Rob Garren posted a beautiful cockerel from his purple poultry project the other day, though i think this bird is from his general iridescent breeding pen. The bird is beautiful and looks like an oil slick. There isnt a "gene" that causes this, this is Rob selecting for more and more iridescence over time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also got some up close pictures of the feathers and they are breathtaking

You can follow Rob's project at the purple poultry facebook group but none of these birds (or eggs) are for sale yet so do not bother him.

Chicken Genetics Calculator
Want to mess around and learn about chicken genetics? Give the genetics calculator a whirl! Here is the advanced version: https://kippenjungle.nl/chickencalculator.html
Here is the simple version: (hint, click crossing over on the right side for the result)
There are also other genetic calulators on the website. They have various degrees of accuracy. But they are a good starting point which is the intention.
Porter's or Franz Lehner's are the only calculators you should go to for any authority on turkeys. I swear they are in a competition to produce the fancier calculator! They're both the experts in their field and both on the cutting edge.
They are sort of the reason I don't go much into turkey genetics, despite turkeys being my favorite animal. I really can't say anything that hasn't been said by them, and turkeys are really only understood by them and I don't really see the different turkey colors often.

(if this is too long please feel free to just do the "upset? I'm not upset" paragraph lol. The warrior cats fandom will thank you!)
"Your quarrel with Brambleclaw has to stop. Too many moons have passed. You have to accept that I'm Brambleclaw's mate, not yours. You can't keep trying to punish Brambleclaw for something that was always meant to be."
"I couldn't care less about Brambleclaw. It's not his fault he fell for a faithless she-cat. I know you think I've never forgiven Brambleclaw for stealing you from me, but you're wrong, and so is every cat that thinks so. My quarrel is with you, Squirrelflight. It always has been."
"All this was moons ago. Ashfur, I had no idea you were still upset."
"Upset? I'm not upset. You have no idea how much pain I'm in. It's like being cut open every day, bleeding onto the stones. I can't understand how any of you failed to see the blood... […] Stay there! I can't believe you didn't know how much you hurt me. You are the blind one, not Jayfeather. Who do you think sent Firestar the message to go down to the lake, where the fox trap was? I wanted him to die, to take your father away so you'd know the real meaning of pain. [...] Brambleclaw saved Firestar then. But he's not here now. He's not here—but your kits are."
"Enough, Ashfur. Your quarrel is with me. These young cats have done nothing to hurt you. Do what you like with me, but let them out of the fire."
"You don't understand. This is the only way to make you feel the same pain that you caused me. You tore my heart out when you chose Brambleclaw over me. Anything I did to you would never hurt as much. But your kits...If you watch them die, then you'll know the pain I felt."
"Kill them, then. You won't hurt me that way. If you really want to hurt me, you'll have to find a better way than that. They are not my kits."

I've hatched and raised several chicks, and this is a FIRST! This guy (assumed male currently) has TWO different colored legs, and is noticeably darker on his left (yellow leg side). I already contacted a chicken genetics writer about this little weirdo, because if you know chickens you know this just doesn't happen. Either he has a weird copy of mottled causing this or there's something stranger happening, we're currently waiting for adult plumage to show up to confirm mottled gene related strangeness or something else! He appears to be out of my mottled cochin hen & blue wheaten Easter egger boy, based on various traits that cause that to be the only mix that makes sense. He is staying with me to follow changes as he grows, stay tuned to find out just how he turns out!

Delaware Blue Hens are so very nearly extinct that no one seems to remember what they are or what they look like. (I actually confused them with Iowa Blues while writing this post, which is a very different chicken. I am deep in the chicken breed lore and knowing who has what and I completely forgot Delaware Blues existed because they are so rare but not on the Livestock Conservacy List because I guess as a strain of gamefowl they don't count?) It would definitely be very tragic if the flock at the university that maintains them (the main breeders of this strain) caught a disease and died because then Delaware might be the first state with an extinct state bird. :/
Tumblr media
Not to mention, there is literally a breed of chicken called the Delaware which is much more well-known.
I guess this chicken is lucky to be a state bird and a team mascot though, because otherwise it would have gone out of commission a long time ago.
Here's a list of all the state birds!

On the Luz, Vee and Hunter homeless in Gravesfield era... I'm just imagining there being like... reports of a wolf in the woods (Vee being responsible and nabbing food for them in a way that won't get them caught for stealing) alongside the reports of a trio of kids living out there alongside maybe a parent... But Camila is more interested about what the heck a wolf is doing out in woods where there haven't been any in centuries (and hasn't realized one of those kids is luz yet) so it taking a poke around to see that's going on (being slightly life ambivalent about it but shh) and then stumbles into where the trio are staying, finding them all snuggled up with Vee in wolf form keeping them warm and acting distinctly non-wolflike and talking. Camila overhearing them talking about totally magical shit and then just having a slightly massive panic when Hunter or Vee calls Luz by her name.
YES YES YES I'M OBSESSED WITH THIS. i love the idea of camila wanting to get to the bottom of the wolf thing from an animal welfare perspective. like, it's pretty common for people to mistake large coyotes for wolves, but not this Many people, and the blurry night trail pics on nextdoor don't look like a coyote at all. did someone just release a 1st gen wolfdog in the woods and call it a day??
(i don't know what connecticut's laws are like re: wolfdogs and crossbred exotics bc every state is different & it's not my area of expertise. camila would Definitely know though.)
camila's heart leaping into her Throat when she sees the "wolf" around kids, and then her hearing it speak and being like "oh, it's a..... costume.....?" a la yesterday's lie, and then she's like. hey. actually what the fuck.
Compels Meeee....

