The River Colony cats reference sheets for the Chapter One animation! These are fairly simple ref sheets because there was a lot of characters in the 1st episode. Just enough info to get the episode done, basically! haha Snap and I also knew the characters well enough to get by with just a simple cheat sheet. We now make much more detailed character sheets. Also, please ignore the WarriorCats lingo still present on some of this older art lol

Yoo I just realised Mosspaw and Lilypaw are cousins through their dads I wonder how they feel about their daughters havin a rivalry?

Their dads probably don’t notice much. Apprentices will be apprentices, after all. Lilypaw’s parents, Cherryrill and Ripplepelt, also don’t pay much attention to what happens to Lilypaw.

Conversations at the Moonlight Meeting

We had our voice actors record conversations at the Meeting you can hear in the background of Chapter 1! See if you can pick out some of the conversations in the episode:

GROUP 1

Piketail sitting with Shrewpelt, Hailstorm and Swiftshadow.

Piketail: Hey, how’s the prey running? Good to see you.

Shrewpelt: Why do you always sit with us?

Hailstorm: *laughs* Oh hush, Shrewpelt.

Piketail: You’re so grumpy all the time Shrewpelt, just enjoy the gathering.

Hailstorm: We are doing well, how’s River Colony?

Piketail: The fish are plentiful as always…

Hailstorm: That good, huh?

Piketail: I shouldn’t say more, you know how Rainfall can be…

Piketail: *Quickly* Oh! Look, the Marsh-landers showed up… Hawkshell doesn’t look so good…

Hailstorm: I wonder what’s wrong.

Piketail: Go Redleaf! …Hm, I thought he’d choose Dawnfrost… I wonder how she’s taking it…

Shrewpelt: (displeased and jealous of Dawnfrost) *low growl*

Hailstorm: I don’t know, she hasn’t talked about it.

Frightened Murmurs:

*gasp*

Piketail: That badger wasn’t THAT big… That doesn’t make sense at all… Sunfire and Breezeheart could fight off a badger...

Hailstorm: Rip a Ranger to shreds?

Shrewpelt: That could be dangerous. Redleaf had better double our patrols.

Piketail: It looks like Hawkshell is about to jump Rainfall…

Hailstorm: That wouldn’t be good… Surely the Spirits wouldn’t approve...

Piketail: (under her breath) But they approve of Rainfall’s disrespect…*sigh* Sunfire and Breezeheart were always so fair at the border…

Hailstorm: Border patrol won’t be the same without them. I’ll miss them too...

Piketail: Looks like River Colony is heading out. I guess I’ll be going then. Hailstorm, you take care of this grumpy furball. *turns to Swiftshadow and smiles* Swiftshadow.

Hailstorm: *laughs* Always. Until next time, Piketail! Stay safe!

Shrewpelt: Farewell Piketail.

Swiftshadow: We’ll be seeing you Piketail.

GROUP 2

New-Claws sitting together. Peach, Moss, Grey, and Pool.

Peach: You said you just became a new-claw? Wow, and you get to go to the gathering on the same day?

Moss: Yeah! Rainfall says that I’m already a great new-claw.

Pool: *under his breath* That’s hard to believe…

Moss: She said to watch Swiftmask closely so I can learn what Rangers do.

Peach: That’s great! Good luck with your training.

Moss: Ripped to shreds, but how?

Grey: Hawkshell says it was big, maybe it was a wolf…

Moss: But Rainfall said it was a badger.

Grey: Rainfall may not be right about this…

Moss: Pff, Rainfall is right about everything!

Moss: Do you think they’ll fight?

Grey: I hope not…

Peach: Hawkshell is really angry…

Grey: Hopefully we’ll see you at the border Peach.

Peach: Please take care!

Moss: We will! We can fight off a badger.

Pool: It wasn’t a badger! Were you even listening?

Moss: *ignoring Pool* Coming Swiftmask!

GROUP 3

Cherryrill, Kestrelsnap, Crowstalker and Stagcharge sitting together, gossiping.

Stagcharge: Cherryrill, good to see you.

Kestrelsnap: Long time no see.

