Medusa Ex Makina
Chapter 8: Reconsider the Follower
Rated M for Mature
Warnings: Canon typical misogyny, period accurate misogyny, slapstick violence
Author’s Note: This is it, the finale of Arc 2! Will Makina and Chester ever be on good terms again?! This is a really long chapter. -w-;;
The colors of the dream grew dim as Nathan looked on from the ocean’s bar, if he went closer into the dunes of the beach, he wouldn’t be able to breathe and his voice would be hoarse again. There had to be a way to have his voice reach her. Makina walked closer to the cave by the coast, there. Maybe there was water inside the cave? Nathan swam closer towards the high rock near the entrance and saw a tide pool. It was the perfect entrance point. However it seems the sea had a mind of its own as the faint sound of a piano began to play. Its notes sounded slow and oddly familiar to Nathan, but they seemed out of order; C, D, D#, G, low G, low G#, low A#, and repeat. Suddenly the tides began rolling out, beaching Nathan on shore. His breathing became coarse and stiff, it was happening again. Makina was closing in on the cave, Nathan desperately reached out to her and grabbed onto her ankle. He was so happy, he finally reached her. Or so he thought… Nathan looked up to see that the woman who he thought was Makina, wasn’t her at all. Her eyes were deep red with a large scar over her left, she had an upside down pentagram in her it and long flowing wavy black hair tied into low twin tails. “You shouldn’t be here, traitor.” The woman said. “Now be gone with the tides.” Just as she said, the waves rolled high and grabbed Nathan away from the cave, pulling him back into the sea. “NO!!” Nathan shouted as the ocean reeled him back further away. “MAKINA!!!” Makina turned her head as if she heard her name being called, there was no one there. It must have been the wind. She then faced towards the cave to see the woman Nathan had seen. She was wearing the same tattered red dress as her, only now Makina can clearly see the symbol for the gears clearly on her chest. “My sweet egg, my kin.” the woman sweetly replied, she leaned into her ear. “Your time to hatch is nigh.”
Makina awoke with a sweat, the pounding of her heart thumping irregularly making her breathing uneven. The raven haired rookie looked up at her bedside clock, 1 AM, she sighed. Chester was working poor Makina to the bone for the past 2 weeks. Rewriting lyrics, rejecting ideas left and right, and worst of all were the many conference calls with the label head, Damien Cornickleson about their contractual arrangement. The thought of him made her shudder. It was no use getting back to bed now, she was far too awake. Makina rolled over to her bedside lamp to turn it on. Rubbing her eyes, she carefully got out of bed and walked towards her desk. She quietly put on her hoodie and some baby blue character slippers and walked out of her room door. ‘Maybe some tea would help calm my nerves. Yeah, lavender tea.’ Makina had thought to herself. As she walked past Nathan’s room, she heard a creaking sound. The young singer turned to see Nathan’s door opening and him in a fluffy black and red bathrobe and slippers. “Nathan, what are you doing up?” Makina whispered. Nathan turned to see Makina and scanned her up and down. “Bad dream… sorry do those slippers have my face on them?” The raven haired rookie looked down at her feet and blushed a deep red. “Just pretend you didn’t see them. I uh… misplaced my other ones.” Makina lied through her teeth. “Right… anyway, let’s go to the rec room.” Nathan said, inviting Makina on his midnight snack run. The singer nodded and followed her mentor.
The moonlight’s gentle glow shone high in the sky as Nathan asked a klokateer for some chips, a throw blanket, and tea for Makina. The two sat next to each other on the couch, a relaxing silence filled the air. “Did you have a bad dream too?” The larger man asked as Makina put her feet on the couch to hug her knees, she silently nodded. “What was yours about?” Makina asked as the klokateer put down the requested items, including the throw blanket, placing it in the middle of the two vocalists. Nathan looked off to the side, he never told anyone about the strange dreams with the whale prophet. He should lie or… “Why don’t you tell me yours first.” Nathan requested, he began to unfold the blanket and put it onto his legs. Makina grabbed her tea and sipped it. “I’ve been having the same dream for the last 3 years now. It’s a beach with a wide open ocean, a piano plays a weird song in a cave, and I wake up whenever I walk closer to it.” Makina looked down at her cup with woe, “And then recently, I’ve been hearing voices. Raspy ones and whispers calling my name. There was even a freaky lady but I didn’t recognize who she was. And those kinds of dreams have been happening since I got here.” Makina replied somberly, she put her tea down and curled up into herself once more. Nathan’s facial expression grew weary as he placed another chip into his mouth. He quietly placed a hand on her shoulder and opened up the blanket. Makina began to huddle underneath, she reached out for his hand and held it tightly.
“What about your bad dream?” Makina asked cautiously. The hulking man paused for a moment, grabbing another chip from the bag and chowing down. The dream he woke from sounded exactly like hers, but from an opposite perspective. Nathan didn’t want to be too blunt, that would probably freak her out. Just a little lie wouldn’t hurt right? “It was about a beach too,” Nathan began, “except there were freaky monsters and stuff. Like zombie mermaids and the ocean was filled with uh… blood and guts. And they were singing about eating my balls or some shit.”
“Damn, that makes my nightmare sound like a cake walk in comparison.” Makina winced. Nathan sighed, “Yeah, way scarier than an empty beach.” He rubbed Makina’s arm, she felt safe in her mentor’s company, all of the insanity of the night terrors and issues before they met seemed to melt away. “Nathan?”
“Yeah kid?”
“Would I get in trouble if I punched Barker in the nards if he pissed me off again?” Makina asked with conviction. Nathan chuckled at his protoge’s violent thought, “Only if it’s for a really good reason, then you can. Otherwise don’t be a dumbass.” Makina smiled, her eyes half closed and her body started to get far too relaxed. Nathan scooped the raven haired singer up into his arms and began carrying her towards her room like a child sleepy from a car ride. He gingerly laid her down. “Rest up Medusa.” Nathan whispered as he tucked Makina into bed. The brutal man silently hoped no one saw him be soft towards his protege.
