By • Olalekan Fagbade Chief of Army Staff Gen Lagbaja reveals what Army will do  to bolster fighting spirit of  Soldiers   The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja says the army would organise more trainings to rejuvenate the fighting spirit of troops engaged in various operations across the country. Lagbaja spoke at the opening of a one-day seminar organised by the army’s Department of Transformation and Innovation for troops of Nigeria Army 6 Division in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. The seminar had the theme: “Intensifying Warrior Ethos, Regimentation in the Nigerian Army, Management of Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Drug Substance Abuse.” He said the country was currently faced with a myriad of complex security challenges that puts an enormous responsibility for personnel to mitigate the challenges. “To solve this, the army must continue to review its tactics, techniques and procedures, and come up with implementable strategies to defeat the adversaries with both kinetic and non-kinetic means. Also, of worrisome to us is the prevailing incidence of drug and substance abuse as well as PTSD among troops deployed in the theatres of operation across the country. “These concerns necessitated that troops are sensitized to the effect of drug and substance abuse and management of the stress disorder in order to maintain combat effectiveness,” he said. Lagbaja said it was important for army commanders at all levels to redirect their efforts towards restoring the fighting spirit of all troops under their command. “This cannot be achieved without discipline which is the fulcrum on which all aspects of military regimentation rests. “Regimentation helps in creating the bond, cohesion and discipline required for the conduct of military operations. “Hence, this seminar seeks to rekindle the warrior spirit and regimentation in all commanders and their troops through innovative thinking; critical approaches and implementable strategies premised on my command philosophy,” he added. The army chief said the seminar would also be used to rejuvenate the tenets of basic soldering with strict adherence to the traditions, customs, and ethics of the army. He said the army under his command had taken actionable steps to improve its leadership operational effectiveness and administration – being the focal points of his mission statement. Lagbaja gave the assurance that the army would continue to remain loyal to the constitutional democratic governance led by President Bola Tinubu in tandem with the interest of well-meaning Nigerians. Spiritual efforts needed to defeat Boko Haram —Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said that terrorism and terrorist groups could not be eliminated alone by the military unless religious bodies and organisations in the country come to the “forefront of this spiritual battle.” The Army chief noted that the focus must be religious groups interfacing on addressing the ideologies which fuelled the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists. Buratai stated this on Monday in Abuja during a spiritual warfare seminar at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre with the theme, “Countering insurgency and violent extremism in Nigeria through spiritual warfare.” The Army chief, who was represented by the Chief of Administration, Maj. Gen. Sani Yusuf, urged Islamic and Christian clerics across the Army formations to join the fight against terrorism, and reorient the people against negative ideologies. Buratai said, “It is easier to defeat Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists than their ideology because, while we degrade the terrorists and their havens, the narrative of the ideology grows the group. “Therefore, communities, families, and groups should join in the fight and narratives to reject and prevent the ideologies of the terrorists and extremist groups. “Religious bodies and organisations in particular who interface regularly with the grassroots should be at the forefront of this spiritual battle and fashion out ways of stepping up their roles. “The fight against terrorism, Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as other security threats, cannot be left to the troops in the battle field alone. “Yes, we will do our duties, but the need to tackle groups through spiritual warfare and re-orientating the followers against the ideology is also a necessity. “It is a well-known fact that terrorism and terrorist groups cannot be totally eliminated by mainly military actions. “This means focusing our efforts on the underlying narratives through ideologies that are employed by these terrorists to lure innocent citizens to their fold. “The need to defeat the ideologies of Boko Haram and ISWAP is based on the awareness that it is the ideologies that enhance their resources and help to recruit new fighters to their fold and as such; kill their ideology and the terrorist movement withers and dies.” The Army chief added that religious leaders and clerics who regularly interface with members of the society must “fashion out ways of stepping up roles, remembering that the fight against terrorism is a collective responsibility.” Read the full article

