The Atypical Family: Review
Since no one is going on my blog I'll try to post my review here don't let it flop.
Synopsis: Most of the Bok family have superpowers. But due to various lifestyle choices they can no longer use them. Bok Gwi Ju (Jang Ki Yong) can go back in time to his happiest moments but can no longer do so as he has depression. Bok Man Heum can see the future in her dreams but now has trouble sleeping. Bok Dong Hee can fly but due to her struggles with obesity she can no longer do so. Bok In Ah has a smartphone addiction problem. Enter Do Da Hee (Chun Woo Hee) who is mysterious and seems to be the answer to the Bok family problems.
Review: This drama is quirky and mostly character-driven. It can be a bit slow for some people and it has a certain vibe. It’s well-directed. It isn’t exactly lighthearted. It’s about how the characters deal with not being able to use their superpowers and it takes some time for the actual reasons they can’t use them to be revealed. All the actors acted well. I had some issues with the ending but overall the show is quite good.
I am a sucker for kdramas that involve characters with depression. I like how they showed that depression isn’t something you always get over easily and that it can return but you just need support to be able to deal with it. Gwi Ju also had to deal with two traumatic events which is the reason for his depression. One of the issues with the drama is that the actress for Dong Hee wears a fat suit and the depiction and treatment of her obesity isn’t always great.
Otherwise the drama depicts most stuff well and is worth watching for that. The characters are flawed and they do change but some get a kind of redemption arc that isn’t always earned. And I am kind of confused and unsatisfied with the ending. Overall though, the drama is a solid watch.
My Rating: 8/10

random thoughts about castaway diva, episode twelve
(read more because i always get carried away lol and this post might contain spoilers)
SO SAD THAT THIS IS THE LAST EPISODE :(((
Ki ho opening the bottle for mok ha... my heart is already full and we're not even two minutes into the show 💓
Even in his last act, mr jung is selfish and wants to drag his family with him. He wants them to keep his name because he still thinks of himself as their one and only father. I thought the questioning with the judge would have put him back in his place but no, that man is too lost in his head to think clearly. Mr jung is jealous of lee uk because mr lee has proven to the whole family what it means to be a loving husband and father. Meanwhile, mr jung has only made them suffer and live a fearful life.
I'm so happy lee uk survived the attack. What a beautiful moment to have him wake up when his wife is next to him and she reminds him her lifelong wish to become his wife. That's the power of love 💓
I'm so happy the brothers got their jobs back. Also their smiles when looking at their last names 💓
I know this is supposed to be a feel good moment (when the parents got their license to reopen the hair salon) but I can't help side-eyeing all their neighbors that gave them such a hard time when police came for the identity theft situation. Makes you reflect if you want such friends/neighbors around you.
I found it funny when mok ha and mo rae realized president lee is the one to blame for the song changes.
Seeing yong wan being part of mok ha's team was such a sweet moment. Saying he wants his next 10 years to be fun.
The moment where ran joo, the brothers and yong wan give out balloons and ask the audience to cheer for mok ha 💙 My heart is full of love
Fly away is such a great song. And seeing mok ha finally getting the recognition she deserves ad topping the charts <3 I'm so proud.
Some day, it was a delight to hear it as the closing song. Everything has come full circle.
I'm giving this a 9/10
#there's a pang in my heart#no more castaway diva episodes to look forward to :(#but it was a nice surprise#i didn't expect a lot from this drama and i was wrong#castaway diva is such a great drama#random(al) thoughts#kdrama#castaway diva

