Talk Drunky to Me
Hey guys! So, I suck and the muse has been hiding for almost 4 months. I'm sorry I haven't been writing, but now that the show is over and KLAROLINE IS ENDGAME, my muse is KICKING! Okay, I'm hella rusty and Klaus is probably totes OOC here, but why not come back to life with a little crack drabble?
From Ashleigh: One gets drunk and confesses all over the phone, unaware that said person on the other end was actually outside, ready to confess their love. Fluffy post canon Klaroline?*no babies* ;)
Enjoy!
Coming to New Orleans in the middle of Mardi Gras was a good idea in theory, but in hindsight, Caroline cursed her less than stellar timing. The streets were brimming full with half naked people running around, tossing beads and spraying booze over the crowds while she attempted to navigate her way through the French Quarter. She dragged two heavy, gray suitcases behind her, and sidestepped a hazy college guy who embarrassingly face-planted in front of her as he attempted to flirt. Caroline wrinkled her nose and kept on walking, thankful that her taste in men had improved immensely over the decades.
Thirty years ago, Caroline would have been in the middle of the throng of people, drunk off her ass. But older, wiser, eternally a teenager but creeping into middle-age-Caroline was more interested in spectating the festival with a glass of champagne between her fingers and an Original Hybrid by her side.
She rarely spoke to anybody from Mystic Falls. Elena and the Salvatore brothers took the cure years before, turning human and living out their last lives in the suffocating small town. Matt married a quiet girl from high school Caroline’s math class that she never noticed and was about to become a grandfather for the fifth time. Bonnie traveled with Enzo, the witch using powers and herbs to keep herself from aging. She and Caroline kept in touch, meeting up whenever they were on the same continent.
It wasn't the first time she thought this, but perhaps she seriously considered for the tenth time, turning back and having the airline ship her belongings to Klaus’ door.  She blew her sweaty bangs off her forehead as she lugged her suitcases with a huff. Why did she feel the need to bring her whole shoe collection, including her ski boots? But, the dramatic person in Caroline (and to be honest, the dramatic person in Klaus too) eagerly anticipated the sure to be memorable look on his face when she showed up on his doorstep with her stuff.
She stopped by an alley, pulling out her phone to consult the address Rebekah texted her the week prior. Over the past few years, she and the blonde Original had somewhat hit it off through an accidental run-in in Barcelona. Caroline ran into a little drunken trouble with a hunter one night, and Rebekah was luckily in the same place at the same time, swooping in the save her. Surprisingly, the older vampire was a blast to travel and shop with. They had a long standing tradition of hitting all the infamous fashion weeks, and Rebekah not so subtly kept Caroline updated on her family’s hijinks.
Putting the address into Google maps, Caroline made a face when she realized how far out the Mikaelson mansion was from the French Quarter. Leave it to Klaus to find the oldest, largest mansion in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of town. She was just about to open up her Uber app for a ride when her phone vibrated in her hand, the words “Blocked Caller” flashing across her screen.
Rolling her eyes, she swiped to answer. It was a common occurrence for Enzo to lose his phone along with Bonnie’s whenever they went on a drinking binge in Vienna or Venice and they always called her from their newest number to let her know it was them.
“What country are you calling from this time?” she answered with a laugh.
There was silence on the other end, a shuffling noise coming through. Caroline narrowed her brows.
“Enzo? Bon?”
She heard another shuffle and a manly sounding groan came through the receiver. Her pulse jumped, her mind instantly going a hundred miles a minute wondering if Enzo got himself into some trouble.
“Enzo? Is that you?”
“Caroline,” a low, familiar accent sang through the receiver.
Her heart stopped, cheeks instantly flushing at the recognizable tone. Of course he would pick tonight of all nights to call her.
“Klaus?”
“Dearest Caroline,” he murmured, slurring a bit.
And he was as drunk as a skunk.
Caroline bit back a laugh at the cheesy moniker, finding herself wholly amused at his inebriated state. Over the decades, she and Klaus stayed in contact mostly through the phone and letters (she relentlessly made fun of his old-fashioned courting ways, but loved it all the same), so it was rare for him to be anything other than his usual arrogant, confident, murderous self. However, the last time she encountered a drunk Klaus, it was about a month after the incident in the woods and neither of them ever talked about it without blushing.
The first rule of phone sex, is to not talk about phone sex.
“Dearest Klaus,” she threw back at him, grinning stupidly at the brick wall in front of her.
“Love, have I told you how melodic your voice is?” he slurred.
Caroline snorted. “Not lately.”
“It’s like a drop of water in the middle of the desert. I ache and thirst for it,” he continued dramatically. “A taste of it is never enough.”
Caroline covered her mouth as she giggled, trying to muffle her amusement from the hybrid. Clearly he hadn’t toned down on the dramatics over the past couple of years. She heard him stumble through the phone, snarling at whoever was trying to help him.
She rushed to speak, keeping him from shedding any blood on the poor soul that ran into him. Clearing her throat, her fingers fiddled with the lock on one of her suitcases. “Been celebrating Mardi Gras?”
“Commiserating,” he all but groaned through the receiver. “Love, it’s been ages since I’ve seen you.”
“About 37 years, but who’s counting? ” she answered, her cheeks burning. “How drunk are you?
“Drunk enough to know how foolish I’m acting,” he responded dutifully. “But if I can hear your voice for one night, it’s worth it.”
Caroline rolled her eyes so hard that she could feel them ache. “A little dramatic are we?”
