as the other were either malicious or just narcissistic. All the same, he did not actually wish ill on them and warned them not to trust Wisemen too hence why he truly did pity Esmeraude when she died.

After spying on Wiseman once, all his suspicions about Wiseman using the Black Moon Clan are confirmed and he tries to sabotage him by stealing the chip needed to power their main warship which also their palace and it is very likely that he intended to do even more damage if he had not been caught in the act. Wiseman threatens him in an attempt to return the chip, but as always, Saphir fearlessly defies to which Wiseman responds by following through with his threat, but Saphir miraculously lives and is saved by the Specter Sisters. As Saphir takes the time to heal, he and Petz take this chance to finally be their genuine selves around each other and while it is never actually spoken in words, they have made their feelings for each other very clear.

However, Saphir just cannot give up on his brother and still has to save him while promising to return to her. Despite knowing that he would most likely not live to return, Petz lets him go because she understands how he feels. In the end, he did manage to catch up with Demande and attempted to tell him the truth during a fight, but tragically, he was killed in the heat of battle before he could say everything. Upon his death, Saphir’s black moon crescent was now missing as the last bit of dark energy in his soul left most likely due to him having the courage to do the right thing. Despite his death, Saphir’s selflessness finally brought Demande to his senses and got a chance to break free of Wiseman’s control and save his own soul at least.

Sometime after Doom Phantom was finally defeated by Sailor Moon, as Neo-Queen Serenity, and Chibi-Usa, as Princess Lady Serenity, the people of the Black Moon Clan finally let go of their hate towards Earth, left the solar system in search of a better planet and followed through with Second-Born-Prince Saphir’s way which was concentrate on how to make their own lives better most likely with the science and technology he left them.

When looking at Saphir’s life and personality, he was not only the voice of reason, but also the most tragic member of the Black Moon Clan. He was never actually evil and really did care about people. And even though he was the second born prince, he still took his duty seriously and was highly motivated by it to make his kingdom better. He was not just gifted with genius, but also with a kind heart and he was surprisingly mature. In all the ways that matter, Saphir was more fit to become king that Demande was. Unfortunately, not enough people sided with him and in a society that valued tradition more than reason, they followed Prince Demande’s way (which was actually, Doom Phantom’s) even if did not actually solve their problems.

It also could not have been easy for him being surrounded by so many people who blinded either by hate or their own selfishness. Yet he never got broken by all of the darkness around him. He kept working towards his goal which was to help the Black Moon Clan and make his brother see the light. What makes all this all the more tragic is that unlike all the other members who had delusions of grandeur, he was taking real steps towards building a solid life for himself. He continued doing his true duty as a prince and scientist, and was even on his way to having a real romantic relationship with Petz, but he could not stand up to Doom Phantom alone. Despite dying, he at least did so with the most dignity as he never fell for Wiseman’s manipulative ways and a good man until the end.

Prince Saphir’s story is one we see too often real life where the one voice of reason in the angry mob gets consistently silenced until it is too late. What we can take from his story is the importance of listening to those who are telling us the truth rather than popular opinion or else we will live to regret it.

A 15-page storyboard that covers the events of part of the proposed 1983 Hollywood adaption of Mobile Suit Gundam, including opening scene, corresponding roughly with pages 1-9 of the script’s first draft and incorporating elements of Syd Mead’s Gouache rendering of the scene. Two pages of Zak sketches follow the storyboards, possibly by Mead, though this is unconfirmed and there is no signature. Writer/director Chip Proser suggested that it may have been created for the benefit of showing contacts at Bandai.
