dekker: mouflon
gertrude: great tit
leitner: domestic cat (persian)
manuela: gray long-eared bat
rayner: olm
salesa: sea otter
simon: dodo
elaboration below !
jon: common raven
this was a choice i made before i even finished listening to the podcast back in 2020. jon's 1000% a bird to me, and the curious nature of corvids works well here. plus, i think a bird so universally ominous as a raven works perfectly as a horror protag :P i used to draw raven!jon with a couple troodon traits, mostly just cus it was fun, but i wanted to make my designs more grounded for this iteration. made them plantigrade, didn't get silly with body styles like i have with mp100 designs.
martin: tan jumping spider
if you've been here for a while you'll know that my furry martin has gone through about two million iterations. he started off as a european pine marten, to bold jumping spider, to chinese pangolin, to nine-banded armadillo, finally to nurse shark.
out of all of these the spider and the shark are my favorites. i wanted to go back to the jumping spider though- the design is really fun and i wasn't able to get the expressions right, but i'm more confident in my skills now and i'm having fun with the design. i may revisit nurse shark at some point. i switched from bold to tan jumper- i originally chose bold just cus they're my favorite jumper, but their stark black/white and iridescent aqua coloration just doens't work for martin. so, the tan jumper!
sasha: southern flannel moth
another old choice. species chosen because of a friend's fic, pharos by right (another i'm planning to reread now that i'm dipping my toes back into tma..)! southern flannel moths are poofy and orange, and their caterpillars are those super painful teddybear ones. i really like the design.
not!sasha: red postman
wanted to have her be another lepidopteran, and with all the many examples of mimicry among the group i thought red postman was a fun choice. doesn't look anything like a southern flannel moth, but that's sort of the point.
tim: jackson's chameleon
yet another choice from the oldtimes- most of the main characters are, i've mostly switched around the more secondary chars. first suggested, i believe, by @/ofdreamsanddoodles. i think there's something very fun about chameleons being basically a living mood ring & tim's Descent s1-3 showing physcially not just through the worm scars but through like, constant stress coloration during s3.
melanie: eastern copperhead
one of my favorite choices. i have a young copperhead specimen named after her. this one is quite vibes-based, but i do really like the copperhead as a viper that is not deadly. and i'm always a sucker for the "animal perceived as scary and violent that in actuality only strikes when under extreme stress" thing in furry assignments.
georgie: triceratops horridus
another favorite choice. visually, i really like how this works out, and trikes as a social and protective animal works well. she's literally got a shield on her face. horridus was chosen because i like the shape of the head and horns better than prorsus.
basira: domestic cat (calico shorthair)
got a little cat/dog thing going on for dasira. i like the inversion of the usual cat/dog dynamic with their unhealthy devotion instead, and visually it just works very well for them both.
daisy: domestic dog (german shepherd)
yeah i know this one's an exceedingly obvious choice.
elias: barn owl. jonah: eurasian eagle owl.
it's the institute logo! it's him! barn owl for elias specifically because of its very sleek look, designing him went fantastically. also, i can make the eagle owl's face disk work as a mimicry of ben meredith's muttonchops, which i think is a fun design bit to give to magnus.
gerry: domestic dog (black doberman)
certified gerryguy @/gerrydelano's choice. to quote a discord message from 3 years ago (sorry ron): "i feel like.........my INSTINCT is some kind of canine because like. the whole symbolism thing about being either an obedient or rabid dog. something something muzzled all your life. being a dangerous figure if people only see the silhouette but you just want scritches and nobody'll get close enough to you." black dog symbolism + breed which has ears cropped and tail docked, unecessarily molded for a Purpose which the dog has no say in
annabelle: white-booted racket-tail
sort of my original choice- she used to be part white-booted racket-tail, part anna's hummingbird. kept with the racket-tail cus it's fun and very cute. i've had a couple people express surprise that she wasn't a spider, but i think that's way too obvious. hummingbirds, though- they steal the webs of spiders to use as material to make their nests, but can sometimes become trapped in the webs and eaten by the spiders themselves. which is probably the metaphor-via-fursona-assignment i'm most proud of in this whole list
jane: cabbage white
the cabbage white is a butterfly whose caterpillars are routinely parasitized by the parasitoid wasp the white butterfly parasite. in case you're not familiar, parasitoid wasps lay their eggs on (usually) caterpillars, which hatch on the still-living caterpillar, devouring it from the inside before eventually emerging from the consumed husk of the host. also, i really liked the image of parasitoid wasp larvae emerging from an adult butterfly, rather than a caterpillar.