I have chickens and when I first heard of breeds with feathers on their feet, I at first imagined that'd it'd be like grouse feet, just the soft down covering their bodies on their feet making them mittens. What is the truth I'm not so happy about. The large veined feathers look so uncomfortable on their feet, what gene do you think would cause the flight feathers to be on their feet? Did birds common ancestors have them there like microraptor?
I mean, its entirely possible that feathers-on-feet genes remained in birds from a Microraptor-like ancestor, especially since Microraptor wasn't the only dinosaur to have such leg wings (Anchiornis & co have them too). Archaeopteryx doesn't, but it's also likely that the feature was lost quickly. But having feathers on feet would have been retained in those species for which it was useful, and turning back on the feather on feet gene would be expected in those species for which it was possible and beneficial.
The thing about domesticated animals is, humans aren't as good at evolution as just random chance is. So we tend to select for things that are bad or harmful in the process of trying to get the outcomes we want (see: pugs). So, the chickens, which do not have feathers on their feet for a reason, are probably not doing too well with extra feathers on their feet.
But a regulatory gene seems likely. That's what causes most of this stuff. Turning it off and on in different parts of the body.

what’s there not to understand about hypomania? you know when you get overtired, and like a toddler, you get all hyperactive and also want to cry or do Every Fun Thing you can think of and it actually becomes harder to sleep? like as a result of too much overwhelm or being so emotionally exhausted that’s how your body makes you able to cope, the aftereffects of too much adrenaline? just imagine being stuck like that. and every day it triggers itself more, overload of emotional whiplash and energy and you’ve lost all ability to think rationally and you can do anything at this point, because why not? you’ve got nothing left in you to hold back on any idea that could be exciting and stop you from falling into the void where the wiredness you feel has nothing to latch onto to burn off that nervous energy in a positive way, emotionally. for days or weeks or months on end. you don’t need to have ever experienced this fully to extrapolate and be like. yeah. I can see how it would suck eventually to get stuck like that
#at this point I’m begging people to see the overlap with adhd too bc anecdotally it seems like everyone I know also has that#and the overlap with bpd and hpd but I think the main difference is. being stuck in that high energy state. even when the energy turns sad#and bitter and hopeless. it’s essentially just overstimulation from your own brain. gets stuck overstimulating itself to cope maybe?#like i know people say it’s not triggered by life events but they sometimes can trigger it. but imho depression is gonna trigger it too#eventually. anything where everything is Too Much can start the positive feedback loop that’s almost impossible to turn off#which if you don’t know what a positive feedback loop is. means smth triggers smth which goes back and triggers its original trigger#thus getting bigger and bigger in magnitude. it’s like the chicken and the egg. egg makes chicken and chicken makes egg. more egg more#chicken and more chicken more egg. as opposed to a negative feedback loop which by the time there gets enough of smth it stops triggering#making more of it. your body relies on negative feedback loops for smth called homeostasis which is basically keeping everything stable#so obv positive feedback loops are gonna do the opposite of stable. in this case for your energy and your mood#most people are able to sleep better when they’re tired. my hypothesis of hypomania is when being tired makes you less able to rest#and that obviously spirals in on itself. mania would just be an extension of that I guess? but in some people it does happen really fast so#I get the narrative that it’s a chemical imbalance bc it is. but the specific imbalance being the tendency to a positive feedback loop make#more sense to me too. and can be why predictability and external cycles to ground yourself to are so important#there’s also never a 0% chance of you ever having a manic episode btw. anyones brain can theoretically get into this loop it’s just that if#you’re genetically predisposed to bipolar you’re much more likely to! and that’s okay. you can manage it with meds and lifestyle#but it makes sense why lowering stress (which can trigger this cycle) is such an important part of treatment and management#anyway. hopefully I’m not like. horribly horribly wrong or smth. in the end I can only speak for my experience so lmk if I’m missing smth#bipolar awareness#bipolar 2#hypomania#personal mental health tag#neurodivergence#would you believe I was reminiscing about a concert I went to once. and it made me think of all this

That little barred bird is a cockerel (dont know if you know if not- surprise!) you can tell due to the comb growth and the birds feather color. Notice how wide his barring is, basically the thicker white lines. This is likely caused by having two copies of the barring gene which is actually impossible for a hen to have due to it being a sex linked gene. You can see what I mean with the pair below, hens are typically darker.

I now have chickens

The first two don’t have concrete names (I want to call them Flint & Pepper) but the white one is Bill and the orange one is Hester! Grey - Rhondda Blue (although we think we might have been given a Rhondda Rock instead) Speckled - Barred Rock White - Sussex Pont Orange - Welsh Blacktail

please tell the vision you have for spy and scouts ma bc that tag had me dying
I will always and forever believe spy fell for scouts ma because she wasn’t like any woman he’s encountered before. Not because she was all that charming or able to keep up with his own wit, but because she was just. Fucking stupid. shes a bimbo and she beats the shit out of guys who look at her the wrong way at work. He falls in love with her and he’s so embarrassed about it, because she just keeps throwing the worlds worst pick-up lines at him and they keep working . Guy with the biggest ego imaginable falls for the lamest woman he’s ever met.