At time of posting 14 Sep 6pm KST: 47K views, 271 comments (Will only translate comments relating to YoonA)
2. Look at YoonA’s latest projects line-up, everything is going well for her ㅋㅋㅋ 7. All are doing really wellㅋㅋ 8. I thought YoonA wasn’t good at acting when she was Saebyuk (in her first lead drama ‘You Are My Destiny’) but these days her acting is really good. Not just as an acting idol, but she's just good at it (acting). I thought IU was good since the drama ‘Pretty Man’ that starred Jang Geunsuk, and for Suzy, Anna, is the best... 9. I watched YoonA well in ‘King The Land’ ㅋㅋ She was a perfect fit ㅋㅋ 11. What? These are all the people I like!!!!! Everyone is pretty and their acting is great. By the way, Yoona's recent works are crazy, they're all successful 12. YoonA was so cute in ‘King The Land’ and her acting is so good ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 13. I watched all three of YoonA's latest projects. They were all good. So good. She is soaring especially in ‘King The Land’. 15. YoonA is also good at acting and is building up her filmography well. 16. Wow, just look at YoonA’s recent works ㅋㅋ 17. YoonA is really good at comical acting
19. YoonA, you acted so well, so natural ㅋㅋㅋ I'm looking forward to your next work. 20. I’m convinced (I agree) ㅋㅋㅋㅋEveryone's acting is good, and YoonA's batting score (percentage of her success rate) is especially good lately. 22. Wow, it looks like there aren't any (i)dols to remove (meaning OP agrees with all on the list). But it is surprising that Jung Eunji and Sooyoung aren't here.. I guess it's because there are a lot of female idols who are good at acting. 26. YoonA acted so well in ‘King the Land’ㅋㅋㅋ 27. Wow, 1st place for both men and women are ‘King The Land’ male and female leads ㅋㅋㅋ 28. It's freaking that both YoonA’s dramas and movies did well. The line-up of her recent works is insane ㅋㅋㅋ 30. YoonA’s latest works line-up are insaneㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 31. Yoona’s career is insaneㅋㅋ 32. It’s the same with male idol rankings, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places are the ones that always come up when acting idols are mentioned ㅇㅇ 33. YoonA's works line-up is insane 34. I really enjoyed watching Yoong’s ‘King The Land’, it’s my life drama ㅠ 35. Only the people who should have been chosen were chosen. 36. Nodding (in approval) ㅋㅋ 39. Oh, there are all these people who I thought they were good 40. They all act well... 41. Agreed 42. They are all good at acting and pretty 44. Her latest work ‘King The Land’, ‘Big Mouth’, ‘Confidential Assignment’ shivering (because of the awesome line-up) 45. YoonA's acting was really good in ‘King The Land’. She was just like Cheon Sarang herself👍 47. It feels like the differences in acting skills among the actresses aren't that big. The 5 people seem to be famous enough to be in the top 5 in terms of influence and reputation. 48. Do well, everyone 49. YoonA is really good 50. I acknowledged 51. They are all well-known faces. 52. I saw YoonA for the first time through ‘King The Land’ and she was really good. 57. YoonA was really good in ‘King The Land’. 63. I clicked in the article shouting ‘YoonA’ 65. Lim Yoona's latest work is insane...;; 68. These are all people I like 69. The votes are more evenly distributed here, so the difference in votes is not that big... The male idols were overwhelming. 71. I came in thinking YoonA would be here, but she ended up in first place ㅋㅋㅋ. 72. (Comment deleted at time of translation) 74. YoonA's acting in ‘The K2’, IU’s in ‘My Mister’, and Suzy's in ‘Anna’ were really, really good. I'm curious about the acting of this three people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. 76. But this was released yesterday morning and suddenly both articles (male and female) came out as ‘hot’ topics. 79. To be honest, I was sad because I thought YoonA's (drama) filmography was bad, but these days, everything is really good.. And the movie filmography is good too. 80. I acknowledge everyone in this article, but it's a shame that Jung Eunji, Han Sunhwa and Sooyoung weren’t included. I really enjoyed Sooyoung's ‘Not Others’. 85. YoonA seems to choose her works well. 88. (Comment deleted at time of translation)
90. Lim Yoona’s form is crazy!!!!!!! 92. (replied to 69th comment) Oh, it looks like they got votes from all over. Female acting idols are also good at acting. 94. Oh, they are all good actors ㅋㅋㅋI also liked Jung Eunji, Sooyoung and Sojin ㅋㅋ 100. YoonA, IU and Suzy's singing and acting careers are all top notch 101. I acknowledged all of them 105. I thought about Bona, but the acting idols in the article are all very good 106. I also thought about YoonA's ‘EXIT’, but it is not her most recent work. 107. I enjoyed everything YoonA has released recently. 108. I came in the article thinking of YoonA. 109. YoonA❤️ I like her very much 112. King-jeong (t/l note: It is a slang to of 킹 (king)+ 인정 (agreed), to describe being full agreement of something) 113. I approved 115. YoonA’s recent career seems really good 117. Approved approved. 119. YoonA and IU, king-jeong. I want to watch Suzy’s drama, why isn’t it coming out yet? 120. We selected the acting idols who showed the greatest success this year and who we are looking forward to in the future. ----------------------- This is the survey topic. 121. I think YoonA’s career is so good 122. I heard about ‘King The Land’ being a huge hit on Netflix and ‘Big Mouth’ also did well, hence it is a back-to-back hit. 125. I acknowledged it 127. (replied to 120th comment) It is in the text ㅋㅋ 128. As expected, YoonA! 129. Ah, YoonA’s acting is good. 130. I acknowledge all of them 131. Approved 132. Ah, I approved of everyone listed here 133. YoonA is good 134. YoonA seems to be in good form these days. Personally, I think Suzy’s ‘Anna’ was the best ever, so I hope Suzy do another such genreㅠㅠ 135. Good 136. Approved 137. I acknowledged everyone listed here, there are people who I am disappointed that they are not on the list, but there is also no one in the list that I objected too. 138. YoonA’s filmography is good. All her works are very good, and she acts very well too. 140. Everyone's form is good, but the acting skills of the female idols are ambiguous. 