XxxX
The early afternoon came and Makina went straight to work, having to skip breakfast for sleeping in so late. Chester was more than annoyed at Makina’s lack of gusto and willingness to work. They were down to the last thing on their to do list for the day, recording a new demo for a single. Makina hadn’t had the inspiration to write since Chester’s new schedule had been throwing her off her creative juices. “Really Medusa? Nowt to show for the label?”
“Well I would have fucking time to write, if someone wasn’t taking up all of it.” she sneered. “Then perhaps Dethklok should give some back, eh?!” Chester retorted. “I was talking about the gazillion meetings you put on me, seriously why do I have to sit in with that CEO jackoff?” Makina hissed. “That ‘jackoff’ is doing all they can to kick off your bloody solo career!” Chester replied, Makina crossed her arms, “Successful my ass, all they want is a bottle blonde babe to sing trashy pop songs.” she mumbled under her breath.
Chester opened the door to find Murderface sitting on the sofa in a strange blue jumpsuit, goggles, and dish gloves. He was holding a vacuum cleaner hose attached to an oxygen tank and a trash bag. “Murderface, why are you cosplaying a sewage plumber?” questioned Makina with an eyebrow raised, “It’s not a costume, it’s protection over your ghost thing. I don’t wanna get chained up like Charles- I mean, Chester over here. Sorry ‘bout the name mix up, we had a guy with a similar name to yours and… I’ll shut up now.” Murderface sat back down. Just then Pickles walked into the room, “Hey, mind if I watch- …Murderface, you look stupid.”
“Well don’t come crying to me if you get chained up by Makina’s ghost powers!” Murderface shouted. Soon Nathan and Skwisgaar entered the studio, “Alrights Medusas, lets sees some- oh… what kinds of fashions criminals amst you?”
“Fuck off Skwisgaar, it’s ghost protection!” Murderface shouted. “You look like a mechanic that has no clue what the fuck their doing.” Nathan commented, Makina tried to stifle her laughter. “Ja, yous looks likes a confuseds scubas divers who amst a cleanings a hostels.” added Skwisgaar. “No wait, he’s an astronaut that came to wash moon rocks.” Pickles chortled. “Guys, stop making fun of him.” Makina butted in. “Thank you Medusa.” Murderface replied. “He’s obviously dressed as if Micheal Myers was a high school janitor.” Makina stated with a smirk. Murderface placed the goggles over his eyes and pushed his back further into the sofa. “Fuck you guys, if a ghost pops out and posesses Medusa don’t say I told you so.” the bassist pouted.
“Mother’s meeting over? Yes? Good. Come on Medusa, get in the booth.” Chester snapped his fingers in Makina’s face. “Fuck, alright! Sheesh, snippy ass producer manager.” Makina got herself situated in the recording booth and put on a set of headphones. “Quiet in the stands. That means you Murderface.” adjured Chester. Murderface gave an exasperated shocked expression before silently flipping the bird behind Chester’s back. Makina covered her mouth, holding back more of her laughter. The welshman pushed a button on the mixtable and began instructing Makina to begin whenever she’s ready. The vocalist took a deep breath in and signaled that he could play the instrumental. Chester pressed another button and a track began to play. The hum of a choir and gothic sounding bells began to ring through, and the bass line began to play along with a gentle piano in E Minor. Makina began to sing the first verse, really feeling the vibe of the song. Soon the lights began to flicker, the track became louder, as if she was singing in an amphitheater with a crowd of a thousand people. Out came the chains by the chorus and they swiftly latched themselves onto Makina and Chester, forming the muzzle and shackle again. Murderface tried to reach for the on button to his vacuum, but before he could make a move with his makeshift ghost gear, Nathan pushed Murderface’s chest back into the couch. Something was wrong with the ghost aura.
The aura kept flickering like a faded neon light until it completely dissipated. Makina raised her hand up to signal to her producer to stop the track, Chester tapped the pause button. “Medusa, we can’t afford to have a break right now.”
“I don’t want a break, I’m done for today. The song sucks and you need to remix it. I can’t stand that weird synthetic choir and you edited my lyrics without my knowledge!” she squeaked. “Oh fuck.” Nathan said under his breath. If there was one thing that Nathan knew as a lyricist that a vocalist’s words were their own thoughts and feelings flowing through a melody. Makina aggressively took her headphones off. “I’m clocking the fuck out. Fix the fucking track and use my original lyrics.” she demanded as she began to storm out of the recording studio. “Come on, you’re seriously packing it in?” Chester jeered, “Well then, why not just throw your only solo career chance in the shitter! It’s obvious you were never up for it in the first place.”
Makina gripped the door handle, fueled with rage she swiftly turned around, sped right to Chester, and punched him square in the balls. “Throw my CHANCE!? I am not throwing in the towel because I’m a stubborn motherfucker that doesn’t know when to quit. But you know who did? You did! I can forgive Syd and Gerard, because at least they were able to explain themselves and communicate to me their ilks. I did everything to reach you. But you ignored my calls, texts, and emails. So what does that tell me? You gave up on Lycan RIOT. You left Lycan RIOT the minute we were backstage of Doom-opolis. I know it’s not about me, it never is. But you left me, you broke your promise that we’d be in this together. And now you come crawling back into my life, to berate me on a dream you gave up on?! You’re a fucking coward Barker, you have no bite! Eat shit and good fucking day!” Makina slammed the door behind her and walked off with frustration in her eyes. The other members of Dethklok looked at Chester’s look of concentrated frustration. “Ooh, she chewed you the fuck out.” Pickles commented. “She’s lost her bloody marbles! How the hell am I the one getting bashed over it?!” the producer complained, Chester put a hand to his temple and began drawing circles into it with his fingertips. “Honestly, what got her fucking knickers in a twist?”
