It was just a normal afternoon—the air was calm, quiet, cool with the shy onset of autumn. The park was not deserted, as you sat on the swings, using a stick to trace patterns on the ground. Or rather, Wiccan symbols that the town children always saw you making (and made a point to stay away from you about).

It was only when you skipped home, sage and stick in hand, that you saw the door blown down, a random boy in the hallway all tied up, and your mother going off her rocker.

“Mama?” You questioned, confused.

“No time to talk, hon, grab that bag and let’s get in the car,” she said, pointing at your school bag on a chair.

“But mama we don’t—“ you began, confused, but she simply grabbed your bag, picked you up and whisked you away into the car. Or rather, Teen’s car.

“You trust me?” She asked, buckling you in.

You nodded, fidgeting with your stick. “Mhm,” you hummed.

She smiled and winked, linking her pinky with yours, kissing it gently. “Mama always protects you, okay?”

“Okay,” you giggled.

“So…she’s yours?” Teen asked, pointing at you in the backseat where you sat, playing with some sort of wooden puzzle from your bag.

“No,” Agatha said, sarcastically. “I picked up a random six year old in the park cause I’m a pedophile,”

At his gobsmacked expression, she frowned, irritated, “Of course she’s mine, pet, look! Don’t you see the resemblance?”

You look at Teen through the rearview mirror and smiled angelically. Apart from maybe your facial structure you took after Rio more than her.

“Doesn’t matter, just drive,” she sighed, irritated.

The first stop was Lilia’s house, which seemed like a nice place. Except the energy felt a little too buzzed for your liking.

“Alright hon, you don’t talk unless I tell you to, okay?” Agatha said, kneeling at your level, a smile on her face. “And if Mama makes a silly voice, you don’t question it,”

You nodded, smiling at her. “Okay, mama!”

“That’s my girl,” she said, pinching your cheek gently, standing up and putting her hair in a bun before wrapping a shawl around her shoulders.

The place was as odd as its energy, with you disliking the sound of clattering beads from the bead curtain, hand holding your favourite stick (rather a crooked wand Agatha didn't use anymore).

"Welcome to the curious," said Lilia, appearing from the back room.

You looked at the lady, frowning, "You're kooky,"

"Now, now, sweetheart, we ain't rude to the nice lady," Agatha spoke in a thick Southern accent. "Good day, madam, Oh. Thank you so much for seein’ us. We are hopin’ for a miracle today,"

You looked at Agatha weirdly, confused with her accent. She never talked like this usually...did she?

"This is my boy, Beauford, and my princess Charlotte here," she smiled, pointing at you both. When Teen went to protest, she shut him up, "He doesn’t talk much. He’s got social anxiety. Their daddy recently passed, and we miss him somethin’ awful."

A long while and several witches later, you stood in Agatha's basement with the other witches, happily vibing with their rendition of the Ballad. However, just as the door made itself known, the Salem Seven crashed into the house, Teen coming downstairs in a flurry of panic to scoop you up and dash down the Road's entrance.

The first trial passed, with only one casualty--Mrs. Davis, but it left you mostly shaken up. You had never seen so many witches hallucinate single-handedly before.

The forest was quiet, the only sound being that of the shovel scraping the ground as Teen dug a grave for Mrs. Hart.

You knelt next to the dead woman, tilting your head as you peered at her, poking her with your stick gently.

“Mama?” You asked, looking at Agatha. “Mama, she feels very not-alive,”

“Yeah hon,” she smiled, side-eyeing Jen. “Because Jen didn’t give her enough antidote so she is now not-alive,”

“Are you really badmouthing me to a six year old, Agatha?” Jen deadpanned. “How petty can you be?”

“Very, apparently,” Lilia rolled her eyes.

“Kooky lady is correct,” you nodded, earning a snicker from Alice.

“I’m not kooky!” Lilia scowled at you, only to receive an angelic smile in return.

You hummed to yourself as you walked around the clearing while the adults and Teen argued.

