CHICAGO - A South Side eatery is celebrating 50 years in business. They're believed to be the oldest running Black-owned soul food restaurant in Chicago.
St. Rest Country Kitchen along 87th Street and Cottage Grove has been a Chicago staple for half a century. The menu boasts a variety of dishes, including turkey legs, short ribs, smothered pork chops, cabbage, black-eyed peas, succotash, and candied yams.
Owner and head chef Daniella Coffey, along with her husband John, inherited the restaurant from her father in 2021 – the late Rev. Larry Hopkins, who founded the eatery in 1972. At that time, the business was facing significant challenges, with $600,000 in debt and foreclosure looming. Tragically, her father passed away just two months later.
Coffey said that within a year, the family managed to pay off the debt, restructure the business, and now they're thriving.
"Great customer service, sanitation and great food. Those are our pillars here and of course faith," Coffey said.
It’s beyond just Soul food – it’s a story of resilience. The restaurant has attracted the likes of NBA legend Michael Jordan.
It’s a family thing, with 77-year-year old matriarch Sophia Hopkins serving as lead waitress. When she’s not singing her southern tunes, she’s making customers feel right at home.
"As soon as you walk through the doors, everyone is family. That’s just how it is down south back in the day," said Angela Chatman, general manager.
Outside the restaurant, Coffey inspires women all over the world to walk in their purpose.
"You don’t need another person to validate you. You have everything that you need in your hands. The only thing left is for you to use it," she said.
The restaurant operates on Fridays through Sundays.

Can you tell me about your alien encounter? Very interested
I wish it was a more exciting story (it was of course very exciting for me to witness it tho) but yes I can tell u. I'm sure I've told it before on here many times but not lately. anyways at about 1 am a couple yrs ago I saw what initially appeared to be two yellow lights hovering around in the alley behind my house while I was out on the deck about to light up a joint (crucially, this would have been my first joint in days-I was not remotely intoxicated at the time). the first thing my mind jumped to in order to explain it was fireflies, but the lights didn't flicker more importantly it was like 10 degrees fahrenheit outside, the middle of a midwestern winter, so that was quickly ruled out. after a few seconds of me watching them they merged into one larger yellow light then disappeared entirely.
then after about 15 seconds of me staring out at the ally in shock, a single red light came zooming towards me, maneuvering over the fence smoothly then shooting right through the yard in my general direction very quickly. once it was about 10ft away from me it disappeared into thin air just as the yellow lights had had. there was no noise the way you would expect from a drone, & though it was nighttime it was bright enough w/the streetlights & porch light for me to see that there was nothing there, so whatever it was hadn't just turned the lights off but had zoomed off so quickly that to my eyes it looked like it disappeared into thin air.
my theory is that they were the small satellites of a mothership that was probably hovering somewhere above bc they were too small to have actually contained aliens. but I know they were not of this world. most ppl I tell just default to the "oh it was drones" despite drones not being silent, able to merge with each other, or able to accelerate to an incredibly quick speed instantaneously. anyways, not the most exciting story in the world but it was rly cool & has been profoundly impactful in my life. I have always been a UFO freak, since I was a kid, so seeing alien tech w/my own eyes is one of the coolest things I've ever experienced
#and who exactly do they think was flying 3 high tech drones outside at midnight in 10 degrees weather on the south side of chicago. idgi#tho i guess that would seem more plausible to most than aliens. but bc of the reasons I specified im convinced#I also just had a feeling#like I just understood once they were gone that I had encountered smth not of this world#asks

one thing i appreciate so much about shameless is that it does a good job of representing what it means to live in a city. so much of popular media focuses on rich people who live in rich cities and it creates this monolithic story wherein everyone who lives in the city is rich and stuck up and evil (?) and hates small towns/businesses and also, for some reason, hates living in the city and envies those very same small towns/businesses (???).
but like. people in the city are people too. they are poor too. people in the city are happy in their city. people in the city have small business and robust communities who all try to help each other through things. people in the city have culture. and family. and history. and legacy. and love. so much love. not everyone cares about the shit rich city people in rich-city-people-media care about. in fact, only the rich-city-people care about that shit, and they're not even the majority in these spaces. typically it's poor immigrants and poc looking for opportunity and a happy life. sometimes they find it.
idk i love shameless's depiction of the city i love the el train i love the neighbors who help a struggling young family steal milk and get telephone access and love them so much. i love the wandering dogs i love the boys sharing a bike i love them all walking each other to school. i love fiona going to debbie's school events and lip tutoring in the slightly nicer area nearby i love ian working in the local tiny convenience store. i love the community that is forged by these struggling young people who don't have a built-in community handed to them. who have had to make a family out of what little they had.
and they live in the city. and it's their home. and they love it.
#shameless#ami rants#sick and tired of the 'rich stuck up city folk' narrative#have you never met a real life person from a city before? do you not realize that poor people also live in cities? and have small businesse#and families and communities???? do you not think they love each other????!!!!?!??!?!?!?!?!!!! do you not think they're ALSO PEOPLE???!?!?!#fuck you#city life#i WILL write an opposite hallmark movie some day mark my words#and BTW#THE GALLAGHERS LOVE THE SOUTH SIDE#THEY LOVE CHICAGO#THEY ARE PROUD OF IT#BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM HAPPY#AND THEY ARE UPSET WITH IT STARTS GETTING GENTRIFIED#IT'S KIND OF A CENTRAL THEME#sick and tired of people assuming misery about. normal people living their normal and multifaceted and boundlessly rich lives.#STOP

The South Side of Chicago isn't the hellscape Fox News, or other bias media outlets, make it out to be. There are very beautiful neighborhoods with charm & character, that are full of beautiful homes such as this. Also, it's safe to walk around too.

lord help me i started watching shameless, about to finish season 1. this show hates women so much. also just the sheer amount of sexual assault played for comedy. it's cool if it happens to men right? like fr why are half the women on this show sexually abusive to their male partners it's so uncomfortable to watch and a prime example of how fucking weird this show is about women. like don't get me wrong, i think it's important to show that men can be and are abused by women. but a) the show consistently plays that shit for laughs to an uncomfortable degree and b) why do so many of the women have to be fucking predators? also fuck kash. step away from the underage boy. anyway it will surprise no one that i believe in fiona supremacy. girlie's just trying her best. and her friendship with v is just immaculate. i love v so much. literally the only woman in the show who is allowed to be sexually dominant without the writers making it weird and abusive (i'm choosing to disregard that episode where she's so horrible to her brother so i can continue liking her). also fiona's relationship with all the kids is adorable, but her relationship with debbie in particular is very buffydawn and i'm so invested. sadly, i've already thoroughly spoiled myself, so i know that shit will get really bad between them and i'm dreading it. might just stop watching before that happens.
#shameless#anyway i'm going to keep watching because i love a good dysfunctional family show#but as someone who's actually lived in the south side of chicago#it really bugs me whenever they go somewhere that's just clearly wrong#like i lived right next to the university of chicago that's not what it fucking looks like#also this show is just way too white#abuse cw
