“We started early in school.  Seven guys from my church got together and started practicing in a basement.  Michael Armstrong on drums.  Robert Burton on lead guitar.  James Cloud on bass.  Charles Easton on the piano.  Then we had our three singers: Wilbur Simmons, Dennis Austin Ray, and me.  At first we just sang on the sidewalk.  Or even just walking down the street.   But eventually we were getting real invitations to perform: parties, barbeques, little shows here and there.  Then we got bigger and bigger.  Until one night in 1969 we’re backing up Bobby Darin in front of 5,000 people at a college in New Jersey.  I was only fourteen at the time.  It was ecstasy.  The next ten years we toured up and down the east coast.  From Montreal to Pompano Beach, Florida.  We peaked in 1976.  That was the year we were booked forty weeks in advance.  There were signed contracts everywhere.  Even Frankie Valli wanted one of our songs.  But things fell apart.  Our rhythm guitarist died.  Some of the instrumentalists got married.  And Dennis went off on his own.  I was heartbroken.  Truly heartbroken. For ten years I’d done nothing but sing and party.  I hadn’t gone to school.  I hadn’t worked a job.  So I came to New York and did what I could to survive.  I’ve worked as a super.  A maintenance man.  A baker at Kripsy Kreme.  But for the last eight years I’ve been homeless.  Right now I’m sleeping in the hallway of a building where I collect the trash.  But I was in a great band once.  We were called ‘The Uniques.’  And I’ve told you everyone’s name but mine: Vaughnterrol Lockette, lead tenor.”

Unlocking the Secrets of our Floral Teacups
By Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
While “Save-the-Dishes” sounds like a fantastic social media hashtag, HDVI Administrative Director Kimberly Ward launched this campaign in 2002 to “create the proper atmosphere for interpretation of the period of occupation”. While the dishes were only the first wave of a larger Victorian Parlor drive (click here to read about our wall covering!), our bone china absolutely delights our visitors today as people recognize and recall their memories enjoying the Old Country Roses Style.
Debuting in 1962, it featured “gorgeous clusters of red, pink, and yellow roses, flamboyant edging and 22 carat gold embellishments”. Harold Holdcroft drew upon different inspirations from the 1921 King’s Ransom pattern to the beauty of a quintessential English country garden in the “haze of summertime.” While this iconic style excited people in the 1960s, the pottery had enticed customers from the late 1890s.Thomas C. Wild purchased Albert Works pottery in 1896 in Stoke-on-Trent named to pay homage to the birth of Prince Albert the previous year. After producing commemorative pieces for Queen Victoria’s 1897 Diamond Jubilee, Albert Crown China earned the Royal Warrant in 1904. By 1910, the Company had expanded to New Zealand and would eventually produce in Australia, Canada, and the U.S. with their innovative gas and electric fired kilns. In 1917, Thomas Wild’s sons joined the company changing the name to Thomas Wild & Sons and the Royal Albert Incorporated as a limited company in 1933. Pearson Group acquired the pottery in the 1960s adding it to the company’s other Allied English Potters. By 1970, the company officially disassociated itself with T.C. Wild & Sons renaming it to Royal Albert Ltd. The marks on the china also changed from simple printed or impressed crown marks with the initials “T.C.W.” to concentric circle to a crown interlocking.

While our pattern is English, the fashion and etiquette of elaborate tea services went beyond any one border and certainly predates the 1960s! Colonial Americans enjoyed imported beverages like tea and highly valued serving these drinks in fine silver and ceramic vessels. By the start of the 18th century, American silversmiths produced teapots – at first globular and then eventually drum and oval shaped. Sugar bowls, tea pots, hot water urns, and canisters for dried tea leaves all populated the tables of the wealthy in attempt to impress their visitors. Meanwhile, the British searched for an alternative to importing porcelain from China and Thomas Frye incorporated an interesting ingredient to his Bow Porcelain Factory productions in 1748 – bone. His factory was close to slaughterhouses and the introduction of bone ash produced sturdier teaware. This idea caught on and by 1780, Joseph Spode of Stoke-on-Trent, introduced “Stoke China” until his son renamed it to “bone china” after his death. Adding bone ash also creates a creamier and softer color and can be admired when held up into the light as it is more translucent than fine china, which contains no bone.
