Sasikala to decide when she wants to become Tamil Nadu CM: AIADMK leader at India Today Conclave
AIADMK spokesperson V Maitreyan hinted that the party was ready for general secretary Sasikala to take over as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
Responding to a question at the India Today Conclave-South, Maitreyan said, "It is up to Chinamma (Sasikala) when she decides to take over as the Chief Minister. We cannot say anything."
His comments assume significance in the view of the AIADMK tradition that the general secretary has always been the chief minister when the party is in power.
Collaborating what Maitreyan said, India Today Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai quoted a senior Tamil Nadu bureaucrat saying that the administration was preparing for a change of guard in the government.
According to sources, Sardesai said that Sasikala might take over as the Tamil Nadu CM either on January 12 or January 18 as these two are 'auspicious dates'.
Earlier during his speech, Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan said that the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa epitomised nationalism in the real sense of the term.
Speaking at the first India Today Conclave-South, Maitreyan said, "Jayalalithaa can be summarised as the nationalist to the core."
Maitreyan said that Jayalalithaa's stand on terrorism displayed her nationalist outlook. "Her stand on terrorism was unambiguous. She believed that terrorism needed to be wiped out completely. That's why she supported POTA during Vajpayee's regime and UAPA during Manmohan Singh's rule."
Jayalalithaa had immense respect for former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP said.
Relating an incident when her Kannadiga opponents wanted her to apologise for saying that she was Tamilian, Maitreyan said that "Jayalalithaa refused to express regret sorry saying she did not utter untruth. She asserted that she was a proud Tamilian. She lived for the people of Tamil Nadu."
Maitreyan said that Jayalalithaa brought 67 per cent reservation for the downtrodden and deprived section of society in Tamil Nadu.
"Every scheme of her was for the welfare of the people, especially the poor, in Tamil Nadu. From cradle-baby scheme to Brand Amma canteen- everything that she did was for the people of Tamil Nadu," Maitreyan said.
He said that Jayalalithaa's life was one of 'sacrifice'. Her favourite mythical character was Bhishma, the one who sacrificed his youth for his father."
Maitreyan said, "Jayalalithaa's motto was- I am by the people and for the people."

He gave a tagline to the movie that reads, ‘Love is Dangerously Political’. He also gave gist of the movie.
It reads, ‘Set Against Merciless Men, Prisons and Mannargudi Gangs!’ Seems like the director is getting obsessed with the stories about political leaders and…

Opinion: Sasikala's fate strangely resembles Janaki Ramachandran
This high voltage drama of factional feud and struggle over two leaf symbol is primitive in AIADMK. Years before, Janaki Ramachandran, wife of MGR the founder of the party, was estranged like Sasikala. After reading this history it is evident that the recent days experienced the resurgence of Janaki Ramachandran.
After grieving over Amma's death Sasikala Natrajan, a close confidante of Jayalalithaa became interim general secretary of AIADMK.
×
5 December 2016 was a turning point in Tamil Nadu's politics as AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa passed away. Paneerselvam, a trusted lieutenant of Amma who already served as the chief minister twice for a short time, was sworn in as the chief minister again. After grieving over Amma's death, Sasikala Natrajan, a close confidante of Jayalalithaa, became interim general secretary of AIADMK on 5 February 2016.
Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao accepted the resignation of OPS on the very next day, thus, paving the way for Chinamma (Sasikala) to put her foot in Amma's boot. High potential political drama commenced as soon as OPS claimed he was forced to resign and Jayalalithaa's soul asked him to speak the truth.
Sasikala still seemed to hold the grip over her party until she was convicted by Honourable Supreme Court on the 21-year long Disproportionate Asset case. Before her way to prison, Sasikala was able to make her loyalist Edapaddi K Palaniswamy the chief minister and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran as the deputy general secretary of AIADMK. RK Nagar by-poll was necessary since the seat was vacated due to Amma's death. Meanwhile, OPS was able to garner some support amongst the veterans of the party.
Thus, the Dravidian party was divided into two parts - OPS lead AIADMK (Puratchi Thalivi Amma) with E. Madhusudanan as a candidate and electric pole its election symbol. Another camp was rather powerful which was headed by Sasikala and her rubber stamp Chief Minister EK Palaniswamy with TTV Dhinakaran as a candidate and a hat as election symbol. But TTV Dhinakaran was charged with bribing the people which made the election commission to delay the by-poll.
EPS and OPS factions announced their merger by sealing a deal with EPS as Chief Minister and OPS as his deputy and Sasikala and her family members to be removed from the party.
×
21 August was perhaps a day of surprise as far as Tamil Nadu politics is concerned because EPS and OPS factions announced their merger by sealing a deal with EPS as chief minister and OPS as his deputy. With the merger, Sasikala and her family members were removed from the party.
Jayalalithaa will be their eternal general secretary and there will be more political responsibilities given to OPS and administrative responsibility will be shouldered by EPS. By mid-September, Sasikala was officially sacked and all postings made by her, including elevation of her nephew as party's deputy general secretary, were squashed.
Although the stars were not in favour of Sasikala, there was still a silver lining for her political career. The first silver lining was that her nephew had the support of odd 19 MLAs. Those MLAs submitted letters to TN Governor expressing their lack of confidence in CM Palaniswamy. But this silver lining soon darkened as the speaker disqualified 18 MLAs under Anti-Defection rules of TN Legislative Assembly.
The high court is also analysing this move, but anyway, this move of speaker lowered the halfway mark in the assembly. Another silver lining to Sasikala was the frozen 'two leaves' symbol of AIADMK. The two leaf symbol is necessary for any of the faction to win the match.
The high voltage drama of factional feud and struggle over two leaf symbol is primitive in AIADMK.
×
But this silver lining also darkened as Election Commission bestowed this two leaf symbol to EPS-OPS faction keeping Sasikala and her family at a bay. The position of Sasikala faction will be more visible in coming days as re-election for RK Nagar constituency will take place on 21 December of this year.
This high voltage drama of factional feud and struggle over two leaf symbol is primitive in AIADMK. Years before Janaki Ramachandran, wife of MGR the founder of the party was estranged like Sasikala in these days. MG Ramachandran formed ADMK owing to ideological differences between him and M. Karunanidhi.
Election Commission froze the two leaves symbol (retai ellai) symbol giving a cock symbol to Jayalalithaa and a pair of pigeon to Janaki.
×
MGR served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu twice. After his death in December 1987, the party was divided into two factions one under MGR's widow Janaki Ramachandran and another under Jayalalithaa. Janaki was sworn in as CM for 24 days but lost the trust vote on the house floor.
Election Commission froze the two leaves symbol (retai ellai) symbol, giving a cock symbol to Jayalalithaa and a pair of pigeon to Janaki. But both the faction suffered defeat as M Karunanidhi-led DMK swept the assembly elections. After that Janaki Ramachandran tendered her resignation and the two factions were unified under Jayalalithaa.
After reading this history, it is evident that the recent days experienced the resurgence of Janaki Ramachandran. Thing is that we are not learning from history. The reason for learning history is to avoid old mistakes and learn from them.
I think Sasikala didn't take a lesson from her party's history. Another point is that the 21st century India still believe in rhetorics like Amma, Chinamma, Behenji, Netaji, Kalingar, etc. The habit of Indians to vote for such rhetorics paved the way for people like Sasikala and Janaki to rule over us. I hope other parties and our dear voters would learn from it.