“Didn’t you hear a single fucking word she said?” Nathan answered back, questioning the manager, “I don’t think I have to spell it out for you.” The frontman sighed. “Oh, please do by all means! That cunt clearly can’t!” cried Chester. “Hey, don’t call her a cunt. I only get that privilege!” Murderface yelled back, Pickles side eyed the bassist. “Whys evens bothers withs hers if you ams goings to calls hers nastiness?” Skwisgaar irritatingly asked as he fidgeted with his guitar.
There was a silent pause, a moment of realization. It had dawned on him like a caveman learning how to invent the wheel. These googolplexian famous douchebags had a fucking point, why even bother with Makina at all if this was how they were going to be working with one another for the rest of their lives? Has his own academic ego and goal oriented ambitions blinded him from the most important friendship in his life? He never considered how much Makina had meant to him. She wasn’t his lover or a close companion by any means… what were they?
XxxX
It was the new millennium, the year 2000 at Existrace high school, and 4 students sat in a classroom that used to be the music room. “Alright, let’s see here…” A teacher began, he pushed his glasses up to see the ledger more clearly. “Sydney Perseus, you kicked our star quarterback in the groin out of aggression during a food fight. First offense, don’t do it again. Chester Barker, another first offender. And from long time school ditcher, Gerard Desdemona. For starting said food fight, this isn’t “animal house” you dolts. And Miss… Mickey na Gordon…”
“It’s ‘Mah-kina Gorgon’ sir.”
“Whatever, you’re very close to being in the ISS young lady. You better behave yourselves. Now I need to step out to grab something. I expect you all not to get into too much trouble.” The teacher warned as he got up to leave the room. A small click was heard as he locked the door from the outside and walked away. Gerard leaned back in his chair staring up at the ceiling, high as a kite. Chester placed his head in his hands as he bent forward in his seat. The one called Sydney brushed through their half red and black hair vigorously. It was frizzing up with the heat inside the room. “I shouldn’t even be here!” they complained, “I was totally innocent!”
“Pssh, yeah right.” Makina replied, as she took out the red scrunchy from her hair. Her long raven locks fell comfortably to her bum and she began bunching it back up to remake her high ponytail. “It’s true, I was just defending myself! He threatened to throw me through the goal post.” Sydney retorted. “And he was pissing about with you because…?” Chester questioned as he slowly lifted his head up. “He wasn’t, Jordan Thompson was pushing around a classmate of mine from 5th period. You know that guy with the Abyssal Oblivion lunchbox?”
“I think I know him.” chimed Gerard, “Benny Oxford, the one with the mole on the side of his neck. I slide him Faygos in exchange for those expensive as fuck fruit snacks.”
“Yeah, anyway I told that meathead to back off. He threatened me and I kicked him in the dick.”
Makina couldn’t help but snicker at her peers. “Are you snickering? I ain’t done owt wrong.” protested Chester. The punkish girl cleared her throat, “Sorry but that’s not self defense. That’s the ‘talk shit get hit’ method. I should fucking know, it’s my specialty.”
“Oh, so we’re moving on to cockfighting then?” asked the young welsh. Makina shook her head, “‘Cockfighting’ is for petty people. I was in what they call ‘a sophisticated romp of fisticuffs’. In other words, beating her ass to a pulp for talking shit about Dethklok.” The others looked at her as if she had grown 3 heads, eyes widened in bewilderment. “…I beg your pardon?” Chester stated as the others were still slack jawed. “You’re a Dethklok fan?! Get the fuck out!”
“Nuh-uh, I know every song off of their first gig mix at the Depths of Humanity! And I can prove it!” Makina said in a sharp tone. Gerard sat up straight in his chair while Sydney scooched thier’s closer. Chester crossed his arms and leaned up against the wall behind Makina’s seat. “Alright, what’s the ditty of the herring cannery called?” Chester quizzed. “Easy, that’s the 4th track and it’s called ‘Caught in a Sawfish’.” she replied in confidence. The dirty blonde haired boy raised an eyebrow, “Beginner’s luck. Alright, here’s one; Skwisgaar Skwigelf is from which country?”
“Sweden. Come on, this is child’s play!” Makina scoffed as she smirked at her peers. “Fine. Here’s a spicy one for yer then. Who came before Toki Wartooth, and what kind of guitar did he play?” The other teens eagerly leaned in to hear her answer, Makina crossed her arms thinking hard and then slyly smirked. “Magnus Hammersmith and he played a Gibson Les Paul with a custom glossy ebony fingerboard.”
“Bullshit, how the ‘eck do you know that?!” Chester shouted. “I’m not a fucking poser that’s how.” the rebellious girl responded, crossing her legs smugly. Chester fell back in his seat stunned, unable to make a single retort back at her.
“Shit… You really know your stuff uh, Makina right?” Gerard asked, extending a hand. “Maybe we should call you Medusa, ‘cause you seem to have turned that British boy to stone.” Sydney said playfully sticking out their tongue. “I’m Welsh you pricks, look at a map once in a while.” Chester pouted. Makina put her hand under her chin, “Medusa… that’s a badass nickname. Thanks-”
“Syd, just call me Syd.”
“Syd, got it! Wonder when that teacher’s coming back?” Makina asked as she leaned to look at the clock. It was 12:30 pm, way past the time they were supposed to be let out. “Shit, only 20 minutes till the new Dethklok show starts!” Chester exclaimed. “Wait, that’s today?!” Gerard shouted. “Oh fuck, I forgot to set the channel at my place!”
