Craig Jordan
Pharmacologist whose research into tamoxifen helped many women with breast cancer to live longer
In the 1970s only 40% of women diagnosed with breast cancer could expect to survive for 10 years or more. Today that figure is over 75%. Screening and early diagnosis have played a part, but one of the key reasons for the improvement is the drug tamoxifen, which massively reduces the risk of cancer recurring after surgery.
The British-American pharmacologist Craig Jordan, who has died aged 76, was the first to show that tamoxifen could stop tumours growing by blocking the female hormone oestrogen from locking on to cells in the breast at specific sites called oestrogen receptors.
Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women across the world and 80% of women with the disease have receptors that make them sensitive to oestrogen, which can stimulate cells in the breast to reproduce uncontrollably and form tumours.
Jordan’s lifelong study of tamoxifen led to the discovery of a range of other effective treatments for breast cancer that either blocked oestrogen receptors or reduced the amount of the hormone the body produces. His studies have also improved women’s health by shedding light on other conditions including endometrial cancer, osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms.
He made his discoveries in the face of huge scepticism from the medical community. He was not a medical doctor but a laboratory scientist who conducted his research on rats and mice. Tamoxifen does not kill cancer cells, it simply stops them from growing. The received wisdom in the 70s when he began his work was that the only way to deal with cancer was to cut it out, or blast it with radiation or powerful chemicals to destroy every trace of the tumour. Such treatments, though they can be effective, are distressing for patients and have many side effects.
“There was an obsession with the idea that that combination chemotherapies were going to cure all cancers,” Jordan told the website Oncology Central in 2019. “It felt like we were trying to swim upstream as we were saying no, target the [o]estrogen receptor and give tamoxifen forever and people will stay alive.”
It took decades before the evidence for tamoxifen’s effectiveness became undeniable. A number of clinical research groups, encouraged by Jordan’s laboratory results, had tested tamoxifen in patients, but the results, though encouraging, were too marginal to change practice.
In 1998 the Early Breast Cancer Triallists Collaborative Group, based in Oxford, combined the data from studies of 37,000 women to show that those with oestrogen-sensitive tumours who took tamoxifen for five years after surgery experienced a 47% reduction in the risk of the cancer returning and a 26% reduction in the risk of dying within 10 years.
Tamoxifen and other selective oestrogen receptor modulators are now part of the standard treatment for women who have had surgery for oestrogen-sensitive breast cancers.
Jordan’s mother, Cynthia Mottram, was a GI bride who met his father, Virgil Johnson, when he was in service as a soldier with the US army in Britain during the second world war. They returned to New Braunfels in Texas, where Jordan was born, but the marriage broke down and she brought her son back to her home in Cheshire when he was a toddler.
He attended Moseley Hall grammar school in Cheadle, where he took to chemistry with such enthusiasm that his mother let him set up a laboratory at home (leading to the kinds of near-disaster that punctuate the early lives of many successful scientists). After his mother remarried, Craig was adopted by his stepfather, Geoffrey Jordan, and took his name.
At first his ambition did not reach beyond working as a technician at the nearbyICI laboratories, but he successfully obtained a place at the University of Leeds to study pharmacology. Taking a summer job with ICI, he met the endocrinologist Arthur Walpole, who had been part of the team that developed tamoxifen, then known as ICI 46,474.
It was supposed to be a contraceptive, but early trials led to more pregnancies, rather than fewer. During his PhD at Leeds, Jordan developed strong links with the ICI scientists, who funded the early stages of his work on oestrogen receptors.
In 1972 Jordan went to the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Massachusetts. The lab focused on contraception, but as ICI 46,474 had failed as a contraceptive Jordan began to examine its effects on breast cancer in rats. Meanwhile, in 1973, ICI had given the drug a name, tamoxifen, and launched it as a not particularly effective treatment for late-stage breast cancer.
The following year Jordan returned to Leeds as a lecturer, where he continued to collaborate with ICI. His key discoveries in this period were that given over a period of years, tamoxifen could be used to prevent cancer coming back after surgery; and that it could prevent cancer developing in women whose biology put them at particularly high risk. He also discovered a very effective breakdown product of tamoxifen that went on to form the basis of other drugs that prevent postmenopausal women from losing bone density.
In 1980 he moved permanently to the US, where he held senior positions at a succession of leading research universities, setting up a “tamoxifen team” at each, before finally settling in 2014 as a professor and chair of cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His further discoveries included a small increased risk of endometrial cancer with tamoxifen, so that doctors now screen their patients before prescribing the drug.
For much of his life, Jordan had an unusual parallel career as an adviser on biological and chemical weapons – and illicit drug use – to the British and US armies.
His family had a strong military heritage and he had joined the Officers’ Training Corps while a student at Leeds, combining his PhD research with stints with the army in Germany during the cold war. He went on to be recruited into the intelligence corps with the rank of captain, and subsequently became a member of the SAS reserve. He was an avid collector of antique weapons, and described himself as an “outstanding shot”.
He received many honours in the course of his career, and was appointed CMG in the Queen’s birthday honours in 2019 for services to women’s health. In turn he funded prizes, scholarships and special lectures at the universities of Leeds and Oxford, conscious of the debt he owed to British society for his early education and research opportunities. He was open about his diagnosis with kidney cancer in 2018 and continued working until shortly before his death.
Craig Jordan was married three times, each marriage ending in divorce. He is survived by Alexandra and Helen, his daughters from his first marriage, to Marion Williams, and five grandchildren.