The “Save-the-Dishes” Campaign was an overwhelming success thanks to: The Prince William County Historical Commission, The Dr. Elisha Dick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Charles Reid, Wayne Neavear, Catherine Patterson, Edward and Mary Roman, Isabelle M. Lockett, Laura A. Barlow, Barbara Shutt, visitors, volunteers, and HDVI staff. As you walk into our Victorian Parlor, take time to admire the pieces but also think of the delightful recipes you could pair with it, such as Malinda Russell’s Raspberry Tea Cake, her cakes famous for being so light: “One cup white sugar, one pint sour cream, three tablespoons melted butter, three cups flour, one and a half teaspoon soda, two do. Cream tartar, grated nutmeg, mix into a batter; pour over sheet paper into dripping-pan; bake in a quick oven; when done, cut into squares, crush the berries, and sweeten to your taste. Cover the cake with berries…” For more recipes, look for Malinda Russell’s A Domestic Cook Book published in 1866, recognized as one of the oldest cookbooks written by an African-American woman.

[TASK 182: NAURU]
In celebration of January 31st being Nauruan Independence Day, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 140+ Nauruan faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever faceclaim or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!

Third Thursday October 21
The next Third Thursday — the monthly evening of art in Athens, Georgia — is scheduled for Thursday, October 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. This schedule and location and hours of operation information for each venue is available at 3thurs.org.
Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia
Yoga in the Galleries, 6 p.m. — Join us via Zoom for a free yoga class surrounded by works of art in the galleries. Led by instructors from Five Points Yoga, this program is free and open to both beginner and experienced yogis. This program is available both in-person and via Zoom. Email [email protected] to reserve an in-person spot or join us on Zoom.
On view:
“Collective Impressions: Modern Native American Printmakers” — Examines the individuals, communities and institutions central to elevating printmaking as a medium among Native American artists during the second half of the 20th century.
“Inside Look: Selected Acquisitions from the Georgia Museum of Art” — With more than 17,000 objects in its collection, the museum cannot show everything all the time. This exhibition features new gifts and purchases across our curatorial departments that have filled critical gaps in the permanent collections.
“Kota Ezawa: The Crime of Art” — This exhibition brings together new and recent works related to Ezawa’s “The Crime of Art” series, a group of light boxes and video animations that chronicle some of the most infamous and high-profile museum heists in history.
“Neo-Abstraction: Celebrating a Gift of Contemporary Art from John and Sara Shlesinger” — “Neo-Abstraction” highlights the resurgence of abstract art among contemporary artists, drawing from a recent major gift.
“In Dialogue: Artist, Mentor, Friend: Ronald Lockett and Thornton Dial Sr.” — This exhibition focuses on one work by each artist, both gifts from Ron Shelp, comparing their approach to their work and examining the shared relationship that sustained their creativity.
“Whitman, Alabama” — This ongoing documentary project by filmmaker Jennifer Crandall brings Walt Whitman’s words to life through the voices of modern-day Alabama residents.
“Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from the Horvitz Collection” — This exhibition presents Japanese pottery and porcelain created by three generations of master ceramic artists. Made with both ancient and modern materials and methods, their works are exceptionally diverse. They share the exceptional craftsmanship and sophisticated design characteristic of Japanese contemporary ceramics.
“Power and Piety in 17th-Century Spanish Art” — Works by premiere Spanish baroque painters such as Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Murillo, Pedro Orrente and others, on loan from Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery.
The museum’s days of operation are Tuesday – Sunday. Reserve a free ticket and see our policies at https://georgiamuseum.org/visit/.
ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art
ATHICA@675, Pulaski St., Suite 1200
“Remote Residue by Doppler Projects” — An exhibition consisting of objects, photographs, sounds and videos that are residual, remnant or peripheral within an artist’s studio practice. These observational snippets are installed alongside curatorial artifacts including contact lists and communication records, receipts and rejections. Participating artists from all over the world contributed materials through physical and digital mail that the Doppler Projects curatorial team of Derek Faust and Lauren Peterson then built out through structural systems and arrangement to form a cohesive multimedia installation.
ATHICA@CINÉ Gallery
“Remembering Chatham Murray and Her Art” — Works of the late, beloved Athenian and painter Chatham Murray, organized by her friends Charles Warnock, Juana Gnecco and Anne Sears and featuring 14 paintings that span six decades. A number of works in the exhibition illustrate Murray’s love of home and table. Favorite subject matter included the bounty of the garden and home interiors and exteriors, the latter inspired perhaps by her daily walks.
