For lesbian awareness week here's art of my warrior-queen Viarra and her handmaid Elissa from my novel-in-progress, The First Empress! All of them commissions from the amazing artists MJ Barros, Chenria (@chenria), and Telenia Albuquerque (@9musesandanoldmind). Elissa has been Viarra's servant and companion since they were little, they become lovers for the first time as teens, and after she becomes queen Viarra makes Elissa her royal concubine.

ocs on a rainy day:

eddie is as busy or as bored as ever on rainy days. she works every single day of her life in the little store attached to her house, eager to prove to herself, her father, and the 1860s town around her, that she is more than capable of doing so. if it's raining, you can find her either reading at the counter, or perhaps standing by the door, watching the rain pelt into the dirt road below the porch. there are several raining scenes in my story and she often stands there, wrapped up with her shawl about her. sometimes she'll sit on the front porch and watch the rain, trying to think of new ways of describing it in her mind, but most often she is indoors.

hector doesn't like being uncomfortable, but will suffer through it if it means that he doesn't have to be on his own. he claims not to mind the rain, but soaked denim can take days to dry properly and it's just the worst. he is not given as many hours to work, so if he's not working at the saloon, he might be bothering the local grocery store owner (see above) or reading in the room he rents.

eddie likes to buy herself nice things, and to always dress fashionably (and dress her more reluctant daughter fashionably too) but she is not prone to lavish purchases. she'd probably save most of it, and use some to buy a horse and stable it up at the local farm. she will invest in all of the town's shops and businesses, specifically the school. she'll probably buy one absolutely ridiculous item that she thinks is a stupid waste of money, until her husband is like "life is short buy the peacock shaped lamp" and she's like "ok" so now she has a huge ridiculous peacock shaped lamp or WHATEVER

hector would give all his money to his family so now eddie has 2 million dollars (nice) -- or, okay, she has 1.5 and lily has half a million dollars.

lily would spend half a million dollars extremely recklessly. she's buying new clothes, she's buying the best horses, the best new weapons, she's buying a house for herself in town, a room for herself in the city. she's buying ridiculous gifts for hector and eddie. she commissions the greatest artist in all of america to paint the three of them so hector has it forever. she's a princess for a year and then she has no money. and i doubt her parents would give her any more money either because she is only going to be a princess for another week and then run out again :/ lily is also seventeen and i feel like that's important to state because i dont think i'd have been wise with my funds at 17 either to be fair to her

1. Art programs you have but don't use Oh noooo don't ask me that! I install so many but always crawl back to Photoshop and Painter... let's see: Krita, Clip Studio Paint, Heavypaint, openCanvas 1, openCanvas 3.03, an old copy of Paint Shop Pro that won't open but I don't have the heart to delete it, Rebelle, Flame Painter, Al.chemy that I forgot about but wow it still works!, Amberlight.

9. What are your file name conventions Ah, just regular and descriptive file names? A character name, or character-doingathing, or a title if I have something specific in mind. I name it filename/filename2/filename3 when I make a new copy while working (usually after merging a lot of layers because I still want to have a copy where they're preserved). And of course, the filename-final once I'm done!

29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically Hm, probably movies/TV shows? I don't watch that many to begin with, but I'm rarely inspired by them in an artistic way.

Admittedly, this is an unspectacular image of Virgil Tracy just sitting around... but I had fun drawing it and playing around. Perspective is a little off... but oh well. I don't care too much to be honest. 

You might have expected something more exciting when I teased the sketch thing... But I just wanted something cozy - Virgil between missions relaxing on the sofa and playing on his phone (though I am not even sure they have mobile phones anymore ... it was easier to draw than a holo communicator thingy ... 🤷‍♀️ I just take the liberty for my small fanart). 

The potted plants are once again a CSP asset - asset makers make artists's lives so much easier sometimes. Bless them!

i'm absolutely windswept

I started Thunderteers in May of 2019. I remember very distinctly being out to dinner with Hubs, coordinating the AU concept almost entirely for a long, epic first story. We were at a Chili's and I had my usual indecisive platter of appetizers as my meal. As of today there's only been 3 chapters of what mapped out that day. Some of it made it to paper. I've never been great at those long epics - I love reading them, but my writing brain is most solid with the 1K-6K word length.

So I started building the world with fic. I wrote about Virgil playing the violin, and how he made music. I explored Gordon's accident, and what it could've happened in place of a hydrofoil. I reached for Military!Bros instead of my usual FishTank, and explored the truth behind legends. I forced myself to make and break OCs, spent way too much time researching when songs were created, recipes of the time, if certain animals were classified the same way, and what name a city may have had in 1774.

Other things I decided not to research at all.

Above all that, before I posted a new story or fic, I asked myself if the imagery was there, and was it something I was proud of? Because I knew - the only way I could get others to set sail with me, was to make sure I was taking you on the journey. Not if it was historically accurate, but does this feel like our boys, and are they interacting with the environment in a way that feels like it would still be them? Is it possible to still see Gordon? Still see Scott?