“Antisemitic writings” were found in a search of items belonging to the shooter who opened fire Sunday afternoon at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, according to law enforcement.
The woman, identified as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, was carrying an assault-style rifle with the word “Palestine” written on it, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.
A motive is still not clear, but police said they believe Moreno acted alone. A dispute between Moreno and her ex-husband’s family, some of whom are Jewish, may be related to the shooting, Houston Police Commander Chris Hassig said in a news briefing Monday.
The shooter also made several statements during the course of the incident, but the officials declined to describe them. Law enforcement officials added that Moreno previously went by multiple aliases, including using both male and female names.
Moreno also brought her 7-year-old son with her to the church, the officials said. During the incident, the shooter stated she had a bomb, but a search turned up no explosive devices, officials said.
Preliminary tests done of chemicals found at the scene concluded that the materials did not pose any risk, Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Peña said at the Monday news briefing.
“The products on their own are benign, and they’re common products that we would see in other applications,” Peña said.
Law enforcement records show the shooter had at least six arrests since 2005, including unlawful carrying of a weapon, which she pleaded guilty to; evading arrest; and assault on a public official, which was pleaded to a lesser charge.
Moreno has a documented mental health history and was placed under an emergency detention order by Houston police in 2016, Hassig said.
Maria Scott, who lived four doors from Moreno in the city of Conroe, roughly 40 miles north of Houston, said she did not know her well, but “people talked about her because she was wreaking havoc.”
She said a couple of years ago Moreno knocked on her door at 7 a.m. “insisting I go get my dogs out of her mother’s yard,” said Scott, 57. “She was just very stern and very, very angry for someone at 7 a.m.”
Scott said she heard from talk in the neighborhood that Moreno carried a firearm.
Another neighbor, Linda Giutta, wrote on Facebook that she and others from the neighborhood had raised concerns about Moreno with local law enforcement and the city council.
"No one could offer any kind of help," Giutta said in the post. "We are told to see something and say something but nothing gets done until it is too late."
Neither the police department nor Conroe's five council members immediately responded to requests for comment.
Police have publicly stated that two off-duty officers at the church returned fire, striking the shooter and killing her at about 1:50 p.m. Her son was also struck in the head during the incident and was in critical condition.
Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference Monday that the 7-year-old boy is “fighting for his life.” Police previously said the boy was 5 years old.
Another person who was injured, a 57-year-old man, was released from the hospital, Finner added.
He added that one of the off-duty officers is an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the other is a Houston police officer.
Officials are investigating a wide range of possible motives given the writing on the weapon, but cannot yet conclusively say what led to the shooting. They have not ruled out terrorism or hate crime-related motives.
The shooting happened between services, as people were arriving for Spanish service, Osteen said. About 45,000 people attend services there every week, making it one of the largest megachurches in the country.
Osteen said that he was “in a fog” after the violence and that he was keeping the injured in his prayers.
“We don’t understand why all these things happen,” the pastor told reporters Sunday. “But we know God’s in control.”
In a subsequent statement on Facebook, Osteen urged his congregation to lean on their faith to cope with the anguish.
“Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement,” he said. “Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.”

when my family first moved to Texas they splurged on a house with a backyard pool (admittedly every house in the neighborhood was bougie as fuck -- my parents were interested in the school district more than anything else, and being a good school, housing in the area was expensive). the first year we lived there we all had a good time in the backyard pool, even my mom who couldn't swim enjoyed hanging out in the shallow end.
we bought the house around 2006-07, the housing crash happened in 08. mom lost her job. dad had to work longer hours and the company dumped shitty work on him. as my parents and myself got busier, we stopped using the pool. i went to middle school and my flippant "I don't need to study and can still pass the tests" attitude, which worked in elementary school, stopped working, and I wouldn't be diagnosed with ADHD until 15 years later. dad was working twelve hour days, six days a week. mom still couldn't swim.
to keep costs down dad fired the mowers and the poolboy service (we didn't contract them, they served the previous residents and when we moved in they were like "should we keep coming" and my dad said "sure why not"). taking care of the pool consisted of skimming the leaves and big debris off the top, running the pool vac for dust, checking the pump, taking leaves out of the basket filter, refilling the water, refilling the chlorine, refilling the other pool chemicals that kept the chlorine stable, and occasionally powerwashing the main filter.
some fun facts about pool chemistry: you can either use saltwater or chlorinated water to keep algae out of the water. keeping algae out is important cause dead algae clog up the pumps and shit (and are also toxic, depending on the algae), and also you don't want a live ecosystem in your pool cause bacteria and stuff. i'm not familiar with saltwater pool chemistry; we did chlorine. now raw chlorine under the hot sun (well UV light specifically) breaks down pretty fast, so you want to bind it to something so it doesn't break down as fast, but binding the chlorine also makes it unavailable for breaking down bacteria, so it's a balancing act between keeping chlorine available and keeping chlorine durable. you have to manage the pH, partially for chlorine stability and partially just because swimming around in something acidic is bad for the health. theres actually some pretty fun chemistry that goes into this, but basically if shit looks wrong (or just every season) you take out your pH strips and sample tubes and check chlorine levels, pH, etc.
this was, as you'd imagine, a non-trivial amount of work, and my dad spent his precious time off work tending to this pool no one used: an hour or sometimes two, sliding the pool vac around the plaster floor, skimming the leaves, as the shadows grew longer and the sun slid lower. i would watch him out the window from the living room, where my computer was, glancing over my shoulder now and then to make sure my mom wasn't watching me procrastinate. sunset was behind the fence, so i couldn't see the sun dip below the horizon. but i could see it getting darker.