Cherryrill: How have your Colonies fared through Spring?

Stagcharge: Glad to finally see leaves on the trees. Stronger than ever!

Crowstalker: *in a cool tone* Of course they are.

Cherryrill: River Colony too. Rainfall named a few new-claws today, my Lily is one of them. Blueriver’s kittens are thriving and Mistyclaw’s kittens are due any day!

Kestrelsnap: That’s good to hear!

Cherryrill: Did you hear about the queen in Field Colony? Nightpool. We can’t figure out who her mate is.

Crowstalker: It’s rude to speculate.

Kestrelsnap: *much to Crow’s irritation* Do you think it’s Goldenpelt?

Cherryrill: Maybe, but I never see them together, he’s always on Spottedshadow’s tail.

Stagcharge: Why is Wildfur here?

Crowstalker: Hawkshell thinks he will be a better Colony Cat if she makes him a Mentor.

Kestrelsnap: As if training a new-claw ever made anyone less lazy. <.< Not to mention it’s MY son she decided to use as her little experiment…

Crowstalker: Now, now, Hawkshell knows what she’s doing.

Kestrelsnap: Wildfur is barely paying attention to my little Pool! He’s back there staring at that Field-lander bleeding-heart,--like some lovesick dove!

Stagcharge: Cherryrill, what’s the deal with Wolfthorn?

Cherryrill: *laughs* A similar situation, I guess. Rainfall just welcomed him back and then gave him a new-claw to train! Can you believe it? After he was gone for months?

Cherryrill: Oh! Redleaf will be great!

Stagcharge: We are glad to have him!

Kestrelsnap: Sorry to hear about Brackenfoot.

Frightened Murmurs:

*gasp*

Stagcharge: Did you see it?

Crowstalker: No, but they were shredded… It couldn’t have been a badger

Cherryrill: That’s awful… they were so lovely together…

Kestrelsnap: It’s a sad day for us all…

Cherryrill: Be safe on your way back. Rainfall doesn’t seem concerned, but…

Crowstalker: *gruff* Hawkshell is serious about this, Cherryrill. I saw their bodies...

Cherryrill: I am aware. I wouldn’t doubt her.

Kestrelsnap: I’ll try to leave word if anything else happens.

Cherryrill: Just be sure to stay away from Iceclaw’s patrols.

GROUP 4

Goldenpelt, Timberleg and Stone sitting together. Thrushspots and Clayfur in front of them.

Timberleg: Now, look just there Stone, That’s Elmtail and Rainfall.

Goldenpelt: The Captains of Oak Colony and River Colony.

Timberleg: It’s important that you know who they are. Below them is where the Seconds sit.

Stone: Who is that?

Goldenpelt: Pineclaw.

Timberleg: That’s someone you don’t want to confront on the border… If you ever see him...

Goldenpelt: Come get me or Forestleaf immediately.

Stone: *nods* Okay.

Thrushspots: *in an intense low voice, like she’s trying to scare him* That’s how Hazelfur got the scar on his ear.

Goldenpelt: *flat but strict* That’s enough Thrushspots.

Thrushspots: *straightening up* Yes, Goldenpelt.

Timberleg: *continuing* Over there is where the Herbalists sit. It looks like Orangebrook isn’t here again…

Goldenpelt: Gatherings might be difficult for him to travel to now, he is nearly an elder.

Goldenpelt: Redleaf is certainly… a choice.

Timberleg: I’m sure he’ll do fine.

Goldenpelt: As long as he keeps the Oak-landers off of our territory, we won’t have a problem.

Frightened Murmurs:

*gasp*

Stone: *scared*  Is it going to come to the Field-lands?

Timberleg: Oh! Of course not!

Goldenpelt: We can handle it if it does.

Stone: Those poor Rangers…

Goldenpelt: A Ranger defends his Colony to the death. Consider this a lesson.

Stone: Yes, Goldenpelt.

Timberleg: Well, I guess that’s it.

Stone: It’s over?

Timberleg: Sometimes meetings aren’t even this long. We will wait for Hazelfur and Forestleaf and then follow them across the tree bridge.

