I have derealization/depersonalization and got my learner's permit awhile ago. My severe dissociation makes me constantly zone out, forget where things are, what road I am in, and this really worries me. How can I possibly become an independent driver if my problems prevent me from staying focused and remembering. I am absolutely terrified I will die or kill someone in a car accident because I get seriously lost and zone out, making me not realize my surroundings. What can I do? -CelestialLight

There are certain mentalillnesses which can really get in your way of driving, andderealization/depersonalization is one of them. If you are diagnosed with amental disorder that severely affects how you drive, you are required to reportit to your licensing agency. I know that you may want to drive, but you can beputting yourself and others in danger for driving whiledepersonalizaed/derealized. Those with dissociation disorders are normally notallowed to drive, because the nature of the disorder, you don’t always knowwhen you will dissociate. However, laws range from country/state/province, socheck with your local licensing agency for more information.

I know you may want todrive, and I really get that! I have my learner’s permit too, and I can’t waitto drive. But, my anxiety makes it really difficult to the point where Isometimes start hyperventilating and having an anxiety attack over driving. I stillwant to drive, and I’m allowed too, but whenever I feel as if I can’t drive, Idon’t. If I start having a panic/anxiety attack while driving, I will pull overto the side of the road or find somewhere to park because I am a danger tomyself and others in that situation. If you do decide to drive, keep in mindthat if you ever find yourself getting depersonalized/derealized, you canalways pull over to the side of the road and ground yourself using groundingtechniques and resume driving when you feel grounded enough.

If you get toodepersonalized/derealized to drive and/or your episodes happen too often todrive, then maybe you shouldn’t drive. I know that can be hard to hear, butlike you said, you want to make sure you are safe for yourself and others whenyou are driving. Your mental illness does not define you, but there are timeswhen it gets in your way, and it is completely okay to acknowledge that. I commendyou for realizing that there’s a problem and asking us about it, because that’sreally difficult to do.

No one said that youHAVE to drive. One of my best friends has a dissociative disorder and she’s notallowed to drive, and she’s 23 and gets around fine. Granted, she does live ina major city, so it’s very easy to get public transportation, but there areoptions if you can’t drive. There’s no problem with family members or friendsdriving you around. Buses and taxis exist for a reason. You can even use trainsor planes for long distances, and you can always walk for a short distance ifyou feel comfortable doing so.