At the mention of an incomplete coven, you tugged at Agatha’s sleeve, asking softly, “Mrs. Hart wasn’t a witch, so if this is the Witch’s Road, can’t you call for a green witch?”

“Yes, thank you, little one!” Teen said, pointing at you. “How does a six year old have more brains than you all combined?”

“People have told me I’m something called ‘insightful’,” you shrugged.

“More like irritating,” Lilia scowled, looking at you.

“She isn’t the one bickering like a bunch of old ladies, is she?” Agatha shrugged. “Now come on, we have a spell to cast. Vamonos,”

You skipped after her, excitedly, helping her map out the person shape on the ground with your stick.

“Am I helping nice, mama?” You asked her, grinning proudly.

She nodded, fixing the outline, kneeling at the border of it. “Oh absolutely, sweet girl. The most helpful out of all these idiots,”

You smiled angelically, making her mutter, “You sure as hell didn’t get that smile from me, that’s for sure,”

As the witches gathered to start their spell, you stood with them—young magic was the most effective, honestly.

“May she be strong and wise, and the best at her craft,” said Lilia, placing down a crystal.

“May she be smart and not annoying,” said Agatha, placing another thing down, adding, “And also, not super political,”

“May she be pleasant looking,” said Jen, wrinkling her nose.

“Can she bring some Advil?” Alice sighed, placing her crystal down.

“Can she annoy the kooky lady?” You asked as Agatha tapped your shoulder to put your offering down. “May she be…fun,”

“I’m not kooky!” Lilia snapped at you.

“Are too!” You giggled, sticking your tongue out at her.

“Y/n, for the love of god just behave,” Agatha sighed. “I can’t deal with this right now,”

“Now what?” Teen interjected.

“Now we wait,” said Lilia. “True witchcraft takes time. The spell must marinate, gestate—“

She was interrupted by a hand sticking out of the mud behind you all, causing a scream to erupt from everyone.

Agatha shoved you back, arms out protectively as you giggled excitedly at the sight.

“Agatha, what did you do?!” Jen exclaimed.

“What do you mean, what did I do? This was very clearly a group effort!” She protested.

“It’s so silly!” You squealed, laughing at the cracking noises the witch’s bones made as she emerged from the ground.

“Your kid is a psycho like you!” Jen said, judging you as you laughed like this was a particularly funny episode of Bluey.

“She’s got character!” Agatha retorted sharply.

“Oh, my God, did we turn Mrs. Hart into a zombie?” Teen exclaimed.

“What spell did we cast?” Alice cried out.

Panicked and looking into Teen’s spell book. “Why is the print so small?” She wailed.

The witch righted herself, and you peeked from behind Agatha, intrigued and suddenly elated to see who it was.

Mami.

“MAMI!” You squealed, about to run to Rio, happy beyond belief.

“Heard you guys were having a party?” Rio gasped. She looked over at you, winking, “Hola nena,”

“How did you…” Agatha breathed, horrified, keeping you back despite your indignant squirming.

“I was in the neighborhood,” she gasped, opening her palm to reveal a flower. “Surprise. My lady,”

Agatha snatched the flower, screamed, and tried to attack her, but everyone held her back, Jen and Alice keeping her in check.

“We just summoned her!”

“We need her,”

As Agatha stormed off, Teen followed. You didn’t care about her little temper tantrum. It wasn’t the first you’d seen her have.

You were more concerned about Rio.

She was your Mami, the one who would play pranks on Agatha with you, the one who could calm you down in even the worst meltdowns, the one who accompanied you to the park every time the bullying got bad. Your Mami.

You hugged her tightly. She smelt the same, she felt the same. She was soft, she was the comforting kind of cold. She smelt like earth and old books and cinnamon, a scent so familiar that it made you bury your face into her robe to simply take in her scent.

“Nena,” she laughed. “You got so big,”

“I’m six, mami!” You gave her a broad grin, looking up at her.

“I guess we know now where the psycho comes from,” Jen muttered.

“Hey, what’s up, I’m Rio,” she said, nodding at them, still holding you close.