That was my first AU.

Naturally, in asking myself this, I've had different images in my head all this time, and I was lucky enough this month to have the chance to ask the amazing @chenria to bring one of them to life for me. You can find the post below:

Windswept (~500 words)

As far as clouds go, Gordon is among the strangest. The wind tugs at his clothing, hanging loose and informally on his silhouette, and at his hair where he stands aloft amidst the sails. The seabirds close to shore weave their dance between the ropes above, circling him curiously. Even though his form is strange to them, he’s not unwelcome in their home in the air. If anything, he’s just a part of the flying clouds that make up the rigging of their ship.

The gulls’ calls sound like laughter, and he smiles with them. The birds will accompany the ship for a time, darting towards the quick meal at the bow where the front of the ship often disturbs the sea life below. If the voyage is to be a lucky one, they’ll grace the wood of the ship with a gift or two that’ll be left to wash away only with the next rain.

Gordon can feel the sway of the ship stronger from above; though with the Thunderbird still anchored close to shore, the waves are gentle as they lap against her firm hull. The movement is a tease for the voyage ahead, as Gordon has always found himself more comfortable in their journeys out to sea than he’s ever felt in his tentative steps on land. The ship has watched him grow and come of age, from awkward limbs racing up the rigging, to strong shoulders heaving her lines and helming her wheel. She’s given him the freedom to roam, to explore lands and seas unknown, and even with the thrill of adventure, Gordon feels most safe in the comfort of her embrace. If that isn’t a home, he doesn’t know what else is.

He knows her in the early morn - the way the sunrise paints cotton and how the mist tingles at the fuzz on his arms at the start of his shift. He knows the echo of their shanties within her oak beams, and the squeak of her joy when the creatures of the sea ride along with her bow waves upon them really catching the wind and when the tang of citrus remains on his tongue from breaking fast.

He knows her in the rain, the smell of wood and cotton when burdened with wet from above as well as below, the crackle of lightning in its brief and staggered illumination of her flags. He knows her in the cold, when the puff of his breath is visible and the wind cuts into his skin. Among whales, massive and elegant as they groan their song into her hull.

He knows her in the evening – Virgil and John’s cooking and their different nuances for flavor and spice, the vibrato of Virgil’s violin paired with the warm timbre of the Scott’s cello pulsing along her foundations. The way she creaks below Alan’s eager footsteps.  He knows the soft glow around flame-lit lanterns in the darkest of night and the hush of melodies uttered in multiple languages up towards twinkling stars. The way his hammock rocks him to sleep with her movement.

He knows her in both fair winds and motionless skies, in the brightest of sunlit days and the most cloud-covered of nights. Through doldrums, archipelagos, and the far reaches of the seas, and along coastlines, he knows her.  

And his soul trembles just as she does, her unfurled sails shuddering in anticipation of catching the wind.

I wasn’t feeling great yesterday and had some struggles with my mental health… so I decided to distract myself with another landscape illustration and following a James Julier tutorial.

I'm plotting and scheming for how to fill some of my Bad Things Happen bingo card (MULTI-CHAPTER ANGSTFEST LET'S GOOOOOOOO)... place your bets now: who's gonna crawl out of my computer first to kill me, Xaja or Devi?

Xaja has existed in some form or another for like 15 years, and she's been subject to The Angst for the better part of the last 11 years since I started playing SWTOR. Her angst started at age 7 with the Sacking of Coruscant! (To be entirely fair, a good chunk of her angst and trauma was dealt to her by BioWare's writers and NOT me. Looking at you, TR-8R arc and the entire Jedi Knight story from the end of Act 2 onward, not to mention KOTXX...) (but seriously, the latest story update is making her drink heavily.)

Angst counters: She gets the bisexual disaster spy (Theron), and she's got a loving dad and brothers (and a kick-ass Mando sister-in-law), and she's a galactic leader and respected Jedi Master, and she's got two adorable kids with Theron now, and the former Grand Master is her mother-in-law. Awks. But she's got LIGHTSABERS and natural telepathy/telekinesis, so I'm pretty sure that negates some of the bad, right?

Devi, in the BG3 context, has only existed since December 26, 2023. But ohhhhh she's got some angst in there beyond just what the game provides! Her angst started pretty much at birth -- thanks, abusive asshole father! And everything I'm planning for this multi-chapter angstfest for the bingo card centres around her. (It'll be an AU, so she'll probably be mostly fine in the end... right?)

Angst counters: She gets the hot wizard (Gale), and she's besties with a vampire and a warlock and an ex-Sharran, and she gets informally adopted by the High Harper, and she does (eventually) get her big brother back and watches her abusive father die in front of her. And her canonical angstfest is only a few months of having a tadpole in her brain, as opposed to Xaja's "song that never ends". And when she and Gale settle in Waterdeep after the game, she'll very quickly have an adorable little girl, and probably a little boy down the line too!
