North America’s first Sikh Gurdwara was built in 1908 at 1866 West 2nd Avenue, close to the False Creek sawmills where so many Indo-Canadians worked. In the 1960s, as the Punjabi community grew in Vancouver, the Khalsa Diwan Society (KDS) sought a larger place of worship. They bought a chunk of land from the city, at Ross and Marine, close to the Fraser River sawmills where yet more Indo-Canadians worked. That didn’t stop thousands of people from filling the muddy grounds in November 1969 to check the project’s progress. The structure was set into a steep hillside and the original plans called for a moat around it. The trench was never officially filled with water, but Vancouver rain took care of that. During the celebration, two kids fell off a walkway that had yet to receive railings and plunged into the 15-foot-deep “puddle.” Fortunately, there were no alligators in the moat, as a prank among builders had suggested there would be. (The prank note leaked to the public and drew a swarm of looky-loos to the work site to peer over the perimeter berms.) The children emerged unharmed.

As the Gurdwara rose, rifts in the KDS deepened. Moderate Sikhs clashed with fundamentalists over what the temple should look like and how it should be run. Tara Singh Bains, who was on the KDS building committee, covers this friction in his 1995 autobiography, The Four Quarters of the Night, which he co-wrote with SFU historian Hugh Johnston. Bains worried that the moderates wanted a community centre with secular trappings: “a place that could be used for parties, or even as a dance hall.” The more orthodox members wanted a sanctuary for prayer and didn’t know what to make of Erickson’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows on the main and basement levels which made the place feel like a “big, business showroom.”

Ironically it was glass that darkened the temple’s opening day celebration. A boy was running through the gallery and did not see a panel of glass that had been erected for sound insulation. The 12 year old shattered the sheet and was rushed to hospital. It was a bloody christening on Baisakhi, April 15, 1970.