The three gave her a quiet, somewhat terrified and awkward greeting, before she gave them a cheeky grin and went after Agatha.

“So what do you think, can we trust her?” Alice asked.

“Agatha hates her, I’d say that goes in the ‘pro’ column,” Lilia shrugged.

“I mean…the kid thinks she’s legit,” Alice noted.

“The kid’s as psycho as she is,” Lilia scoffed. “Like calls to like and all that,”

“You’re just salty cause she calls you kooky,” Alice grinned.

“I’m not!”

Meanwhile, you walked with Rio, playing with her fingers gently as you talked her ears off.

The conversation eventually took a serious turn as you both paused and waited for the others.

“Mami,” you said, kicking a stone as you walked with her. “Mami, why did you leave me and go? Did I do something? Did mama? Did Nicky?”

Rio sighed. She knew this question was inevitable. She couldn’t avoid it, she knew that.

She stopped and knelt to your height, holding your arms in a gentle grip, making the others pause in their tracks.

Her voice was so soft, so gentle. “Mira, mi amor,” she said softly. “Sometimes…things happen which can’t be fixed unless one person removes themselves from the equation. It was not yours or Nicky’s fault, alright?”

She sensed your apprehension. An apprehension that broke her heart because she didn’t want to leave. She had to. She had no choice.

“Is it a grown up thing?” You whispered, voice barely audible.

“It is, nena,” she nodded. “But you’re still a little girl, you’re small. You won’t understand even if I explained it simply. I want you, my smart, sweet girl, to know that mami going away was not your fault,”

She thought before adding, “I am sorry for leaving, though. Mi vida, lo siento,”

It made you feel better, indeed. “It’s okay, Mami,” you smiled. “I’m happy you’re with me now,”

She grinned and scooped you up, putting you in her shoulders deftly, making you squeal with happiness. There she was, fun Mami. Your Mami.

“Come on now, let’s make some trouble,” she grinned up at you, winking. “Mami’s not going anywhere anytime soon,”

“What if I get hurt?” You asked quietly.

“Then mami’s always here to protect you,” she grinned, squeezing your hand gently.

You nodded, trusting her words.

The Road was long and it was hard.

But maybe things wouldn’t be too bad.

Mami and Mama protected you. Always.

Favourite colour and why? blue - it reminds me of the sea, it feels calm and sad but happy too. I like the sound of the word. I also love pink, because it's a happy and bright.

Five comfort movies: i don't really watch movies...

Favourite season and why? winter! i like when it's cold and you can wrap up in blankets; i like those really cold mornings and cold nights and the frost and ice; less people are out when you go to parks/outdoor places; there are several things that can't happen in winter and those things give me anxiety; i have work and while it's stressful, it's not intense like other parts of the year

Favourite book(s): Villette by Charlotte Bronte, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte are my top three

favourite aesthetic(s)and why? I think 'cottagecore' is pretty cute, or like, space aesthetics or 'arty' ones - oh, and like, horribly gaudy rainbow ones. Idk all the proper names but those ones just appeal to me

Favourite genre and why? It depends on what it is, but I'll talk about books because TV tastes are just - random. With books, I like 'literary' fiction, classics, historical fiction and short stories too? I guess I like the analyse stuff when I read, to look at the layers and structures, and I find those genres lean more easily towards that.

Favourite clothes style: honestly shifts between girly dresses and fluffy coats to dungarees, oversized shirts and DMs

Favourite music genres: most of my favourite artists fit under the 'indie' category somewhere

Jonah Hauer-King can currently be seen swimming up a storm alongside Halle Bailey in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” but for his next project he’s part of a different world – “World on Fire.”

The PBS and BBC drama series has released first look images from its upcoming second season, showing Hauer-King as a grimy pilot called Harry in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II.

In the show, which was created by Peter Bowker, he is joined by “The Crown’s” Lesley Manville, Parker Sawyers (“A Discovery of Witches”) and Eugénie Derouand (“The Advent Calendar”).