Lyndon House Arts Center
“Willow Oak Tree Exhibit with Guest Curator Abraham Tesser” — In honor of the willow oak tree that graced the lawn of the historic Ware–Lyndon House for over a century, this exhibition features works created with and inspired by the tree. Each of the participating artists received reclaimed wood from the tree to incorporate into a work of art.
“Inside Out: Expressing the Inner World” — Abstract paintings from a group of women artists working primarily in the Southeast.
“Window Works: AJ Aremu” — Using the banks of windows as a palette, AJ Aremu represents Black bodies in motion and states of repose. Their contemporary clothing blends with African patterns in Aremu’s exploration of the melding of cultures.
“Collections From our Community: Bill Raines Pond Boats” — Bill is a photographer and while traveling throughout Georgia he’s come to know all the junk shops along his routes. He’s picked up these antique toy vessels along the way.
Lamar Dodd School of Art Galleries, University of Georgia
“Pinky Promise” — Jacob Wan and Dodd MFA candidate Lila Villalobos create parallel narratives in their work that embody humanness and how love and experience shapes one’s understanding of the world.
“The Flat Earth Society: a Visitation” — Paintings by Atlanta-based conceptual artist Pam Longobardi
“8.19%: Black Artists Alliance” — This inaugural Black Artists Alliance-curated show engages a variety of themes including, but not limited to, material research, race, sexual identity, embodiment and generational trauma. The artists included are AJ Aremu, Jordan Campbell, Zahria Cook, Jeremy Diamond, Temple Douglass, Victoria Dugger and William Evans.
“Dawn Williams Boyd: Woe” — Dawn Williams Boyd’s “cloth paintings” sheer size adds to their larger-than-life, often brutal subject matter.
The Athenaeum
“Trevor Paglen: Vision After Seeing” — An exhibition of photographs and a video by internationally renowned artist Trevor Paglen explores an essential question at the heart of Paglen’s recent work: “Are vision and seeing the same thing?” Paglen investigates this question as it relates to the long history of technologies that have aided, and perhaps even eclipsed, the human eye.
tiny ATH gallery
“Towards the Crooked and the Dim” — Illustration by James Greer.
Safety precautions in place for tiny ATH gallery:
Face masks are required in the building
Please consider parking up Pulaski/Cleveland to alleviate parking issues
If you feel unwell, or have been in touch with anyone who has been sick, please stay home
Enter through front porch door
Hotel Indigo, Athens
ArtWall@Hotel Indigo: “All or Nothing” — Considering the intersection of natural and industrial beauty, “All or Nothing” juxtaposes organic abstractions and lush landscapes with historic structures and decimated buildings. Featured artists include Alexa Rivera, Christina Matacotta and Zahria Cook.
Glass Cube: “Aurora,” an installation by multimedia artist Zane Cochran featuring changing light and geometric lanterns based on occurrences of the Northern Lights. Open 24/7.
New to the permanent collection is an installation of nine works by Rebecca Kreisler now installed in the Gallery@Indigo. Kreisler joins a cadre of local well-known artists and a robust collection of works by artists such as Mark Steinmetz, Brittany Lauback, Alex Murawski and others on view in the hotel lobby spaces, on each floor and in the guest rooms.
The Classic Center
Classic Gallery I: “Hello, Welcome!” — During these uncertain times, the abstract worlds of Maggie Davis, Jonah Cordy, Carol MacAllister and Jason Matherly offer a bit of respite, a visual escape through a door, portal or window into a space of color and shape, a new place to explore.
Classic Gallery II: “Classic City” — The artists in this exhibition help us to see our city in a new light. James Burns renders familiar signage and buildings like a page out of a graphic novel. Sydney Shores’ digital works celebrate the Georgia Theatre in festive color palettes. Thompson Sewell photographs our buildings and business inspired by Wes Anderson films; his works are saccharine and symmetric. Allison Ward’s digital drawings of our public art bus stops are adorable and ignite the imagination.
COVID safety precautions in place for the Classic Center:
Proof of vaccination, negative test within 72 hours or a signed health affidavit are required to enter the building. Health affidavit can be completed in advance (https://formstack.com/forms/?4526279-7MNeElb0qm) or via the QR code on the front door.
A mask must be worn at all times.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co.’s CCBC Gallery
Artist-in-Residence Noraa James’s painting-in-progress on display in the CCBC Gallery through November 1. Plus: How do you contribute creativity to your community? Let us know on the interactive chalkboard installation!

