Week 3 - This Is How You Connect Practice with Society
I realised how we can connect what we do in design with the society around us.
Through the activity, I learned how to communicate local issues in Singapore such as cultural differences through a short documentary we filmed. My team did so by showing how we as Singaporeans reserve a seat by using the term “chope” which is often not understood by foreigners.
Like how an issue can be communicated through a video, I believe this can be applied to design as well. Just because something is design related does not mean it can’t be incorporated into our society.
This children’s book made entirely out of recycled ocean plastic that was illustrated by Chervelle Fryer that I mentioned earlier in one of the previous semesters would be a good example as wastage is a social issue. Even the story within speaks against ocean waste as well.
I felt that plastic wastage has been a prominent local social issue in Singapore for a while as we tend to use many plastic bags on a daily basis. This gives me an idea of how I could use my design skills to create posters out of recyclable materials to send across a message to people on how to help raise awareness. This then shows how I can utilise my design practices to connect with the society around me.

Research point: Self Directed Projects
The Last Unicorn Chervelle Fryer
Fryer created a piece of fan art of the film ‘Save the last Unicorn’. She set herself the loose brief of capturing the ‘feeling’ of the film’. The illustration feels very much a passion piece for Fryer who creates character and narrative based art.
For many illustrators this type of project can work well to engage with people through social media and be a good way to earn money by selling prints and products with the art on. Fan art of film/tv and literature especially if it is nostalgic can help capture the attention of people who also also enjoy the topic, working as a gateway to your portfolio. I have personally found many illustrators work through seeing work featuring Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Studio Gibili characters.
It is also helpful to keep your portfolio (especially online) current with new work. If you are in between jobs self-directed projects can be a good way to keep your work fresh.

Visual Research
Now that I have come to focus on a particular Idea ’The Dirty Book’ to develop for my MA Project based on the theme Plastic Pollution, I explored few more visuals.
“Project Vortex is an international collective of artists, designers and architects actively focusing on the global problem of plastic pollution through our work.” “We aim to improve global understanding of the impacts of plastic pollution and to assist in the development of initiatives to restrict the flow of plastic debris to our oceans.” (projectvortex.org)
Project vortex have a collection of artwoks created by artists across world and are made of plastic wastes from ocean. Following are the visuals taken from their website that would be of inspiration for developing my book.
Purple People Eaters, 2012 MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE
Artist: Ian Trask Dimensions: 12” x 12” Materials: Mixed media collage made with plastic pantone chips and discarded plexiglass.
Blister Pact, 2015 INSTALLATION (shown at the Invisible Dog Art Center)

Artist: Kristyna and Marek Milde Sculpture Dimensions: cc 12” x 22” x 4” each Materials: Hand embroidered plastic shopping bag, silk
All the above images are taken from the website www.projectvortex.org
Also I came across this amazing project suggested by my tutor. It claims to be Worlds First Children’s Book Made Entirely From Recycled Ocean Plastic. The book was printed on a paper made out of plastics collected from oceans. This innovative work was carried out by a Japanise tech company the Teijin Group. To do this, they had to create a process that turns recycled plastics into fibers that are processed to sheets just like paper and tear and water-resistant.

The Ocean Plastic book is illustrated by Chervelle Fryer.
At this stage of my creative process I have build a visual vocabulary to help with building visuals for my project. This module have been a tremendous work towards developing on particular idea for the Project. Now I feel focused and have halfway clear picture of what my Project outcome would be.

Developing and Designing
After researching everything I began creating custom lettering for my clothing. I planned to make them either stand-alone or paired with an illustration. Below shows my attempt at hand lettering.
My first quote was inspired by Jessica Hische. I wanted to try out different fonts and ways to lay out lettering which Hische incorporates within all her work. I used a fact that I found while researching ocean pollution to experiment with.
I think it turned out well as it’s easy to read. This will help my audience understand the effects ocean pollution has on animals. However, the only downside is the word pollution is split up. This will make it a little harder to sort out the kerning of the letters but it’s still doable.
I plan to digitalise this and begin mocking up a t-shirt with this design on it. I feel that this lettering would suit an animation for social media. I will experiment with both. I will begin with sketching out a storyboard of what I could do with the typography.
I wanted to experiment with typography as a logo. At the time I was considering the name ‘Love Ocean’ if I couldn’t find a better replacement. I created a curvy font that has a decorative flick on the os. I wanted to emphasise the movement of the ocean. I felt that I needed a font that overlapped each other as well as has defined curves. I think the font does capture the ocean a little however, I’m unsure of the placement of the word ‘ocean’. I’m not a big fan of how it stacks on top of each other. I know this only happened because I ran out of space but it threw me off the font.
However, the biggest point that put me off this name was how cheesy it sounded. It was too on the nose. It didn’t leave room for the audience to figure out anything about the brand as it was obvious.
This lettering is supposed to go alongside my turtle illustration based on Chervelle Fryer’s style. I liked how the turtle turned out and I felt it would perfectly suit a clothing design. When creating that drawing I brainstormed different slogans to go next to it. The phrase ‘Plastic shell off’ perfectly stood out to me so I created a custom font that incorporates plastic and a turtle shell. I plan to have the lettering at the back of the top and the illustration on the front but I will swap and play around with the order of them. I also considered having a patch or a tag at the side of the top with my brand’s logo. I will sketch out different designs and hopefully mock it up on my designs.
Illustrative Designs
After experimenting with lettering I wanted to draw more icons and designs for my clothing. Below shows my designs.
I decided to draw a puffin because I was unsure of what to draw relating to ocean waste. At the time I was brainstorming different brand names and one of them was ‘Puffins’. So I wanted to practise drawing the animal just in case I decided to go with this brand name. However, after creating this illustration I realise it relates perfectly to my lettering. I decided to turn this illustration into a potential design with my lettering. I planned to have the illustration at the font and the lettering at the back but this may change depending on my experiments.
The other design is supposed to symbolise animals turning to plastic. This was based off a statement I read in the Queen of the Ocean article by Design Week. It stated, “by 2050 it is estimated that there will be more pieces of plastic than fish”. It stood out to me because I found it shocking. I didn’t think the plastic problem was this extreme. I wanted to show this to my audience in hope to reduce the plastic that’s used and dumped into the ocean. That’s why part of my dolphins are made up of plastic and a small part of them is how they actually look like.
I used Tombow brush pens to create the waves. I did this because I wanted to capture the movement of the waves as well as emphasise that they are waves.
I see this design being impactful because it shows directly how animals are being affected by plastic as well as hinting at how extreme the problem of plastic has become.
Evaluation
I have slowly begun creating possible designs for my clothing brand. But I’m still miles away from completely deciding on my brand’s name. So I plan to continue sketching and brainstorming ideas of brand names. I was thinking of creating mind maps and notes of all the notes that I think of. I will document everything I think of during the thinking process.