In new images from Season 2 Manville, who plays Robina, looks elegant in a 1940s hair-do and outfit while Sawyers, who plays Albert, is pictured looking concerned, a Nazi flag visible behind him. Meanwhile Derouand is clad in a nurse’s outfit as Henriette.

Also returning for the second season are Blake Harrison (“A Very English Scandal”) as Stan, Julia Brown (“Shetland”) as Lois, Zofia Wichłacz (“Receptura”) as Kasia, Cel Spellman (“Better”) as Joe, Yrsa Daley-Ward (“Outer Range”) as Connie, Eryk Biedunkiewicz as Jan, Ewan Mitchell (“House of the Dragon”) as Tom and Mateusz Więcławek (“Kurier”) as Grzegorz.

“World on Fire” tells the story of a group of RAF pilots sent to destroy German bombers in the early 1940s.

“Telling the story of World War II through the eyes of ordinary people, following intrepid young heroes fighting for freedom, Season 2 will take viewers from the war-torn streets of Britain deep into Nazi Germany, the resistance within occupied France, and the brutal sands of the North African desert – where troops struggle to adapt to a very different kind of combat,” reads the logline.

Joining the second season are Mark Bonnar (“Guilt”), Gregg Sulkin (“Runaways”), Ahad Raza Mir (“Resident Evil”) and Miriam Schiweck (“Der Staatsanwalk”).

The Universal Protectors sat on the upper deck of the Starsong, all surprisingly chilling and doing their own thing.

"Remember when you guys asked what or who I was in a Past Life?" Paige asked suddenly. Everyone looked at her.

"Yeah," Natalia said, "did you find out anything?" The Evaran nodded as she set her phone in her lap.

"I was known as the Wolf Mage of Mercy," she said, "but not only that, I was a Skylian, and a Wayfaran."

"Whaaaat?!" Shiloh, Thomas and Demetrius exclaimed, their jaws dropping.

Paige laughed, "why is that so shocking? I had two separate past lives!"

"Yeah, but you were a freaking mage!" Natalia replied, throwing her hands up, "I didn't even know that was possible!"

Gregory smirked, "regardless, it's awesome, Paigey!"

I decided to use a fancy planner to keep track of my reading this year and I started off on my usual pace, but with quarantine and a slew of so much literary goodness, I'm on track for a new reading record. I knew this year was going to be a banner year for Black SciFi/Fantasy and I wasn't disappointed. So, of course, this list will be full of Black SciFi/Fantasy because I couldn't get enough!

Madoka Magica Anniversary Analysis: Part 3

The part where the fanbase lost their heads.

(spoilers for the show if for some reason you haven’t watched it in the 10 years since it came out.)

We open in Kyousuke’s hospital room with Sayaka hiding just outside the door for a moment while she gathers her courage. Kyouske is happy to see her and her gift of CDs, offering to share the earbuds. It’s clear from her reaction to that Sayaka has a crush. It’s clear from Kyouske’s reaction that he is completely oblivious.

We get a flash of a much younger Kuouske performing before a concert hall while a young Sayaka watches. We cut back and Kyouske is looking away from the camera (and Sayaka) it doesn’t hid his tears. A shot of his bandaged hand tells us all we need to know. (Cue Connect)

After the opening ends we launch immediately into Mami conjuring her giant cannon, winking at the camera, and blowing away a hapless familiar. Sayaka complements Mami on her showmanship but she reminds her that what they are doing is dangerous. Madoka comments on the lack of Grief Seed.

Kyubey explains that since what Mami just destroyed was not a witch but rather a familiar that got separated from its’ master. Thus destroying it yielded no profit. Sayaka comments that it seem they’ve been fighting a lot of duds lately. (presumably off-screen) Mami asserts they can’t simply let lone familiars be as they can eventualy become witches themselves. (Quite neatly this gives us an origin for witches to throw us off from the origin of witches)

Mami asks the girls if they’ve settled on what they want to wish for, prompting Madoka to as what it was she wished for. Mami stops cold prompting Madoka to withdraw her question. But Mami is ready to share her orgin story regardless. Kuybey appeared before her in the aftermath of the car accident that killed her parents.