“Shakespeare was bloody annoying, but his writing had strokes of genius,” Klaus responded with a drunken huff.
Caroline’s eyes widened and a smile crept across her face as she realized the cause of his dramatics. “Been reading today?”
“Kol was visiting today and we had a little spat-”
“I’m sure.”
“And I say one little dagger threat and Elijah banishes me to the library for the rest of the day in exchange of him sending my dear brother off to Dubai. Bloody coward, I wasn’t going to actually dagger him. So, I spent the day catching up on a little light reading.”
“How light?”
“The whole Shakespearean catalogue,” Klaus admitted wryly.
Caroline bit her lip, trying to hold in a smile. “And?”
“I might have taken them down to the wine cellar and polished off a couple dozen bottles. I was only trying to bring a little culture into New Orleans, love.”
“You’re ridiculous,” she teased.
“Ridiculously over my heels  for you,” he shot back and Caroline groaned at the cheesy line.
“Oh God, that was terrible,” she countered with a laugh and she could hear him chuckle drunkenly on the line.
“I’m a bit wankered,” he sighed deeply.
“I would say you’re totally ‘wankered’,” she laughed. “Where are you?”
“On a street,” he replied promptly. “Watching the human race make ridiculous drunken spectacles out of themselves.”
She resisted the urge to point out that he was currently doing the same thing on the phone, but it wouldn’t have phased him.
“What street?”
“I’m not sure. Somewhere in the quarter,” he hummed drunkenly under his breath, the crowd noise in the background growing louder.
Caroline pulse increased and she tightened her grip on the phone and took a step outside the alley as she glanced around. He probably was only a few blocks away.
As ready as she was for figuring out what she and Klaus could be, the idea of seeing him again brought back both excitement and panic. She hadn’t seen him in decades, and teenage Caroline’s insecure fears were still there in the back of her mind. What if she wasn’t what he wanted? What if he realizes that “however long it takes” wasn’t worth it in the end?
“Do you ever feel like you’re alone?” he murmured, breaking her thoughts. “Like, you’re in a sea of people but you still feel utterly alone?”
She sucked in a low breath, unable to deny drunk Klaus’ uncanny way to hit the nail on the head of one of the many reasons why she was ready to try with him. Traveling by herself was amazing and it was nice to be able to not have to keep with someone else’s itinerary. But she had to admit that it was lonely at times. There would be a beautiful sunset in Venice over the water and she’d long for someone to share the beauty with, or dance the salsa with someone she knew in Havana. It was wonderful, but could be so incredibly lonely at the same time.
But with Klaus, she never felt like that. All of the other guys she’d dated, she’d be sitting by them at dinner or at dances and knew that their full attention was never on her. Tyler’s was always on revenge, Stefan’s on Damon and Elena’s, Matt always saw her as the back-up Elena. She always was alone.
Until she met Klaus and somehow, without even trying, she became his first choice.
“All the time,” she admitted.
Except with you.
There was a pause and she heard him take an unsteady breath. “Caro-”
She blinked quickly, trying to brush off the heavy moment. As if her body could feel him before she saw him, goose bumps suddenly rose on her arms and the hair on her neck prickled.
He was nearby.
She loosened her grip on her suitcases and put her phone down on top of it. Caroline swallowed, stepping around the corner and almost ran right smack into him. His hands shot out to grab her arms and steady her, his phone dropping to the ground with a clack.
“Hi,” she said quietly.
His eyes were wide, jaw slackened at the sight of her. If she wasn’t so nervous, she probably would have laughed at the comical shock on his face.
She was right, the dramatic person in her reveled at the sight.
“Caroline.”
“Klaus,” she gave him a small smile.
“W-what are you doing here?” he stammered, blinking rapidly as if he was trying to figure out if she was actually real.
Pressing her lips together, she steeled herself and met his unwavering blue-green gaze.
“However long it takes right?” she answered, her heart thumping frantically against her chest.
Klaus stared at her, his gaze unflinching as her fingers fidgeted nervously. The silence between them was profound, the noise of the crowds fading away as she got lost in his face. Her fingers itched to touch him, to curl into the soft gray henley shirt he was wearing. His curls were messy, no doubt a symptom of his all day drinking binge. But his eyes were clear as day, the drunk glassy look disappearing at the sobering moment.
Moments passed and her heart began to sank at his lack of response.
“Right. Maybe this was-”
Klaus cut her off, yanking her into his arms, immediately burying his face into her neck as he hugged her tightly. She exhaled sharply, the scent of him overwhelming as her arms wrapped around his waist and his fingers threaded through her curls.
“I-” she tried to say and Klaus cut her off with a shake of his head.
“Not yet,” he murmured in her hair.
She just closed her eyes and held on tighter. He pressed his lips to the soft skin between her neck and shoulder, inhaling deeply. Caroline fought off a shiver, feeling the scrape of his stubble against her neck as he moved his mouth up to her ear and kissed a spot behind her earlobe. He lifted his lips from her skin, moving back to where he could look at her. His hand brushed through the curls on the side of her head before cupping her cheek.
“Are you sure?” he asked, his eyes scanning her face.
He was entirely sober, his hybrid nature and the confrontation doing its job to bring him back down to earth.
Caroline pressed her lips together, meeting his searching gaze. It was such a simple question, but it was overloaded with so much meaning. Was she ready for him? Was she ready for him to be her last? Was she sure?
