tw: black+trans death
Tumblr media
from the_yvesdropper on instagram:
our beautiful black trans brother, 35 year old Righteous Torrence "Chevy" Hill, was murdered in Atlanta, GA this weekend.
he went by his nickname 'Chevy' he was originally from Macon, GA. he owned Evollusion, which is a black/ queer owned LGBTQ+ salon in Atlanta that provided and dedicated full service to specializing in hair, nails, barbering and makeup. growing up as young black queer boys/kids, the barbershop experience can sometimes be a tricky space to occupy, this was something that Chevy understood and wanted to cultivate a space of safety where you can also get the affirming look and style you want, and he did exactly that.
Chevy was a beloved son, brother, partner, and father.
one of his last posts that had a photo of himself said :
"if you truly know me, you know i am a humble, modest, private man, that i love my community, i have the love of God in me and will give the shirt off my back to any soul in need, also i never post pictures of myself, legaey give myself credit, that stops today, i am my legacy!"
(a close friend of Chevy asked if i could share more then one photo of Chevy, since he never posted photos of himself and in recent years he got the confidence to want to share more photos and now he won't get the chance to)
Chevy, hey king, hey brother, hey angel, thank you for everything, i lové you, we lové you, i'm so sorry. there are a lot of photographers in heaven who will be able to photograph you as the glorious black trans angel that you are.
there will be a homegoing service/memorial for our brother
there aren't many details about what happened but apparently he was shot by a family member last wednesday, the 28th (at least this article was the one linked in relation to his murder.)
judging by both the IG post and the comments section he was well-loved by many people and those people have many good memories with him and nothing but good things to say. this is a comment that was left by tirajmeansgolden which was hidden by IG for some reason:
I started testosterone in February 2020. I hit this man up at the end of 2019 after numerous Google searches for an LGBT-friendly barber near me (and by near me... he was a good 35-40 minutes from the rural area I was in outside of Atlanta: but when I found out he was a trans man and that his business was the first and only LGBT hair bar, I knew it would be worth the trip). I was a dysphoric mess in his DMs one Sunday. I hated how my hair was growing out. I never had a "masculine" hairstyle before but decided one day I would buzz it all off myself, then allowed it to grow out a bit... I sent him a video and despite him being closed on Sunday, he told me to come through. I got my hair braided and he gave me my first really masculine fade. Explained the different terms. Lined me up. Was asking me about my decision to transition and provided some helpful advice + guidance. I told him how I was a therapist and he was hype and said he talked with a group of trans men and he would love for me to stop by and also give some mental health tips. So whoever said he was humble - wow, what an understatement. Such a community man! Made me feel SO comfortable because barbershops were a source of major trauma and triggers for me. They were such an integral part of my early transition (I just celebrated 4 years later week). And he was such an integral part of the Atlanta Queer community with hosting events like Queer Con. How I found so many other great resources + queer businesses/artists. May you rest in peace, Chevy. You'll be missed. You've made such a different in the lives of countless people. You definitely were living your Purpose + left a legacy behind ...

Recommending some of my favorite rap songs. As a latin american trans woman, I didn't grow up with rap, but I learned to listen to and appreciate it. These are some great songs I think everyone should hear, and hopefully add to their playlists. These are Spotify links, but you can find these songs elsewhere too. My favorites are in blue:
Pop Rap: She's a Bitch by Missy Elliot (1999); Comfortable (ft. Babyface) by Lil Wayne (2003); Savage (ft. Beyoncé) by Megan Thee Stallion (2020); Too Many Nights (ft. Don Toliver & Future) by Metro Boomin (2022); Never Lose Me (ft. SZA & Cardi B) by Flo Mili (2024)
Classic Rap: My Mic Sounds Nice by Salt-N-Pepa (1986); South Bronx by Boogie Down Productions (1987); Welcome To The Terrordome by Public Enemy (1990); Born and Raised In Compton by DJ Quik (1991); When In Love by MC Lyte (1991)
Gangsta Rap: Gimme the Loot by The Notorious B.I.G. (1994); Cloverland (ft. Botany Boyz) by DJ Screw (1996); The Art of Peer Pressure by Kendrick Lamar (2012); Norf Norf by Vince Staples (2015); Tear Gas (ft. Rick Ross & Lil Wayne) by Conway the Machine (2022)