She didn’t have time to think and made a contract to save herself. (I have to point out how creepy Kyubey if framed in the scene with his shadow falling across Mami’s face) Mami says that she doesn’t regret it as the alternative was dying, but Madoka and Sayaka have a choice and time to mull things over so they ought to think carefully.

Sayaka asks if the wish has to be for themselves. Madoka immediately cottons to this being about Kyousuke despite Sayaka’s denial. Kyubey says of course someone else can be the target of your wish. Mami say she doesn’t like the prospect asking if Sayaka want that persons wish to come true of if she wants that person to be indebted to her. Sayaka is chastened (for the moment).

Mami reiterates that this an important decision that they shouldn’t rush into though as far as Kyubey is concerned the sooner the better.

Back at her home Madoka is mulling over her options, stumped by what to wish for with Kyubey saying it’s against his rules to offer suggestions. Madoka floats the possibility of simply wishing to be a magical girl. Kyubey asks if what Madoka wants is power. Madoka initially waves the notion of but then reconsiders. In her view she’s weak and lacking in talent, the possibility of becoming someone like Mami would be enough for her happiness.

Kyubey reveals that in his estimate Madoka could be vastly stronger than Mami. While power varies depending on the wish Madoka has higher potential than anyone Kyubey has encountered before. Madoka demures and their conversation is interrupted by a knock on the door.

Junko has come off badly from Japans terrible workplace culture and it’s mandatory after-work binge drinking. So Madoka is called upon by her dad to help her too bed. This prompts Madoka to ask her dad why Junko loves her job when working at that particular company was never her dream.

Tomohisa says that it’s not so much the job itself that Junko loves, rather the chance to test her drive and find satisfaction in her accomplishments. It’s that drive that keeps her power through even when there are parts of her job she doesn’t like. Madoka is intrigued by the idea of a dream not being an single even but a way of living.

Meanwhile Mami meets Homura in a deserted plaza. Homura opens on an aggressive note by chastising Mami for putting civilians in danger. Mami counters that those “innocent civilians” have been chosen by Kyubey. Homra cuts to the chase Mami is leading Madoka and Sayaka towards being Magical Girls, and that she objects to Madoka specifically becoming one. Mami draws the wrong if understandable conclusion that Homura is threatened by Madoka’s potential. Mami makes it clear that the next time the two of them meet it will be as enemies.

The next day the hospital elevator opens on a disappointed Sayaka. She rejoins Madoka in the hospital waiting room. Kyousuke isn’t seeing visitors today it seems. On the way out of the hospital Madoka notices something, a Grief Seed. According to Kyubey it’s about to hatch. Unfortunately they don’t have Mami’s cell number so the decide to have Sayaka watch the Seed with Kyubey while Madoka goes to fetch Mami.

After Madoka leaves the Grief Seed pules one last time and the barrier goes up. The new labyrinth is a mix between a hospital and candyland but it’s denizens don’t seem to be hostile yet. Kyubey reminds Sayaka that were she to come up with a wish he could make her a Magical Girl right now. Sayaka defers for the time being.

Madoka returns to the scene with Mami in tow and opens the door into the labyrinth. They gets a status update from Kyubey and Sayaka immediately, the witch remains dormant for the time being. Kyubey suggest to keep the magic to a minimum and walk to the center of the maze without provoking it’s occupant.

After they enter it’s soon apparent that once again Homura was following, much to Mami’s displeasure. Homura say’s she will handle things this time. Mami says that Sayaka is in danger and that she is unwilling to trust Homura, then she cuts negotiations short by uses her ribbons to bind Homura. Homura protests that this Witch is particularly strong, but Mami doesn’t seem interested in hearing about it.

As the sneak through the labyrinth Madoka tells Mami that she has been thinking about her wish, what she desires more than anything else is to help people. To simply become a hero like Mami will be enough to satisfy her. Mami tells her once again that the life of a Magical girl is hard. She gets her often and has little time for love or friendship. Madoka says that she still wants to be like her, prompted Mami to finally lower her mask.

