this. mf. has big hands. theyre real veiny and they're BIG. they're really soft n always warm <3 he won't wear any other ring except for one his mother left him, its gold and it has his last name engraved on it. his nails r pretty short, thats just how he likes to keep them. i personally can't see frank ever painting his nails but maybe he'll let you do it just once, because it makes you happy. he'll take it off like an hour after but only because he doesn't like the way it feels on his nails.

Ten Books To Know Me

Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.

Tagged by @softest-punk, thank you for utterly derailing my afternoon into nostalgia <3 My problem is less not picking ancient books and more not picking exclusively Canadian and English children’s lit published between 1995 and 1999. (Still the first three picks all the same though because it is like, the opus within which my psyche is almost wholly contained.) This got long but I'm going to be very brave and not apologize about that at all. I love talking about books, and these are some of the books I love the most. In chronological order of arrival into my heart.

Some of the Kinder Planets - Tim Wynne-Jones This book has been a part of my life for so long I cannot remember when, exactly, I first read it - only that it was taken from my gran’s shelf; Tim had sent her a copy with a lovely inscription. It’s a short story collection which remains today (and forever) my favourite format. Ted Chiang’s Exhalation, Karin Tidbeck’s Jagannath, Karen Russell’s Orange World, Margaret Atwood’s Stone Mattress are all fabulous examples, stacked before me at my desk, but Some of the Kinder Planets itself lives (alongside my two most precious childhood stuffies) at my mum’s house, the safest place of all. The stories are kids being kids in the way you want to read as a kid yourself: clever and wondering and scared and brave. Special mention also to his Zoom trilogy, beautifully illustrated in black and white by Eric Beddows.

Skellig - David Almond Another book likely pilfered from my granny’s library. There’s a little magic in Some of the Kinder Planets, but here is ALL the magical realism, and it changed me. This book has a sickly bird-or-man-or-angel in a garage being nursed to health by a boy with an ill baby sister in hospital that he can’t help at all; the indelible image of surviving off bluebottles and then getting snuck Chinese takeaway and brown ale; nature and weird kids and William Blake poems. I will weep if I continue thinking about it.

[Not Any Book But Just A Lot Of Books] - Kit Pearson, Diana Wynne-Jones, Kenneth Oppel, Philip Pullman, Madeleine L’Engle, etc. Listen, I know this is an INSANE cop-out but if you know the authors you know more or less exactly what I mean. These are the books that made me more tender than I already was, made me believe in Good, and Kindness, and Love, in a totally immutable way I thankfully do not ever want to change, because I don’t think I could.

Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett My first introduction to Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, and footnotes. Also one of the first books I did not simply pick up because it was Lying Around. I bought it because my older cousin listed it as one of her favourite books on Facebook, and she was (and is) impossibly, horribly cool. I was maybe 13 or 14 and wanted to be cool too. I’ve since read a smattering of Gaiman but I’ve yet to read Terry Pratchett on his own. I’d like to! I know I’d love it.

The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul - Douglas Adams Loaned to me by my best friend before we were best friends. It is, apparently, the second novel in the Dirk Gently series, and I remember nothing of it except a very good bit about a couch getting stuck in a stairwell; nonetheless it’s listed here because this is clearly actually a thinly disguised chronology of sentimentality, and also because Douglas Adams is a wonder and delight to read and I don’t need to fully remember the book to know that in my bones. I’m not sure if it’s fair but I’ll also blame Douglas Adams for my inability to be brief and to resist using semi-colons. Could’ve been someone else. But it was definitely someone English.

Sailing to Byzantium - W.B. Yeats This is not a book, but it was in my English Literature textbook in high school, so it counts. If it wasn’t, I would still count it. Why a sixteen year old girl connected with a poem that begins “That is no country for old men.” is irrelevant, as is every stanza but the third, which contains the fateful, ruinous lines: “Consume my heart away; sick with desire / And fastened to a dying animal / It knows not what it is;” I remember when I read it, and I remember the chill feeling of Yeats’ spectral hand reaching all the way from his grave in County Sligo, across the whole Atlantic and the enormous landmass called Canada, to reach into my chest and cruelly grab my own heart, and I remember thinking How, and Exactly. The first thing I read that named the strangeness I felt inside of me. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost of all my teenage angst. Written on my bones to this day, if I’m being honest.

