Devshayani Ekadashi Fast Worship Method and Welfare Mantra
Learn how to worship and chant the mantra for this important Hindu festival
Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the most important Hindu festivals of the year. It marks the beginning of the four-month-long Chaturmas, a period of spiritual introspection and self-purification. During this time, many Hindus keep a strict fast and perform pujas and rituals.
The name Devshayani Ekadashi literally means "the eleventh day of the waxing moon when Vishnu sleeps." This is because on this day, Vishnu enters deep yogic sleep, known as yoga nidra. It is said that during this time he rests on Anant Shesha Nag, who floats on the cosmic ocean.
Observance of Devshayani Ekadashi is believed to confer great spiritual benefits. It is said to purify the soul of impurities, remove obstacles and provide moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Devshayani Ekadashi is worshiped in the evening. It begins with prayers and mantras to Vishnu. Then the clay image of Vishnu is bathed and decorated with flowers and offerings. The puja ends with the chanting of the Kalyankari Mantra, a powerful mantra that is said to bring blessings and good fortune.

Why Lord Vishnu sleeps for 4 months?
Lord Vishnu sleeps for four months on Devshayani Ekadashi of Ashadh month. During which no auspicious work is done in Hinduism. Like marriage, birth ceremony, sacred thread ceremony, house warming and shaving etc. The month in which Lord Vishnu is in deep sleep is called Chaturmas.
From this day all the work of running the universe is removed from the shoulders of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva takes over his work. In simple words, Lord Vishnu goes to Patal Lok for these four months. And the entire work of creation goes into the hands of Lord Shiva.
According to Scriptures, once a king named Bali had captured all the three worlds. Then Indradev approached Lord Vishnu for help. On which Lord Vishnu took an incarnation named Vamana. And after taking the Vamana avatar, Lord Vishnu came in the guise of a Brahmin to King Bali to beg for alms.
And asked for three steps in charity. During this, Vishnu ji measured the earth and the sky in just two steps. After this Vishnu ji asked King Bali where he should take his third step. On which King Bali asked him to put the third step on King Bali's head.
After which all the pride of King Bali was shattered and due to the kindness and charitable nature of King Bali, Lord Vishnu asked King Bali to ask for a boon. After this, King Bali asked Lord Vishnu to return to Patal Lok.
During this, Lord Vishnu told King Bali that he would stay in Patal Lok from Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla month of Ashadha to Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla month of Kartik. Since then, every year in the month of Ashadh, Lord Vishnu goes to Chirnidra from Devshayani Ekadashi and no religious work is done during this time.

Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi: The Divine Awakening and How You Can Partake in a Sacred Tradition of Compassion
Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi, falling on the eleventh lunar day (Ekadashi) of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month, marks the day Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month slumber. From the Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to this day, known as Chaturmas, religious restrictions discourage auspicious activities like marriages, with devotees dedicating this time to spiritual practices and personal reflection. The awakening of Lord Vishnu on Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi reopens the gates for auspicious activities and holds immense spiritual significance.
On this sacred day, devotees fast, pray, and seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings, believed to bring abundance in wealth, grains, and happiness. Fasting on Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi is said to grant devotees special divine blessings. Here’s how this revered day is traditionally observed and how the virtuous act of supporting and feeding cows at Shree Krishnayan Gauraksha can add deeper meaning to this Ekadashi.
Observing Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi
Fasting on this day is not just a ritual but a test of one’s devotion. From the tenth day, or Dashami Tithi, devotees begin preparing for the fast by adopting a sattvic diet, abstaining from onions, garlic, and other tamasic foods. On Ekadashi, they observe a strict fast, often without water, and break their fast on the following day, Dwadashi, after sunrise.
The spiritual significance is deepened by the act of staying awake all night, singing bhajans, and praising Lord Vishnu, symbolizing an awakened state of mind and spiritual connection. Traditionally, after the fast, devotees feed Brahmins as an act of charity, expressing gratitude and fostering goodwill.
The Essence of Compassion: Gaushala and Gausewa
On Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi, giving charity is considered particularly auspicious. At Shree Krishnayan Gaushala, we embody this spirit of compassion by providing a sanctuary for over 21,000 destitute cows. These gentle beings, rescued from harsh and often life-threatening conditions, are given a second chance to live in peace and security. The gaushala offers these cows nutritious fodder — a wholesome mix of wheat, mustard cake, green grass, husk, and jaggery — along with plentiful water and wide spaces to roam freely.
