Daffodils from Real Life hate Autism Speaks!

Fun fact: Daffodils are the national flower of Wales.

Bonus fun fact: It’s weird for Mod Rowlf to call them daffodils because in Welsh they’re known as Cennin Pedr.

In 1980, newlyweds Cai and Delyth Gruffyd found themselves stuck in Crimson Creek, Colorado – the fortunate (in hindsight) victims of a late spring freak blizzard that lasted almost two weeks. After spending more of their trip to the States in the quaint town then they had planned, they admitted they had fallen in love and had, after a night of too much wine, to make their home there. Why not? It was the perfect place to set down roots and make their dreams come true. In 1984, they opened up Cennin Pedr a'r Ddraig, translated to Daffodil and Dragon, the couple’s nicknames for each other. The shop was the best of both of them – a bookstore that featured not only the books they both loved, but the arts crafted by Cai and food made by Delyth’s own hands.

In 1988, they were blessed by the birth of their twins, Llywelya & Llywelyn, born not even a minute apart. They were followed in 1992 by Madog and Avalon in 1994. In 1998, the Rhys-Gruffydd’s learned that the child Delyth carried would be born with Down’s Syndrome. Undeterred, the growing brood welcomed Ianto, which means ‘Gift of God’, for that is what he was – a precious gift sent to remind the family that love and laughter was most precious. Two years later, they welcomed their last daughter, Nerys, who came into the world almost two months early. Thinking they were done, they received the last surprise in the winter of 2001, when their final child, Owain was born.

Each child, while part of a large brood, grew into adulthood and thrived in their mountain home, which, oddly enough, reminded them of the family homestead in Wales. And each contribute to C in their own way. Llewelya is a world renowned painter, who excels in landscapes of both of her homelands. Llewelyn casts the most beautiful pottery and delights in selling it at the family shop. Madog works in wood and people seek his furniture and art from all over. Avalon, takes after Delyth, and makes her place in the kitchen, putting to use the skills she learned at Le Cordon Bleu. Nerys’ art is candles and soaps. But her passion is her voice. And while she studies at the local community college, she hones her craft and stays busy waiting tables at the shop’s café. Ianto spends his time working in the bookshop. He also takes pleasure in the local theater company and can be found volunteering at the local school, library, hospital and nursing home, where he reads all the stories he loves He also makes hand crafted stationary.  Owain, the youngest, has found his passion in fashion. Despite his young age, his mother, sisters and female friends all clamor for his designs and wear them proudly.

Cennin pedr a’r Ddraig is a unique take on an artisan market. Taking up a three story building, each floor is littered with a plethora of books of every genre as well as wares crafted by each member of the Rhys-Gruffydd  family.

The roots of a Welsh emblem These sunshine yellow daffodils appear to have caught the eye of a passing blue tit - and no wonder. Bursting with colour on the banks of rivers and streams, these early bloomers have long been admired as a herald of spring. They are also one of the national emblems of Wales, although it is not entirely clear why.

Perhaps it is because they come into flower around March 1, just as Wales celebrates St David’s Day. Or maybe it is because of some linguistic confusion with that other Welsh national emblem - the leek, (leeks are cennin in Welsh while daffodils are cennin Pedr). Leeks have a very long association with Wales. Legend has it that St David himself ordered Welsh soldiers to wear them into battle against the Saxons back in the 6th century and the green and white colours of the leek were worn by Welsh archers in the 1300s. But by the 19th century, daffodils had grown in popularity as a Welsh symbol - possibly because they offered a more fragrant and eye-catching alternative to the leek. Whatever the reason, both are still worn in Welsh buttonholes on St David’s Day, so if you are celebrating today, Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