Hamlet - Shakespeare We got off on the wrong foot, after I was personally victimized by the line ‘Brevity is the soul of wit’, but I do love Shakespeare. I credit this to having an excellent teacher for it, and reading it aloud in a cohort of tryhards and musicians and theatre kids. A case of familiarity breeds...appreciation, actually. We did a lot of Shakespeare, but we were asked to learn 20 lines of Hamlet specifically, and rewrite them, marked down for every error. Forty lines for bonus marks. There was much grousing and it seemed like a cruel, outdated task of rote memorization, but writing this a decade later, I am belatedly realizing this was a sneaky way to get a bunch of kids to recite a soliloquy so much that they couldn’t help but find the life in it, the rhythm and meter to make it stick in our minds. And now look! I love it! I am writing fanfic in iambic pentameter! Wherefore art my fucking restraint!! I learned my lines so hideously well that when I pulled up the scene just now (2.2, from “Yet I, a dull and muddy-mettled rascal peak”), I a) noticed and b) was offended by, minute differences from the version I memorized, which I then searched out and knew the moment I found. Incredible?!  

Still Life With Woodpecker - Tom Robbins The most recent time I’ve read a work of fiction and been rearranged by it, at the tender age of 21. here I am, I wrote, in my journal, after a very good sob, happier and more rudderless than ever. This man writes with totally unfettered joy and unhinged sincerity, two things I am hopelessly into, but also with a deep distaste for institutions and conformity that I desperately needed back then: lost, returned from a year of magical realism and the sort of adulthood growth spurt that makes you feel dizzy, home and yet horribly missing the home I’d made for myself elsewhere, all my nearly-fulfilled ambitions towards security and prestigious government postings feeling sort of hollow and reeking in my hands. It comforted me that I wasn't wrong as much as it spilled my own guts into my hands, and while I went on for another year seeing things through, it planted a seed that quickly grew proper roots and pushed me right off the ledge of respectability. And it’s a love story, of course.

It’s his prose that sits glowing on the horizon to me when I try to write richly: a distant shore of orgiastic language (from which you can surely hear the wind-carried cries of people fucking day and night), towards which I, still shy and prudish, ever point my prow.

How to Be Happy - Eleanor Davis A comic collection. Sharp and wonderful and alive. Another Best Friend gift (bless those around us with impeccable taste), of which every single panel is MARVELOUS. I meant to share one of my favourites here but apparently it has! Gotten up and left!! I will buy another copy in hopes of coaxing it back out of wherever it’s hiding.

Down to Earth - Monty Don This did not rearrange anything. But it does give me a good hug about it, so to speak. A month-by-month gardening guide which is chock-full of brilliant, sensible advice, and also so cheerfully comforting in a highly specific English way that I actually feel like I’m drinking a cuppa whenever I read a page or two of it. It makes me think of my grandmother. And so we’ve come full circle, eh?

I hope some of you are now nodding thoughtfully and thinking, well, Chrissakes, that explains it. ok so ive Posted my boy Harvy GUNK a few times, but ive never actually talked about him For Reals before. and thats a crime

Harvy is/was my Lovelink mc, but mostly ive kinda divorced him from it bc. i dont really like lovelink that much anymore lol

he's canadian/chinese, born and raised by a single mom in Vancouver, Canada. i think i even know what specific street he grew up on but i forgot what it is lol i think it was Hastings iirc?