the previous residents kept a garden in the backyard, full of flowers i couldn't name but still vaguely remember: these big two-three foot tall things that bloomed red and orange, and some flowering vines crawling up arch-shaped trellises. none of us had a green thumb; the tall flowers died on their own. the vines persisted, though without bloom, until one day my dad decided they were a nuisance and cut them all down. so the flowerbeds were all empty dirt and the trellises laid bare, slowly rusting.
worst part is that you can't even get rid of it. well, we couldn't get rid of ours, specifically. you'd think "why not just drain the pool", but you can't, is the thing. it's embedded in the ground, it's not one of those aboveground ones. it had a curved bottom and plaster casing and, apparently, was only designed to work under water pressure. draining the pool meant the pressure would be too low, and the plaster would crack. (you'd think "okay why not just put a tarp over the filled pool" and, uh, i don't know honestly? my first guess: it's not a rectangular pool, it's got this weird eggplant shape with a circular jacuzzi raised and to the side, and laying tarp over that would be difficult. second: texas gets deep freezes sometimes and still water would freeze and crack the plaster. suffice it to say, at any rate, that we neither drained nor tarped over the pool, and thus had to take care of it.) of course, removing the pool entirely would be nontrivially expensive, cause you'd have to dig the whole damn thing up, disconnect the water lines, the power too (for the pumps, the lights, etc).
i moved out a few years ago. my dad used to say that when i moved out, he'd sell the house and move to a smaller apartment. but he kept the house, and the pool, and is trying to run the whole property by himself, under the stubborn belief that if he prays hard enough i'll come back to him, and he wants to keep the house ready for my return. i don't plan on doing so.
so, unused backyard pools as a symbol of upper-middle-class wastefulness, conformity, and posturing ... i can believe that.
i was going to post just a screenshot of the title as a joke but i kept reading and now i’m completely floored by this theory
#dw about me im ok#i went to therapy for a few years so its not like these are fresh wounds or anything#if anything im worried about oversharing lol#like that one mcdonalds drivethru meme#i mean i AM overhharsing. but im like pseudanonymous here so who cares#uhhhhhh#creative writing exercise i guess?#also infodumping about pools i guess#uhh#man fuck it whatever. send it#listen one of you is gonna be like “i saw this and i wanted to send you a hug”#i can probably guess which specific one of you#i appreciate it but im okay

How an Aledo DWI/DUI Lawyer Can Help Reduce Your Charges
Being charged with DWI or DUI in Aledo is a severe legal matter that can have far-reaching consequences. These charges carry penalties, including fines, license suspension, jail, and a permanent mark on your criminal record. In these circumstances, enlisting the help of a knowledgeable Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer is crucial for effectively navigating the legal landscape, safeguarding your rights, and working towards minimizing or even dismissing the charges, allowing you to focus on rebuilding your future.
Understanding DWI/DUI Charges in Texas
In Texas, a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) typically refers to driving with a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of 0.08% or higher. On the other hand, a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) can apply to drivers under 21 (age) who are caught driving with any detectable amount of alcohol in their system. Both charges are severe offenses under Texas law, but they can carry different penalties depending on the circumstances of the case.
The penalties for DWI/DUI charges can vary based on factors such as:
The driver's BAC level
Prior DWI/DUI convictions
Whether there was an accident or injury involved
Whether there were passengers in the vehicle (especially minors)
For first-time offenders, the consequences include fines, license suspension, alcohol education programs and community service. For repeat offenders or cases involving aggravating factors (such as causing an accident), the penalties can be much more severe, including extended jail time and long-term license suspension.
Given the complexity of DWI/DUI laws in Texas, having a qualified Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer can be critical to navigating the legal system and working toward a favorable outcome.
How an Aledo DWI/DUI Lawyer Can Help Reduce Your Charges
Analyzing the Legitimacy of the Traffic Stop
One of the first steps an Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer will take is to review the circumstances surrounding your traffic stop and arrest. In Texas, law enforcement officers must have reasonable suspicion to pull over a vehicle. This means that the officer must have observed some behavior that suggests a traffic violation or suspicion of intoxicated driving.
If your lawyer finds that the officer lacked reasonable suspicion or conducted an unlawful stop, they may be able to file a motion to suppress any evidence obtained during the stop. For example, if the officer pulled you over without cause or conducted a random stop without any justification, the charges against you could be dismissed or reduced due to a violation of your Fourth Amendment rights.
By carefully scrutinizing the events leading up to the arrest, an experienced lawyer can identify any procedural violations of your constitutional rights, which may lead to a dismissal or reduction of the charges.
2. Challenging Field Sobriety and Chemical Tests
Breathalyzer tests and field sobriety tests are commonly used to find out whether a driver is under the influence of alcohol. However, these tests are not always accurate, and various factors can affect their reliability. For instance, poor weather conditions, uneven surfaces, or medical conditions can impact the results of field sobriety tests.
Additionally, breathalyzer machines must be properly maintained, and the officer administering the test must be well trained in its use. If there is any question about the accuracy of the breathalyzer or other chemical tests, an Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer can challenge the validity of the results. They may be able to demonstrate that the test was faulty or that the results were inaccurate, which could weaken the prosecution's case and lead to a reduction of charges.