Goldenpelt: You go ahead, I’m going to wait for Spottedshadow.

Timberleg: Oh, good idea. ^^

GROUP 5

Piketail meets up with Swiftmask and Wolfthorn as they leave.

Piketail: Swiftmask, wait up! *low voice* Did you hear that?

Swiftmask: I’m not sure it was the same badger… Rainfall isn’t worried though…

Piketail: Yeah, I don’t think Rainfall cares. The deaths of two great Rangers...

Wolfthorn: Nothing is ever a big deal to her…

Piketail: What if it IS a big deal though? We should watch the border just in case… *trailing off*

I adore Cherryrill’s design - love how she looks both soft and approachable, but also tough. Kind of like River colony’s version of Kestralsnap. I was wondering how she lost her eye?

Ooo, good question.

To answer simply: Iceclaw.

Cherryrill lost her eye after she lost one of her kittens. She did not take kindly to the decision that killed Lily's sibling and she was punished for it. She pledged her loyalty to Rainfall in order to stay in the colony, but she will never forgive. Iceclaw is the reason behind many scars...

I’m curious about Cherryrill. Since she’s Frozen’s mentor, I’m wondering about the reason why Rainfall chose her. Mingling with cats from other colonies at a gathering and warning them to steer clear of Iceclaw’s patrol doesn’t make Cherryrill appear like a Rainfall loyalist that would be expected to mentor Frozen, so is it like keeping an eye on Cherryrill or something else?

Cherryrill has a history of disagreement with Rainfall, so she has been put in her place. Being Frozen's teacher is mostly a way for Rainfall to keep her in line; she can train Frozen and be loyal to the "royal family" or she can be disappeared like some others who have crossed Rainfall. Cherryrill reads this loud and clear.

Frozen - River Colony New-Claw

Age: 8 months

Parents: Sandtail and Iceclaw

Mentor: Cherryrill

Born into privilege, Frozen’s father is Second, her aunt is the Captain of River Colony and her grandfather, Frozenpool, for whom she is named, is a well respected Elder on River Colony’s Council. Her family is special and so is she!

Having such a great family means she’s better than other cats and she gets to have everything one day! She has a crush on Falcon and knows that they will be mates when they are older, having the perfect litter to contribute to their perfect colony! She hopes to be a nicer parent than her own… Her parents are scary… but maybe the other New-Claws are afraid of their parents too? As long as she follows Iceclaw’s orders, his claws won’t turn on her… She hopes. Her mother, Sandtail, has been absent for months, but Frozen can’t help but see her mother’s malicious eyes in every shadow.

Frozen never gets assigned boring duties, babysitting kittens is for cats like Talon, and cleaning dens is for cats like Moss and Ivy. When her mentor, Cherryrill, tries to give her a dull task, Iceclaw always scolds the Mentor for disrespecting his daughter. Frozen can’t believe Cherryrill keeps forgetting how important she is! Sometimes it feels like Cherryrill doesn’t even seem to like her! Frozen doesn’t know why! She is trying so hard to be the best New-Claw she can! Honing hunting and fighting skills with the extra time she has from not doing the more demeaning work that’s suited for other cats!

Her best friend is Lily, but it has to stay distant because Frozen is the one with a great destiny, after all! Lily is still just a normal cat, even if Frozen wishes she wasn’t. It's lonely at the top, her dear aunt has told her that. And while Rainfall seems to relish it, Frozen sometimes wonders what it would be like to be born just average, like her peers. But also, she admits that putting cats like Moss and Talon in their place with Lily can be so much fun! Lily can get the biggest rise out of them; she always knows how to push their buttons, even when Frozen’s insults fall flat. She wishes was more clever with her insults...

Frozen’s least favorite activity is when her father takes her out for “private lessons”. They scare her. Iceclaw tortures his prey and makes Frozen help, telling her that these lessons will be useful to protect Rainfall in the future. And only they are strong enough to see it done. Frozen dreads the day her father asks her to use these skills on something other than prey…

“No! I’m being weak again! Shape up, Frozen! I will be as glorious as my grandfather before me!”
