07/04/2024, Chief Saidou Kabore ousts child marriage from his community
In Burkina Faso, in 6 years, child marriage rate fell from 51.3% to 38.2% among women married before the age of 18, and from 8.9% to 7.8% among women married before the age of 15.
“If we had three or four young women from the village in the civil service, our village would be more developed. Women would care about our well-being more than men. This is my vision of girls’ empowerment,” says Saidou Noom Kaboré, community leader in Bagma, some 20 kilometers south the Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou.
The 65-year-old man has always worked to ensure that girls from his village go as far as possible in school. For several years, he has been resolutely committed to end child marriage, a scourge that could prevent his community from thriving.
Chief Kaboré is on crusade against child marriage
Whenever he has the opportunity, the charismatic community leader brings men, women, boys and girls together under the palaver tree in the middle of the village to discuss girls’ education, which he easily contrasts with child marriage.
“My wish is that our girls succeed because the success of a girl, of a woman, benefits her entire community. That’s why nowadays no girl at school age stays at home. We support them as best we can after they enroll in school,” says Kaboré, standing in the middle of the circle.
At the audience in awe Chief Kaboré explains how to protect girls up to the age of 18 and even beyond, for them to have a happy marriage.
“A girl should not be given into marriage early, much less by force. Even if she is old enough to get married, she should not be given into marriage against her will. Girls are sometimes forced to marry old men. We must let the young girl choose her husband. Thus, her marriage will be filled with love and happiness,” he explains.
In Burkina Faso, the efforts of the government, civil society, communities and community leaders like Kabore have yielded good results. From 2015 to 2021, the proportion of women aged 20 to 24 married before turning 18 fell from 51.3% to 38.2% and that of women aged 20 to 24 who married before the age of 15, fell from 8.9% to 7.8%.
Chief Kaboré works with the NGO Voix Des Femmes [in English, Women’s Voices], thanks to funds from the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage. The programme was launched in 2016 in 12 of the most high-prevalence or high-burden countries, including Burkina Faso. It promotes the rights of adolescent girls to avert marriage and pregnancy and enables them to achieve their aspirations through education and alternative pathways.
In Chief Kaboré’s village, everyone, girls and boys alike, understand the risks of child marriage and the consequences that result from it. Veronique Nikiema, a 14-year-old girl, is keen on her studies and believes that getting married before majority means jeopardizing your future.
“In my opinion, early marriage has many negative consequences. You can't do long studies. At this age, you are not able to carry a pregnancy, nor take good care of yourself, or a baby. You will no longer be able to obtain a degree that will allow you to have a good job,” she explains.
Chief Kaboré’s success is recognized outside Burkina Faso
Saidou Noom Kaboré has saved many girls from child marriage, and his success is known beyond the borders of Burkina Faso. In 2019, Nafissa Ouedraogo fled neighboring Cote d’Ivoire to Bagma to escape child marriage, knowing that Chef Kaboré, who is also her uncle, would protect her.
“I was 14 when I was introduced to a 42-year-old man who already had two wives. I refused his advances. My parents therefore decided to forcefully marry me to this man they had chosen,” says Nafissa, now 19 years old.
When Nafissa's parents went to the village of Bagma to bring her back to Cote d’Ivoire, Kaboré made made them aware of the dangers of child marriage. Later, the man who tried to marry Nafissa was prosecuted for child enticement and sent to jail.
Kaboré's message is heard and assimilated by members of the community and relayed by the young people. For Thomas Kaboré, a young man of 30, thanks to awareness raising, no one will agree to give their daughter into early or forced marriage.
“Some of our aunts and older sisters fled forced marriage. They no longer speak with their families and have never come back to the village. Their children won’t know their maternal families,” he complains.
With UNICEF’s support, Nafissa Ouedraogo followed training sessions and strated her own business, a very popular one with young girls in the village.
“The NGO Voix Des Femmes helped me get started with saponification. I produced and sold liquid soap. I wasn't making huge profits. So, I gave it up and learned how to do henna tattooing,” she says.
Building on his succes, Saidou Kaboré will continue his fight against child marriage. He wants the girls of Bagma to complete their higher education, have university degrees and contribute to building the Burkina Faso of tomorrow.