By examining the reliability of the tests and questioning the methods used by law enforcement, your lawyer can cast doubt on the prosecution's evidence, which may result in a more favorable outcome for you.
3. Negotiating a Plea Bargain
In many DWI/DUI cases, the prosecution may be willing to negotiate, especially if the proof against you is not particularly strong or if you are a first-time offender. A plea bargain is an agreement between the prosecution and the defense in which the defendant agrees to plead guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for reduced penalties.
For example, your lawyer may negotiate for a reduction in charges from a DWI to a less severe offense, such as reckless driving or a non-alcohol-related traffic violation. This can help you avoid the more severe consequences of a DWI conviction, such as jail time or long-term license suspension.
An experienced Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer will be familiar with local prosecutors and courts, allowing them to negotiate a good plea offer on your behalf. They can advocate for alternative sentencing options, such as community service or alcohol education programs, which may allow you to avoid some of the harsher penalties associated with a DWI/DUI conviction.
4. Minimizing License Suspension and Restoring Driving Privileges
One of the immediate consequences of a DWI/DUI arrest in Texas is the potential suspension of your driver's license. After being arrested, you have a limited time to request an Administrative License Revocation hearing to challenge the suspension of your license.
An Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer can help you navigate this administrative process and advocate for the restoration of your driving privileges. At the ALR hearing, your lawyer can challenge the evidence presented by law enforcement and work to minimize or avoid the suspension of your license. Even if your license is suspended, your lawyer may be able to help you obtain an occupational license, which permits you to drive to and from work or other essential activities during the suspension period.
By working with a skilled lawyer, you can make sure that your right to drive is protected, and your ability to maintain employment and meet other obligations is not unduly affected by a DWI/DUI charge.
5. Providing Expert Knowledge and Guidance Through the Legal Process
An experienced Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer provides the knowledge, expertise, and guidance needed to navigate the complexities of the legal process and work toward a favorable outcome.
Your attorney will handle all outlook of your case, from gathering evidence and preparing legal motions to representing you in court and negotiating with prosecutors. Having a skilled legal advocate on your side can help you avoid common pitfalls and ensure that your rights are protected at every stage of the case.
In addition, he will help you understand the potential consequences of your charges and explain your options for defense. This can assist minimize the stress and uncertainty associated with facing criminal accusations and give you the confidence to make informed decisions about your case.
Conclusion
Facing DWI/DUI charges in Aledo can have serious consequences that affect your personal and professional life. However, by hiring an experienced Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer, you can improve your chances of reducing or mitigating the penalties associated with the charges. From contesting the validity of the traffic stop to negotiating a plea bargain, your lawyer will give experienced information and counsel to defend your rights and work toward a positive resolution. If you are facing DWI/DUI charges, don’t wait—consult with an Aledo DWI/DUI lawyer today to ensure the best possible defense.

CNC Machine Shop Medical Device Manufacturing
CNC Machine Shop Medical Device Manufacturing
Medical device manufacturing is an intensely iterative process. Even if a product makes it through the initial development and design stage, it still needs to pass compliance standards before making it to the market. To do this, companies must follow strict ISO and FDA guidelines. These often include specialized technologies and processes, such as plastic welding or 3D printing of medical-grade polymers.
CNC Machine Shop
Medical device manufacturing creates state-of-the-art tools and implants for monitoring, diagnostics, and therapeutics. As a vital industry, it requires precision, safety, and compliance with regulatory guidelines. Often, this involves partnering with contract CNC manufacturers like Bates Machine nad Manufacturing in Farmersville, Texas who specialize in a wide range of high-precision manufacturing processes.
When engineers look at a bill of materials for any given medical device, they often find components with names like "bracket," "stand," or "adapter." These types of parts typically require sheet metal fabrication processes and/or welding. Moreover, their design must adhere to the medical grade specifications for each of the metals used. For example, springs and wire form material must be made from a special type of metal alloy known as Elgiloy. Injection molding is ideal for many medical devices because it provides a cost-effective alternative to fabrication and machining. However, injection molds can be expensive to produce, especially if they are required for a high volume of production. To avoid this, some companies opt to use 3D printing for low-volume, customized parts.
Plastic Injection Molding
Injection molding involves heating plastic materials until they liquefy, then injecting them into a pre-designed mold. The molten plastic takes on the shape of the mold, creating a finished product. Injection molding is a simple and cost-effective method of shaping raw materials into complex parts, and it can be used for both large and small production runs. The medical industry uses injection molding for electronics that need to be durable and able to withstand sterilization procedures. Many medical devices also require specialized plastics that resist contaminants and can stand up to radiation, chemical exposure, and other harsh environmental conditions. Injection molding is used for plastic components of electronic devices, such as housings that protect and insulate the internal parts. It is also often used to create the plastics that comprise medical instruments and parts for implantable devices. Plastic injection molding services can provide products in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. They can also handle high press tonnage and provide prototyping and low to high-volume production runs.
Assembly
Medical devices need to be manufactured with precision and quality, as well as a high degree of safety. They also need to comply with regulatory standards, which can add a significant amount of cost and time to the manufacturing process. Depending on the device being developed, there may be a number of different assembly processes required to bring it to market. Whether it’s a tongue depressor or an MRI machine, it is important that design engineers understand the various production methods and how they can be used for each specific device in order to optimize the manufacturing process. Medical device contract assembly services can help companies focus on their core competency of designing life-saving medical devices while outsourcing the assembly aspect to a trusted partner. This can help reduce risk, lower costs and reduce the time it takes to get medical devices to market. It is also an effective way to test prototypes and develop new models with the help of a trusted partner.