“Crazy idea, what if we went to my place to watch the premiere.” Makina suggested. “Are you sure your parents wouldn’t mind?” Syd asked cautiously. “I never met my mom and my dad’s dead.” Makina stated, an awkward silence filled the air as she stood up to walk towards the window on the other side of the classroom. “Chillax, my pseudo-dad’s alive and he’s out till 5. Anyway, you fellas wanna break out of this joint?” Makina asked as she went to pick the lock of the window. “Pseudo-dad?” Chester questioned, raising an eyebrow. “God stop asking so many fucking questions. Do you wanna break out of detention or not!?” Makina yelled, extending a hand to him. Chester quietly nodded and followed Syd and Gerard out the window, escaping the confines of the stuffy classroom.
“Woo, freedom at last!” Gerard shouted as he went to slap Chester on the back. The dirty blonde swallowed the wrong way and cleared his throat. “Nice work ‘Dusa!” Syd said gleefully, Makina hi-fived them. The 4 teens began their short journey towards Makina’s place. “Sooner or later, you’ll want them in the band.” Chester uttered sarcastically as he rolled his eyes. “Barker, that’s a great idea!” Gerard exclaimed, Syd and Makina looked at him confused. “A band you say?” Syd asked, tilting their head with curiosity. “Like Dethklok?”
“No no it’s more uh… ‘punk’.” Chester stated with air quotes. “I thought we agreed that we’d try the more emo approach?” Gerard interjected. “Well I’ve considered it.” Chester replied. “What about instruments, who plays what?” Makina asked as the 4 of them stopped near a crosswalk. “Barker plays drums and I do… everything else.” Gerard replied.
“What are you trying to recreate, the White Stripes? You can’t be working poor Gerard to the bone!”
“It’s no biggie Medusa, really.” Gerard said, scratching the back of his head. “Besides we can’t fit more than our equipment and 2 people in my garage.”
The clouds in the sky began blocking the afternoon sun as the delinquent teens inched closer to Makina’s home. “Well if you let me in your band I can lend you a space.”
“Ooh, and I can help with mixing!” Syd interjected. Chester face palmed himself, “Syd can join, they’re alright. But not you, ‘Dusy.”
“Oh ho, shortening the nickname huh. You must be catching feelings aren’t you?” Makina teased, Chester sneered at her, blushing with embarrassment. They stopped in front of a hard rock bar that had a closed sign, Makina dug into her pocket to look for something. Chester immediately grabbed the raven haired rebel’s shoulder. “Are we wantin’ to break into a fuckin’ pub ‘ere?!”
“I live here chucklenuts, my pseudo-dad’s the owner.” Makina replied as she found what she was looking for, a small rose gold key. She unlocked the door letting the others in, turned on the lights, and then locked the door behind her. In front of them was a small stage, lights, and a shoddy little microphone setup. Along the wall was a bar to the left of the room, to the right was a set of tables and chairs stacked up. There were photographs on the wall with posters of all sorts of bands that had visited the small bar. Makina hopped onto the stage and walked to a door that read ‘Employees Only’. The teens followed her into a small 2 bedroom apartment. There was a bay window seat, a couch, a small kitchenette, and large stacks of vinyl records and a boombox with lots of CDs. “TV’s in my room, just don’t track any mud, and if my pseudo-dad comes home you best be running out through the fire escape.”
Chester’s heart sank, a bit of him felt bad that she lived in such a small place, on top of that her parents were gone. But on the other hand… “Tell yer wot Makina, you can join if Mr. ‘pseudo-dad’ lets us use the bar space for practice.” Makina’s eyes lit up as she accidentally bent the antenna on her TV in the wrong direction. “Really?!”
“Yeah, I mean, what can you do?”
“I’m a vocalist, I’ve always wanted to be one like my old man!”
“Who is your dead dad Makina?” Syd asked as they sat on the foot of Makina’s bed. Makina pointed at a framed poster in her bedroom. It was partially ripped in half leaving only 2 band members present. “Your dad was in The Abyssal Oblivion?!” Gerard shouted as he pushed his shaggy hair out of his eyes. “Yeah, but you better keep that to yourselves. Ah here we go, it’s starting!” Makina exclaimed, the 4 teens huddled in front of the tv to watch the Dethklok Minute premiere.
XxxX
Maybe that’s all she ever was to him… a pitiful means to an end. Chester recalled many of the private moments she had shared with her. The way she kissed him, the way she made him laugh, the way she felt in his arms. Since the day they met all he caused her was grief, never telling her why. “I’ll go talk to her.” He answered firmly. The welshman swiftly walked out of the room to search for his vocalist. Knowing Makina, there was one other place she could have gone in this entire death metal castle. And wouldn’t you know it, he was right on the money. Gingerly opening her bedroom door, Chester sat on Makina’s bed. There was a large lump underneath the covers and small whimpers. “‘Dusy?”
“Fuck off.” she answered with a sharp whine. “‘Dusy, a quick chin wag?”
“Oh now you wanna talk?” Makina sniffled, “What took you so long?” Chester looked down at Makina’s blanket cocoon, her makeup looked smeared and she was cuddling her Skwisgaar plush under the covers. The look of her saddened face was just like how they were long ago. “Makina,” Chester said solemnly. Makina’s ears perked up, this was the first time in the history of their lives did he ever utter her name, her real name. “Makina… I’m… I’m sorry. For, y’know, all the bullcrap I put yer through.” Makina sat up, attempting to wipe her eyes. “I shouldn’t have kept you in the dark like I did. We both know you were just as important to Lycan RIOT as you were to me.” Chester reached for her hand and hesitantly, she held it. He took a deep breath. “I know we can’t change the past. And I know I’m the dick for breaking our promise. So… I hope we can have a chance to start over?” Makina didn’t hesitate and hugged her manager tightly. Chester was surprised and hugged her back, the feeling was warm and nostalgic. “I’m sorry for being an asshat to you, I know you’re just doing your job and shit. But I-”
“Yeah I know.” the producer said as Makina was embraced again in another tight hug.