Well look at this. A new year and another attempt to lose weight. Since last posting I have tried Noom and didn’t like it. Seemed a super expensive calorie counting app.
I am now beginning the journey of Intermittent Fasting. Current weight: 23 stone 5lbs. Far too high. Lockdown is kicking my butt diet and exercise wise but I am determined to make something stick!
We are still using Mindful Chef for main meals, and Huel for other meals. I’ve not really lost weight doing this despite only eating an average of 1800 calories a day. I’m hoping Intermittent Fasting will help reset my metabolism, and kickstart my weight loss. I’ll keep you posted!

One of my biggest challenges with starting my current weight loss journey was just that, actually starting it. In previous years starting was always the easy part. Things would then go well for a few days then my life would go back to normal. But this time it was so different. Even doing it for 2 hours was too much, let alone 2 days. In the end realizing this was part of my road to recovery.
In the months leading up to it I had been very stressed out at work, been feeling really down on myself and the world and just couldn’t bring myself to care about much. But as I took the steps to work through this, I soon came back to life and was ready once again to do something about my lifetime struggle with weight loss. I happened to have a family member and a colleague watching their diet and I think that helped me realise I wasn’t alone.
How should I go about it though? Previously I had tried weight watchers, my fitness pal and diet chef. All definitely worked but of course if it was that easy for me to stick to them or get back into it I would have done it by now! A quote suddenly came into my mind ‘the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result’. So I thought about what I needed to get on the right track.
Weight watchers was good because you got weighed every week keeping you accountable however I didn’t enjoy the actual meetings. The people there and topics discussed just didn’t resonate with me.
Then there was My Fitness Pal which is a calorie counting app which would work well for a few days but my enthusiasm was always short lived.
Then finally Diet Chef in which they provide all the meals and snacks. That was a hail mary before my wedding and worked wonders if you could stand to eat that food. That was the first time I realised how emotional my connection with food was.
That’s how I found Noom. I was searching for what else is out there and of course the beast that is the internet knew what I was looking for and Noom popped up on my Instagram feed.
Noom looked like a perfect mixture of calorie counting, accountability and education. And thus the journey began.