Our dedicated team of gausewaks works day and night to care for the cows, ensuring they receive both love and medical attention from qualified veterinarians. By supporting such initiatives, you contribute directly to the well-being of these animals and align with the spiritual virtues of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi, drawing blessings not only for yourself but also for these sentient beings.
How You Can Participate in the Spirit of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi
Embracing the teachings of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi goes beyond personal fasting and prayer. This Ekadashi, consider extending your compassion through an act of gausewa (service to cows) at Shree Krishnayan Gaushala. Every contribution, whether feeding a cow, adopting one for a lifetime, or donating toward her care, brings untold blessings and a sense of fulfillment, knowing that you have become part of something divinely inspired and larger than yourself.
The tradition of gausewa is deeply rooted in Hindu values, where caring for cows symbolizes nurturing life, nature, and spirituality. Many believe that by feeding cows, especially on such an auspicious day, they invite peace, prosperity, and positive energy into their lives. The satisfaction of supporting these gentle beings in a nurturing environment can make this Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi truly memorable.
Join Us in This Divine Cause
At Shree Krishnayan Gaushala, your support goes beyond ritual and transforms into a powerful act of kindness. Join us in observing this auspicious day with deep gratitude and compassion, and help us give thousands of helpless cows a chance to live with dignity and love. Together, let’s celebrate Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi in its true spirit — through devotion, service, and a commitment to protecting life.
In a world that often overlooks the vulnerable, Shree Krishnayan Gaushala offers an opportunity to be their voice, their protector, and their hope. This Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi, let your faith inspire action. Whether through fasting, prayer, or supporting a cow, each act of devotion brings us closer to the divine blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Uthana Ekadashi: A Day of Spiritual Awakening and Devotion
Introduction
Uthana Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhani Ekadashi or Deva Uthani Ekadashi, is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. It marks the end of the four-month long Chaturmas period, during which Lord Vishnu is believed to be in a state of deep slumber. The day holds special significance for devotees, as it is considered the time when Lord Vishnu awakens from His cosmic sleep. Uthana Ekadashi falls on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Kartika, which typically occurs in October or November.
Significance of Uthana Ekadashi
The Awakening of Lord Vishnu According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, rests during the Chaturmas, a period of four months starting with Ashadha Ekadashi and ending on Uthana Ekadashi. During this time, it is believed that the world is in a dormant phase, and Lord Vishnu remains in a state of sleep. Uthana Ekadashi symbolizes His awakening, bringing vitality, prosperity, and blessings to the world.
End of Chaturmas and Beginning of Auspicious Events The end of Chaturmas marks the beginning of many auspicious events and religious activities. Devotees believe that fasting, prayer, and spiritual practices performed on Uthana Ekadashi bring divine blessings and remove obstacles in life.
The Importance of Fasting Fasting on Uthana Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that observing a strict fast, consuming only fruits, milk, and other sattvic (pure) foods, purifies the mind and body, leading to spiritual awakening. Devotees pray to Lord Vishnu on this day for peace, prosperity, and protection from all evil.
Lord Vishnu's Blessings It is said that anyone who fasts and prays with devotion on this day will receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The soul is said to be freed from the cycle of birth and rebirth, ensuring liberation (moksha) in the afterlife.
Rituals and Observances on Uthana Ekadashi
Morning Rituals On the morning of Uthana Ekadashi, devotees take a holy bath to purify themselves. They then perform a special pooja (prayer) to Lord Vishnu, offering flowers, fruits, and sandalwood. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Bhagavad Gita is common on this day.
Fasting and Prayers Devotees fast throughout the day, abstaining from grains and other tamasic foods. They may consume fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The fast is typically broken after sunset, with a special prayer to Lord Vishnu for forgiveness and blessings.
Spreading Joy and Charity As a part of the celebrations, devotees also engage in acts of charity, offering food, clothes, and donations to the needy. It is believed that such acts of kindness earn the devotee the grace of Lord Vishnu.
Significance in Different Regions
While Uthana Ekadashi is widely celebrated across India, its observance is especially prominent in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and South India. Temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu are beautifully decorated, and special events, prayers, and rituals are organized. In some places, grand processions and cultural programs are held to mark the occasion.
Conclusion
Uthana Ekadashi is a day that combines devotion, fasting, prayer, and a deep connection with Lord Vishnu. Observing the rituals and fasting with sincerity brings spiritual fulfillment and blessings. The awakening of Lord Vishnu on this day signifies a renewal of life, a reminder of the eternal power of the divine, and an opportunity to experience peace, joy, and spiritual growth.