141. I like YoonA so much 143. (Replied to 140th comment) What?;; As expected, all the malicious commenters are like sh*t. All the 5 females here have a besting acting of their life for at least once, so what are you talking about? 144. Yes 147. IU and Nana are good. No, all the 5 people listed here are goodㅋㅋㅋ 148. For the female acting idols, the votes are considered more evenly distributed. 149. (Replied to 140th comment) ? 152. I’m looking forward to YoonA’s movies and dramas doing well. I’m also curious about the ‘2 O’clock Date’! 153. I agreed with all listed in the article, Nana’s acting is really good. 156. I like Lim YoonA to the point of dying ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ 157. King-jeong 158. YoonA is good. I thought her acting was good after watching her works recently 160. YoonA is so likeable these days. I've seen all of her recent works. Now, she is a ‘trust and treasure’ actress.
161. Wow, all of them are K-pop talent. 163.The 1st place for both male and female are Junho and YoonA, ‘King The Land’ couple is really good ㅠㅠ I hope they both do better. The chemistry was good, and their acting was good in ‘King The Land’ 167. King-jeong to all on the list
168. Wow, 1st place is YoonA, congrats congrats!! 169. The movies and dramas YoonA starred in, all received great success, so amazing 171. I clicked in the article shouting YoonA ㅋㅋㅋㅋI hope things go smoothly~ 175. YoonA deserves the 1st place. Her drama and movie careers are all good. 176. Regardless of her career, Yoona really showed off her acting chops with her ‘Confidential Assignment’ and ‘EXIT’, and she did well in King the Land as well. Nana and Kim Sejeong are rather unexpected, and I think Han Sunhwa or Jung Eunji are better. 178. All of them have improved a lot in their acting so it’s even better 180. I feel like all the idols mentioned in the original text and Sooyoung and Eunji are good at acting. 185. YoonA 189. YoonA has a good way of choosing projects ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 191. These are the actors who were active 'this year', but it seems like it includes only those who can be included... YoonA did well in ‘King The Land, and IU and Suzy are the queens of immense popularity who respond right away in surveys like this even if they didn't have any hit films or activities this year. (Just like stars who are ranked even if they are inactive that year when Gallup selects the best OO of the year...) Nana becomes popular because of ‘Mask Girl’ recently. 193. YoonA! 194. Even though Nana is really good, I recognize all 5 people there. 196. (Comment deleted at time of translation) 197. YoonA was such a perfect fit for ‘King The Land’ this time, so pretty 198. I'm waiting for YoonA's next work 200. YoonA! 201. Acknowledged acknowledged 204. I agreed with all the line-up here 205. Waiting for YoonA's next work 208. Line-up approved... 209. No, initially I thought how could Sejeong be in 5th place only, but as I scrolled lower (to reveal the top 4), the more I understood. 212. I only saw YoonA's works for a few seconds in passing, so I had the prejudice that I couldn't get into the character because I heard YoonA's voice that I used to hear.. I recently watched Exit belatedly and was so surprised that it turns out okay. I finally understand why her movies are so successful and how she gets casted so consistently. 214. YoonA is good! Han Sunhwa too!! 215. YoonA is really good 216. Even though I’m not a fan of all five of them, I acknowledged. 217. Oh.. everyone who are good are gathered here 218. Soshi is YoonA, but I was also surprised that Sooyoung was better at acting than I thoughtㅋㅋ 219. ‘King The Land’ influence is huge. Both sides (male and female) came in first place 220. YoonA is really good ㅋㅋㅋㅋ I watched ‘Big Mouth’ and ‘King The Land’ recently, and she did well in both dramas. YoonA would be a perfect match for a little bit of ‘Big Mouth’ – ‘King the Land’ – ‘EXIT’, a bright, cheerful, confident and u undaunted not in a villain way character 221. The experts voted but there are people here trying to start a fight so ridiculousㅋ What is it? 224. They are all good 225. YoonA’s latest line-up projects are really awesome ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
226, Everyone are gathered here, they are all good 227. Oh, YoonA approved 229. Really, YoonA is really good. I think she has star quality, good screen control, and acting skills. 231. If its YoonA, its king-jeong. 232. YoonA is building up her filmography for movies and dramas well. Her acting in ‘Confidential Assignment’, ‘Big Mouth’, ‘King the Land’ were really good. I admit her acting in ‘Miracle’ was also really good. 233. (Replied to 232nd comment) All same as you and ‘EXIT’ too!! 235. Oh my, YoonA's acting was really good. 236. YoonA, approved 238. Agreed 239. YoonA, approved approved 240. YoonA, approved 241. YoonA, I really enjoyed ‘King The Land’. So lovely ㅠ 243. Hehehe YoonA>< 244. All are good 245. Acknowledged 246. YoonA, approved 248. YoonA, approved 249. Oh, they are all good. And popular too. 258. Even if there are people who should be added in, but there aren’t people that should be removed. I went ‘King-jeong King-jeong’ while scrolling down the list. 259. I watched every project of YoonA that comes out after ‘EXIT’. Really, she is good at acting in both movies and dramas. 260. Agreed 261. It's a shame that YoonA keeps getting underestimated because of the disgusting keyboard warriors. 263. I clicked in thinking of YoonA. 264. Didn’t YoonA filmed a drama in the early days of her debut, she did really well in that too. 265. Agreed, YoonA and Suzy are good at acting 266. YoonA and Suzy are both good at acting 267. Agreed 268. YoonA did really well 269. Agreed for all 270. When will YoonA's next work come out ㅠㅠ I want to see it soon 271. YoonA has become someone that can be trust and treasure (to watch). I am waiting for her next work.