Benjarong Experience at Dusit Thani Manila Offers One of the Best Tasting Menus
I celebrated my birthday this year with a romantic dinner date featuring the highly-acclaimed Benjarong Experience at Dusit Thani Manila. I had read so many positive reviews about this new 8-course Thai tasting menu that was launched early this year so I really wanted to try it for myself.
It’s not easy to book seats for The Benjarong Experience, especially now during the Christmas rush when everyone is going out again, so we were lucky to have gotten seats for their 8:00pm dinner service last week. That's why we braved the December traffic and got ready to experience an evening of authentic Thai cuisine.
Dusit Thani Manila presents the Benjarong Experience: A Curated Tasting Menu Vol. II. This is a second version of their renowned tasting menu with a few courses tweaked and changed from the first version. We reserved their 8-course menu for my birthday dinner.
Benjarong is located at the ground floor of Dusit Thani Manila in Makati City. Discover a fusion of traditional Thai flavors enhanced by modern cooking techniques and venture into the realm of royal cuisine. Complete with a bar, live cooking section, and two private dining rooms, Benjarong is Dusit Thani’s most exciting Thai dining destination, perfect for special occasions. It is open for lunch from 11:30am to 2:30pm and dinner from 5:30pm to 10:00pm.
Benjarong has been given the Thai SELECT award, a program which aims to recognize and endorse Authentic Thai cuisine and quality Thai restaurants and Thai food products all across the globe. This is a seal of approval granted by the Royal Thai Embassy so you can be sure to get the most authentic Thai dining experience whenever you see this award inside a restaurant.
We were really excited for our dinner date and even though we were quite late for our reservation, Benjarong was thankfully able to hold our seats for us.
Special cocktails and mocktails were offered as part of the set menu. My husband had the Tom Yum Gin and Tonic while I had the Benjarong Spritzer. Both were refreshing beverages that also served as our welcome drinks.
These menu cards were also placed on the table, each one showing an illustration of the dishes that we would be enjoying that evening. This special feature is what sets the Benjarong Experience apart from all the other tasting menus we have tried before.
Dusit Thani Manila Thai Executive Chef Watcharaphon “Ja” Yongbanthom personally came out to explain each dish as it was served on our table. Chef Ja has more than a decade of experience creating authentic Thai food for various hotels and resorts. After a guest appearance on Iron Chef Thailand, Chef Ja took over the kitchen of Benjarong in 2015 as Thai Chef de Cuisine, where she elevated the dishes and continues to update the menu, giving a modern twist to centuries-old recipes.
Together with the illustrations on the menu cards, diners can get a better understanding of what goes inside each course and how it is meticulously presented for the Benjarong Experience.
Our first course is an Amuse Bouche appetizer called Pla Samun Prai or Fish with Herbs and Spices. This is a rice wrapper tube filled with fresh salmon, fried tom yum spices, and edible flowers served on top of a betel leaf. There’s also shallot, kaffir lime, galangal, and chili to add some interesting companions to the dish.
You can also write down your remarks on the menu cards if you want to express your ideas about each dish as well. I really liked the crispiness of the rice wrapper together with the soft fresh salmon inside.
Our second appetizer course was the Sai Oua or Northern Thai Sausage made with pork and herbs. The sausages come with Nam Prik Noom which is a green finger chili with garlic and red onion. Beside it is the Khoo Jee or sticky rice made of coconut milk and salt. Then at the bottom is something more familiar to us, a Kab Moo or crispy pork skin. This is a very filling appetizer.
The third course is a salad dish, but definitely not your typical salad. The Yum Sam O is a Pomelo Salad presented quite differently. It comes with this mini basket rice wrapper cake topped with pomelo, chili, cashew nuts, coriander, roasted coconut, and shrimp. Right beside it is a Pomelo Sherbet frozen on top of a lime skin. Eat the crispy salad first, followed by the sherbet which also serves as a palate cleaner.
The fourth course is one of my favorites. This unique and exciting soup dish comes with two major components. The Pu Ma Prao On has a Khao Griep or shrimp and crap dumpling swimming inside a young coconut shell filled with Tom Yum Broth made with coconut water, tom yum spice, and crab. It’s literally an inception of flavors and colors all in one spectacular dish. The broth had just the right spiciness for me and you can even scrape off the young coconut flesh. It’s truly a work of art and is arguably the best Tom Yum soup I have ever had.
We haven’t even started on our main dishes but I was already getting full. The Benjarong Experience makes sure every diner is fully satisfied, unlike other tasting menus which only serve very small portions. Our fifth course is the very pretty Panaeng See Krong Kae or lamb chop with red curry sauce.
This main course comes with a grilled lamb chop served on top of rice noodles, cashew nuts, basil oil, coconut milk, and a thick red curry sauce. The lamb is cooked medium so you can really enjoy the juicy meat. It did not taste gamey at all and went well with the flavorful curry sauce.
Leave some more room because there’s another main course coming. The sixth course is the Khao Phad Tom Yum which comes with a huge piece of tiger prawn sitting on a bed of chili paste. It also served with Tom Yum Fried Rice which is cooked with Jasmine rice, lemongrass, kaffir lime, galangal, chili, lime and red onion.
I loved the grilled tiger prawn and you can balance the spiciness by putting little or more of the chili paste. This is an entire meal in itself so no one is leaving hungry after their Benjarong Experience.
We still have two dessert courses waiting. The Ka Nom Tom is a Coconut Dumpling which is a traditional Thai dessert. The coconut dumpling is made with glutinous rice, coconut, palm sugar, and pandan then topped with edible gold to signify wealth and prosperity. Then there’s the Tim Durian Thed which is a Guyabano Ice Cream wrapped with a coconut jelly shell. This is then adorned with edible butterfly flowers, roasted coconut, mint leaves, mango strips, and caramel popcorn. What a way to end our 8-course Benjarong Experience!
We would like to thank Dusit Thani Manila for inviting us to experience their one-of-a-kind Thai tasting menu. The Benjarong Experience Vol. 2 is available daily at Benjarong but you have to make reservations early because everyone seems to want to try it too. It’s a great bonding activity for families and an even better romantic dinner date option for couples. We highly recommend it!