“Nobody should become someone like me. I’m just acting cool, but I have no one to talk too when I’m scared or sad... I’m force to cry alone. Being a magical girl really isn’t that great.”

Tragically Madoka tells Mami the one thing she wanted to hear. She’s not alone anymore, she will fight alongside her. Mami tearfully takes her hands, but then on a lighter note says Madoka should still find something to wish for, putting to her a faux ultimatum. If she can’t think of something else by the time Mami has defeated the witch she’ll wish for an extravagant cake to celebrate them becoming a magical girl team.

Then the witch begins to awaken and it’s showtime. Buoyed by the prospect of someone by her side Mami makes quick work of the familiars. The Witch herself well..

She doesn’t cut the most imposing of figures. Mami smacks it’s doll-like form around a bit before calling forth the largest Tiro Finale yet. It’s not very effective as some kind of giant clown worm erupts from the dolls mouth and then

The ribbons binding Homura dissolve. In the process seeming to turn to blood. Homura is horrified, she know what just happened. Mami is gone.

As Madoka and Sayaka look on in horror Charlotte devours the body. Kyubey seemingly frantic calls on them to make a contact to save themselves.

“That wont be necessary” says Homura. While a Charlotte makes a valiant effort to chomp another magical girl all she gets is a mouth full of bomb. The explosions rip the Witch apart leaving behind her Grief Seed and a broken teacup full of blood. Homura tells Madoka (and Sayaka) to burn this moment into their mind, this is that fate of Magical Girls.

As Houmra picks up the Grief Seed Sayaka tells her it belongs to Mami, futile as such a statement is. Homura says that such things are only for magical girls. Madoka is in her grief unable to speak. Then Magia makes its’ debut as the series true ending theme.

Needless to say this episode blew everyone away and spawned a ton of memes when if first came out. Indeed Mami’s death still dominates the discourse around her character and the series to a lesser extent even 10 years later.

But much like another prominent beheading victim it’s not like it was totally out of left field. While the marketing paints Mami as one protagonist out of a group of four in the show itself this isn’t really the case. Like papa Stark Mami takes the roles of a mentor to the other girls, and the mentor types have a tendency to bite it before their time.

And, here’s the first of a two part fic series I wrote. This one is from Riesz’s perspective, in a party where she’s in but not Hawkeye...notably my Girls’ Team run. The second will be Hawkeye’s perspective when he’s on the team but not Riesz. Featuring some cute blushing Riesz moments, along with Hawkeye being a smooth player and Angela being a teasing wingwoman!

“Thank you, Your Highness! Oh man, I could kiss you!”

Before Riesz knew what was happening, the Nevarlan thief cupped her right cheek in his hand, then placed a tiny peck on her left one! She could feel her entire face growing hotter in the moment as confusion for his actions set in. And that playful look on his face…it only made it worse!

“Wh-What have you done!?” she cried out. “What are you doing!?”

At that moment, Hawkeye’s satisfied smirk left his face, replaced with a genuine smile. “Ut-oh, I got carried away. Honestly, I’m sorry.”

While his words did little to cool the young woman’s burning face, she found herself able to get some semblance of her voice back. Riesz promised to do what she could to save Hawkeye’s friend, Jessica, though still sounding a bit more timid than usual. For his part, the thief decided to go and try to see what he could do on his own, heading through the doors in front of them.

Once he had left, Riesz stood there for several more seconds, hands over her cheeks in a futile attempt to cool herself down. Oh, how could he have gotten her so off kilter like that? He might have left Nevarl as he claimed, but that didn’t change that she’d just let a thief steal her first kiss! Which sounded quite funny in her mind, not that the thought made her calm down any…

“Riesz, are you okay?” asked Angela as she put a hand on the younger girl’s shoulder.

That helped to snap Riesz back to normal. “…What? I—Yes! I am fine! We should move on. We cannot delay!”

Angela stated, “Not the best way to impress a lady, but at least the guy was cute!”

Despite the feeling of embarrassment that wouldn’t fully leave, Riesz had to agree with her!