Once she leapt, she could never fully take a step back.
Caroline lifted her hand, gently pulling his off her face. Instantly his face fell and he took a step back. She reached over into the alley and pulled out her ridiculously heavy suitcases, stumbling a bit when they banged against her shins.
“What do you think?” she asked, arching a brow at him.
His answering smile took her breath away. He strode towards her, cupping her cheeks and pressed his forehead against hers.
“Say it.”
She rolled her eyes playfully. “Klaus.”
“I’ve waited decades for you to say it, love,” he needled her, ghosting a kiss on the corner of her lips.
She involuntarily moaned at the taste of him, the bite of the wine he had earlier mixed in with something that was totally and uniquely Klaus.
Something she wanted to taste forever.
“I’m ready.”
And then he kissed her.

Editor's Note: Celebrating & Anticipating
Editor's Note: Celebrating & Anticipating
From celebrating inspiring women across the superyacht sector, to the stand out vessels at the Miami Boat Show, not to forget the weird and the wonderful in superyacht design, Superyachts.com have had quite a week of show-stopping exclusives and exciting new launches to share...
Wrapping up our final feature on Women in Yachting - a series about influential and inspiring women across the superyacht sector - we turn our gaze to the illustrious careers of Angela Pernsteiner of Dominator Yachts and Marcela de Kern Royer of Icon Yachts to discuss women in build.
On the topic of the woman who steers Dominator Yachts success, it is only fitting that the latest addition to the successful Dominator Ilumen series, M/Y Hanaa, was launched in Dubai this week. Marking an expansion into a brand new market, this Middle Eastern development forecasts an incredibly exciting year ahead for the shipyard.
Elsewhere on the editorial horizon, we were figuratively on Cloud 9 in this week's Interior Insight. The onboard ambience curated by Winch Design, offers pure relaxation, consisting of beautiful furnishings, sumptuous fabrics and timeless styling. CRN's vessel's space leans on a contemporary beach theme, eschewing the ceremony of some yachts and instead opting for clean colours and subdued textures, all wrapped up in 74-metres.
In other news, Amels 55-metre M/Y Lili has stolen the spotlight, as she embarks on a round the world charter tour... we couldn't wait to hear more. We speak to CA Julia Buklina, from Imperial Yachts, who reveals how this ambitious superyacht is redefining charter standards, and what vessels like Lili mean for a shifting industry. The answers were truly insightful.
In shipyard news, we heard from Arcadia Yachts, who begin 2019 with ten new units under construction, proving the start of a fruitful year for the yard. We look forward to watching how these develop.
Elsehwere, Part 2 of Superyacht.com's The World's Most Beautiful Yachts, also continued. By our standards, it was the 'bold and unapologetic cool' of M/Y Silver Fast by Silver Yachts that appealed to our newsroom. Followed by the ultra-chic jet black hull of Okto, with a low-to-the-ocean stance the reminds us of a racing car. Not to forget M/Y A, that abides to the theme of unconventional, and a testament to Phillippe Starck's design, a man of the opinion that making boats that are just like every other is a pointless exercise; we agree.
At Superyachts.com, we enjoy critiquing the weird and the wonderful in superyacht design, so much so, we made this our feature focus this week. From 50-metre Adastra, noteworthy for her bizarre but beautiful appearance, (did we mention she is able to be controlled through the touch of an iPad?), to REV, the 182-metre giant that serves up submarines and laboratories, the ultimate research vessel designed by the visionary Espen Oeino.
As the Miami Yacht Show fast approaches, this week, Superyachts.com offers a selection of stand-out spectacles to watch out for during the show. From Lurssen's must-see Kismet, boasting her 'Champagne & Caviar' themed space, to Kinta, available for sale and charter with IYC, the show certainly does not disappoint.
Keep up to date with our latest news on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds.

Zenith embarks on the debut edition of LVMH Watch Week with a new kind of innovation in its DEFY collection with DEFY Midnight, a uniquely conceived line of women’s watches with a dreamy, cosmic touch. In addition, the new Elite collection redefines the codes of 21st-century watchmaking for the ultimate in contemporary elegance.
“I’m very grateful that Zenith is in Dubai for the first edition of LVMH Watch Week – DUBAI 2020, which I believe is the new international destination for the world of watchmaking. Glamorous and forward-thinking at the same time, Dubai is the perfect place to present an innovative collection of feminine watches. We are placing women’s watches at the forefront of the brand’s creative endeavors. But we weren’t content with making yet another ladies’ watch. With our newest models, it is the first time that Zenith has conceived women’s watches from the ground up”, revealed Zenith CEO Julien Tornare.
EXPLORING TWO SIDES OF FEMININITY
With its new creations dedicated entirely to women, Zenith is elevating both ends of the spectrum of women’s watches. On one side, the resolutely contemporary DEFY Midnight and on the other, the timelessly elegant Elite collection.
There is dreamer in each of us, gazing at the starry night sky and taking in the infinite potential that lies ahead. For its first purely feminine watch, Zenith sought inspiration from the cosmos when creating the DEFY Midnight, a versatile sporty-chic timepiece with a uniquely celestial dial, conceived with free-spirited women in mind. As much a jewel as it is a watch, the DEFY Midnight is the perfect companion for the independent women of today: confident, expressive and with a style of their own. Living by their own rules and assertive in their choices, DEFY Midnight women are never afraid to stand out and project their dreams.