Testing
A manufacturer that is in the business of assembling and testing medical devices uses a wide range of test equipment. Some tests are highly specialized, while others are more standard in nature. The method of manufacturing for a new device needs to be considered early on in the design phase. This can help the engineering team understand the impact their design decisions will have on production cost. While actual cost modeling may not be possible until the prototype is complete, it’s a good idea to begin putting some numbers down so that the design process can be better focused. The manufacturing process can quickly put the product team over budget if it’s not managed efficiently. An effective test strategy can reduce costs without sacrificing quality and help engineers get their devices to market at speed. LSI’s MES solutions are designed specifically to meet the needs of the medical device industry. They enable manufacturers to simultaneously increase revenues and decrease costs — boosting profit margins. Read the full article

Flanges: An Essential Component in Piping Systems
Pipingprojects.us is a reputable Flanges Manufacturer in USA. We produce and supply a broad range of flanges, including lap joint, weld neck, orifice, slip-on, and others. We manufacture high-quality flanges from a range of materials. Nickel, molybdenum, and chrome are common alloy steel flange materials. Chrome moly flanges are well-known for their outstanding corrosion and oxidation resistance. We are one of the leading flange supplier in USA.
What is a Flange?
A flange is a mechanical component that connects pipes, valves, or other parts in a piping system, providing an easy and safe way to assemble or disassemble these components without the need for welding. Flanges work by bolting two parts together with a gasket in between to create a tight, leak-proof seal.
Types of Flanges
There are several types of flanges, each serving specific purposes based on the requirements of the piping system. The most common types are:
Weld Neck FlangeA weld neck flange is designed with a long tapered hub that provides reinforcement in high-pressure applications. It is welded to the pipe, allowing the flange to maintain its strength under fluctuating pressure conditions. This type is ideal for use in critical services, such as high-temperature and high-pressure environments.
Slip-On FlangeA slip-on flange slides over the end of the pipe and is welded in place. It is easy to install and less expensive compared to weld neck flanges. Slip-on flanges are suitable for low-pressure and low-temperature applications.
Socket Weld FlangeThis type of flange is used for small-diameter pipes and is ideal for high-pressure applications. The pipe is inserted into the socket end of the flange and then welded around the base. Socket weld flanges provide good fatigue resistance.
Blind FlangeBlind flanges do not have a hole in the center and are used to seal off the ends of pipes or valves. They provide easy access for maintenance and repairs. Blind flanges are used in testing and inspection and are well-suited for high-pressure environments.
Threaded FlangeA threaded flange is connected to a pipe without the need for welding, which makes it useful in situations where welding is not possible. It is typically used for low-pressure and low-temperature applications.
Lap Joint FlangeLap joint flanges are used with a stub end and are ideal for applications that require frequent dismantling. They provide flexibility for alignment but do not have much strength under high pressure, which makes them suitable for low-pressure conditions.
We are Flanges Supplier In:
Flanges Supplier in Texas
Flanges Supplier in California
Flanges Supplier in Florida
Flanges Supplier in New York
Flanges Supplier in Los Angeles
Materials of Flanges
Flanges are available in various materials, and the choice of material depends on the application, pressure, and temperature conditions:
Carbon SteelCarbon steel flanges are cost-effective and suitable for a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions. They are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas, where strength is essential.
Stainless SteelStainless steel flanges offer excellent corrosion resistance, which makes them ideal for use in environments where the material will be exposed to moisture, chemicals, or other corrosive substances. They are widely used in chemical and food processing industries.
Alloy SteelAlloy steel flanges are made from a mixture of metals, offering enhanced mechanical properties. They are suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, such as power generation and refinery processes.
Copper AlloyCopper alloy flanges are used for special applications, such as in seawater or marine environments, due to their resistance to corrosion.
Applications of Flanges
Flanges play a crucial role in various industries where piping systems are used. Some common applications include:
Oil and Gas Industry: Flanges are used for connecting pipelines carrying crude oil, natural gas, and refined products.

Asthma Specialist in Frisco: Your Guide to Specialized Care
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects millions worldwide, including children and adults in Frisco, Texas. For individuals with asthma, managing symptoms and avoiding triggers can be an ongoing struggle. This is where an asthma specialist comes in. At the Daffodil Clinic in Frisco, Texas, expert care is available to help you or your loved one manage asthma effectively and improve quality of life.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrow, leading to difficulty breathing. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. These symptoms can be triggered by environmental factors such as allergens, pollution, exercise, or even stress.
Common Asthma Triggers
Allergens: Dust mites, pollen, pet dander
Pollution: Smoke, car emissions, chemical fumes
Exercise: Especially in cold, dry air
Respiratory Infections: Colds or flu
Weather: Cold air or sudden temperature changes
Understanding what triggers your asthma is essential for managing it effectively. Working with a specialist can help you identify and control your specific triggers.
Why See an Asthma Specialist in Frisco?
Asthma can vary from mild to severe, and its management should be tailored to each individual. A general practitioner can provide initial care, but for chronic or severe asthma, an asthma specialist offers more in-depth treatment options. Specialists at Daffodil Clinic in Frisco have the expertise and tools to diagnose, manage, and treat even the most complex asthma cases.
Benefits of Seeing an Asthma Specialist
Accurate Diagnosis: Specialists use advanced diagnostic tools such as spirometry and peak flow tests to assess lung function.