Hearing Niccolo’s story chilled the three girls to the bone. Belladonna knew how to summon monsters? It was bad enough that she could use magic to control a powerful clan of ninjas, skilled at stealth tactics. But that she practically had infinite soldiers if she could keep calling forth beasts to fight off her enemies…

“Have you evew heawd of this, Angewa?” Charlotte inquired.

The princess shook her head. “No, I haven’t. And I’ve scoured the castle library in the past to try and find some sort of magic I could do!”

Turning to their leader, the young cleric asked, “How about you, Wiesz?”

But she didn’t reply, her eyes glued at the entryway where Hawkeye and Niccolo had just left through. In that moment after opening the door, Hawkeye had turned back and given her a tiny wink, making Riesz’s body grow hot once more. Did he think this funny? What was he getting out of seeing her blush? And did he stay long enough to see her reaction this time…?

“Wiesz?” Charlotte asked again.

Angela shook her head and walked up to Riesz. “So…still thinking about that dashing rogue who managed to steal your heart?”

“H-He did not!” she exclaimed. “All he’s managed to do is make me upset! For a proud Amazon warrior to be kissed without her permission…”

“Eh, your face says a very different story,” was Angela’s reply.

Riesz quickly shook her head, insisting she didn’t! That it was just because she was not used to having a man pay her such attention! The men in Laurent wouldn’t have even dared try with someone not only their princess, but who could also eviscerate them in a single spear strike!

But why did this little voice in the back of her head tell her she was wrong…?

The three girls walked through the gates to Diin after their trip to Fiery Gorge. Sure, they had found Salamando, and were another Spirit closer to reaching the Sanctuary of Mana. But Belladonna had released the power of the Fire Stone. Time was running out, and if they didn’t awaken the Goddess of Mana, the Benevodons would be released!

Angela was all for heading onward, of getting out of the hot, dry, and very disgusting desert! But Riesz insisted that it was getting late and they should spend the night at the oasis. They would be much less effective in combat if they weren’t well rested, after all, something she knew well! The number of times Alma had given her a stern talking to for training way too hard when she was younger…

“Oh, is it that?” inquired the young magician. “Or…is it that you want to go check on that young man to make sure he got back here safely…?”

“Why would I need to check up on him!?” questioned Riesz.

Angela put an arm around her friend. “Well, because he was carrying an unconscious woman through such dangerous environments. Of course he might have had some problems going forward. It’s only natural that you worry about him…”

Riesz stated, “I’d think that, considering he was able to get into Citadel Laurent without any trickery or trouble, he is perfectly able to take care of himself!”

She quickened her steps and entered the Inn. They needed to book their rooms, first and foremost. Though Angela did note that Riesz was also looking around the room to see if anyone else was already using the beds.

‘She’s an easy book to read! But…maybe Riesz needs a bit of a push to get her going…’

A THUMP woke Angela up late that night. She rubbed her eyes, noticing Riesz’s bed was empty. The princess of Altena threw on her robe and quietly slid off the bed into her slippers. It was important to make sure their leader was okay, though she didn’t want to wake Charlotte in the process. The kid did need a lot more sleep than her older companions, after all!

The air was cool, a far cry from how hot and irritating the desert had been when they crossed it earlier that day! Not that Angela minded…although it didn’t get rid of the coarse annoying sand! Still, she could tolerate it for just a little bit if it meant helping her friend…

“Riesz? Where are you?” she called out.

Just then, a voice called back, “I’m over by the oasis!”

Angela looked in the direction the voice had come from, noticing her friend sitting at the end of a long dock. Riesz was holding her knees against her body, looking out over the water. The moonlight shone down upon the still waters, looking like an expertly painted picture. But it seemed the beauty of the setting did little to cheer Riesz up.

“Why…why can’t I stop worrying about him?” whispered Riesz as Angela sat beside her. “I mean, maybe she woke up as they were escaping, and they decided to go to Sirhtan instead. Yet I can’t sleep without having dreams of him being attacked by monsters…”

A devious smirk crossed Angela’s face. “Simple! It means you have a little crush on him!”