Housed in a 36mm stainless steel case embellished with brilliant-cut diamonds, the dial of the DEFY Midnight gives Zenith’s “time to reach your star” philosophy a literal, visual manifestation. Available in deep blue or grey colors, the dial features a glossy finish with a vertical gradient effect for an unprecedented depth. Portraying the night sky above the endless horizon, where the dark vastness of space gives way to the glimmer of starlight, the dial at once enchants and enlightens the wearer. Evoking the Zenith starry sky, the brand’s faceted star emblem is the highest, brightest point in the depicted night sky. Completing the celestial landscape are stars of different sizes – some of which glow in the dark. A third dial made of white mother-pearl with a vertical gradient effect evokes moonlight on a cloudy night. White diamonds are applied on every hour marker, except at 3 o’clock where the date window is placed. Equipped with the automatic Elite in-house movement, the DEFY Midnight provides dependable precision and autonomy of 50 hours. A star-shaped oscillating weight brings a galactic element to the case-back view.
The DEFY Midnight features an assortment of bracelets and straps that can easily be swapped by the wearer, allowing the DEFY Midnight to adapt itself to different looks and situations. The integrated stainless steel bracelet as well as a selection of colored satin and leather straps with rubber backing can be swapped by means of a quick strap-change mechanism integrated directly onto the back of the straps, and requiring no tools or special skills for the owner to do on her own, be it for a change of seasons or just a change of outfit. Each DEFY Midnight will come in a special box that includes 3 additional colored straps and an interchangeable folding clasp.
Zenith revisits its own past from the vantage point of today, with the newly revamped Elite collection of unisex watches. Sleeker, more minimalistic, yet strong in its graphic identity and confident in its timeless lines and proportions, the Elite collection doesn’t repeat the past, but rather rejuvenates the codes of mid-20th century watchmaking. Through two models available in two sizes and a number of case and dial combinations, the Elite Classic and Moonphase models set the tone for Zenith’s vision of contemporary elegance. The line caters to the desires of those who value the aesthetics and enduring appeal of watches from bygone eras, with just enough modern accents to ensure it never feels antiquated.
Like rays of light darting out from the sun, the radiant sunburst pattern of the Elite Classic dial creates a spectacle of highlights and shadows. To enhance the visual depth, the dial is set with tapered hour markers that are faceted and polished. The minutes and seconds track lend the dial a scientific touch, while slightly larger applied hour markers break up the track and highlight the four cardinal points of the dial. Floating above the lively dial are sharp and slim “Dauphine” shaped hands, a nostalgic nod to Zenith timepieces from mid-20th century.
The Elite Moonphase, majestic in its tones and whimsical in its harmonious asymmetry, uncovers the veil of night to bring out the enchanting beauty of the moon. A midnight blue circle on the lower half of the sunburst pattern dial takes on the same tone as the moonphase disk, giving the impression of an oversized display of the golden moon and stars. In juxtaposition, a small running seconds hand at 9 o’clock recalls the fleeting nature of time.
Carefully reapplying the same elegant proportions across the collection, the Elite Classic and Elite Moonphase models are available in 40.5mm and 36mm case diameters, in stainless steel or rose gold. Besides the choice of dial colors, the wearer can give his or her Elite a more personal touch with a wide choice of straps in numerous materials and colors, available from Zenith boutiques and authorized retailers.
DEFY 21 LAND ROVER EDITION Reference: 97.9000.9004/01.R787
NEW CREATIONS FOR LVMH WATCH WEEK – DUBAI 2020
When two partners who are pioneers in their respective fields come together the results can be unexpected and exciting. Coinciding with the release of the next-generation Land Rover Defender, a total redesign of the emblematic, all-terrain vehicle with its most significant evolution to date, Zenith and the famed British carmaker are reinforcing their partnership with their most original collaborative watch to date: the DEFY 21 Land Rover Edition. This edition is a rugged and stealthy reinterpretation of the 21st century El Primero high-frequency chronograph, embodying the resilient spirit of the new Land Rover Defender that combines the ultimate in ruggedness and comfort. A limited edition of 250 pieces, it represents a complete makeover of the 1/100th of a second chronograph with a raw and minimalistic look. Crafted in microblasted titanium, the case absorbs light from all angles to better accentuate its faceted surfaces. Paired with a matching closed grey dial, the redesigned display features for the first time in a DEFY 21 a linear power reserve window, with the slightest touches of color for legibility. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Creative Officer, said: “For the next chapter in our partnership with Zenith we wanted a timepiece that captured the essence of the new Land Rover Defender: modern, durable and highly desirable. With subtle details that capture the character of the new Defender, this for me is the best timepiece we have created with Zenith”.
DEFY 21 CARL COX EDITION Reference: 10.9001.9004/99.R941
With respect to exceptional collaborations, Zenith is proud to introduce its newest Friend of the Brand, world-renowned DJ and producer Carl Cox. An undisputed living legend in electronic music and specifically “techno”, Carl Cox is credited with bringing his craft to new heights and his unique sound to a global audience. From underground rave parties in the 80s to main stage performances at festivals and his own stage at Burning Man as well as his pioneering record label, Carl Cox lives the “time to reach your star” philosophy to the fullest. His perseverance and undeniable talent have propelled him from his humble beginnings to becoming one of the most revered and influential personalities in the world of electronic music. For his first eponymous special edition watch, the DEFY 21 Carl Cox, limited to 200 pieces, Zenith turned up the tempo with a special execution of its futuristic 1/100th of a second chronograph, with a carbon fiber bezel and strap stitching that glow in the dark. For a very personal touch by Carl Cox, the open dial keeps the beat pumping with a rotating disk shaped like a vinyl record at 9 o’clock, serving as a running seconds indicator. “I am very lucky that I am able to share my love of music all over the world. All of us have the power within us to feel the beat and dance – my job is to bring that energy out and to unite everyone on the dancefloor. In a similar way, Zenith is about elevating the art of watchmaking and sharing its innovations with the world, so collaborating with them on a watch with a high-frequency beat felt very natural”, said Carl Cox.