Chester placed his forehead onto hers, “Starting now, I swear to be more open like a good book.”
“Good, because now I wanna know something.” Makina moving away from Chester as she slowly got out from under the covers to put the Skwisgaar doll away. “How’s your wife Tanja?” Chester hesitated for a response, but he kept his word and spoke the truth. “She’s pregnant, 7 months along.” Makina slammed her closet door in surprise and ran to his side. “YOU MEAN YOU-”
“Yep. So now we should-”
“BEANPOLE FINALLY GOT SOMEONE TO-”
“MEDUSA!” Chester shouted, the raven haired rookie backed away. “Sorry… Do you know what she’s gonna have?” Chester shook his head, “We discussed names, she really doesn’t like Lynne much.”“Well what about Renee, it’s pretty neutral.” Makina said with a smile, Chester patted her back. “S’pose so. Anyway, perhaps we should get back to the studio and take another crack at it.” Makina shook her head, “Redo the mix and we record tomorrow.” Chester smiled, “Alright then, boss.”

Baronet -> Coal-miners -> Royalty
“A time may yet come, perchance, when a descendant of one of these simple artizans may arise, not unworthy of the Conyers' ancient renown; and it will be a gratifying discovery to some future genealogist, when he succeeds in tracing in the quarterings of such a descendant the unsullied bearing of Conyers of Durham." Sir Bernard Burke, 1861.
In 1861 the genealogist and publisher of Burke’s Peerage Sir Bernard Burke, in his book "Vicissitudes of Families", dedicated a chapter to the “The Fall of Conyers" which concludes with the following: "Magni stat nominis umbra! The poor Baronet left three daughters, married in very humble life: Jane, to William Hardy; Elizabeth, to Joseph Hutchinson; and Dorothy, to Joseph Barker, all working men in the little town of Chester-le-Street. A time may yet come, perchance, when a descendant of one of these simple artizans may arise, not unworthy of the Conyers' ancient renown; and it will be a gratifying discovery to some future genealogist, when he succeeds in tracing in the quarterings of such a descendant the unsullied bearing of Conyers of Durham."
Sir Thomas Conyers, was the 9th and last Baronet Conyers of Horden Hall. While a gentleman at birth, he was reduced to poverty and resided at the Durham Workhouse. His pride made him reject financial aid from his distant relatives, among them his second cousin Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore, whose funeral he attended at Westminster Abbey in 1800. At the time she was one of the wealthiest women in England and is an ancestor of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons, the late Queen Mother.
His later years were made somewhat more comfortable at the aid of another distant cousin, George Lumley-Saunderson, the 5th Earl of Scarborough who provided him with a small house. Sir Thomas died a pauper on 15 April 1810. His surviving children, three daughters had married working men in the little town of Chester-le-Street, County Durham. As if from a Thomas Hardy novel, his daughter Jane married a man named William Hardy.
For five generations Sir Thomas Conyers descendants would work as labourers, and often in coal mines once owned by distant ancestors and now owned by the Bowes-Lyon family. By the sixth generation his descendant Robert Harrison, a carpenter left his family still working in the coal mines to seek opportunities in London. There he married and had a daughter, Dorothy who married a builder named Ronald Goldsmith.
The early years of Dorothy and Ronald’s marriage and their children's upbringing were spent in a comfortable council house, providing the security needed to buy their own home. Their daughter, Carole, became a flight attendant and married a young flight dispatcher, Michael. They settled in Berkshire and spent a few years in Jordan, working for British Airways, before returning to Berkshire, where Carole started her own business at her kitchen table.
Almost ten generations and 201 years after Sir Thomas Conyers died a pauper, his descendant Catherine Middleton married Prince William of Wales on 29 April 2011.

hmm okay to round up some current disparate tmagp thoughts into one place:
-> the fear taxonomy: I'm not quite sure where I sit on the desires theory currently, but I think it's worth noting that while both of our case subjects from the first episode were explicitly afraid of the spooky things happening to them, none of the rest have been, and I think it's really interesting that tom the horror blogger's whole problem was that he was so desensitized to fear it made him foolhardy (the exact thing our lovely ms georgina barker overcompensated so hard to avoid). yes, you could pick probably any archives statement and try to frame it around a desire instead of a fear because that's how character motivations work, but I don't think it's wrong to point out that since episode two all of our subjects have been remarkably chill about the Horrors happening to them. I'm not totally onboard with the desires at time of writing, I think there a few details that don't quite line up with that idea, but I'm still keeping a pin in the theory.
I also don't think it's wrong to point out that things like "music so hauntingly beautiful it makes a crowd tear itself to bloody pieces" and "paranoia and eye-related gore popping up in conjunction to the magnus institute" are familiar scenarios and seem to match up to the entities as we know them. those are very specific motifs connected to very specific types of Horrors and I think saying it's random coincidence that we're seeing them again is a bit of a weird take.
-> norris, chester, and augustus. in-universe, these voices appeared out of nowhere about a year ago, and one of the central mysteries set up so far is "what the hell is up with all this weird tech?", I think it is a perfectly reasonable assumption to think these voices are part of the mystery and not just an excuse to get jonny and alex's voices in the show. if that were the case, why would there be a third voice? yes, this podcast is meant to be comprehensible to new listeners, but I don't think that rules out any direct ties to archives, I think part of the function of having fresh protagonists who don't know anything about the events of archives is that, if the audience needs to learn anything about the first show, they can learn it along with a viewer-surrogate character.
personally, I think it very unlikely that the voices are literally jon, martin, and jonah's actual consciousnesses trapped in computers, I think those characters' stories are done and there's something funkier happening here (neither them nor not them but a secret third thing, yknow), but dismissing any idea that the voices are related to the characters, again, feels like a weird take.