he's thirty-something, trans, and bisexual/demiromantic. he was raised an only child but he has a sister about 16 years younger than him

his mom was a sex worker & for a few years she didn't know who his dad was, but when she learned who it was she & his dad got closer and eventually ended up getting married as he was a very sweet and caring, if lonely, man. shortly after the wedding, his dad's job wanted him to go back to china, but Harvy was 16 years old, fairly independant, & didnt want to finish his last few years of high school in a country he couldnt speak the language of, so after a conversation w his parents they decided that he should be emancipated so he could finish high school at the school he was already enrolled in. he does his best to keep in touch w his parents, both then and now, but sometimes life gets in the way. also theyre good people but not necessarily the best at being parents, his mom especially. she loves and supports him, she just tends to be a bit absent and assumes hes fine w it because he never tells her otherwise (the emancipation was his idea though). on the flip side, he's always assumed his mom would have had a better life without him, and that things are better for her now that she's settled down with her husband and theyre new baby. theyre both just kinda...... bad at communicating with each other

since then, hes just kind of wandered all over canada and the united states, doing whatever he feels like and temping or working part time. he never really stays in one place for more than a few years. he typically does sex work-adjacent type jobs, like working at sex shops. he thinks its fun and prefers it to other types of retail work

his long list of lovers includes but is not limited to a kpop star, a convict, the convict's brother who framed said convict (plot twist it was the cops who framed both of them), one doctor Tobias Carrick, the ranch hand at a ranch a semi-estranged aunt left for him in her will, several tattoo artists, famous pop star Lisa Valentine, the son of a mafia don who was just using him as bait for the don of a rival crime family who he thought was Harvy's father, said don of the rival crime family (theres no relation- Harvy was friends w his actual son, who died when they were young, & has a very similar name to the kid), famed hollywood director/actor husbands duo Thomas Hunt and Avalon, and a centaur. yes most of these are lovelink characters and Yes i am putting my own headcanons into it bc i dislike how actual canon went. also some choices characters bc Of Course <3

I’d usually leave my commentary in the tags but I genuinely actually really dislike these guys. They definitely contributed to my internalized sinophobia growing up and I hate that they’re so babied by others despite being a cult, simply because people believe anything condemned by China must be a victim.

They’re surprisingly active here in Canada, where their members are often portrayed as refugees, and that’s how they’ve sort of minutely affected my life.

Growing up as a Canadian-born Chinese, I didn’t have a lot of sources on China, so when I finally discovered a channel like China Uncensored in ~2016, I got really excited. But then I started noticing the sinophobia in his videos and in the comment sections, and it made me feel pretty awful about being Chinese. I’d always known the government was “bad” because of things I’ve been told growing up (eg communism is bad so the Chinese government is bad; China is kind of backwards and dirty; the government can brainwash people; the government censors things; etc etc) but having to internalize others’ outright sinophobia while getting sinophobic information from a channel I’d hoped would provide an actually uncensored and thus unbiased look into China… Yeah. It stung.

Fortunately sinophobia was something I did want to fight (especially when it was the basic stuff like “Chinese people are gross and eat dogs”), so I soon distanced myself from stuff like China Uncensored, but it could have affected me so much worse if I let it. I’m glad I didn’t become one of those self-hating Asians.

And sure enough, it wasn’t until way, way later that I learned he’s likely funded by the Falun Gong.

It is frustrating things like this are done underhandedly and sneakily even though they definitely have a clear agenda, as seen by the Shen Yun performances becoming basically religious sermons halfway through. I’ve never been to one myself, but I’ve heard the stories.

I also hate that because of the advertising and vagueness about their religious beliefs, I did want to go to one of those shows as a kid that was pretty starved of Chinese culture. I really thought they could offer it, and I can’t imagine what could have happened if I actually got to go to one and got exposed to their rhetoric through a showy, fluffed up performance that disguises the agenda behind it.

Thankfully the desire was never strong enough for me to ask my (more grounded in Chinese culture) parents to take me, but if it was, I can’t even be sure they’d realize Shen Yun’s connections to the Falun Gong, or at least they may not have realized it back then, because yes the religiousness of it is overt, but the Falun Gong part isn’t as overt. And even if my parents did realize back then Shen Yun was a Falun Gong thing, I myself could still buy into it as an impressionable kid, and I hate that cults do work by preying on people’s desires and vulnerabilities (eg there’s little chance my mom would believe in the Falun Gong, but she has grown more and more religious over the years to the point of some non-scientific beliefs, and she’s fallen prey to a few MLMs. And as something that works the same way, there will always be people falling for the Falun Gong’s propaganda, especially since it’s quite difficult to find anything that will openly admit it does propaganda).