EL PRIMERO A384 REVIVAL Reference: 03.A384.400/21.M384
There are not many movements that can claim the kind of pedigree enjoyed by the El Primero, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. For the first model to be equipped with the groundbreaking movement in 1969, the A384, the brand worked on a new and daring case design. For the bracelet, they sought the expertise of the famed Gay Frères specialist company to create an original and exclusive bracelet that would match the watch’s avant-garde design. The result was the so-called “ladder” bracelet, which featured an unusual open design that boasted superior comfort and a dressier look compared to other sporty steel bracelets of the time. Now, the coveted Ladder bracelet makes its grand return in the A384 Revival, completing the retro look and feel of the revived chronograph icon.
PILOT TYPE 20 RESCUE Reference: 03.2434.679/20.I010
On the subject of icons, Zenith’s line of Pilot watches – specifically the Type 20 collection – is an airborne legend in its own right. Based on the earliest Zenith dashboard instruments that accompanied pioneers like Louis Blériot during the dawn of aviation, the Pilot Type 20 revisits the archetypical Pilot’s Watch design, with a strong vintage accent. Yet until now, the collection has been heavily influenced by the aesthetic of such historical instruments, using a combination of aged case materials and textured colored dials to emulate an early 20th century look. Today, Zenith has revisited its iconic Pilot’s Watch to offer the utility of a modern instrument with all the analog charm of the past. The Pilot Type 20 Rescue and Pilot Type 20 Chronograph Rescue are offered in a stainless steel case with a slate-grey sunray dial, with the signature oversized Arabic numerals entirely made out of Super-LumiNova®.
From the tarmac to the cockpit, yellow is a recurring color in the world of aircrafts that grabs the attention for vital controls and information. Securing this rugged model firmly to the wrist is an aged black calfskin leather strap recalling the classic shearling leather flight jacket, with rivets and a titanium pin buckle as well as a distinctive tab recalling those seen on vintage pilot helmets.
ZENITH: TIME TO REACH YOUR STAR.
Zenith exists to inspire individuals to pursue their dreams and make them come true – against all odds. Since its establishment in 1865, Zenith became the first watch manufacture in the modern sense of the term, and its watches have accompanied extraordinary figures that dreamt big and strived to achieve the impossible – from Louis Blériot’s history-making flight across the English Channel to Felix Baumgartner’s record-setting stratospheric free-fall jump.
With innovation as its guiding star, Zenith features exceptional in-house developed and manufactured movements in all its watches. From the first automatic chronograph, the El Primero, to the fastest chronograph with a 1/100th of a second precision, the El Primero 21, as well as the Inventor that reinvents the regulating organ by replacing the 30+ components with a single monolithic element, the manufacture is always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Zenith has been shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking since 1865, accompanying those who dare to challenge themselves and break barriers. The time to reach your star is now.

How Our Travel Adventures Will Change in 2020
(Bloomberg) –The 2010s were the decade when travel became easier. The arrival of short-term lodging services, the embrace of “second cities,” and the rapid growth of budget airlines both shrunk our globe and made it more intriguing. And the siren song of social media sent us to far-flung corners in search of “authentic,” “local,” and “undiscovered” places, or (contrarily) to recreate influencers’ brilliant snaps.
But if travel became something of a competitive sport in the last 10 years, it’s starting to loosen up. As it turns out, trying to visit every country in the world before turning age 40—or simply checking off three bucket-list cities in a weeklong trip—is exhausting. The overwhelming number of booking channels and sources of inspiration has left travelers confused, too, struggling to figure out how to maximize every minute of their precious vacation days.
That’s why “slow travel,” which lets you get under the skin of a place by simply staying put there for a little longer, is gaining traction. The idea doesn’t just make for more restful time off, it’s also more environmentally sustainable and fulfilling. It underscores the majority of the trends that will reshape the way we think about our adventures in 2020 and beyond.
Enjoy Zero-Footprint Travel
We’ve already told you about carbon offsets and how it’s getting easier to properly offset your flights. But in 2020 that trend will go much further.
Cool Effect, the company we like best for carbon offsets, will release tools to help you offset the carbon footprints of your cruise vacations. Several airlines, including EasyJet, are setting goals to offset their entire fleets’ emissions. And tour operators are getting in on the act, making sure that our footprint on the ground nets out, too. Leading the pack is Natural Habitats, which in 2019 began offering zero-footprint itineraries. Now the company is one-upping that idea by offsetting travelers’ entire lives for a full year if they book one of its Climate Change & Our Wild World trips. (The offset calculations are based on home size, electricity bills, monthly expenses, and air and driving miles.) Led by experts from the World Wildlife Foundation, travelers can venture to see such spectacles as the whale migration in Cabo, the Amazon rainforest, or polar bears in the Arctic.
