The other times the Kodansha TV picture books more simplified tellings of the 90's anime's stories actually made improvements.
1. The final four episodes of the Nemesis arc in R are condensced and combined into a single book, and while that itself makes the whole thing way less epic, the book does better with Dimande's death than the anime did. Usagi pleads with Black Lady, Saphir, and Dimande, who are on the scene with Wiseman attacking them in present day Earth, and when Saphir and Dimande start to realize they're being used, Wiseman cheap shots them both, killing them on the spot. In having both brothers get the Saphir treatment, Dimande doesn't get his dramatic deathbed repentence, and good riddance.
2. The book adapting the 21st and 22nd episodes of S has Super Sailor Moon destroying Eudial with the Holy Grail. A significantly better way for her to go out than a car wreck due to snails in the car.
3. In the final S book, Mistress 9 breaks the Holy Grail and uses its power to summon Master Pharaoh 90 to Earth, and rather than taking his sweet time actually making impact, he shows up right there and then, torturing the Sailor Senshi with his power and directly attacking Sailor Moon when she tries to stand against him. Moreover, when Sailor Saturn appears, the original conclusion of only her taking a self-destructing Pharaoh 90 back to the Tau Galaxy and being blown up along with him, with Messiah Usagi restoring everything and reincarnating Hotaru as an infant afterwards, is restored. And the story stops right at Usagi doing her Messiah thing, so we're spared the petulant bullshit from Uranus and Neptune that followed.

So the reason I brought up DIC making Saphir have a crush on Esmeraude is because it ties into why I think Petz got dumped in the original, and I don’t think it was because of Wiseman…
See that change was meant to cover up Saphir commiserating with Esmeraude in the original, where after he goes on a long monologue about the dangers of a woman’s jealousy he then reveals (with quite a dark smirk on his face I might add!) that he understands how she feels because he also hates Sailor Moon! (presumably out of jealousy like Esmeraude since he was comparing himself to her)
Why would this piece of dialogue need to be censored/changed in the first place? Well I think it was yet another example of DIC’s desperate attempt to straightwash all over the place and the original was obviously meant to suggest, if not outright state, that Saphir has romantic feelings for Demande. (It makes sense when you realize this was the first season Ikuhara directed and if you know the man’s history in anime he loves inserting random incest into everything, even the anime original Ail & En could technically be considered an incest ship, yet that wasn’t censored by DIC unlike Demande/Saphir for obvious reasons 🙄 I love the old dub and have major nostalgia for it too but you can’t say it’s one objective flaw was it’s homophobia being off the charts!)
There was another scene that just completely got the cutting room floor in the DIC dub that also suggested feelings between the two brothers. I don’t know how to post gifs in asks but it’s in episode 86, the episode where Chibi-Usa becomes Black Lady, Demande and Saphir are talking and during the convo Demande kinda flirtatiously, slowly brushes Saphir’s hair out of his eyes with his knuckles/fingers and Saphir’s whispering gently and giving him bedroom eyes back. (Do you know which scene I’m talking about? There should be gifs of it floating around, all I can say is that scene definitely didn’t look platonic or like simple brotherly affection, and DIC apparently felt the same way considering how they immediately exorcised it lol)
It doesn’t stop there though, further supplemental materials only ever released in Japan further confirm their canonicity. In the Sailor Moon R Official Memorial Guidebook Saphir’s profile describes him as “Always only thinking about his brother, Demande was the only person he loved, (and they use the term “Aisatsu” for love which is a congugation of “Ashiteru” and from what I know of my Japanese that’s only used in reference to the most serious deceleration of romantic love correct?) “Petz loved him but he could only see Demande.” as well as “Strict to others and himself but sweet to his brother.”Then there’s the various Drama CDs that were never released outside of Japan, one of them features the Ayakashi Sisters and Petz outright states that “she’ll never fall for a brocon again!” Pretty much directly confirming that Saphir was the man who broke Petz’s heart and caused her to hate all men and he did so because of his feelings for Demande (though this is also subtly implied during the episode when they meet up and Petz says somewhat bitterly during their reunion “There you go again, only ever caring about Prince Demande…”)
So uh yeah the TLDR of it all is that it’spretty much implied that the reason Saphir dumped Petz was because he always had secret feelings for Demande that he couldn’t get over and Petz apparently knew this, it’s like this weird af love triangle Ikuhara made up with Petz > Saphir > Demande (love square? Since Neo-Queen Serenity is also in the mix though she doesn’t know it and couldn’t care less lol - I would put Esmeraude in there too but if you watch her episodes it seems obvious her feelings for Demande aren’t as serious as Saphir’s and she seems mostly into him just for his status and power)
No way someone finally engages with my occasional my Sailor Moon content just to push an incest crush headcanon ☠️☠️☠️ What is my luck. I mean you do you for sure but I’ll break down my thoughts.
I’ve always seen Sapphire’s love for Demande as a younger brother worshipping an older one, mixed together with two facts. A. Demande is a prince/the heir/whatever so Sapphire was raised mixing normal brotherly adoration with knowing by royal rules that he is supposed to worship his brother in a royal subversive way too kinda. And B. They are, in a lot a ways, all they have. No parents, no sibling. It’s just them. Against time and space and with courtiers and Wiseman. The only person they truly can trust is each other. So yes, for Sapphire, he was always geing to choose his only brother, his prince, his only blood, over a girl. That’s not romantic.
And now Demande is straying from their mission, is getting obsessed with the rival queen aka Sailor Moon. That’s dangerous. What if Demande goes off path? What would Wiseman do? What would it do to their mission, their plans for Crystal Tokyo? I always took it as he hates her because she’s a temptation to Demande that represents nothing but ruin for everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve.
Why did DiC change the lines? Because DiC is stupid? Because they wanted to do a bit of a love triangle? This is the same company that took Jadeite meeting a disguised Usagi and feeling suspicious around her and made it Jedeite crushing on Serena. DiC did that stuff a. Ton. (But yes. They were very homophobic.)
And I think it is so important that Demande and Sapphire’s brotherly love was what kept them… human deep down. It was their devotion to each other. And it was brotherly. Idk. Just how I view them. But I’m also a big Usagi/Demande shipper so I have very little interest in thinking about Demande with other people or introducing other people with unrequited crushes when Emerald is a handful and a half.