-> gwen bouchard. honestly I feel like the way the production team have treated gwen's connection to elias vs the way some fans have come at is kind of illustrative. I've seen a couple of groups of fans get weirdly smug about the idea that we don't know gwen is related to elias, her name could just be a red herring, meanwhile on the tmagp post-launch stream everyone there took it as obvious that gwen is a bouchard and thus related to elias. not everything is red herrings, guys. it would be an extremely weird writing move to set up a bunch of stuff with clear links and parallels to archives and have it all be meaningless.

Medusa Ex Makina
Chapter 7: The Witch's Brindle
Rated M for Mature
Warnings: Canon Typical Misogony, Minor PTSD Flashback (Toki)
Author’s Note: So I took a long hecking break from writing and finally came back with a vengeance. More mystery and a bit more character relationship building.
The smell of the ocean breeze brought Makina to a familiar setting, she had this dream a million times over. It was an island with a small coastal cave and a wide open ocean. She could hear the singing of whales and feel the grains of sand between her toes. The singer wore what looked like a velvet red dress that was ripped to knee length with rips and fly away threads. In every version of this dream, she could hear the sound of a piano. It played a sweet yet somber tune, its melody was mesmerizing as she began walking towards it. The sweet song came from the cave, but something felt different. For the first time in this strange recurring dream, she could hear a voice call out for her name. It was raspy, as if it was choking on something. But as she turned around to see who it was, she woke up. Makina sat up in her bed, her heartbeat began speeding up in irregular beats. ‘That dream is starting to get too real,’ she thought to herself. The raven hair singer opened her bedroom window shade, the bright morning sun sparkled down on her. She prayed that Murderface had kept his promise.
As she walked down to the kitchen she passed by a familiar klokateer, the one she nicknamed Sango. Makina tapped on their left forearm and confessed to him what she had done the night before. “Just don’t tell anyone about it, ok? I just feel a bit guilty about it all.”
“Don’t fret my lady, my lips will be sealed.” Sango placed their hand on top of Makina’s shoulder reassuring her. The klokateer gently pushed her out of the way so as to get on with their day. Sango looked back at her and gave a tiny half hearted wave. Makina nodded and anxiously began to make a pot of coffee. She knows what she did last night was far too drastic, even for her. Makina knew she could trust Toki with keeping such a secret, but the thought of Nathan getting mad at her was something she feared. Makina looked up to Nathan, as a fire that burned bright and warm in the darkest of times. His bellowing voice and mere stature gave Makina a sense of security. The image of his brutally disappointed face terrorized her mind. Her entire career, no, her entire life would be over before anything could begin to prosper.
The sound of the drip coffee maker’s pump interrupted her thoughts, as it began making a gurgling noise signaling that the water was finished filtering through. Makina stood on her tiptoes and opened up the top cupboard. She couldn’t see everything that was in there, however a small black mug with the klokateer’s gear insignia caught her eye. Makina began to stretch up as much as she could, but was caught off guard to see Skwisgaar’s arm reach for the mug and handed it to her. Makina’s grip on the mug was loose as the ceramic almost slid out of her fingers. “Oh… Uh, thanks.” Makina said, as a light shade of pink flushed her cheeks. “Nexts times justs asks fors a steps stools.” Skwisgaar replied as he grabbed another mug off the shelf. He poured himself a cup of the coffee she had made and began to leave the kitchen. Makina silently hoped that he liked the brew, as she began to pour her own mug. After finding some leftover sugar packets and powdered cream, she searched for a teaspoon to stir with.
Her mind began flooding with the strangeness of her dream. Who on earth was that calling to her? She found the spoon and began to mindlessly stir her coffee. “I mean I’ve never heard voices like that in my dream… but it sounded familiar…” Before she could ponder it further, Chester walked into the kitchen. It was oddly refreshing to see him so roughed up and not put together. He stared darts at Makina before pouring a cup of coffee. The raven haired singer sunk lower into her seat, bracing herself for getting chewed out like old times. “Morning, Medusa.” Chester said in a bitterly professional tone as he sat next to her. Makina looked into his eyes, his cold gaze and unfeeling attitude caught her off guard. “Morning.” she sheepishly replied.
"Got a busy day today."
“Since when?”
"Since today o' course. Even if you still haven't signed the contract. I want to get you started on recording, or at least writing your first one." Chester noted as he sipped his coffee. He brushed his fingers in his hair, straightening out the stray hairs. Makina squinted at him with suspicion, Chester was behaving as if yesterday’s altercation didn’t happen at all. “Hey… about last night I-”
"Eh, don't worry about it. I knew that Dethklok would be a right bunch before I walked through the door. No wonder you fit right in." he sneered as he stood up from his seat with the mug in hand. “I’ll see you in the studio in 10 minutes.” Chester declared as he passed by Pickles and Nathan. The Welshman gave a nod to them as he left for the studio. Nathan nodded back as he saw Makina with her head on the table.
“Rough morning Medusa?” Questioned Pickles in a playful tone. Makina picked her head up, “I’m fine, just need a little perk up.” she lied as she took a sip of her now lukewarm coffee. “Want a bit of booze in your coffee kid?” Nathan asked cautiously, Makina nodded and he went into the cabinet. He grabbed the first bottle he could find, an irish whiskey and poured a bit into her mug. Makina took a sip as Nathan gently petted her hair, Makina tried to hide the corners of her mouth turning up with the mug. She felt like a little kid being soothed by her father. “Did Barker say something to you?” Pickles asked, “No, he’s just a fucking stiff robot. I gotta get ready for some studio stuff. If you wanna watch me flounder, I’ll be in the booth in 5.” Makina jokingly said as she stood from her seat and began exiting the kitchen. Nathan watched as Makina tensed up when she exited the kitchen. Something must have been plaguing her mind.