Other companies that are offsetting trips in 2020 include Metropolitan Touring (which runs wonderful tours and hotels in Colombia and Ecuador) and MSC Cruises. There’s also Intrepid Travel, which is aiming to be carbon negative in the year ahead rather than simply carbon neutral.
Gardens Are the Hot New Hotel Amenity
There isn’t a lot of idyll in our hyperdrive lives, and maybe that’s why gardens are becoming an increasingly popular hotel feature. It sounds quaint, almost boring—and yet that’s the whole point. You can already commune with nature this way in places like Gleneagles, the iconic Scottish estate which just redid its grounds to highlight more authentic local plants and flora rather than imported flowers. At the 300-year-old Dromoland Castle in Ireland, also fresh off a big renovation, you can go on official garden tours with the property’s head gardener, Dorothy Madden.
But rambling grounds are expected in that part of the world. Better proof of the trend lies in the Hamptons, where the new Shou Sugi Ban house puts a spotlight not on the ocean but on meditative Japanese gardens designed by landscape architect Lily Kwong. Or in Marrakesh, where the rambling Royal Mansour includes 3.7 acres by Luis Vallego, who’s been honored with the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan for his work with bonsais. To better highlight its Andalucian-inspired jardin, the hotel is expanding its grounds to include a “nest” where guests can have a private dinner surrounded by palms, vines, and aromatic plants.
The most spectacular example will be just outside Paris, where the new Airelles Château de Versailles will let guests sleep in the palace so beloved for its almost 2,000-acre gardens. Much of the experience will be oriented toward the epic green space—even the Alain Ducasse restaurant on-site will be housed in a glassed-in orangery that trains your eye constantly outdoors.
Your Vacation Will Start Before You Leave Home
If you book a villa at Rosewood’s Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos next year, and if you live in select cities including Chicago, New York, and San Francisco, your stay will begin before you head to the airport: The property is arranging for butlers to greet you at your front door, drive you to your departure hub, and treat you to all sorts of personalized goodies along the way. It’ll also offer the service on the way home to prolong the joy of being on vacation as long as possible.
Similarly, Hawaii’s new Mauna Lani will offer a “pre-arrival experience” when it opens in January, such as sending guests a customized, special-edition Arlo Skye suitcase enclosed with invitations for guided, stand-up paddleboard classes.
Will either of these services deliver something that wealthy travelers need? That’s not so clear. But the race has begun to extend the hotel experience far beyond the limits of the physical property.
All-Inclusive Will No Longer be a Four-Letter Word
Several of the biggest hotel openings for 2019 were of an unusual variety: all-inclusive luxury resorts. But they weren’t exactly branded as such.
Blackberry Mountain opened in February with rates that include everything from meals to hand-thrown pottery and aerial yoga classes. That’s in contrast to its older sibling, the hyperluxurious Blackberry Farm, which charges $175 for a tree-climbing session, $250 for stand-up paddleboarding, and $250 for a seven-course dinner with wine pairings. (Interestingly, even with its built-in activities, the newer, less formal property is far less expensive.)
In Chile, the wine-focused, $1,200-a-night Puro Vik is also new and all-inclusive—you won’t be charged a penny no matter how much of their cabernet sauvignon you drink or how much Andean horseback riding you want to do. And when the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa on Fiji’s Yanuca Island reopened in April, it became all-inclusive, too, recognizing that most guests who visit are happily confined to its offerings.
Even Marriott International is getting in on the act. It acquired the all-inclusive brand Elegant Hotels in October and is renovating all seven of its Caribbean hotels. Says Marriott President Arne Sorenson, “There is a strong and growing consumer demand for premium and luxury properties in the all-inclusive category.”
If you’ve ever spent $32 for the cheapest glass of wine at your hotel in the Maldives, you know all this is a welcome relief. Sure, some all-inclusive models are meant to guarantee that you’ll spend all your vacation budget in one spot. But by definition, they liberate consumers from attaching dollar amounts to each of their desires—and that, really, is priceless.
Travel Clubs Are Cool Again …
Travel clubs might make you think of old-fashioned agencies and AAA programs selling discount trips through generic brochures, but these days they’re turning into something else entirely. They might be one of the most sophisticated ways to book travel.
Take Inspirato Pass, a subscription that acts like an all-you-can-travel buffet. It starts at $2,500 per month, which includes as many nights as you wish in the company’s partner hotels, luxury homes, or even on cruise ships. Certain exclusive experiences, like VIP access to marquee sporting events, are also included. (If you want to book more than one trip at a time, or travel with more than your partner or spouse, the cost gets incrementally higher.)
Third Home, a mansion-sharing platform for people with extraordinary vacation homes, offers its Reserve club that is, well, reserved for those with the most extravagant digs. Members are invited to rent one another’s properties (minimum value: $5 million) at a steep discount.
And then there’s Prior, a membership club for the culturally curious. In its second year, the company is continuing to expand its “Nomadic Clubhouse” events, similar to intimate, members-only parties in spectacular settings. One will celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi at the invitation of the Maharaja of Jaipur; another will spend a long weekend in Uruguay eating fire-cooked meals prepared by the legendary chef Francis Mallmann.
… And So Are Hotel Clubs
For years, hotels emphasized the importance of getting locals in their doors—both to drive ancillary revenues at restaurants and to infuse them with an “authentic” vibe. Now that hotels are legitimate hangouts, the best of them are offering their most alluring spaces only to those who pay up.