michael: spiny softshell turtle
for michael and helen, i wanted to choose animals which were, in some way, their own home. turtle is an obvious choice- and spiny softshells are a favorite of mine, and sufficiently strange-looking.
helen: common hermit crab
see previous entry. also please google "hermit crab without shell"
oliver: black vulture
bit of an obvious choice, but i adore vultures so i had to. black vulture chosen because i think the monochrome color scheme + straighter face work better than a turkey vulture for him
peter: risso's dolphin
i really like the idea of a cetacean for peter and the lukases as a whole, a famously social animal for the seemingly contradictory nature of this lonely-but-huge family, plus with so many cetaceans being endangered getting that lonely angle (risso's specifically are not, though, as peter is lonely through his own choice, not by circumstance).
mike: caelestiventus hanseni
it's a dimorphodont. he feels like a pterosaur to me, and i like the idea of a vast avatar as a usually short-flying arboreal species, for the unnaturality/contrast of it.
jude: black kite
black kites are one of the species of kites known to intentionally spread fires by picking up burning sticks to flush out prey.
agnes: ???
the only one i'm still undecided on. will update.
nikola: stealing major's carousel horse
i can't top that
jared: american dog tick
great choice from @/magnusarchivememes. Takes Your Blood And Gets So Big
breekon&hope: Hog and/or Bear. you get no more information
vaguely russian animals that are large and imposing but remain somewhat generic. which is the hog and which is the bear is not consistent.
dekker: mouflon
dekker has very much mammal vibes to me. the mouflon is a neat species of wild sheep. i think the noble, imposing but kind image of the ram works well for dekker as that sort of true-good hero figure, and mouflons in particular are very nice looking with good shapes. the statement giver in distant cousin describes dekker as "though he was slightly shorter than I was, it seemed like he towered over me." which i think this sheep works well with.
gertrude: great tit
i wanted all the main eye avatars as birds, just like how i give them all glasses. just a fun little treat for me. great tit was chosen for gertrude as a kind of classic british bird, and as tits in general are VERY fiesty despite their round and adorable appearance. i really like this image of a great tit posing with a dead mouse like it's a hunter with a trophy deer. the cheek markings also work really well to bring to mind the image of old person jowls.
leitner: domestic cat (persian)
vibes. also i like the idea of him as a spoiled domestic animal. if i remember correctly, this was also @/ofdreamsanddoodles' suggestion
manuela: gray long-eared bat
she's a bat. what's to say. WELL actually okay there's the perception of bats as blind but actually having quite good vision which i think meshes in a fun way with the dark, and the way manuela does her sciency stuff.
rayner: olm
i mean, yeah
salesa: sea otter
largely design-oriented, suitably scruffy. ocean animal with strong social bonds, it was a slam dunk soon as i thought of it.
simon: dodo
how couldn't i, come on.

Hi! This is my Cetacean side blog 🐬
I am a Cetacean clado flux (physical) Therian, i mainly fluctuate between a Striped dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, chinese white dolphin, Orca, aswell as a humpback whale.
I call myself a Transspecies dolphin.
I am strongly against cetaceans in captivity and its a huge trigger for me to see fellow cetaceans in captivity so please keep that in mind when interacting.
I also believe in past lifes and that in one of mine i used to be a captive orca, wich still influences me negatively. I still feel like a captive cetacean.