Conscious Rap: Proletariat Blues by Blue Scholars (2006); 4 Your Eyez Only by J. Cole (2016); Blood of the Fang by clipping. (2019); Iman (ft. SiR & JID) by Rapsody (2019); I Love You, I Hate You by Little Simz (2021)
Abstract Rap: Accordion by Madvillain (MF DOOM & Madlib) (2000); Mural by Lupe Fiasco (2015); The Punishment of Sisyphus by Hermit and the Recluse (Ka & Animoss) (2018); Magician (Suture) by Milo (2017); Arugula by Junglepussy (2020)
Jazz Rap: Jazz (We've Got) by A Tribe Called Quest (1991); 93 'Til Infinity by Souls Of Mischief (1993); The World Is Yours by Nas (1994); Yesterday by Noname (2016); Live! from the Kitchen Table (ft. Ghais Guevara) by McKinley Dixon (2023)
Trap: Ridin' N' Da Chevy by Three Six Mafia (1999); Love Don't Live (U Abandoned Me) by Gangsta Boo (2001); Kay Kay by Chief Keef (2012); Digits by Young Thug (2016); Poppin by Rico Nasty (2017)
Experimental Rap: Spiritual Healing by dälek (2002); Persistence by Lil Ugly Mane (2015); Ain't It Funny by Danny Brown (2016); Thug Tears by JPEGMAFIA (2018); Superman That by Injury Reserve (2021)
I strongly recommend checking out other songs by these artists, the albums these songs are from, more songs from these genres and others I didn't include, and to explore everything hip hop has to offer (especially hip hop made by women). Feel free to add any artists and songs I (obviously) missed, that you think deserve more love and recognition, particularly independent music. Enjoy!

“In An Alleyway, Drinking Champagne”
Listening to the slowed down ultra-romantic last few lines of “Paris” and Taylor’s emphasis on the word “champagne” made me think the “Paris” muse might also be the “Champagne Problems” muse.
I always theorized that both songs have Lily as a muse and I’m even more convinced about “Paris” being a Lily song, instead of Joe, after news of the Toe breakup. The Joe songs on “Midnights” seem to have angst, hard times, and even some bitterness (Bejeweled, Labyrinth, The Great War, Sweet Nothing). Whereas “Paris” is one of the few loved up songs on the album.
Some people may say that all the songs on “Midnights” are about Joe at different points during their relationship. Or that “Paris” and “Champagne Problems” are Karlie songs. Below is why I think they are Lily songs (although “One for the money, two for the show” could easily reference the Kaylor “Two for the Show” magazine article).
I did a previous post about why I think “Paris” is about Lily - link. The song, to me, is clearly set in October 2016, the start of the Tily Autumn:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we get to “Champagne Problems,” which I don’t think I’ve covered on the blog before but have always felt it was a Lily song. To me, “Champagne Problems” takes place in the Autumn of 2018, two years after the “Paris” loved up Autumn of 2016.
“Champagne Problems” is a sad song. It starts with “You booked the night train for a reason, so you could sit there in this hurt.” Is this the same train reference from the “Can’t Stop Loving You” performance on BBC1 in 2019 after the Tily breakup?
Now lets introduce Lily’s sister, Aurelia Donaldson. She was papped with Lily, for the first and only time, in London, while Taylor was there on a break from the Rep tour.
Tumblr media
Into the Autumn of 2018, Taylor is still wearing the Victoria’s Secret angel ring. And the diamond eye ring Lily also had.
Tumblr media
“You told your family for a reason, you couldn’t keep it in.”
“Your sister splashed out on the bottle, now no one’s celebrating.”
These lines are juxtaposed with Lily’s sister’s happy engagement party during the Autumn of 2018 which Lily attended in London. Her younger sister was getting married, so marriage might have been on Lily’s mind. (Funny that the person taking the Polaroids at the engagement party was named Tilly!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The end is near . . .
Lily goes to Tokyo for the end of the Rep tour in November. Maybe one final trip as the gf?
Tumblr media
After being in New York at the same time in January 2019, Lily and Taylor stop showing up at the same places and all social media activity between the two ends with Taylor’s birthday posts in 2019. “The Man” is released on Lily’s birthday, January 27, in 2020.
“Your Midas touch on the Chevy door”
A reference to Lily’s famous Vogue shoot named “Midas Touch” for the 2012 London Olympics, where Lily was featured in the Closing Ceremony. (Link)
“November flush and your flannel cure”
A reference to Thanksgiving (November) 2016 at Taylor’s Rhode Island home which Lily attended and Taylor wore flannel.