Rating: R
One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.
4. Train to Busan (2016)

Actor: Ahn So-hee, An So-hee, Baek Seung-hwan, Cha Chung-hwa, Chang-hwan Kim, Choi Gwi-hwa, Choi Woo-shik, Choi Woo-sung, Dong-seok Ma, Eui-sung Kim, Gong Yoo, Han Ji-eun, Han Sung-soo, Jang Hyuk-jin, Jeong Seok-yong, Jung Seok-yong, Jung Young-ki, Jung Yu-mi, Kim Chang-hwan, Kim Eui-sung, Kim Jae-rok, Kim Joo-heon, Kim Ju-hun, Kim Keum-soon, Kim Soo-ahn, Kim Soo-an, Kim Su-an, Kim Won-Jin, Lee Joo-sil, Lee Joong-ok, Ma Dong-seok, Park Myung-shin, Sang-ho Yeon, Seok-yong Jeong, Shim Eun-kyung, Sohee, Soo-an Kim, Soo-jung Ye, Terri Doty, Woo Do-im, Woo-sik Choi, Ye Soo-jung, Yeon Sang-ho, Yoo Gong, Yu-mi Jeong, Yu-mi Jung

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.
The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.
It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.
3. Serenity (2005)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller
Actor: Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Carrie ‘CeCe’ Cline, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Colin Patrick Lynch, David Krumholtz, Demetra Raven, Dennis Keiffer, Elaine Mani Lee, Erik Weiner, Gina Torres, Glenn Howerton, Hunter Ansley Wryn, Jessica Huang, Jewel Staite, Linda Wang, Logan O’Brien, Marcus Young, Mark Winn, Marley McClean, Matt McColm, Michael Hitchcock, Morena Baccarin, Nathan Fillion, Nectar Rose, Neil Patrick Harris, Peter James Smith, Rafael Feldman, Rick Williamson, Ron Glass, Ryan Tasz, Sarah Paulson, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Tamara Taylor, Terrell Tilford, Terrence Hardy Jr., Tristan Jarred, Weston Nathanson, Yan Feldman

