Cedric Morris & Arthur Lett Haines with their macaw Rubio (c.1930's)
Cedric Haines and Arthur Lett Haines were both artists and lived what can only be described as an eccentric and bohemian lifestyle. The pair met in 1918, and soon became known for their fancy dress parties attended by notable figures of the day such as painter Augustus John, actor JohnGeilgud, and Royal Ballet choreographer Frederick Ashton. Though Ernest Hemingway, who met them in Paris, was irritated by what he called their 'superior, simpering composure', most people encountering Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, who 'dined on wild swan and drank to excess,' and who may best be described as professional bohemians, were enchanted. The pair stayed together until Arthur Lett Haines passed away in 1978. Cedric Morris passed away four years later. Obituaries made no mention of their relationship.

Plant of the Day
Monday 11 September 2023
The pastel strain Papaver rhoeas ‘Mother of Pearl’ (field poppy, cornfield poppy, ‘Cedric Morris’) were developed by the artist and gardener Sir Cedric Morris (1889-1982). He spent many years looking for and selecting unusual colours of cornfield poppy which resulted in a strain of lovely dusky pinks and whites, muddy mauves and smokey greys rather than the usual bright red flower.