My brother actually lived in a house with a Falun Gong believer when he went to undergrad, and the man would talk about how historically Chinese people could fly and do some sort of magic (basically the kind of stuff you see in wuxia films). It certainly sounds ridiculous, but the fact that people can be susceptible to this kind of thing shows why China does have a stricter eye on the promotion of “superstitious beliefs.”

I’ve gotten Falun Gong Shen Yun ads attached to my door and seen them around in places like Chinatown, but thankfully I hardly run into an actual practitioner. In some ways this is just as frustrating though, because they’re clearly trying to affect lives in more underhanded ways than the more easily dismissed methods of “do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ?” of Jehovah’s witnesses and other missionaries.

For example, even when people are aware they’re a cult with some pretty extremist views, the rumours about organ harvesting get them to extend sympathy toward the Falun Gong, as seen in illuminaughty’s video. I actually personally don’t watch their content because of some of their views on China that I disagree with, and some of that commonly-accepted anti-China rhetoric does seem to bleed through into even a video that’s meant to “expose” the Falun Gong. I’m thus glad to see people (OP and those in the comments/notes) mention that their videos can be kind of surface-level.

One of the things I hate the most about the Falun Gong though is indeed The Epoch Times. Sure it gets to claim itself as a “news” organization, but it doesn’t have to claim it’s affiliated with the Falun Gong, and in reality it’s really more so just outright media propaganda. It’s all far-right bullshit too, and the absolute sinophobia dripping from the pages drives me up the wall.

We got one at our door at the height of the pandemic, spewing all the usual rhetoric about how China unleashed the virus on purpose from a lab to destroy the west and blah blah blah. It was easy for my family and I to roll our eyes at it and throw it out, but I just know they left one at the doors of all my neighbours, and I hate thinking of the effect that could have on them.

Like I do think it’s pretty obvious that The Epoch Times is propaganda at first glance, but anyone is susceptible to propaganda. I feel like this is only exacerbated by the ease with which it is to view the Falun Gong as pure-hearted victims of religious persecution, especially when their connections to things like The Epoch Times aren’t obvious.

The Falun Gong’s beliefs are far-right and from what I know pretty nasty, such as promoting homogeneity and homophobia and various harmful/backwards/non-scientific practices and so on, yet their extremism barely registers on the larger scale. Just recently, Canada promoted an animated documentary about “refugee” Falun Gong practitioners at a film festival. I found it while looking for experimental animated documentaries I could use for one of my Film Studies classes’ projects, and as much as I want to be open-minded and include a variety of documentaries in my project, I could not bring myself to draw any attention toward that film.

It really painted the Falun Gong as hapless and innocent, reducing their beliefs to practices that were portrayed as soothing tai-chi. And tai-chi is still a thing in China!! That’s not why the Falun Gong are condemned, but the film would have you think otherwise, and it made me really uncomfortable. Even beyond the fact I wouldn’t want to draw my professor or classmates’ attention to it, I also realize I could not in good faith write an unbiased summary of its relevance to my project, so I completely ignored it despite hoping to find some sort of animated documentary on China to include in my project (I ended up going with a short from Yao—Chinese Folktales. It’s not an animated documentary per se, but it was presented as one and its vagueness worked for my project).

Anyway, I rambled a whole bunch, but basically, these guys really really frustrate me because it’s easy for people here in the west to buy into their beliefs because the Chinese government only ever does “evil,” so banning them must have been another “evil CCP thing.” Honestly I feel like they can be considered a huge contributor to the recent rise in sinophobia—among many other factors of course—and that makes it all even more grating, especially since the west is more lenient with the Falun Gong because of this (since they can be a useful political tool). Plus this way the west can portray themselves as not entirely sinophobic because they support these specific Chinese people [who practice the Falun Gong]. It’s just all so sinophobic and gets all tangled and political and frustrating. 😔

I fell into the Shen Yun/Fa Lun Gong trap and am so mad at myself for that. Scale me on stupidity and warn your followers, they gotta hear it.