“This dorm was once a madhouse”
Another reference to Taylor’s Rhode Island home and Rebekah Harkness/The Last Great American Dynasty - “There goes the maddest woman this town had ever seen.” “Women with madness, their men with bad habits, and then it was bought by me.”
I made a joke, “We’ll it’s made for me.”
“Soon they’ll have the nerve to deck the halls”
A reference to Christmas, which comes after Thanksgiving.
Lastly, the “Forever is the sweetest con” chapter of Folklore and Evermore songs was released on Lily’s birthday in 2021. Further proof Lily is one of the breakup muses of Folkmore.

Hi friend! I’m wondering about the process you took to be able to stay in New Zealand because it’s been a dream of mine to move there but it seems really daunting 😭 thank you in advance!
Kia ora e hoa!
Oof, my story is a long and complicated one for sure. Moving countries (no matter where you're heading) is a HUGE choice and no matter how much you prepare, there will always be a learning curve. For me, however, I didn't prepare at all. Not really. That being said, NZ does have A LOT of hoops to jump through and they're REALLY particular about who gets visas (even more so since the pandemic).
But here's my story:
2015: I had visited NZ for a handful of days in 2015 and then shortly after that trip, I happened to meet someone through tumblr who was a kiwi. We started a long-distance relationship from there.
Now, I need to note that I was homeless at that point of my life. I was living in my car, so everything I owned fit inside a compact Chevy Aveo. And when my car got repossessed and I said 'nothing left for me in [readacted]' and packed up those few belongings into two plastic tubs, bought a one way ticket, and flew to Aotearoa (The actual time between losing my car, to considering moving, to pouring all of my savings into airfare, to actually just up and leaving to start a new life across the world, was only about 2 weeks btw. Like I said, ZERO preperation.)
Early 2016: I first came on a 3-month visitor visa. Then I was able to get a partnership visa for a year. When that relationship ended, I had already decided Aotearoa was my forever home and I was ready to do anything necessary to stay here long-term.
2017: I managed another 1-year visa (working holiday visa).
Early 2018: Then by the time that one was ending, I was in a new relationship (with my current partner) but we hadn't been together long enough for them to sponsor me in a partnership visa.
Without any way to get another working visa, I was forced to plan a move to Australia for a year. I had sorted a working holiday visa there, had job prospects, and although I didn't want to leave NZ, I knew it was only a temporary stop over, because I would spend every moment in Aus trying to get back into NZ somehow.
Final days of my visa, 2018: I had already been thrown goodbye parties, I sold what little belongings I'd started to acquire in my two years here, I had my airfare and visa all ready for Aus -- but I was STILL desperately scouring the Immigration NZ website for ANY legal loopholes, any way I could just stay a while longer. And in doing so, I found exactly that. In absolute secret (didn't tell a single soul from fear of getting my hopes up) -- I applied for a nine-month visitor visa.
And to my utter shock -- it worked. I was able to stay.
2018/19: In those 9 months, I ended up moving in with Doom Them and by the time I was nearing the end of my visitor visa, we were able to apply for a partnership visa together. I was granted another one-year visa.
2019: We had to repeat the process. Submitting over 500 pages of documentation that our relationship was genuine, and even then, they still asked for more. Luckily, they eventually granted me another one year visa.
Early 2020: After living in NZ continuously for four years, you are eligible to apply for residency. Because I had a NZ partner, that definitely helped, because at the start of Covid INZ stopped accepting any other type of residency visa applications. I was SO lucky that we applied WAY early this time, because estimated wait times for visa processing were like 10-16 MONTHS
August 2020: I officially became a NZ Resident!!! Which meant I no longer had to apply for Visas. I was granted the privilege of living in NZ for the rest of my life without ever having to apply for visas that may not be granted. The annual stress and uncertainty we faced each time we applied was no more!
August 2022: After being a NZ Resident for 2 years, you can then apply to be a NZ Permanent Resident. That means you can leave and come back to NZ without any issues. It's basically citizenship without the passport.
So that's where I'm at currently! And in August 2025 (5 years after residency is first granted) -- I will finally get to become a NZ CITIZEN!!!! I cannot wait for the day this country becomes my place of citizenship.
It is a LONG and tedious process that requires a TON of work and stress and money (god so much fucking moneeeeyyyyyy) -- but I wouldn't change it for the world.
Because even though I first moved here for a relationship that didn't work out -- I still wound up finding my forever home, my friends, my family, and most importantly, I did find my forever relationship.
