dydd gwyl dewi hapus!
in honour of dydd gwyl dewi/st david's day, i wish to share this banger with you all that i used to sing all the time every year! it's called "Mis Mawrth Unwaith Eto" which means "March the first again"
the lyrics are under the cut! (both welsh and english translation with annotations!)
Cymraeg:
"Mis Mawrth unwaith eto*, a'r gwanwyn wedi dod;
Dydd Gwyl Dewi ydw hi.
Mis Mawrth unwaith eto, a'r gwanwyn wedi dod;
Dydd Gwyl Dewi ydw hi.
Dewi Sant, Dewi Sant, cofiwn Dewi,
Cofiwn am y pethau bach a'r pethau mawr**.
Dewi Sant, Dewi Sant, ffrind y bobl, ffrind y plant,
Rhaid i ninnau fod fel Dewi'n dda bob awr***."
English translation: (by me, pls correct me if i'm wrong!)
"March the first is here again*, and spring has come;
It's St. David's Day.
March the first is here again, and spring has come;
It's St. David's Day.
Saint David, Saint David, we remember David,
We remember the little things and the great things**.
Saint David, Saint David, friend of the people, friend of the children,
We should all be good like David all the time***."
*Dydd Gwyl Dewi/St. David's Day is celebrated on March 1st every year!
**This is in reference to Dewi Sant's most famous quote: "Gwenwch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd."/"Do the little things in life."
***Literally 'bob awr' means 'every hour'.

Okay, I thought it was about time I updated this with a) metric measurements, and b) a bit of an explanation re. a couple of things that people have asked me, so:
Ingredients:
1lb / 455g plain (all-purpose) flour
8oz/ 225g butter or marge
4 ½ teaspoon baking powder
Pinch salt
6 oz / 170g sugar
6 oz / 170g mixed currants and sultanas
½ teaspoon mixed spice
2 eggs
A little milk
I have stopped bothering to keep self-raising flour in the house, as it's basically just plain-with-added-floofmix (2tsp baking powder per 200g of flour), so the above is what I now use.
Re. the spices: "mixed spice" is sold as exactly that in UK supermarkets. It is a (ground) blend of warm spices – Schwartz (the brand I grew up with) uses cinnamon, coriander seed, caraway, nutmeg, ginger, cloves. Other blends I've looked at have added pimento and dill seeds to the mix, but I don't think they'd work for this particular recipe.
Personally, I can't be bothered to buy a whole separate mix that will probably go stale and get thrown out, so I make my own – generally cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg. YMMV on the rest – personally, I hate cloves, I love caraway but don't tend to stock it, and I hadn't thought to add coriander seed but might this time. I also sometimes add allspice (which is a berry, not a mix, despite the name!).
You can substitute with pumpkin spice mix if you have that, it's similar enough - although slightly more cinnamon-forward, I think.
I've not translated this to cups yet, because…I'm lazy. XD I will do that next year, I swear.
Okay, I will stop wittering on like a recipe blog, and go make some of these for myself!
Cooking Welsh Cakes, ahead of St David’s Day tomorrow. Great Aunt Babs’s recipe begins with 1lb flour, and ends with “Serves 4”. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
In case anyone wants the recipe:
INGREDIENTS 1lb self raising flour 8oz butter or marge ½ teaspoon baking powder Pinch salt 6 oz sugar 6 oz mixed currants and sultanas ½ teaspoon mixed spice 2 eggs A little milk
METHOD
Mix flour, baking powder & salt, rub in fat. Add sugar, spice and fruit.
Mix in beaten eggs. Add just enough milk to make it like short pastry.
Roll out on floured board to ½ inch thick. Cut into rounds. Cook 3-4 mins each side on hot greased griddle.
Serves 4 (or however many people want to eat approx. 30 Welsh Cakes).

My daffodils aren’t quite far enough along to celebrate St David’s Day but I hope everyone has a good one! Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! The winter aconite and crocuses were also growing under all that snow. Who knew?