Carbon-plated stainless steel will stay sharp over time, but go to a specialty store to find the best match for you. Choose a knife that you feel comfortable handling. It should feel balanced in your hand, easy to hold and control, not too heavy, but definitely not flimsy. Believe us, you’ll be using it a lot, so take good care of it.

Silicone Spatula
A silicone spatula is crucial for scraping out the food processor or the sides of the mixing bowl, swirling frosting onto a cake or folding egg whites into cake batter. Ah, the classic Dutch oven, another cast iron essential. Look for a 5 or 6 quart if you cook for a small crew, or go big with a 7 or 8 quart and feed a crowd. This pan can go in the oven or on the stovetop, so you can sear meat and then slowly cook a stew for hours in a low oven. (It’s like the original slow cooker.) You can also use your Dutch oven as an alternative to the large sauce pan above. And you can bake bread with a super crackly crust in your D.O. They’re expensive, so save your pennies and use it every chance you get.

They won’t pick up stains or odors. I have a single large metal mixing bowl for cake mixes, chopping up salads, or oiling down veggies. it might not seem like a big deal, but i had a really great recipe from home chef tonight, all the flavors i love, which tend to lead to me doing what noom would have called “storm eating,” aka just shoveling food into my mouth until i’m stuffed because it tastes so good and i can’t stop myself. but i didn’t. i had one reasonably sized helping.
it makes me feel some kind of way. good? but also frustrated. because it was good and i wanted more. but i didnt NEED more. its not like i was starving. i ate until i felt satisfied, or at least my stomach felt satisfied. my mind is screaming at me for not having more. and thats the hard part. i wanted more. i still want more. hell i could still have more; its just sitting in a container, waiting for it to cool fully. i could heat up more.
but i’m not going to. because i have to be stronger than my mind just WANTING more because it tastes good. its not like i can’t have it again. i’ll have leftovers tomorrow or saturday.
i just hope its not always so hard and i hope my mind doesn’t always go YOU’RE DEPRIVING ME OF SOMETHING I WANT and just chills out.

Mine is not a new story. All my life I have been fat. I’ve tried to lose it, I’ve hated myself, I’ve ignored it and I’ve also tried to love myself no matter how I look. Nothing ever lasted. In fact recently my motivation was at an all time low. I couldn’t even make the damn diets last more then 2 hours! I just hit an absolute low. I could recognize it was happening but didn’t have it in me to change anything.
Then a couple of months ago the dark clouds started to part and as my thinking became clearer a sentence came into my mind. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result. I knew then that I had to try something new, I at least owed it to myself to give it a go!
I saw on my instagram feed (the all seeing and all knowing) an ad for the Noom app. I had a quick read of how it worked and decided that it was worth a shot. The worst that could happen was nothing and quite frankly I was doing that well enough already so what was the harm.
I am now almost 4 weeks into it and have lost 2.3 kgs which I’m pleased about. Which means I’m 1/8th the way to my goal, or just over 12% to my goal or have lost 4 and a half bricks of butter, however I want to look at it it’s a loss and I know I have put the work in for it. What I also know is that I’m 7/8ths away from my goal and this is not going to be an easy ride. One thing that does make me feel better is that I’m armed with a different weapon this time with my app. Every day every week there are things to engage with and learn on the app.

p.s. Noom just happens to be my weapon of choice, this isn’t an ad for them in any way, I just mention what is helping me at the moment. I’ve previously done Weight Watchers and Diet Chef and lost the weight (though clearly I put it back on otherwise we wouldn’t be here).