I was thinking about America with eagle wings and it turned into an entire AU where the nations have features of their national animals. Animals and headcanons under the cut
Animals (a lot of them have multiple, so I just picked one):
America: Bald Eagle
Britain: Lion
France: Gallic rooster
Russia: Eurasian brown bear
China: Chinese dragon
Canada: North American beaver
Germany: Bundesadler eagle
Prussia: Black eagle
Italy: Italian wolf
Japan: Green pheasant
Lithuania: White stork
Latvia: White wagtail
Estonia: Wolf
Iceland: Gyrfalcon
Norway: White-throated dipper
Denmark: Mute swan
Sweden: Eurasian elk/moose
Finland: Whooper swan
Scotland: Unicorn
Wales: Dragon
Ireland: Red deer
Liechtenstein: Common kestrel
Spain: Bull
Portugal: Iberian wolf
Seychelles: Striped dolphin
Austria: Barn swallow
Hungary: Turul
Turkey: Gray wolf
Greece: Phoenix
Poland: White-tailed eagle
Romania: Lynx
Czechia: Double-tailed lion
Slovakia: Brown bear
Ukraine: Common nightingale
Belarus: European bison
Netherlands: Lion
Belgium: Lion
Luxembourg: Lion
I couldn't find a national animal for Switzerland.
Headcanons:
All of the bird nations have walked straight into a glass door/window at least once.
Wales can breathe fire.
China can control rain and water.
France calls Britain Chaton.
Britain calls France Cock.
Two of the scars on Lithuania's back are where his wings used to be.
Latvia has gotten in trouble with Russia a few times for forgetting that he's the only one who can fly and putting things up where no one else can reach them.
Most of the nations know how to sew so they can alter their clothes to accommodate their animal features.
Britain has, on occasion, locked eyes with France while eating chicken.
There is at least one video on YouTube titled Nations VS Glass that's just the consequences of the bird nations not being able to see glass.
Romano can say he doesn't care when you say something nice about him, but he can't hide his tail wagging.
It's a good idea to be careful around Veneziano when he's happy/excited unless you want to accidentally be beaten half to death with his tail. Something Germany and Japan found out the hard way.
Just like house cats, the lions will occasionally often knock things off tables/countertops.
Poland likes to call Lithuania Pretty Bird. Lithuania blushes bright red every time.
Spain is a bull. Of course he has a septum piercing.
France owns a laser pointer specifically for messing with Britain.
Romano used to pull Spain's tail whenever he wanted attention.
Britain's brothers pull his tail a lot just to get on his nerves.

All animal species (and a couple algae) that have kept the same scientific name since Linnaeus
The first work of taxonomy that is considered as having any scientific authority for animal species was the 10th edition of Linnaeus' Systema Naturae, published in 1758. (Also a book on spiders called Aranei Suecici, published one year before.) That's the foundational text of the binominal system of nomenclature of species still in use today. Since then most of Linnaeus' original species (4379 species, of which 185 mammals, 554 birds, 217 "amphibians" (including reptiles and cartilaginous fish), 379 fishes, 2104 "insects" (including various arthropods, of which 664 are beetles and 543 are moths & butterflies crammed into only 3 genera), and 940 "worms" (including basically all other invertebrates, and even some protists and algae)) have been dismembered, renamed, or at least moved to different genera (e.g. the house sparrow went from Fringilla domestica to Passer domesticus).
Here is a list of all of Linnaeus' original species from 1758 that still retain their original name. I believe they are 484 in total.

Your lili posts have me thinking a lot about Jade and her similarities with Rose. Both come from countries ravaged by war and colonialism and this shapes their childhood- and yet DC ignores it despite the potential for a poignant and meaningful story there.
Rose grew up in a determent camp. Jade’s father was a french colonialist and she was later sold into slavery(and when she escaped she was trained by a chinese freedom fighter). These are interesting stories not only in the way they uniquely affect cambodian and viet women but in the sense they just… are compelling?? Jade works well with Roy and her daughter DOES make her more interesting but her dynamic with her daughter and with MEN has an extra layer there that they just don’t care about.
Rose HAS this unqiue and formative trauma that’s never discussed. Despite who her mother was or the things she saw she is aggressive to other women constantly, she is centrally relevant for her daddy issues, which yea are important, are not the only thing to explore there! I hope this makes sense and I’m not just very tired
This does make sense!
That's a really interesting parallel - I didn't know about Jade's backstory! I assumed the man she was talking with was a fellow assassin and not someone who had such a formative impact on her life.