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The first feature-length film from Joss Whedon (The Avengers), Serenity is a lively and enjoyable adventure, replete with large-scale action sequences, strong characterizations and just the right touch of wry humor. An enjoyable viewing experience that stands alone without demanding that you have familiarity with the original program beforehand.
2. Sorry to Bother You (2018)

Director: Boots Riley
In the year of the Netflix TV Show Maniac, another absurdist title stole critics’ hearts. Sorry to Bother You is a movie set in an alternate reality, where capitalism and greed are accentuated. Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) is a guy called Cassius who struggles to pay his bills. However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.

This show is framed as a big corporate drama, but it's really about the relationships between three amazing women. I liked pretty much all of it. I particularly liked how the history between these women is given more weight than the romances.
My only complaint is that there aren't enough shows like this out there.
The lens the show uses for these characters is very matter-of-fact. If this were a Hollywood production, I'd have expected some kind of girl-boss power fantasy. The show just puts the women in charge, flaws and all, and trusts the writing and acting to carry the audience through. It does all of this remarkably well.
I had trouble with the first episode, as it kind of throws a curveball and puts you into the corporate / political deep end, but once the show gets going in episode two, it doesn't stop.
The Performances
Im Soo-jung as Bae Ta-mi (Tammy). Soo-jung does a great job as (pretty much) the main character and the center of the drama. I didn't always care about the corporate nonsense being thrown around by the script, but I never felt bored watching Bae Ta-mi. You get to see the whole range from charming and feisty, to exhausted, sad, needy/anxious, and even happy. Really fun to watch.
Lee Da-hee as Cha Hyeon (Scarlet). This was one of the standout performances. Cha Hyeon was the most active of the characters and all of the best moments came from watching her interactions with the other characters. Lee Da-hee was having fun with this role, and that showed through the entire performance.
Jeon Hye-jin as Song Ga-kyeong. The most subdued of the three leads. The writers chose to make this character a bit of an enigma. Jeon Hye-jin had a tough job as she had to have good chemistry with the other leads, while having the least amount of good character interaction, and she had to still seem believable. It took almost the entire series for me to really understand the character, but Jeon Hye-jin had enough charisma to keep me interested throughout.
Ye Soo-jung as Jang Hee-eun. The big villain of the series and one of the more interesting performances. Ye Soo-jung did a great job playing a harmless old lady (when it helped her get what she wanted) while switching on a dime to a menacing abusive terror. Her motives were relatively simple, but the character never felt like a cardboard cutout. Really interesting to watch and an amazing change from her role in Do You Like Brahms.
Everyone else! This was a true ensemble show and all of the characters brought something fun to the show, even that annoying two-timing ex (Pyo Joon-soo). Standouts: Kwon Hae-hyo as CEO "Brian", Jang Ki-yong as Park Morgan, Lee Jae-wook as Seol Ji-hwan (especially funny in the fake drama), and Oh Ah-yeon as "Ellie".
TL; DR:
Smartly written with very good performances from the leads. It's refreshing to see a show that has women in charge without pandering or falling into harmful stereotypes. The portrayal of the relationships between these three women blew me away.

