THE PARALLELS

So now that Chapter 117 is out I want/need to scream about the parallels between Mitsuaya and Kannoe—especially in the prom arc.

Obviously, spoilers ahead, so I’m putting a cut here.

I mean just look at this confession!

So one thing I love about this is who each character is paralleling! Because it would’ve been so easy to parallel Joe and Mitsuki—they’re family, and have been explicitly described as similar in a lot of ways. Hell, they’re even both doing the confessing.

And yet. Thanks to last two chapters we see that it’s actually Mitsuki and Kanna who are parallels. Check this out:

Even though it’s Joe and Mitsuki both doing the confessing, it’s Mitsuki and Kanna who are parallels here.

Like Kanna, Mitsuki wasn’t listening to her partner’s feelings. Like Mitsuki, Kanna decides to “listen more carefully,” and hear Joe out.

I really love this because it shows us that, for all intents and purposes, Kanna is Mitsuki’s mom. Like any kid, Mitsuki picked up behaviors from the adults in her life—and the two most present in her life were Joe and Kanna. So even now, after Kanna’s spent years apart from the Koga’s, Mitsuki still takes after her. It’s cute and amazing and I just—aaaaa

I think Kanna would be touched to know that, in some ways, she really is Mitsuki’s mom. Or aunt, I suppose.

On the Other Side…

We have Joe being paralleled with Aya. And this really works because the two themes for the both of them this arc is confronting their feelings and finding happiness outside of their connection to Mitsuki.

Aya doesn’t quite manage the second one—and is better for it because she’s trying to run from her feelings for Mitsuki—sometimes literally (see also: chapter 114).

Meanwhile, Joe is also running from his feelings, but in the opposite direction. His connection to Mitsuki has always been a shield, protecting him from confronting just how deeply he cares about Kanna. It’s literally why they broke up in the past, and it threatens to be why they don’t reconnect now.

And Mitsuki stops both of them from running!

First she pushes Joe to meet Kanna at the airport, then confronting Aya and being the one to confess. And these are the fruits of her labor:

Aya pulls Mitsuki into the kiss, and Joe makes a serious commitment to Kanna. Like, damn. “Wherever you go, I swear I’ll follow you.” Are you proposing, Joe!? Might as well be goddamn.

And it’s just so perfect.

Everytime Eclipse said ‘Star Guardian, Guardian of the stars,’ all I could hear was this old vine 😂😂 Also ‘Shove it, Moon Man,’ had me in hysterics, this pilot was everything I wanted and more if you haven’t watched it already, then you need to immediately!!!! You can just feel the love that was poured into this project by everyone that worked on it, it truly was a delight to watch 💖

May I ask, what were you going to do with Polybius? Does it exist in the OASIS?

It was a long time ago, but I believe I was gonna put it in the coin op part of the museum planet amongst other games and one of the competitors was going to notice it as a fake since they would of course be familiar with the legend. I can't remember if I was going to tie that into the gates somehow, or make it the way to get the coin on Halliday's other eye. (Cline only included one life coin and tied it into nothing which just made it feel like a random powerup out of nowhere that meant nothing except to be an arse pull save after a dramatic death. I tied it into the ferryman payment to give it coherency and would thus need a second coin. This also gives the coins actual story meaning by letting the dramatic free life thing establish what the coins do so that they can use the second one to do something clever in the climax, making it an aspect of the story instead of a random arse pull.)

It honestly seems ridiculous that the original had so much 80s coin op shit and didn't reference Polybius at all. Very half arsed. Annoys me almost as much as the fact that Cline decided to put the Tomb of Horrors in his game and then very clearly did not actually read the module. (It's not a very big module dude, come on. This is very basic research. Your fucking character read it and you put him in it without reading it yourself?)

You know how Quiet seeing the title cards is like, canon to the lore

The only time when Quiet(or, we, the player) weren’t able to see the title cards is during Princess and the Dragon when we are in the Princess’s body. And the question comes—who named and created the title cards?

It couldn’t be the Narrator, cause a version of him is gone after each chapter and he cannot retain the memories of the previous run. It couldn’t be us/Quiet, cause even when our/his consciousness was transferred to the Princess the title card didn’t appear. And it obviously couldn’t be the Princess herself, since she doesn’t even know that it had existed until you told her about it. Which leaves us with only one candidate (or, well, candidates)

The Voices.

Assuming that Hero was created at the very beginning when Quiet decided that Shifty would be a princess, before Narrator had killed himself and begin the workings of the construct. Hero is silent at the beginning, but he later makes his presence known. He wants to be seen as a hero and doing the right thing, therefore the chapter 1 title “The Hero and the Princess”.

Opportunist saw the Princess as a lying witch. Therefore she’s called The Witch in her chapter. Smitten saw her as a Damsel in distress, hence she’s called The Damsel. Contrarian has never met the Princess before, and therefore she’s a Stranger to him. The chapter 3s are basically just the joint perception of two or more voices. The Damsel is dead cause you killed her in cold blood? She’s dead and a ghost, obviously (said Cold). But Smitten said “NO! SHE IS STILL THERE AND SHE STILL LOVE US AND WE MUST REDEEM OURSELF”, therefore The Grey with a wedding theme. You’ve slain Tower when she was supposed to be untouchable? Last time we saw her, she had been furious about you being able to hurt her. Broken is devastated about it, while Stubborn wants to stick it up to her, therefore she becomes Fury.

The thing is, I don’t think the Voices themselves could see the title cards. They can tell whenever a new loop had occurred and how many times we’ve been there, but I don’t think they could read them like you could. So imagine the chaos that must’ve occurred in the perceived body of Quiet when none of the voices know what’s going on and with the Decider gone.

So. If the names of the title cards were named that way because of The Voices, would that make the names the Voices have be named by them as well? The Princess can’t perceive, and even if she could it’s not in Quiet’s nature to change outwardly. She doesn’t even know the Voices existed until she possesses us or be one with us in some way. Also, even without us in the body Opportunist is still called Opportunist, so it can’t be Quiet naming them. Would their names be what they perceive themself to be? Cheated is called Cheated because he felt cheated over? Hunted is Hunted because he’s the one being hunted? Cold is called Cold because he sees himself as cold blooded and frigid? That means that they are the titles they gave themself. They are labelling themselves.