Yeah, I think it's very telling that DC does a relatively good job with Mia Dearden as a trafficked white girl (and even that has some misses) but when a women of colour has trafficking in her backstory it's not fully explored or explained. Especially when women of colour are more at risk of human trafficking than white women, but don't receive the same attention/horror at their situations.
In way too many DC comics, human trafficking victims are a blur of undifferentiated nonwhite and/or female characters freed from the back of a van by our hero and never seen again, used to show just how evil an organisation or villain is. So yeah, that makes it especially galling that Jade's escape from slavery isn't factored into her relationship to men and her daughter.
Like Jade, Lili escapes slavery and tries to give her daughter the best life possible, and like her, she's erased from her daughter's personality and life.
Intergenerational trauma specific to Cambodia (which was already being discussed in academia in the 90s!!) and Vietnam is completely ignored. The way both have to deal with their own trauma and break cycles of abuse to raise their daughters is never acknowledged, while any way they act on past traumas is heavily punished. [Lili not wanting Rose to know about Slade to protect her leaving Rose unprepared for him/Jade reacting violently to having her daughter taken away from her being portrayed as her being crazed]
And yeah, the Rose who initially protects a woman from an abusive husband as a fourteen year old and has tea parties with Dolphin and Lian is suddenly turned into a sexist.
(Rose not hearing out Jade about Lian because of her own trauma and need to protect a little girl from the assassin parent coming on the scene was so PAINFUL and I am curious if they've interacted since)
Rose's valid and actually nuanced debate with Cassie about morality, the nature of redemption, etc, is portrayed as a catfight. It devalues both characters' arguments, but the racism of making Rose an oversexed Asian girl who says sexist things is much more egregious.
I also hate any Rose line along the lines of "I was raised in a brothel" because it never leads to a nuanced discussion of sex work but always means "sex isn't a big deal", which (a) I don't think anyone on any side of arguments about sex work thinks and (b) frankly would not be said if her mother and her were white. And of course, I don't even need to mention how horrible the Tim scene was for her character and background.
Similarly, you're so right that Rose's problems with authority are often seen as "daddy issues" which is so offensive because firstly, responding to abuse by a parent by struggling with authority is a genuine trauma response many people have. Secondly, she grew up for five years in an environment where soldiers abused refugees, and then she spent the next nine at risk of police abusing her mother and the other women because they were sex workers, and majority women of colour. She has really valid reasons not to trust people in authority, and when Eddie's being manipulated by the Doom Patrol, she's the first member of the Teen Titans to call bullshit and protect him. It's especially interesting because the manipulated members of the Doom Patrol are strongly disability coded and Caulder mimics ableist rhetoric to control them. Eddie, coded as newly disabled and white, is not used to having someone use bigotry to manipulate and control him, and I find it so interesting that Rose as a woman of colour is the first to worry about him. In the right balance, her distrust of authority is useful and insightful.
Tumblr media
I honestly don't know enough Jade yet to have similar insight into her but I want to read more!
Overall, the Asian women in DC are so frequently screwed over, and I really think, being white myself, that white people need to stop discussing treatment of women in comics as shorthand for treatment of white women. For example, it might be overdone to focus on a white woman being a mother, but Asian women like Lili, Jade, Talia and more have their motherhood devalued and relationship to their children discounted. There's way too much reading material out there about treatment of Asian women in media to not work towards intersectional discussions of characters like Rose and Jade. Trying to untangle these characters from DC's racism/sexism and discussing them in their historical and cultural contexts is really rewarding and interesting.

This took awhile to make because I had trouble drawing her.
Noriko Tachibana (橘典子 Tachibana Noriko), was a secondary ally during "Diamond is Unbreakable". Noriko was born in Morioh, Japan with Irish-American traits from her mother Medea and Japanese traits from her father Keiji, making her a Hafu.
She was a innocent and adorable young girl who attends an Elementary School and grew up without knowing of her mother's past sins in "Stardust Crusaders", it wasn't until Yoshikage Kira began to terrorize her family and all of Morioh that she began to see that not everything in the world is pure and beautiful, also doesn't help that her mother's a beautiful woman with only one human hand.