See Aman Resorts, whose Manhattan property opens this year with $50 million condos and its first members club. Those who sign up will have exclusive access, along with guests and residents, to the hotel’s three-story spa. Other properties are making similar moves, including the Six Senses (also in New York), the Dorchester Dubai, Auberge’s Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, Texas, and the Almanac Vienna, all opening with membership clubs in the coming year. In some cases, they’re focused on spa and wellness offerings; in others, it’s more about access to frequent events programming and dedicated “living-room-style” areas. Think of them as Soho Houses—with a dash less attitude yet more exclusivity.
Spas Will Become Extremely High Tech
Somadomes, Bod Pods, virtual reality wellness—if you have no idea what these things mean, you will soon. The latter has just debuted at the Four Seasons Resort Oahu, where a spaceship-like device called Sensync claims to “reset” spagoers’ brains by manipulating all five senses. During the 20- to 80-minute journey, a virtual reality headset “takes” guests to deep space, ocean coves, or zen gardens, while the machine pumps out related sounds and smells, simulates things like wind and temperature, and uses real-time data about your respiration and heart rate to guarantee that you’re calming down. The Somadome at Ojai Valley Inn is similar—it’s also a self-contained pod—but focuses instead on meditation and light therapy.
Other spa offerings will be more medical in nature. Gstaad Palace has joined with Cellgym to help clients adjust to Alpine altitudes before their first ski day; treatments involve breathing oxygen-reduced air through a mask, as submarine crews and top athletes sometimes do while training. At the Dolder Grand in Zurich and Four Seasons New York Downtown, aestheticians use confocal miscroscopes to learn about the pigmentation and elasticity of your skin, then send data to a dedicated research center to create a “prescription” of products customized to your needs. (The process takes three months to complete after your initial consultation, which rules out the ensuing, made-to-measure facial for many casual visitors.) And if all this sounds more stressful than relaxing, don’t worry—you can still get a regular, 90-minute massage at all these spots.
Cruises Are Getting Smaller, Greener—and a Whole Lot Cooler
When the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection launches next summer on its maiden voyage, it will be one of several new companies trying to overhaul the way we think about cruising. Across the world, small ships, designed more like boutique residences than floating chunks of Vegas, will make it easier and sexier to see remote coastal places. And no, we’re not talking about 200-passenger vessels already in use by all manner of luxury cruising outfits. These are largely independent, such as the “floating ryokan” Guntu in Japan, which offers contemplative views of the Seto Inland Sea from its sushi bar and 19 suites. There’s also HMS Gåssten, a former Swedish minesweeper (bookable through Red Savannah) that’s been restored and turned into a luxe base for skiing and biking trips in Norway’s Sunmore Alps. Add new standards that require cruise lines to cut their emissions across-the-board, and suddenly this mode of travel seems all that more interesting.

‘Had I not been there, I wouldn’t have met Rudy’: The tale of the Arabian princess and the Trump International Hotel
By Dalton Bennett, Beth Reinhard and Josh Dawsey | Published October 18 at 1:03 PM ET | Washington Post | Posted October 18, 2019 3:40 PM ET |
For two years, the Emirati princess had been battling her estranged husband in Qatari courts for custody of their young son. She was running out of options. So, on the advice of friends “in diplomatic circles,” Princess Hend Al Qassemi traveled from Dubai to a place where she thought she might have a chance encounter with a powerful American official who could help: The Trump International Hotel.
Hend arrived in Washington on June 22, a date she chose to coincide with an event a Virginia women’s group was throwing to celebrate President Trump’s birthday. There, in the hotel lobby, she spotted none other than Rudolph W. Giuliani, personal attorney to the president of the United States.
“Lo and behold, there I was at the right place at the right time and met the right people,” Hend said in a telephone interview with The Washington Post. “Had I not been there, I wouldn’t have met Rudy.”
The previously untold story of the princess in Washington is the latest example of foreign interests seeking access to the administration by turning to the president’s lawyer. It is also a vivid illustration of how the Trump hotel is perceived by some abroad as a portal to American power — and of how, in some cases, it can be exactly that.
Foreign diplomats, lobbyists, political appointees and aspiring Republican officeholders — all are regulars in a daily spectacle of Washington influence at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. Hend is not a professional in that world but believed, correctly, that she could have the ear of a confidant to the president if she just showed up.
In Hend’s telling, her custody case is caught in the political crosscurrents of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, two Persian Gulf nations that broke off relations two years ago. Hend said she is a member of the royal family in Sharjah, one of the emirates, and she says her estranged husband is a cousin of the emir of Qatar. Their divorce is recognized in her country but not in his, she said.
She alleges that, one day in 2017, he pulled their son out of school and took him to Doha, the Qatari capital, without her permission. Hend traveled there and has been reunited with the child, now 11, but has not been permitted to leave the country with him, she said. A legal action she brought is ongoing, she said.
“Mr. Giuliani, an important lawyer, is currently helping me regain custody of my son,” she wrote on Instagram in June, posting a picture of herself with Giuliani in the hotel lobby. “He is currently the lawyer for #PresidentTrump and is helping me end this #UnfairBattle.”
The princess told The Post that Giuliani boasted of his past work in Doha but told her that, because he represented the president, he was no longer doing business with Qatari clients. Giuliani arranged for her to meet a lawyer in New York City as well as a longtime friend and former business partner, lobbyist Tony Carbonetti, she said.
Hend said that she met with Giuliani again at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, and that she continued to press him for help after her return to Doha.