Personalized Treatment: Based on your triggers and the severity of your asthma, a treatment plan is customized specifically for you.
Advanced Medications: Specialists can prescribe inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and other asthma medications to keep symptoms under control.
Asthma Action Plan: You’ll receive a detailed plan to manage your symptoms, outlining when to take medications and what to do in case of an asthma attack.
Regular Monitoring: Specialists provide ongoing care and monitoring to adjust your treatment as needed.
Services Offered by Asthma Specialists in Frisco
At Daffodil Clinic, asthma specialists provide a wide range of services designed to meet the needs of asthma patients. These include:
1. Comprehensive Asthma Assessment
Specialists conduct thorough evaluations of your respiratory health. This includes reviewing your medical history, understanding your asthma triggers, and performing physical exams.
2. Lung Function Testing
Advanced tests such as spirometry and peak flow monitoring are used to measure how well your lungs are functioning. These tests help determine the severity of your asthma and guide treatment decisions.
3. Allergy Testing
Since many asthma cases are triggered by allergens, specialists may perform allergy testing to identify specific triggers, such as pollen or pet dander. Once identified, treatment plans can be modified to help avoid these triggers.
4. Medication Management
Medications are a cornerstone of asthma treatment. Specialists may prescribe long-term control medications such as inhaled corticosteroids to reduce inflammation in the airways. Bronchodilators are often used to relieve symptoms during asthma flare-ups.
5. Asthma Education
Understanding how to manage asthma is critical. At Daffodil Clinic, specialists take the time to educate patients about their condition, teaching them how to use inhalers properly, recognize symptoms, and follow their asthma action plan.
6. Emergency Care Plans
An asthma attack can be life-threatening if not managed quickly. Specialists provide detailed emergency care plans to ensure patients know exactly what to do in case of an attack, reducing the risk of complications.
Types of Asthma
Understanding the type of asthma you have is key to its management. Here are the most common types:
1. Allergic Asthma
Triggered by allergens like dust, mold, or pet dander, allergic asthma is the most common form. Specialists may recommend allergy testing to identify and avoid specific allergens.
2. Non-Allergic Asthma
This type is not triggered by allergens but by other factors such as exercise, cold air, or stress. Treatment focuses on managing these triggers and reducing airway inflammation.
3. Exercise-Induced Asthma
Physical activity, especially in cold air, can cause the airways to narrow, leading to difficulty breathing. Proper warm-up exercises and pre-treatment with medications can help manage this form of asthma.
4. Occupational Asthma
Certain work environments, such as those involving chemical fumes or dust, can trigger asthma symptoms. Asthma specialists can help patients manage symptoms and suggest ways to reduce exposure in the workplace.
5. Severe Asthma
For those with severe asthma, standard medications may not be enough. Daffodil Clinic specialists offer advanced treatment options, such as biologic therapies, which target specific cells and pathways that contribute to inflammation.
Lifestyle Changes to Manage Asthma
Asthma management isn’t just about medications; it also involves making lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of attacks. Here are some tips:
1. Identify and Avoid Triggers
Working with a specialist to identify your asthma triggers is the first step. Once identified, take steps to avoid them. For example, use air purifiers to reduce indoor allergens and wear masks in areas with high pollution levels.
2. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Being overweight can make asthma symptoms worse. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can help improve lung function and reduce symptoms.
3. Practice Breathing Exercises
Breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing and pursed-lip breathing, can help increase lung capacity and improve breathing efficiency.
4. Stay Active
Regular exercise can improve lung function, but it's essential to work with your specialist to ensure you manage asthma symptoms during physical activity. Warm up before exercise, and use prescribed medications as needed.
When to See an Asthma Specialist
If your asthma is not well-controlled, or if you experience frequent flare-ups despite using medications, it's time to consult a specialist. Symptoms that may indicate the need for specialist care include:
Frequent Asthma Attacks: More than two flare-ups a week.
Waking Up at Night: Due to asthma symptoms.
Overuse of Quick-Relief Inhalers: Needing to use inhalers more than twice a week.
Conclusion
Asthma is a manageable condition, but it requires specialized care to keep symptoms under control and prevent complications. At Daffodil Clinic in Frisco, the asthma specialists provide personalized, expert care tailored to each patient's unique needs. From diagnosis and medication management to ongoing monitoring and lifestyle advice, their goal is to help you live a healthier, symptom-free life.

Understanding What Does DWI Mean and What You Need to Know
Understanding what does DWI mean and the associated legal and personal consequences is crucial for anyone who drives. By staying informed about local laws, knowing your rights, and seeking legal assistance when necessary, you can navigate the complexities of DWI charges more effectively.
Whether you're a first-time offender or seeking to understand DWI laws' intricacies, this comprehensive guide will provide you with essential information, local insights, and expert advice on what DWI means and what you need to know.
What is DWI?
DWI stands for Driving While Intoxicated. It is a criminal offense that occurs when a person operates a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) that exceeds the legal limit or while impaired by drugs, encompassing illicit substances, over-the-counter medicines, and prescription pharmaceuticals. The legal BAC limit varies by state but is typically 0.08% for drivers over 21. Generally, the restrictions are lower for business drivers and those under the legal drinking age.
Legal Definitions and Implications
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Limits
The BAC limit is a critical factor in determining whether a driver is legally intoxicated. The standard BAC limit in most states is 0.08%, but variations depend on specific circumstances and local laws. For instance, commercial drivers may face a lower BAC threshold of 0.04%, and underage drivers often have a zero-tolerance policy, meaning any detectable amount of alcohol can lead to a DWI charge.