Lee Sun-gyun, "I handcuff myself" voluntarily appeared
After Kim Hong-pa murdered Lee Ki-yeong, Lee Seon-gyun put the blame on Lee Sun-gyun, and Lee Sun-gyun was put in a position to become a wanted criminal.
In the 6th episode of the SBS drama 'Beopjeon', which aired on the 20th, Eun-yong (Lee Seon-gyun) and Park Joon-kyung (Moon Chae-won), who succeeded in putting President Myung In-joo (Kim Hong-pa) in prison in the last episode, fell into a ruse while executing revenge step by step. figure was drawn.
After Chairman Myung In-joo went to prison, Eun-yong made contact with CEO Oh (played by Oh Chang-hyun and Lee Ki-young), the biggest tycoon in the Myung line. He seduced CEO Oh by saying, "I'll give you the badge of a member of the National Assembly." Representative Oh was seduced by Eun-yong, who said, "Congressman Baek has no hope for the next election anyway, and he probably knows best." He decided to accept Eun-yong's offer and stood by his side.
However, Chairman Myeong did not remain silent. Representative Oh was taken aback when he received a text message of a picture of him with his adulteress in the middle of the night, and met Chairman Joo, the master, on the roof in a state of anger. Chairman Myung In-joo got angry at CEO Oh, saying, "I'm going to go crazy saying that the old men are supporting me, but are you going to wash your mouth like that? What is my appearance like this?" I'm going to give it to you, so let's be patient for a little while" and soothed Chairman Myeong.
Chairman Myung said, "I only believe in you." Chairman Myung poked the money envelope containing the forged will into CEO Oh's pocket, who grumbled, "Erase some useless photos." Then he shouted, "I'll keep my mouth shut about the prosecutor, forever" and pushed CEO Oh from the rooftop to the floor.
Oh's death was disguised as suicide. The next day, the news pointed to Eun-yong as the culprit behind CEO Oh's death, and Eun-yong's company was seized and searched.
Then Eun-yong voluntarily headed for the prosecutor's office building with firm determination. His nephew, Prosecutor Jang Tae-choon (Kang Yoo-seok), shouted, "Are you crazy?", but Eun-yong said, "You handcuff me, so that you won't get hurt," and reached out both hands toward the nephew, and the drama began. It's finished.

Karakterlerin her biri Tim Burton'a el sallayarak sahneye çıkıyorlardı.

Parasite & Globalization
Cassandra Villela
English 495
Professor Wexler
12 December 2022
Globalization: Korean Films in Westernized Society
Korean cinema has experienced growth in Hollywood’s growing global control. Hollywood films have influenced Korean films. Movies such as Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” can be seen as hybridized movies with Korean and Westernized aesthetics and issues. Mass media and modern technology play a crucial role in enhancing Globalization as it helps increase foreign films. Globalization is the term used to describe the relationship between the world’s economies, cultures, and populations; It is the process of change and interdependence between countries brought on by trade and communication. In the film Parasite, by Bong Joon-Ho, the Kim family uses the ideologies of Western Education and modern technology to scheme their way into employment by the wealthy Park family.
Parasite shows the contrasts in the social gap: being underprivileged or exceedingly rich. Although the film takes place in Korea, poverty is understood globally. The film emphasizes the lives and struggles of people in the nation but incorporates elements of horror and drama, which might be why America has opened its arms to the film. According to Jin Dal Yong, Hollywood makes films for entertainment, including action, horror, and comedy themes (81). Korean movies have also incorporated Hollywood’s film formulas. The divide between classes and dreams of climbing a social and financial ladder is prevalent in American culture. Parasite presents these identical issues but also adds elements of shock value. The Kim family first gains an opportunity to work for the Park family through their son Kevin because of his best friend Min’s advocacy in becoming an English tutor for the family’s teenage daughter. Ki-Jung, also known as Jessica, also becomes employed by the family because she pretends to have studied art in Chicago, Illinois. Cultural Globalization is showcased when Cho Yeo-Jeong buys headdresses and a tipi tent from America because of her son’s current obsession with Native Americans.
Another way the film introduces Globalization is through technology. Within the first few minutes of the film, we are placed into the semi-basement of the Kim clan while they are scavenging for a WIFI signal. The mother deems it necessary to have a working connection to communicate with a pizza place through WhatsApp for their job. Modern technology has created quick movements for money, materials, and other economic assets. Jessica tells her family she got the Park mother to believe her credentials because she Googled art, and the term “art therapy” came up, so she used that. Kevin and Jessica also used Photoshop to create fake documentation of collegiate studies. The internet has increased the sharing and flow of information and allows people to exchange culture and knowledge.
The movie satirically exemplifies how in Korean society, it is idealistic to study or purchase outside goods in the US to obtain a better societal position and reputation in Korea. English is seen as a powerful tool and good credentials for aspirational status. I enjoyed the film because I connected the Kim’s financial position to those who live on Downtown Los Angeles—Skid Row streets. Parasite displays the constant hunt for a job, or money, to stay afloat; its insightful division of class shows how Capitalism works on a global spectrum— the work of the lower class feeds profit to the upper class, and their earnings feed the low-class consumers.