Giuliani said in an interview that he initially thought Hend could be a paying client but concluded after talking with her that he could not help. Giuliani said the lawyer, whom he did not identify, told him he could not either.
“It was a total sob story,” Giuliani said. “I never lobbied the government on her behalf or made a dollar off of it.”
He said his past work for Qatar was part of a cybersecurity matter that involved “solving a hack.” Giuliani has continued to represent other foreign clients since becoming Trump’s attorney last year, breaking from long-standing protocols.
Several days after she left Washington, Carbonetti met Hend at the Baccarat Hotel in New York City. He said he did not contact anyone in the U.S. government on her behalf and was not paid by her. He said he “passed her case off” to the Qatari embassy.
Carbonetti, who was once managing director of the consulting and security firm Giuliani Partners, said Giuliani reached out to him because he was a registered Qatari agent. Carbonetti’s firm, Blueprint Advisors, is paid $300,000 every three months by the Embassy of Qatar, according to lobbying records.
“Rudy called me up and said she had a hardship case and asked me if I would listen to her,” Carbonetti told The Post. “I did.”
The princess said that, in the days after she met with Carbonetti, she received a legal summons related to the custody case that required her to return immediately to Doha. She said she suspects Qatari authorities had become aware of her efforts in the United States, perhaps from her social media postings, and wanted to divert her.
“I think they saw the picture,” she said. “I think that when they saw I met up with Rudy, it was too close to home for them.”
The government of Qatar declined to comment for this story. Efforts to reach Hend’s estranged husband through the Embassy of Qatar were not successful.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment. Giuliani said he never raised Hend’s case with Trump, and there is no indication the president ever became aware of it.
Less than two weeks after she met Giuliani, Trump hosted the top Qatari official, Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, at the White House. The president described him as a “highly respected man, a real leader” whose government is “investing very heavily in our country.”
In 2017, the UAE and three other Arab nations severed relations with Qatar and imposed a land and air blockade, alleging that Qatar aided militant Islamist groups. The U.S. has sought to maintain close military and diplomatic relations with all of these countries — including Qatar, an energy-rich nation that is home to a major base for U.S. military operations in the Middle East.
“There is currently a cold war happening, and my son is caught in the middle of it,” Hend said.
Hend’s trip to the Trump hotel came after months of her seeking advocates for her cause, which has been championed by some in far-right social media. Among them is Mohammad Tawhidi, an Australian Muslim cleric and outspoken critic of Qatar.
Tawhidi and the princess have never met. He told The Post that he appealed to U.S. officials in recent months — he declined to say to whom but was ignored.
Hend said she doesn’t agree with all the arguments made by Tawhidi, who calls himself the “imam of peace.” She is dismayed, she said, by his frequent accusations that Muslim political and religious leaders sponsor terrorism. But she added: “The enemy of my enemy is my friend . . . I’ve had random people try and help me.”
Tawhidi’s tweets caught the attention of Emediong Akpabio, a Nigerian who describes himself as a human rights activist. Akpabio launched an online petition on the princess’s behalf that has collected several hundred signatures.
In Washington, Giuliani was not the only influential person to whom Hend turned for help. A couple months before staying at Trump’s hotel, she reached out to a well-connected lobbyist for a Persian Gulf nation. The lobbyist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case, provided The Post with records of their communications.
Members of the Qatari royal family “are acting like monsters,” she told the lobbyist, adding, “I am not looking for a scandal or money. I just want my baby back.”
But her visit to Washington in June signaled a new phase in her search for a powerful political fixer. “I didn’t go to Saudi, Kuwait or Oman,” she said. “I went to the big boys. I went to America.”
Hend said she had heard from acquaintances in diplomatic circles — she declined to identify them — that pro-Trump events are frequently held at the hotel in the District. “At these events you can meet Republicans and people from the administration, which is what happened,” she said.
The June reception she attended drew several hundred people to the hotel’s main ballroom on a Sunday afternoon. Tickets cost between $150 and $5,000, according to an online registration page. A Post reporter was also present.
Two speakers credited Trump with saving their lives; one woman said a letter from Trump revived her on her deathbed, while another said she was considering suicide when she saw him appear on television.
Another speaker, Lucretia Hughes, recalled seeing as a child a “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” episode on TV that showed a solid-gold toilet in the Trump home.
“I’m going to sit at your toilet someday,” she thought at the time. Hughes finished her remarks by leading the crowd in a chant of “God! Family! Country! Trump!”
The princess was seated at a prominent table, with several of the speakers and the event’s emcee. Alice Butler-Short, the founder of Virginia Women for Trump, the for-profit group throwing the event, asked her to stand and be recognized after having traveled so far to attend.
In an interview this week, Butler-Short said Hend did not mention the custody battle. She recalled receiving a WhatsApp message from Hend’s assistant before the event, saying that she wanted to attend. Butler-Short had never heard of the princess.
“This sounds kind of suspicious,” Butler-Short said she thought at the time. Later she became convinced that Hend really was royalty. “Oh God, I better be polite,” she told herself.
More than a month after her two-day stay at the hotel, Hend again pressed Giuliani for help.
“Rudy, where are you?” she texted on Aug. 1. “I’m sorry for being troublesome but there are no relations between Qatar and most Arab states.”
Giuliani was on his way to a different part of the world.
“Headed for Madrid,” he texted back. He was en route, he recently acknowledged, to press Ukrainian officials to investigate Trump’s political rivals.