I would not call victims of cults stupid so therefore be free of the scale!! Reasonable and intelligent people are still susceptible to falling into cults, falling for scams, MLMs, etc. If you do not know much about anything related to Falun Gong's beliefs or the stories they tell (cough make up coughcough) through Shen Yun, then it is easy to get reeled in.

It doesn't help that a lot of the English language info that pops up when you Google Falun Gong/Shen Yun is positive, to the point that even the Falun Gong Wikipedia page paints them as a mostly innocuous spiritual group persecuted by the Evil CCP. They really like to play up this angle, by the way, and sadly for many people in the west, they hear the part where they're forbidden by the CPC and think that automatically means Falun Gong is good and everything they say must be true.

I honestly wouldn't bother to link this video as a source except it seems like one of the bigger ones that show up in a Youtube search, and they do touch on a lot of sources. Their research just seems really shallow and their commentary on the issue is rudimentary to the point of being unnecessary tbh.

Neighbours 1952  

propaganda and politics in the 50s animations

Normal McLauren made the film Neighbours after his trip to China for social work. He developed empathy for the Chinese people during his trip. When he came back to Canada he found that Canadian people did not see China in a good light and there was war tension between communist and capitalist countries especially because the Korean war was going on. Another issue during the 50’s was segregation and gentrification, where highways were built as walls to separate wealthy and poor people in neighborhoods. Neighbours features two men sharing a pipe happily and taking turns smelling a flower. However, they were not satisfied with sharing the flower, so they fought each other for it! The two men push, shove each other, build walls and destroy each other's houses. They even kick and beat each other's wives and children with pegs. Just look at this picture with a women laying dead on the floor and the man ready to slam the baby into the ground like he’s about to throw down a sandbag. 

So much was lost over a measly flower. McLauren has illustrated men's nature to fight over the things that they want and the lack of sense that leads to war, conflict and casualty that destroys neighborhoods.  

Neighbours was filmed in 16mm Kodachrome film stock. It is a cheaper film to save costs which is great because their technique requires a lot of film. Norman McLauren used pixilation animation which means he took pictures of people doing actions to create the animation. They would set up a camera, have the men hold the pose, then take two photos (animation is typically shot on 2 frames).  The same animation principles used in traditional paper animation applys to this technique. An example of timing and spacing is at 2:28 where the two men are sliding and skating around the grass. The space the men move between the photos at the start is small but progressively, they reposition a larger distance than they did in the previous photo. The effect is the two men slowing skate at the start then speeds up dramatically. Another interesting sequence is at 2:31 where the two men dive towards the flower. The start of the dive has some blurry frames of the men unlike the rest of the sequence which has clear shots of the men. The photo must have been taken when the men were moving instead of holding a pose. This blurry effect is like smear frames used for super-fast actions. I’m not sure if it was intentional but it fits perfectly because the dive starts out fast with large spaces between frames and then slows out to a stop with smaller spaces between frames as they approach the flower.

The coolest thing about Pixilation animation is the special effects. It can do special effects like fences popping out magically as seen in 4:02 where the man walks in a line holding a single fence and the other fence pegs pop out behind him. 

The film Neighbours was not appreciated in Canada. It was shown in NFB art house theatres and distributed by Columbia pictures. The theatres, distributors and audiences in Canada were not impressed. American theatre distributors did not like it either, they deemed it “too gruesome and of a poor technical quality”. However, a man, Mayer Kingsley took it to 35mm to show in New York 1952 and persisted to book the Translux theatre alongside O Henrys full house show starring Anne Baxter and Marilyn Monroe for several weeks. From there Neighbours qualified for academy awards Oscar nominations, found critical acclaim in France and UK, won an Oscar and won the Canadian audio-visual preservation trust masterwork. Then every Canadian distributor wanted Neighbours. It still did poorly in Canadian theatres. It was more often shown in schools instead. American education distributors cut the sequence of women and babies attacked; In 1967 conflicts in Vietnam spurred Mclauren to put back the sequence of women and babies being attacked.