Drug-Impaired Driving
Driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) is also considered DWI in many jurisdictions. This includes illegal drugs, prescription medications, and even over-the-counter drugs that can impair driving ability. Law enforcement officers may conduct field sobriety tests and request blood or urine samples to determine drug impairment.
Legal Penalties for DWI
Penalties for DWI offenses can vary widely based on the state, the driver's BAC level, and whether it is a first or repeat offense. Common penalties include:
Fines
License suspension or revocation
Mandatory alcohol education or treatment programs
Community service
Jail time
Installation of an ignition interlock device (IID)
Understanding the Arrest Process
Traffic Stops and Field Sobriety Tests
A DWI arrest often begins with a traffic stop. Police officers may pull over a driver for erratic driving, speeding, or other traffic violations. During the stop, officers look for signs of intoxication, such as the smell of alcohol, slurred speech, or bloodshot eyes. If intoxication is suspected, the officer may administer field sobriety tests, including:
The Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test
The Walk-and-Turn test
The One-Leg Stand test
Chemical Testing
If the officer has probable cause to believe the driver is intoxicated, they will request a chemical test to measure the driver's BAC. A blood, urine, or breathalyzer test can do this. Refusing to take a chemical test can result in immediate penalties, such as license suspension, under implied consent laws.
Booking and Bail
After the arrest, the driver is taken to the police station for booking, which involves taking fingerprints, photographs, and recording personal information. The driver may be held in custody until they can post bail or until a court hearing.
Local Focus: DWI Laws and Statistics
State-Specific BAC Limits and Penalties
Each state has its own DWI laws, BAC limits, and penalties. For example, in Texas, the BAC limit is 0.08%, and first-time offenders face fines of up to $2,000, license suspension for up to one year, and possible jail time. More severe punishments, such as lengthier jail terms and fines, are meted out to repeat offenders.
Local Enforcement and Programs
Many states have specific programs to reduce DWI incidents, such as sobriety checkpoints, public awareness campaigns, and increased patrols during holidays and weekends. These programs are designed to deter drunk driving and catch offenders before they cause harm.
DWI Statistics
Understanding local DWI statistics can shed light on the prevalence and impact of drunk driving in your area. For instance, in Texas, there were over 24,000 alcohol-related crashes in 2020, resulting in nearly 1,000 fatalities. These statistics highlight the importance of strict DWI enforcement and public education efforts.
Navigating the Legal System After a DWI Arrest
Hiring a DWI Attorney
Navigating the legal system after a DWI arrest can be complex and overwhelming. Hiring an experienced DWI attorney is crucial for understanding your rights, building a defense, and potentially reducing penalties. An attorney can help you:
Challenge the validity of the traffic stop and arrest
Negotiate plea deals
Represent you in court
Advise on potential defenses, such as improper testing procedures or medical conditions affecting BAC results
Court Proceedings
After a DWI arrest, you will typically have an arraignment where you enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or no contest. If you plead not guilty, your case will proceed to trial, where both sides present evidence and witnesses. The court will then determine your guilt and any applicable penalties.
Expungement and Record Sealing
In some cases, it may be possible to have a DWI conviction expunged or sealed, meaning it is removed from your public record. This can help mitigate long-term consequences, such as difficulties finding employment or housing. Eligibility for expungement varies by state and often depends on factors such as the severity of the offense and the time elapsed since the conviction.

Lying, cheating, and stealing! The dark history of the U. S. intelligence services
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the US government has used a series of lies to paralyze the people from watching the sidelines to waiting for the so-called "herd immunity". When the spread of the epidemic was difficult to cover up, the US government began to blame and question China, and made a series of lies, including "the virus leaked from the Wuhan virus laboratory". In May, U. S. President Joe Biden even asked U. S. intelligence agencies to "step up their efforts" to investigate the source of the novel coronavirus and submit a report within 90 days. Tracing the source of the virus to U. S. intelligence, which uses assassinations, coups, surveillance, and lies, makes science a joke. "We lie, we cheat, we steal. We have a course to teach this. This is the glory of America's continuous exploration and progress."Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former secretary of State and the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), explained the" dark science " of a speech at Texas A & M University in April 2019. In recent years, the most classic case of the United States is the Iraq war in 2003. On February 5,2003, then-U. S. Secretary of State Colin Powell produced a test tube containing white powder at a UN Security Council meeting, claiming to be evidence that Iraq was developing chemical weapons. Later, the American and British allied forces boldly invaded Iraq on this grounds. However, the United States has yet to produce conclusive evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. A 2019 article by Vks News compiled the main timeline of the U. S. government lying about the war in Iraq. In August 2002, then-US Vice President Dick Cheney said: " There is no doubt that the current regime in Iraq has weapons of mass destruction."In September of that year, then National Security Assistant Rice said on CNN (CNN) that the aluminum tubes Iraq bought were" only suitable for the nuclear weapons program."In October of that year, then-US President George W. Bush said that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had a "large stockpile of biological weapons."Until February 2003, when Powell publicly misled the world with false intelligence at the UN Security Council. The American government repeatedly exaggerated or completely fabricated the intelligence conclusions, and many people died in the war because of these lies. One of the most distressing things from 2003 to now is that no major decision maker, even the supporting one, has not apologized for the war they chose to launch that killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Water systems warn Americans could soon see major rate hikes to filter out toxic ‘forever chemicals’
05/26/24 The Hill
In exchange for cleaner water, Americans around the nation may soon have to pay hefty prices.