XxxX
Makina sat on the stool inside of the booth, as Chester put on his headphones. He turned a few knobs and flipped some switches. Curious as to see Makina sing again, Nathan quietly entered the studio and sat on the sofa. "Right, ready for today's sesh?” Makina hesitantly nodded and Chester pressed the record button. ‘How were they going to record without an instrumental track?’ Nathan thought. Makina took a deep breath and began belting out a series of words, singing in a way that Nathan couldn’t understand. Then the room got darker, it was happening again. The green aura, the ghost chain birdcage, the mysterious instrumental arrangement that began flooding the room. ‘How could Barker not see what’s happening around us?!’ Nathan shouted in his mind. The ghost chains began to inch closer to Chester, slowly wrapping around his neck till a shackle formed cuffing him. Nathan watched on, quietly grabbing his neck to make sure none of the chains slithered toward him. But something new began to occur, as she belted out the remaining notes of the chorus, a set of chains wrapped around her head and magically forming a dog muzzle with a chain that connected to Chester’s neck shackle. Nathan’s eyes widened with a sting of dread, in his mind he was desperately trying to connect the dots as to what was happening in front of him and why.
"Stop, stop now!" Chester commanded, she begrudgingly did as she was told and in a cartoonish puff of smoke, all of the illusions vanished. "What was that? A G-flat for somethin'?"
“Yeah, and?”
"And you're flat, AND off rhythm by a few beats at least!" Chester said with a cocky tone, Makina rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. “Oh here we go, this is the asshat I know. Always stopping me before I reach the climax of a song!”
“I wouldn't NEED to stop you if you were singin' it right! Try again! From the bridge!” Chester instructed. Makina gave an exasperated sigh, made an exaggerated shaking motion with her hands brushing off her frustration, and with a deep breath she began once again. All at once, Nathan was reminded of the fight the two had backstage at Doom-opolis. They were passionate, but with two strong personalities that can counterbalance each other. The hulking vocalist could easily see why the band structure didn’t work out too well for them.
There was a slight creaking sound near the door, Nathan turned to see the other members of Dethklok wanted to see Makina sing again. He put a finger to his mouth and signaled the boys to walk in without disturbing the performance. The somber melody of Makina’s vocals were hypnotic, but then the room grew darker again. “Do we need to get a guy to fix the lighting?” Murderface whispered. “No the lights are- Oh wait, you haven’t seen the thing Makina does.” Pickles commented softly. “Whats things?” Toki asked in a hushed tone. The two clueless members looked back up at Makina, the green aura began spreading and the chains appeared once again. Murderface pushed his back against the sofa, tensing his muscles at the sight of the muzzle surrounding Makina’s mouth. Toki on the other hand felt a sense of panic, his heart was racing faster than what felt like an inhuman speed, the cage chains that surrounded Makina made him want to jump out of his chair and scoop her out of there.
"Stop, stop..." Chester commanded once more, the lights and glowing chains disappeared once again. "Emphasis before the chorus. And why'd you go off-key? Are you showin' off or somethin' since they turned up? That's a genuine question coz I don't even know.” Chester remarked as he typed out some notes on his phone. “Ugh, yes it was ‘intentional’ doctor know-it-all. Fucks sake. You know what, I’m gonna take a break.” Makina stated as she aggressively ripped her headphones off of her head and tossed them onto the stool. She stomped her way out and swung the recording booth door wide open and marched right past the others to the studio exit, she took one look at Chester while sucking air through her teeth. She held her tongue and instead slammed the door on the way out. Dethklok looked at Chester who was unphased by her outburst. He put 3 fingers in the air, counting down to one and pointed towards the recording booth window to hear a muffled scream and very loud bang on the studio door. The bash on the door startled Toki a little bit. "Sheesh... is she a singer or a banshee?" Chester placed an elbow on the console and leaned his head into it. “Uh… I’ll go check on her.” Nathan said as he stood up. “Me too.” Murderface chimed in. Toki also followed close behind.
XxxX
Makina was pacing back and forth while mumbling obscenities, scratching her head and biting her arm, screaming into it. “Makis ams yous goods?” Toki called out, she turned around with her forearm in her mouth, forming little streams of blood where her teeth were holding her flesh. Makina had frustrated tears coming from her face. “Amf fife.” She mumbled through her biting. “Let go.” Nathan asked firmly, Makina obeyed with seething rage in her eyes. “I’m not letting you go back in till you calm down. Now sit.” Makina sat on the cold hard ground, holding her knees to her chest. “Why ams you treatings her like she’s a puppys?” Toki asked as he sat down on the ground next to Makina. “Because she’s a fucking bitch that’s why, right Nathan?” Murderface jeered. Makina held her knees tighter, her body tensed up. “No, she just… I really don’t know how to deal with her any other way. Also, what was the deal with the ghost smoke today?” Makina slowly looked up at Nathan, “Dunno…” she said in a small voice. “Was that always a thing?” Murderface asked apprehensively, “Especially the ghost muzzle, it looked kind of cool on you. Fitting for a bitch like yourself.”
“Nos, nos chains for hers!” Toki yelped as he hugged Makina tightly. “Nothings bads will evers happens!”
“Easy Toki. Those chains aren’t real and they won’t hurt her or anyone. And if you guys can see them, that’s gotta mean something...” Nathan sighed, “If only Charles were here to figure this out for us.” the vocalist commented under his breath. Makina lifted her head up and leaned hers against Toki’s, who’s body began shaking. She nuzzled him gently and placed one of her hands on his arm, attempting to soothe him. “Toki, if you get uncomfortable with those ghost chains appearing you can stay out here. I didn’t mean to scare you, I just have no control over how they appear. Everything’s gonna be ok.” Toki shakily inhaled and looked at Makina. Her worried yet oddly calming presence helped the rhythm guitarist to refocus his thoughts, he exhaled, relaxing his tense shoulders. “Ams yous gonna bes oks too?” Toki questioned, Makina shook her head. “Knowing Barker’s gonna be a thorn in my side for the majority of my career from now on, it’ll be wickedly tough. But I’ll make it through.”