Colella's Supermarket (America's Special Mission Force)

Colella's Supermarket, located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts (now shut down), was modeled to help employees, of highschool (highschool jobs allowed for military cadet or police informant or state police status at college) and town labor (those found in poverty but allowed to live in town, the generous support system found through the Ludlow family, the "Spiders", descents of Queen Elizabeth I, the "Virgin Queen"). The model, is to survive Buchenwald, a famous death camp in Italy during World War 2, intended for political opponents of Benito Mussolini (the man who invented "Dro", poisoned marijuana, instrumental in Hitler's election to the German Chancellorship).

Through Colella's, ATF operatives (those dealing in grocer's union rules, to counter Canada) are trained and outfitted in cross multitasked operation skills, and a work disorder called "Vladivostock", hated by the French nationals in New England for producing lithe, thin, muscled, and burly men, and vivacious women, however with the same food intake as French prison guards (large, obese men, and greasy ugly women).

Here are my five special operations, using Blockbuster Video, a Trump owned company, now shut down and transferred to Rotary Presidential Association ownership (YouTube) due to my acts of valor in the field, against Canada.

"Death Race 2000": The resistance to the Boston Mafia, while infiltrating the police services of Canadian Mounted Patrol, and the removal of the Boston Mossad office, the alleged State Police control; actually located on highway stations, with police living in apartment complexes out of Chestnut Hill Realty.

"CB4": The shutdown of the clad feminist, those women who demand independence and power, however are infirmed under severe physical handicap. The "Pink Panthers" movement, they are found in every walk of life, and they are "walking", at all times, in the words of famous Hopkinton crime boss, Alex "Wheels" Danahy, his label by local police authorities. The hunt for "Wheels", through his alias tags of those disabled online, continues, to catch each of the "enabled" community, for their dream, the American Dream, of running people off the road in traffic at screaming speeds, in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's special car. Once all the disabilities were cured, they believed they could be immortal, with cybernetics and slaves in the French, Israeli, and Taiwanese Maoist enclaves of INTERPOL, run by the Mainland Red Chinese. Sadly, the CS Lewis dream, has been shut down, and "The Matrix", is at an end; now, merely a movie, about what could've been.

"8MM": The creation of a new arts movement, where only wealthy envoys from foreign countries are killed, and on reality TV, if they volunteer to represent their homeland, "The Croatan Society", the Titoist movement supported by the famous "Boston Strangler", the De Salvo family and DC Comics. Previously, actresses were murdered, for reporting a lesbian haze from a female homosexual, a guidance law student, however now those women are saved, and become attorneys at law instead, with the haze artists kicked out on the streets, to be supported by their home countries; where their language is garbled, without the UN Law Academy to assist them. Suspecting their famous friend, "Riker", but not the cad, "Xanatos", they are in a state of misery, losing their top volunteer envoys, "The United Nations Mossad", and other Persian Jews, to the streets, with famous investments like Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks Coffee, the "barista" job, a share owner in the Vietnamese coffee trade, shut down. No longer can Reagan Foundation purchases of businesses occur, for those little yellow girls, "Hello Kitty". Now, the kitty can't eat human flesh, a dead drama club champion; "cat", in the Chinese boneless spare ribs.

"Bowfinger": The end to the internet supremacy of France and Israel, with the recovery of women marked with disabilities through claimed "household accidents", actually Apple technology from Steve Jobs, employed on timed circuits for the "Holocaust History Museum", the radio promotions industry; "the champagne room". All those stolen children from police officer fathers, taken to strip clubs in prison towns, returned to the life meant for them, that of euthanization, and their fathers freed from their long duty, no longer victims of the National Hockey League and the radio promo guys, "Bobby Brown", his ballad made famous by Frank Zappa, the man himself. Now, lesbian marriages to men are over, and women can marry whom they presume to choose, without mob threats from Sheriffs Unions, B'nai B'rith, and we can return to some semblance of life; the days of MUSH, are over. 4chan, is gone, and 8chan, is the future, of the modern internet, where nobody pays attention if you post on "chan", the Waters Foundation; you wanted the Holocaust, Islam; Small Penis Humiliation.