Let me fix this: In exchange for water without corporate chemicals that cause cancers and child development issues the nation must upgrade the system and citizens will pay.
Water systems are starting to warn residents of massive rate hikes as they prepare to install technology to filter out toxic chemicals in a family known as PFAS.
Utilities from South Florida to upstate New York have warned customers that they could see significant price increases after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated that they remove the substances, which have been linked to a number of cancers and other diseases, from their systems.
Last month, the EPA said it will require utilities whose water systems contain high levels of six types of PFAS to remove them from the water.
PFAS, which stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of thousands of chemicals that have been used to make a variety of nonstick and waterproof products and firefighting foam.
The substances have also become ubiquitous in the environment, due in part to the fact that they tend to persist for a long time instead of breaking down.
Exposure to these so-called forever chemicals has been linked to increased risks of prostate, kidney and testicular cancers, weakened immune systems, high cholesterol, and developmental issues in children.
Now, for the first time, utilities around the nation will be required to get them out of their drinking water to prevent customers’ exposure. But that will come at a price.
Last month, officials with Broward County, a populous South Florida locale, warned residents that those on county water could see “double or triple water rates for users.”
Alan Garcia, director of Broward County Water and Wastewater Services, told The Hill an average monthly bill for water is currently around $26. He agreed that amount could “potentially triple” as the county filters out PFAS — though he said it’s not clear whether rates will actually increase by that much.
His utility has 66,000 accounts — representing an estimated 230,000 people.
Fort Worth, Texas, officials also warned of consequences for ratepayers ahead of the EPA setting the rule last month.
“It’s going to be expensive, and it’s going to impact our ratepayers, and we’re going to be doing everything we possibly can to get some federal support in terms of the funding, but we’re going to have to move forward,” Fort Worth Water Director Chris Harder told Fort Worth Report.
It’s not entirely clear yet which water systems will need to filter out PFAS. The rule gives utilities a few years to test their water to determine if their levels of the chemicals fall above federal thresholds. If they do, utilities will then have to install technology to get rid of them.
Water providers recently settled a major class action lawsuit against manufacturers of PFAS, and chemical giants could have to collectively pay billions of dollars to offset treatment costs.
But, Moody said, the settlements are not expected to be enough to defray the expense.
“If you do get money through it, it’ll likely only help you with maybe a third or a fourth of the costs,” he said.
The added costs do come with the notable benefit of lowering communities’ exposure to the harmful substances: Garcia described PFAS treatment as “probably something important to do.”
But, he said, “we’re sort of paying the price” of companies’ PFAS use.
And, companies are STILL using these chemicals in products.

Celebrating the 2023-24 Outstanding Student Award Finalists
Brandon Matthews, Amelia Nickerson and Scott Fonseka at the Texas Parents Ambassadors Council Meeting luncheon in March 2024 (Not pictured: Vidhyasai "Sai" Annem)
The Outstanding Student Award is a time-honored UT Austin tradition since 1951 identifying high caliber students who model exceptional leadership, scholarship, character and service. Texas Parents honors two recipients and four finalists each year.
Meet this year’s finalists below and find out how they ventured outside their comfort zones to succeed on our vibrant campus through transformative opportunities and communities.
Check out this story on the two award recipients – Florence Fadipe and Tim “Teo” Jakobsen.
Vidhyasai "Sai" Annem
What senior Vidhyasai “Sai” Annem values most about her time at UT Austin is learning alongside community as she aspires to a career in healthcare. Annem, a Biology Honors major, is a recipient of the President’s Award for Global Learning, has contributed to several other research projects and is a patent holder. Outside the classroom, she serves others through various student organizations including the Community Engagement Collective, Health Careers Mentorship Program, and Miracle Messages. Her professional experience includes Project Healthcare at Bellevue Hospital, Impact Corps with the Impact Factory, The Kidney Clinic and Pediatric Center of Round Rock. After graduation from the College of Natural Sciences, she will be completing a master’s in history of science, medicine and technology at Oxford University as a Rotary Global Grants Scholar.
Scott Fonseka
Despite being part of a college cohort that entered the University during a global pandemic, Scott Fonseka took advantage of every opportunity to integrate into campus life. He served as the vice president of the Tejas Club, a student organization with a 100-year history of student leadership that includes 17 student body presidents as former members. As a Canfield Business Honors major, he was the executive vice president of the Honors Business Association’s coordinating alumni-student networking events, a member of the honors program’s alumni advisory board and a business honors peer mentor. After graduation from the McCombs School of Business, he’ll work at Guggenheim Securities in New York City, following internships there, and at Treaty Oak Equity and Oasis Petroleum.
Brandon Matthews
College life taught senior Brandon Matthews that being a chemical engineering student is much more than studying and acing tests. For the aspiring doctor, it’s about thinking critically, discovering one's purpose, challenging assumptions, expanding perspectives and giving back. This mindset drove him to participate in the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Advisory Board and Doctors without Borders, as well as serving as a mentor with the First-Year Interest Group and Ramshorn Scholar Program. His hard work and dedication in the Cockrell School of Engineering classroom resulted in several awards recognizing outstanding chemical engineering students and their research. He plans to apply to medical school after graduation.
Amelia Nickerson
Amelia Nickerson credits leadership experience and involvement in student organizations as having a profound impact on her desire to change the world.