It is later revealed that Noriko is a natural born Stand user due to seeing her mother's Stand since infancy, albeit still dormant.
She later becomes a secondary protagonist during the events of "Stone Ocean", she is now a teenager who attends High School and dreams on becoming an idol.
But those dreams were dashed when Enrico Pucci, an ally of her mother's former master DIO, kidnaps and takes her to the Green Dolphin Street Prison in Florida, USA, under the false claim that she committed arson, in hopes of smoking out Medea and using her daughter as leverage for "betraying god".
It was there that Noriko's Stand finally manifests, now named "Little Talks", and now has to join forces with the Joestar group in hopes of stopping Pucci's plans and reuniting with her mother.
Noriko will later reappear in the new universe as an alternate version of herself named "Sakura Tachibana", she is portrayed as a Japanese tourist who is visiting Florida for the holidays with her parents.

~Appearance~
In "Diamond is Unbreakable", Noriko is a 91 cm (3 ft 0 in) tall young girl, who is shown to share both Western and Japanese traits due to being born a Hafu. She has her father's dark brown hair tied into short pigtails with teal hair ties, a round face, thin pale-orange lips, pale skin, a short stature due to her young age, and her mother's fern green eyes. She also shown to be wearing a white and rain-forest green sailor uniform with a magenta colored necktie, white ankle socks, and brown loafers.
In the first chapter of "Stone Ocean", Noriko had noticeably aged and has grown in size, now being 154 cm (5 ft 1 in) tall, her lips now given a pinker shade instead of orange, her hair also grew longer and straighter down to her lower back and tied into half-twin tails with dark green hair ties.
She's also shown to be wearing a more modern and western style-high school uniform, with a light yellow sweater vest, white dress shirt, Aruba green colored plaid skirt and necktie, dark green jacket, black knee high socks, and rain-forest green Madison all star converses.
In the second chapter, she pierced her own ears in order to wear Kakyoin's cherry earrings as a memento to her mother. In the final chapter, she ties her jacket around her waist and had her sleeves rolled up to her elbows, her yellow vest is now gone, and she wears a watch on her left wrist.
After the universe reset, she's reborn as a different person now with her hair tied into twin-tails, wearing a frilly mint green spaghetti strap summer dress that reaches to her knees, a tan sunhat with a white ribbon on it, and a pair of flat tan ankle sandals, weirdly enough she still wears the cherry earrings from the original universe.
~Abilities~
Stand:
Noriko's Stand didn't manifest until she turned 17, it would later earn the name "Little Talks". Much like Hierophant Green, Little Talks is a Long-Range Stand that can extend to a modest extent. Although it's doesn't do projectile attacks, it makes up for it with by doing stealth attacks and using ice picker-like blades. Little Talk's Stand cry is "Kiruuuuuuu!..." similar to Flogging Molly, "kiru" meaning "scar" in Japanese.
Stand: Little Talks Type: Long-Range, Reconnaissance, Artificial Humanoid Abilities: Shadow stealth
Mastery:
Noriko is an inexperienced Stand user due to Little Talks being a late-bloomer, but makes up for this flaw by using her intellect to plan out strategies. Much like Flogging Molly, Little Talks is seen as a female-looking humanoid with artificial limbs, with the only difference being that it's more cyborg looking with green colored lining, body armor, and visors, dark teal skin, and light teal pigtails.
And much like her mother's Stand, Little Talks can grow  ice picker blades on it's palms that can overpower, maim, and scar enemies. Little Talks also does stealth attacks with it's shadow stealth ability, which allows it to hide in the shadows of objects or people and surprise their enemies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trivia:
Occording to Medea, she originally wanted to name her potential son after "Noriaki" in memory of Kakyoin, but ended up changing it to the more feminine "Noriko" when she found out her baby was a girl.
Her Stand, Little Talks, is named after the song under the same name by Icelandic indie folk and rock band: "Of Monsters and Men".
Noriko wants to become an idol due to having a crush on IRL musician and actor Gackt, at some point she wanted to purchase his Vocaloid "Gackpoid", but her parents refused due to being "too expensive".
