I'm reading the first issue of the new Batgirl title, and I need to gush about the art. Just look at this spread:

(low quality phone photo bc I bought the physical floppy instead of the digital issue. sorry etc)

The cinematic composition! The bold colours! The striking contrasts! This art team (Takeshi Miyazawa on art, Mike Spicer on colours) absolutely knocked it out of the park.

And this is IN ADDITION to the story. Which is exactly what I would have wanted in a Cass Cain Batgirl at this point in her history - a conflicted mother-daughter team-up with Lady Shiva that portrays the anger, betrayal, and very reluctant love between her and Cass. It's only the first issue, but there are already signs that maybe both Cass and Shiva are going to be at least a little complex in their characterizations - or at the very least, there may be room to read some type of depth in both of them. Hopefully we can avoid the Evil Mother tropes, despite Shiva being a villain and a killer and not the world's greatest mom. Hopefully Cass's conflict with her will not focus only on the no-killing rule (though I don't want to see Cass break it).

Also, Cass is finally back to being Bruce's daughter again!!!

I have high hopes for this run. HIGH. HOPES.

I'm my ongoing obsession w Spiders, I've decided I'm gonna start ranking the outfits of my favorite spiders, starting with..

BEN REILLY

We're skipping his first suit its just a copy of the base Spider-Man, if I do one of these for Pete then I'll share my thoughts there. But for his first real suit..

The Return Suit: 7/10

Upon the return of Ben to the Spider landscape he donned a spare Spidey mask alongside casual clothing for this suit. I like the idea of it, and im not gonna judge it too harshly cause it ain't like he designed this, boy pulled it out of a closet. (Ben put your grippers away though dear god)

Scarlet Spider: 10/10

Peak 90s design, ripped slutty crop top hoodie? Check. Giant spikey eyes? Check. Belts around his ankles because fuck you? Check. Its a classic design and god DAMN they did it justice in Across The Spiderverse

All of Ben's sketchbook suits: ?/10

Sensational Spider-Man: 12/10

YEAHHHHHHH. A perfect suit. The bigger spider and the exposed webshooters from the Scarlet Spider suit work so well here. This is the gold standard for alt Spidey suits and deserves to stand next to the original.

The Jackal: 6/10

Its a neat look, but like- it's a red suit with a cool mask. There isn't much here to talk about?

Scarlet Spider (2017): 3/10

Why. Did. You. Give. Him. Lips.

Why. Trying to build the hoodie into the suit just- doesn't work. Why do the gloves have random lines between the fingers? It just feels like a bootleg Spider-Man you'd see at a thrift store.

Beyond Suit: 8/10

I appreciate the fact they fixed his legs from the sensational suit to give him full boots, but the arm webbing and the off center spider keeps it from being as good as the last time Ben donned the Spider-Man mantle.

Chasm: 5/10

So story reasons that I hate Chasm alone. This suit just is kindof a mess. The mask is really messy and im not a huge fan of how the spider looks or the fact his lenses are connected on the mask.

Something that just made me a lot more chill about seeing other peoples questionable takes in the depths of comics fandoms here is that, you know, with like tv shows or movies when there’s differing takes, you can ask yourself with great despair “did we even watch the same thing?” and you DID but people are people.

Whereas with comics, particularly character analysis as opposed to like. Event review. You sit there looking at some wild (to you) conclusion someone else has drawn and you ask, “did we even read the same comics?!” And like.

Honestly?

Chances are pretty good that… no. You didn’t. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