“Wh-What!? Why would you think that!?” Riesz cried out, her face growing redder.

Angela stated, “There’s that, for starters. Every time you think about him, or he comes up in conversation, or you two meet, you end up blushing and stuttering. He’s on your mind, even when you say otherwise. Besides…not like he isn’t eye candy.”

“Even if I had feelings for him, which I do not, he obviously loves that girl, Jessica,” Riesz reminded her. “I would never think to try and get in their way.”

There wasn’t much Angela could say to that. Love was…a complicated thing. Else her parents would be together, and Angela would have known who her father was! At least, that’s what she always told herself…considering her limited interaction with her mother while the retainers always seemed to avoid the subject when she tried to bring it up.

At that moment, the sound of a door opening reached their ears. Followed shortly after by footsteps on the wooden docks. They stopped a few moments later, as the shadow of a lean man fell over the pair of princesses.

“You ladies decided to stop here for the night?” a familiar voice questioned.

Both Riesz and Angela turned, noticing Hawkeye standing behind them. Angela took note of the relieved expression now covering Riesz’s face. She smirked, before standing up and beginning to walk back to the Inn.

“Riesz here was kind of worried about you,” she stated. “But we didn’t see you in the Inn and decided to take a rest instead of setting out while exhausted.”

Angela picked up her pace and was back inside before Riesz could even respond. That left the embarrassed princess sitting and staring at the handsome figure before her. She shook her head…trying to remind herself not to think in that way. It wasn’t like he was available, even if she was interested. Now that she knew he was okay, she should just go back to the Inn…

Hawkeye sat down where Angela had been and smiled at her. “You were worried? That’s fairly sweet of you to think of a rogue like me!”

“I…well…you were carrying an unconscious girl the whole way,” she brought up.

He told her, “I’m a master thief! Of course I know how to move without being seen. We’re holed up in the Item Store’s basement, that way I can easily run to get medicine if needed.”

That made sense, at least. And Riesz felt silly being so worried! Though she had to admit the smile he was giving her made her feel so calm and peaceful. Was…was her willingness to show concern that important to him? It was nothing new for her, being her job as Captain and Princess to worry about her subordinates and citizens.

They sat there for several moments as words failed her. Until finally, Hawkeye spoke up. “I wish I could go and give Belladonna what’s for! She murdered my best friend, someone I considered a brother, then turned my home into her own personal plaything! But with Jessica in this state, I can’t leave her alone. And there’s no going back to Nevarl until Belladonna is kicked out.”

“Do not worry,” responded Riesz. “My friends and I will make sure that witch pays for her crimes. There’s still my father to avenge, and the suffering of my people. I hope that will ease your mind.”

“Thanks, Princess,” said Hawkeye, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Riesz reached across and laid her own hand on his shoulder as well. The pair just sat there for a minute or two, staring into each other’s eyes. She had no idea how to read him, the emotions beyond that gaze. Nor could she understand why this felt so…right to her! Angela was wrong…she didn’t have feelings like that for him! All she was thinking about was how both of their suffering was caused by the same woman and whomever it was she served!

‘And yet, I wish I could just stay here, if only for a little longer…’

But despite that voice, Riesz got up, noting that Hawkeye followed her to his feet. “I really must get back to the Inn. We have to get going as soon as we are rested.”

“A tiny suggestion,” he told her. “The desert is colder at night, as you have seen. If you travel early in the morning, it won’t be as bad as going at the height of the afternoon.”

Riesz thanked him for his advice and headed back to the Inn. Maybe she didn’t quite understand what was going on in her head at the moment. However, finding the Elementals and reaching the Sanctuary came first. Once the Mana Sword was hers and peace had returned, then Riesz could work at figuring it out. Though, that meant she’d have to meet with Hawkeye again…a thought that sent the most pleasant shivers down her spine.

And when she returned to the Inn, Riesz found her dreams of worry replaced by ones of her and Hawkeye looking out over the vast Laurentian mountains, their arms intertwined.
