Actually so happy to have found my tribe's language. At least one of them. This is my first step to reconnecting: learning the language. I found an app dedicated to teaching it I'm gonna try it out.

Tried translating the first few pages of Golden Kamuy into Chinuk Wawa; pages with illustrated gore below the cut
I’m a complete beginner; this was only possible with copious amounts of looking up words and grammar in the dictionary. I have no doubt I have made numerous errors. If anyone more experienced with the language wants to correct me, please please do so!!

LMAO, pardon the double-posting about the subject, but I made a post about customizing a Chinuk Wawa keyboard & Tumblr ate it because of all the links. You can check it out here: [AKA, in the replies of this post, I'll add a link!]
#Textual.#chinuk wawa#Silly website doesn't like it when people try to share stuff outside of it. Anyway.

LRB: I was reading the Chinuk Wawa dictionary years ago as part of a personal project and distinctly remember a word in there which was used to gloss the (outmoded, anthropological) term "berdache", something I'd best get across in english orthography from memory as "pi-klooxman" (the actual orthography is different but i'm bad at IPA) - nearest etymological english equivalent something like the modern "femme" or maybe the 2010s "demigirl" - anyway, this was a term which expressed gender-variance, seemed to specifically imply transfemme-adjacent gender-variance, and which the primary sources swore up and down was not an existing concept in local ndn society, while also explicitly naming a distant relative called "Nancy Jack" or "Jack Nancy" as an example. Cognitive dissonance babey

Not to downplay the achievement of the Chinuk Wawa Game of Thrones fanfiction but like Chinuk Wawa is one of the most syntactically tame Native American languages in comparison to the others. I've seen drill rap music in Kichwa so you need more to impress me.

It’s very weird when you find a cognate between languages that really shouldn’t be related.
Chinuk Wawa: Has the word “hyak,” which means “to hasten.” (Trade language of the West during the 1800s between many Native American languages, English, and French.)
Japanese: Has the word “hayaku” which means “quickly.”