“Great to hear Medusa, but that still doesn’t answer what’s with the ghost stuff.” Murderface added with confused annoyance. “Well it only happens when I sing… and that’s it. That’s all I know.” Makina answered, she began to stand up, holding Toki by the hand. “Let’s just get this session over with so I can deal with the other bullshit Barker’s gonna throw my way.” the raven haired singer stated as she went back inside the recording studio to finish up for the day. Nathan lingered behind her and his bandmates, his mind began to wander once more. Why was this all happening to his protege at all?

TMAGP Theory Board (Episode 8-9)
Hi guys sorry about the missed week of theory crafting my schoolwork has been extra demanding and I haven't been able to get around to updating the board until now so here's the updated board
Episode 8 especially was insane so I'm gonna break the episode breakdown into two sections.
What Happened in Episode 8: Running On Empty
New Norris Statement! it's been a while since we heard from our buddy and he did not disappoint. though there's not much to say story-wise this was just a cool incident report I loved the way they described the Lonely as a constantly hungry entity. I also noticed that the pattern of Norris's statements having to do with lost love continues to be true. it's much more subtle than his previous two incidents but the statement giver does mention losing his wife because of divorce. which I believe still follows the pattern I've theorized is taking place.
Something up with Alice. She seems more depressed and serious than she usually is in this episode. (through episode 9 I think I know why but I'll get to that later. I don't believe she is completely in the dark like some of the newer employees and after hearing about Gwen's promotion she is getting suspicious. we have yet to know if Alice knows what's happening. but her behavior in this episode might give us a hint about how naive she actually is.
Colin is Absent. After his freakout in EP 7, Colin is MIA. according to Lena, he's on a mental health break but I would not be surprised if that is a lie.
Gerry and Gertrude are Alive!! Probably the most exciting development in this episode was meeting an alive Gerry Keay and Gertrude Robison. Sam is on the hunt for info about the Magnus Institute after the emails Jon has been sending him and he and Celia end up meeting Gerry who in this universe is considerably more happy and lives with Gertrude. I'm interested to know what role Gertrude plays in this universe is she at all connected to the Institute? I definitely think something is up with her because of the way she tries to deflect Sam's question to Gerry.
Celia Lore. after the meeting with Gerry leads to a dead end for Sam, Celia asks him to help her with her mystery. "I'm trying to look into... Weird physics stuff: time travel, other dimensions, teleportation" More proof for this Celia being from from Archives. why else would she be looking into other dimensions specifically if she wasn't trying to figure out what happened at the Panopticon. (Remember as far as we know Celia before the change in Archives was just a normal person she had no connection to the entities or the Institute.) when Sam asks, she says it's for her friend's podcast but I think she's lying. or not telling the full truth.
Georgie Barker Perhaps? speaking of the friend. our last reveal of the episode is Georgie in protocol. I don't think she is from Archives because Georgie appears after Jons's sacrifice in MAG 200.
And thats it for episode 8 so im gonna move on to Episode 9
What happened in Episode 9: Rolling With It
Sam is back to filling out onboarding paperwork but the questions on it are strange. asking about past traumas, how many dead things you've seen recently, and the infamous question why? similar types of questions that appear in TMA job interviews.
A Magnus Statement!?! After Celia tells Sam she can't find anything at the Magnus Institute Sam considers cutting his losses and letting it go. But then Chester without any prompting begins reading a Magnus statement incident to Sam. I still believe Chester is Jon and he acts as a mentor to Sam trying to keep him safe by providing him with bits of the answers he's looking for. (this way Sam won't be in danger of looking for answers elsewhere and maybe he won't be targeted by this unknown force that had killed RedCanary and driven Colin to extreme paranoia.) the statement reveals that the institute collected and stored artifacts much like the Institute in Archives.
What's the deal with the Institute? the statement Chester shares this episode is pretty standard Magnus stuff, magic fear dice is just another Thursday for TMAG enjoyers. but what I found most interesting was the pre-statement info. What does this viability survey mean? viable for what? I and my roommate have a kind of joke theory that the Institute in this universe is a hub for training and creating new avatars but now I'm starting to think this might actually be the case. I think they are looking for people who have the potential to become avatars as subjects. for the agents, they might be employing avatars to work for the institute and the catalyst has to be finding an avatar that can complete the ritual and bring the Change. The unknown statement giver in this episode can't be a subject because they are already claimed by a power from the dice (still unsure what power it is ) they have low potential to become an agent because based on the end of the statement they now want nothing to do with the dice stepping away from their identity as a fear avatar and then dying. and for some reason, the institute must see some potential that this individual can serve as a catalyst for the ritual. I'm hopeful we'll get another avatar statement and maybe we can revisit this Viability survey again
Gwen's First assignment. Gwen gets her first Liason assignment and it has brought up a major player from the protocol ARG. Mr Bonzo is this weird mascot character that showed up multiple times in the ARG that was launched back in the fall of 2023. Gwen is tasked with delivering an envelope with a name and address to Nigel Dickerson someone who according to Gwen is known for Mr. Bonzo. Basically, I have no idea where this is going but I definitely think it must be important.
Poor Alice. Alice meets with Teddy to catch up. Nothing story significant happens here but we do learn that maybe Alice still harbors some romantic feelings towards Sam.
The Ruins. After her conversation with Teddy Alice is approached by Sam with a request. He wants to go to the old Magnus Institute ruins and wants Alice to come with him. This is definitely a bad idea but she agrees and that's where we leave off
and thats it for now. The story is getting so good and I'm already attached to all the characters so im terrified to see what Sam and alice dig up at the ruins (Sam clearly didn't heed the warning of the RedCanary)