MEENA SERENDIB - Places we used to call home #1 USA Narration and photographs by Meena as part of ‘Places we used to call home’. 84/5 Lauries Road I wasn't sure if this was the house when I got there. I came back twice, walking up and down the lane each time. Ultimately, I had to message my cousin Sitparan to make sure I'd got it right. I had. This was a place we used to call home. My two aunts, Chootu Mami and Yogi Mami, and their families lived here. Chootu Mami was upstairs, Yogi Mami was downstairs. Gradually everyone began to move. UK, US, Australia. Until there was just Chootu Mami and my cousin Abhi left. But as long as I have been coming to Ceylon, someone had been here, and I've never known this country without them. I have such fond memories of this home. The coolness of the red clay floors. Masses of greenery from the verandah upstairs. The bronze Nataraj in the main hall. Chootu Mami was a Bharatanatyam teacher. The house was always so beautifully decorated with statues and batiks. I have a lot of cousins in Ceylon, but most of them are younger to me. Abhi was the one cousin I had who was my age. She and I could talk about things that you're not supposed to talk about in Tamil society. And we would laugh. If either one of us got the giggles, it was pretty much game over. One time I laughed so hard I peed a little. I never told her that. The last time I saw her was in 2012. I came back to Ceylon in 2016, but by then they'd moved and sold. This is my first time coming down the lane since then. There's a liquor store at the top of the road. Ariyapala Traders. The first thing I wanted to do after I took this photo was buy a bottle. Instead, I went shopping. 19 A/2 Alfred Place As I was walking down the lane, I heard someone yelling at me. I guessed that it was some type of watcher. I turned, and it was. He softened as soon as he understood that my Appa's acca used to live here. I was not expecting to cry when I got here. Of all the homes my family has left, this sale felt the most natural. Valli Mami lived her life to the fullest and died contentedly here. My cousins are all living abroad and they're happy. Valli Mami passed in December 2014 I believe; the house was sold in May 2016. My cousins sold the house to the neighbors, a family who's lived here as long as ours had. This house was a regular stopping point for everyone on my Appa's side. You didn't come to Ceylon without staying at Valli Mami's. She was an elegant old broad. An awesome sometimes terrifying combination of class and sass. I think, being here, less than the loss of the home, I feel the loss of her. 55 School Lane This house is next door to a family friend's. Neither she nor I ever knew the owners personally; it's not a space that anyone in my family ever identified as "home". But it was someone's home, and it's this house that prompted me to start documenting these places. Places we used to call home. I was here just 8 months ago and couldn't recall this construction. I asked our family friend what was going on. "It belonged to a Canadian Tamil," she said. "They've sold it." When I asked her why they sold, she couldn't say for sure. "They're settled there, they're not coming back." she guessed. They had sold the home to a Sinhalese gem jeweller who lives across the way. 107 Brown Road This home is technically still in our family. It belongs to my Chinamma, who lives in Colombo. My Ammamma and all her siblings were born and raised in this house. No one lives here now, but in 1989 it was FULL of people. It has one of those classic floor plans, with the central courtyard set in and rooms along the perimeter. I remember feeling so free in that space. I think with that layout, you can't help but feel otherwise. It's all air and sunlight and room to run. The strange thing is, I don't know if my cousin-siblings have any of the same memories or associations with this house that I do. My Chinamma will never sell, I know that. But after she's gone? I don't know. Photo1 and 2: 84/5 Lauries Road (28 February 2017) Photo 3: 19 A/2 Alfred Place (1 March 2017) Photo 4: 55 School Lane (24 February 2017) Photo 5: 107 Brown Road (9 March 2017)