Missing N400 million: Nigerian army court martial former GOC

The Nigerian Army has commenced the trial of the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, Sokoto, Major General Hakeem Otiki, over alleged stolen N400 million by some soldiers under his command. The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, while inaugurating the General Court Martial on Tuesday in Abuja, said the trial was in line with the Armed Forces Act Cap A20 Laws of the Federation 2014. The General Court Martial is to be presided over by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Lamidi Adeosun, as the president of the court. Members of the court are A.A Tarfa from the Headquarters Training and Doctrine Nigerian Army, F.O Agugo from Department of Army Transformation and Innovation and J.S Malu from the Headquarters Nigerian Army Engineers. Others are M.A. Muhammed from the Headquarters Nigerian Army Signal, C.T Olukuju from Land Forces Stimulation Centre while C.C Okonkwo will serve as a waiting member. All the members are of the rank of major general. Buratai, a lieutenant general, also appointed A. Muhammed, a major, from the Headquarters Directorate of Army Legal Services as the Judge Advocate of the court. The prosecuting officers are J.A Orumo, J,AObot, from the Office of the National Security Adviser, I.A Suleman from Guards Brigade. They are all majors. According to the convening order issued by Buratai, the General Court Martial as composed is to assemble at Army Headquarters Command Mess Abuja for the purpose of trying the accused person.

Major General Hakeem Otiki on a wheel chair at the inauguration of the General Court Martial “The charges are to be served on the accused person or his counsel not later than 24 hours before arraignment. “The prosecuting and defence counsels will respectively call witnesses to prove their cases in accordance with the law. “The accused person is entitled to a defence counsel of his choice and accused person is to inform the convening officer of his counsel not later than 24 hours before the commencement of the trial. “Recommended books to be used are the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended; Armed Forces Act Cap A20 Laws of the Federation 2004; Evidence Act number 18 of 2011; Rules of Procedures, Army 1972; the Holy Bible; the Holy Quran and any other relevant document,” he said. The army authorities had in July begun the interrogation of the former GOC over the missing N400 million. Five soldiers had been confirmed to have carted away a consignment containing the money, while on an escort duty from Sokoto to Kaduna States in July. Read the full article

Nigerian Army has refrained from appointing acting COAS and has cautioned against any calls for military takeover

Reports that an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) would be chosen to succeed Army Chief Taoreed Lagbaja have been refuted by the Nigerian Army. Lagbaja is "hale and hearty" and on his yearly leave, according to the DHQ. Concerns regarding Lagbaja's whereabouts and well-being have been expressed by the public. Rumors of Lagbaja's de@th have been rejected by the Nigerian Army as "fake news." According to internet rumors, a senior officer has been designated as acting COAS by the army authorities to cover for the leadership void. According to Tukur Gusau, the director of defense information, Lagbaja is following traditional military protocol while evaluating regular reports from Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the chief of policy and planning. Gusau issued a treasonous warning to individuals who were advocating for a military coup, advising them to stop. There isn't an appointment like that in the Armed Forces Nigerian (AFN), according to the DHQ. All Service Chiefs are carrying out their responsibilities as outlined in the FGN Constitution, and the AFN is properly run. The DHQ asks media outlets to confirm facts with the relevant authorities prior to disseminating false information, and it exhorts anyone spreading baseless rumors to stop right now. The mandate to take appropriate measures against any individual or group pushing for unconstitutional changes in the nation has been given to the AFN and pertinent security agencies. COAS, Buratai speaks on killings, says internal, external forces against Nigeria

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. T.Y Buratai has said that the current crisis in Plateau, Benue, Taraba and Zamfara States are both internally and externally induced. He said so many forces were against Nigeria. Buratai stated this on Friday when he addressed the press during the Army Day Celebration in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. He said, “The target is the corporate existence of Nigeria as a country. The blame game along ethnic and religious fault lines is not the solution. Nigerians must unite to solve this serious challenge. “The Nigerian Army is not sleeping. We are continuously exploiting all the linkages and leads towards addressing the security challenges we shall get to the roots of all the crisis militarily. Therefore, we must be tolerant of one another and give peace a chance. “Let us also remember that no nation can develop or be economically vibrant without peace.
