I'm not even that committed a fan of always sunny but even I can immediately pull up two pieces of evidence that say that chase utley should never have thought mac was a kid...

1. I'm pretty sure in the World Series defense back in season 5 mac said he had been writing to utley every day for years and it seems like he's continued that so that's more than 11 years of writing (probably way more)

2. chase utley already met "mac." He was in "the gang gets stranded in the woods" and he met dennis as mac so at the very least he should've known mac was an adult from that and if he does know mac from that letter in the video then he should at least vaguely remember him from the charity event where "mac" got super drunk and fought with his friend

Idk they could just not be caring about continuity anymore but also they still have continuity with side characters so I don't really know how this could've slipped through. Especially since chase utley played himself in both episodes like you think the actual guy might remember too (and idk I'll have to watch it again but the letter video looked like old footage that could've been taken in season 6)

macs long distance boyfriend is going to be ryan reynolds but ryan reynolds is catfishing him as chase utley so like mac thinks he’s dating chase utley when it’s really just ryan and then mac basically stalks chase and chase finds out and yells at mac

whole time dennis can’t figure out why his mental health has gotten SO BAD lately but then dennis “miraculously” recovers when mac finds out he’s been catfished and obviously breaks up with ryan reynolds bc he isn’t chase utley and he goes back to being sadly single

Penance is about a disgraced journalist attempting to revive his career by writing a book about a teenage girl who was murdered by three of her classmates. it's an examination of the true crime genre and all its failings but it also depicts 2012-2016 Tumblr with a level of accuracy that almost made me nauseous. to say eliza clark was in the trenches would be a colossal understatement. like, one of the killers is in the true crime fandom where she writes fic about a pair of (fictional to us, but real in-universe) school shooters AND YES I KNOW HOW INSANE THAT SENTENCE IS I PROMISE YOU IT'S A THOUSAND TIMES WORSE IN THE BOOK. look:

they include an excerpt from her fic. This was the point where I nearly levitated out of my seat on the train and up through the roof because I could not believe what I was reading. but don't worry, it gets worse! they included her arguments with reviewers!

this is followed by actual descriptions of commonly accepted fanon in the school shooter fandom. anyway I brought it up because I know the carver edlund/true crime fandom discourse would break even the most hardened of tumblrinas.