Hurricane Zeta crashes into storm-weary Louisiana
Hurricane Zeta slammed into storm-weary Louisiana on Wednesday with New Orleans squarely in its path, threatening to push up to 9 feet of sea water inland and batter homes and businesses with fierce winds in a Gulf Coast region already pounded by multiple storms this year.
Some roads were flooded near the coast, where forecasters said Zeta was making landfall around Terrebone Bay near Cocodrie, an unincorporated fishing village at the end of a highway.
Rain pelted the French Quarter in New Orleans, and streams of water ran off roofs. Trees whipped back and forth in the wind, though a few people were still out on Bourbon Street with umbrellas or in slow-moving cars. The iconic streetcars were idled and City Hall closed, Mayor LaToya Cantrell said.
Zeta had top sustained winds of 177 km / h (110mph) as a Category-2 hurricane and was the 27th named storm of a historically busy Atlantic hurricane season - with over a month left before it ends.
Tropical storm warnings were issued as far away as the north Georgia mountains, highly unusual for the region. New Orleans has been in the warning areas of seven previous storms that veered east or west this season. Zeta was staying on course.
“I don't think we're going to be as lucky with this one,” city emergency director Collin Arnold said.
Zeta had been predicted to hit as a relatively weak Category-1 hurricane, but Louisiana residents awoke to updated forecasts predicting a Category-2 at landfall.
“The good news for us - and look, you take good news where you can find it - the storm's forward speed is 27 km / h (17 mph). That's projected to increase, and so it's going to get in and out of the area relatively quickly, and then we're going to be able to assess the damage more quickly, ”Governor John Bel Edwards said in an interview on the Weather Channel.

Officials urged people to take precautions and prepare to shelter in place, and a business-as-usual atmosphere in the morning in New Orleans diminished as the storm neared and grew stronger. Traffic slowed, and restaurants and coffee shops shut down.
“This year, the storms have been coming back-to-back. They've been avoiding New Orleans but finally decided to come, ”cookie shop worker Curt Brumfield said as he stowed empty boxes in trash cans outside and others boarded up the windows.
The winds were picking up and water was rising above the docks in Jean Lafitte, a small fishing town south of New Orleans that takes its name from a French pirate. Workers drove truckloads of sand to low-lying areas where thousands of sandbags were already stacked for previous storms.
“We're going to get a lot of water fast,” said the mayor, Tim Kerner Jr. “I'm optimistic regarding the tidal surge because of the speed of the storm, but we're not going to take it for granted. ”
Zeta could lash the northern Gulf Coast with wind, rain and storm surge more than 150 miles (241 kilometers) east of New Orleans. In Mississippi, the city of Pass Christian ordered all boats out of the harbor, and Dauphin Island, Alabama, shut off water and sewer service in that typically are swamped in areas storms.

New Orleans officials announced that a turbine that generates power to the city aging drainage pump system broke down on Sunday, with no quick repair in sight. There was enough power to keep the pumps operating if needed, but little excess power to tap if other turbines fail, officials said.
Officials said they were running through contingencies to provide power and make repairs where needed should there be other equipment problems. Forecasts called for anywhere from five to 15 centimetres (two to six inches) of rain to fall in the New Orleans area, but Zeta is expected to be a relatively fast-moving storm, possibly mitigating the flood threat.
By Wednesday afternoon, Zeta's top winds had risen to just shy of a major, Category 3 storm, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Zeta raked across Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday, toppling trees and briefly cutting power to more than 300,000 people but causing no deaths, before strengthening again along a path slightly east of Hurricane Laura, which was blamed for at least 27 Louisiana deaths after it struck in August, and Hurricane Delta, which exacerbated Laura's damage in the same area just weeks later.
Hurricane warnings stretched from Morgan City, Louisiana to the Alabama / Mississippi state line, including Lake Pontchartrain and metropolitan New Orleans. The deteriorating weather forced early voting sites to close for hours in the western Florida Panhandle, where Republicans dominate.
Tropical storm warnings covered a large swath of the South, from Louisiana and Mississippi into Alabama and Georgia, including all of the Atlanta area, where winds could gust up to 89 km / h (55 mph) early Thursday. Winds could be “especially severe” in the southern Appalachian Mountains, where flash flooding is possible, the hurricane center said.
Edwards asked President Donald Trump for a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. He and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey both declared emergencies, as did Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich in Biloxi, Mississippi. Trump declared an emergency for Louisiana on Tuesday evening.
An average season sees six hurricanes and 12 named storms. This extraordinarily busy season has focused attention on climate change, which scientists say is causing wetter, stronger and more destructive storms.

After Hanna, Isaias, Laura, Sally and Delta, Zeta will tie a record set in 1886 and repeated in 1985 for six hurricanes smacking the continental US, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach.
And as the 11th named storm to make landfall in the continental US, Zeta will set a new record, well beyond the nine storms that hit in 1916.
“I'm physically and mentally tired,” a distraught Yolanda Lockett of Lake Charles said outside her New Orleans hotel. She's one of about 3,600 evacuees from Laura and Delta still sheltering.

Film Series: The Crime of Art: “Stolen,” 7 p.m. — It was the most expensive art heist in American history. In March 1990, two thieves disguised as Boston police officers gained entrance to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and successfully plundered $500 million worth of art. Among the 13 priceless works stolen were Rembrandt’s “The Sea of Galilee” and Vermeer’s “The Concert,” one of only 35 of the master’s surviving works. Filmed 16 years after the heist, the film raises a new magnifying glass to this crime, following the renowned art detective Harold Smith as he pursues the mystery of the stolen works. With Smith as a guide, it journeys into the mysterious and surreal world of stolen art and examines the many possibilities as to where the art might be today. 2005, NR, 85 min. This film series is presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Kota Ezawa: The Crime of Art” and is sponsored by the UGA Parents Leadership Council.
On view:
“Inside Look: Selected Acquisitions from the Georgia Museum of Art” — With more than 21,000 objects in its collection, the museum cannot show everything all the time.
“Neo-Abstraction: Celebrating a Gift of Contemporary Art from John and Sara Shlesinger” — “Neo-Abstraction” highlights the resurgence of abstract art among contemporary artists, drawing from a recent major gift
“Modernism Foretold: The Nadler Collection of Late Antique Art from Egypt” — An extraordinary assembly of Coptic objects dating from the 3rd to the 8th century CE belonging to Emanuel and Anna Nadler.
The museum’s days of operation are Tuesday – Sunday. Reserve a free ticket and see our policies at https://georgiamuseum.org/visit/.
The Porcelain and Decorative Arts Museum at the Center for Art and Nature
The Porcelain and Decorative Arts Museum at the Center for Art and Nature at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia will be opening its doors for timed ticket access (https://botgarden.uga.edu/porcelain-and-decorative-arts-museum-timed-access-now-available/). The newest building at the garden holds the personal porcelain and decorative arts of Deen Day Sanders, a longtime supporter of the State Botanical Garden. The space is designed to draw environmental and conservation connections to the collections in the museum.
Eight different gallery spaces blend conservation, botanicals, art, beauty and curiosity. Adjacent to the building is the Discovery and Information Garden, where visitors can connect to the living botanical collection that is represented in many of the porcelain works in the museum. Please join staff and docents for a time in the Porcelain and Decorative Arts Museum to develop your own ideas on art and nature and become inspired to see the natural environment through the lens of the many artists on display.
ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art
ATHICA@675, Pulaski St., Suite 1200
“LIGHT: 2021 Juried Exhibition” — ATHICA’s annual juried exhibition features contemporary art in all media that explores or references light, which is found all around us, around our planet, and throughout art, nature, literature, science, society and language as a concept and a construct with many different connotations. Without light there is no color and art would not exist. Work was juried by guest juror Matt Porter, curator at the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia.
3THURS Artist Talk with Andy Cherewick & Jeffrey Whittle, 6 p.m. — Join the artists and Curator Beth Sale for a gallery walk-through and discussion about the works in the exhibition “I vs. Me.” Reserve your free ticket. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/artist-talk-jeffrey-whittle-and-andy-cherewick-tickets-168152154621
On View:
“Willow Oak Tree Exhibition with Guest Curator Abraham Tesser” — In honor of the willow oak tree that graced the lawn of the historic Ware–Lyndon House for over a century, this exhibition features works created with and inspired by the tree. Each of the participating artists received reclaimed wood from the tree to incorporate into a work of art.
“Inside Out: Expressing the Inner World” — Abstract paintings from a group of women artists working primarily in the Southeast.
“Modernist Sculptures from the Legacy of Loyd Florence” — Florence’s life was marked by a lifelong passion for aviation. He graduated in 1939 from the first civilian pilot training program, sponsored by the University of Georgia and served as president of Athens Aviation, which operated the Athens Airport in the early 1950s. Later in his life, he began making metal sculpture.
“Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You: Brian Hitselberger and Julie Wills” — For this exhibition, the artists worked independently in their respective studios while maintaining an active dialogue through correspondence and video conferencing.
“I vs Me: Andy Cherewick and Jeffrey Whittle” — Two beloved Athens artists’ paintings in one gallery.
“Arts Center Choice Award: A Lot More Than It Seems by David Froetschel” — With structures found at thrift stores and imagery taken from fiction, Froetschel balances between order and chaos, dreams and reality, imagining what could be and depicting “a lot more than it seems.”
“Window Works: AJ Aremu” — Using the banks of windows as a palette, AJ Aremu represents Black bodies in motion and states of repose. Their contemporary clothing blends with African patterns in Aremu’s exploration of the melding of cultures.
“Collections from our Community: Oscar’s Godzillas” — “I always admired the idea of something unbelievable and wonderful hidden out in the world. Godzilla holds a great example. It shows how small we really are as a species and how our actions have great effects.” – Oscar Justus
Lamar Dodd School of Art Galleries, University of Georgia
“Dawn Williams Boyd: Woe” — A series of textile works by the Atlanta-based artist that reflect a lifelong critique of social injustices and racial violence. Using scraps of fabric, needles, and thread as her tools, Boyd painstakingly “paints” the entire surface of her quilts, layer upon layer, cutting, sewing, endlessly repurposing, building the surface into a formidable, authoritative source that pulls no punches. The exhibition is organized by Daniel Fuller and will travel to the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York, and the Galleries at Sarah Lawrence College.
“Time at the Tableæ — Features the work of Dodd undergraduate students Alan Barrett, Alex Barrett and Massie Herlihy. In this intersection of performance, installation, ceramics and photographs, the artists hope to bring a better understanding of what it means to pursue and use ceramics in the ritual of our daily lives.
“Flex·i·ble Architecture: we’re not trying to be heavy, we’re trying to be light” — Dodd MFA candidate Rachel Seburn and Alberta, Canada–based artist Sarah Seburn created this exhibition that investigates materials and their malleability. The artists pull from architectural lineages as they create an installation that acts as a mock-up showroom, an investigation into a new kind of interior building that allows for floors and walls to sink, rock and tilt.
“Waste Creation” — Mickey Boyd, a Dodd MFA candidate, presents a collaborative exhibition with Max Yarbrough, an artist working and living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The artists present a series of images and sculptures that explore how exponential growth equals exponential waste.
The Atheaneum
“Trevor Paglen: Vision After Seeing” — An exhibition of photographs and a video by internationally renowned artist Trevor Paglen explores an essential question at the heart of Paglen’s recent work: “Are vision and seeing the same thing?” Paglen investigates this question as it relates to the long history of technologies that have aided, and perhaps even eclipsed, the human eye.
tiny ATH gallery
“Davy Gibbs: ‘Empires’” — “Empire” is a word we associate with a powerful sense of place, with both glory and decay, rise and fall. The Deep South, if never quite an empire in the formal sense, has always been a land of little empires. Athenian Davy Gibbs examines this idea through photographs.
Safety precautions in place for tiny ATH gallery:
Unless vaccinated, please wear your mask
Please consider parking up Pulaski/Cleveland to alleviate parking issues
If you feel unwell, or have been in touch with anyone who has been sick, please stay home
Enter through front porch door
Hotel Indigo, Athens
ArtWall@Hotel Indigo: Considering the intersection of natural and industrial beauty, “All or Nothing” juxtaposes organic abstractions and lush landscapes with historic structures and decimated buildings. Featured artists include Alexa Rivera, Christina Matacotta and Zahria Cook.
BARBAR
“Uncaged” — Work in oil and watercolor by Helen Kuykendall, a largely self-taught artist originally from Venezuela who combines natural motifs in unsettling ways. Opening party from 7 to 9 p.m. as part of Third Thursday.
The Classic Center
No programming for this month’s Third Thursday.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co.’s CCBC Gallery
Artist-in-Residence Noraa James’s painting-in-progress on display in the CCBC Gallery. Plus: How do you contribute creativity to your community? Let us know on the interactive chalkboard installation!
Third Thursday was established in 2012 to encourage attendance at Athens’ established art venues through coordination and co-promotion by the organizing entities.
