It’s time again y’all, time for a soon to come new Jönssonligan movie!

Here’s an English translation for all you curious Non-Swedish fans out there:

The new Jönssonligan will premiere in theaters next year!

One year to go, folks! Until we get to know the new Jönssonligan on the big screen. Sweden's most beloved criminal gang is making a comeback with a new comedy and new (albeit familiar) stars in the iconic roles.

In the newly released picture, we see for the first time how Robert Gustafsson will look like Charles-Ingvar "Sickan" Jönsson.

With him is Anders Jansson as Dynamite-Harry, Jonas Karlsson as Vanheden and Jennie Silfverhjelm as Doris. The league's plan? Stealing a T-Rex skeleton from the Museum of Natural History and selling it to businessman Wall Enberg for 320 million kronor!

- It has been fantastic fun to see the league come to life in the guise of these gifted actors, say the film's producers in a press release.

"Jönssonligan" premieres in cinemas in December 2024 and you can see the first teaser trailer in cinemas already this Christmas.

Att Dr. Busé inte fick mer screentime i de sista två original-Jönssonfilmerna borde betraktas som ett brott. Han var ju en perfekt ersättning för Sickan :(

I'm surprised that nobody has gotten the Swedes to commit vote fraud by pinging that one blog for their polls yet tbh (this isn't a dare!! I'd rather that we win by writing the most convincing propaganda rather than relying on sheer numbers this time.)

Anyway! Vote for Charles-Ingvar "Sickan" Jönsson. The man's life literally revolves around crime. He'll spend his years in prison coaxing info out of his cellmates so he can plan his next heist. And those heists? Brilliant. He's capable of building a small robot using legos just so it can press a button in a room he couldn't reach. He'll fall through a trap floor while scouting one of his marks' homes, nearly die from the fall, then think "we'll get back in at 6 tomorrow by filling the chasm beneath the floor with water from her swimming pool, to do so I should get Harry to blow up these rock walls" and actually manage to get back in that way. If he hears that his CEO nemesis is planning to get some MacGuffin through dubiously legal means? Sickan will just steal it before the CEO does and then sell it to him for a massive price - he can't report Sickan to the police without outing himself, can he?

This is mostly balanced out by Sickan being a mess socially. It's implied that he doesn't have his own home and has to live with his henchmen whenever he's out of prison. If his henchmen then go "sorry, we've left the life of crime while you were gone but you're still welcome here?" He just walks out really slowly. In general, if a social interaction deviates from what he was expecting he clearly doesn't know how to handle that at all... The list continues but I've used too much space in this ask already lol

The Jönssonligan film series turns 40 years old this week, so it only seems appropriate to share this commission now. For context, this is based on the scene toward of Dyker upp igen where the protagonists are celebrating their escape from the police via boat. Admittedly I wouldn’t consider this film my favourite from the series, but that scene never fails to make me smile and Setz did a great job depicting the mood!

English fansubs released for the first 5 Jönssonligan (The Jönsson Gang) films!

This series of comedic heist films is centered around the titular gang leader, Charles-Ingvar “Sickan” Jönsson, and his two partners in crime. He is originally joined by the optimistic con man/professional yes man Ragnar Vanheden and a strong yet rather nervous Fenno-Swedish guy called Rocky... For the first two films. Afterwards, Rocky would leave the cast to be replaced by Vanheden's cousin: an alcoholic demolitions expert called Dynamite-Harry.

These films are primarily defined by Sickan’s meticulously planned heists, with a recurring theme being common household items being used in unusual ways. Many of these heists also involve his nemesis, the corrupt CEO Wall-Enberg, in some way. But the heists themselves are accentuated by various other things: mild slapstick gags, tense scenes where Wall-Enberg's henchmen actively try to kill the gang, word play that made the translator cry, the occasional jab at contemporary politicians/events, and above all, the... Let’s say eccentric characters just being themselves:

The first 3 films are straight remakes of films from the Danish Olsen-banden series, but later entries would go on to feature more original material. Despite its derivative nature (and mixed reception from pro critics), Jönssonligan is still fondly remembered in Sweden, to the point that 2 separate documentaries were made to celebrate its 40th anniversary. I hope that at least some of the reasons why come across in translation.

There are more films in the series: I'll create a separate announcement post if I sub any of them. Each film is pretty much a stand-alone, with previous films getting a brief nod at most.

All of the films have been released on DVD as well as a few online services, including Google Play (although you might need to use a VPN to find them there). My subs are synced to the complete DVD box set, but can be used with other releases. Watch out for the desync though: the biggest difference I found between two releases was 1.255 seconds.
