“El Mayarah”: a Super-Cat One-Shot.
The jackahammering of Cat’s heartbeat was a distraction that was only adding to the stress of Kara’s day. Sure, none of the rest was anything that Kara couldn’t handle, she could take angry phone calls and arrogant douchebags talking down to her, no sweat. But this? This was always different, especially given the fact that she had to act like ‘Kara Danvers: dutiful assistant’ and nothing else, especially with so many prying eyes around. It was a role she was begrudgingly happy to play, except for times like right now.
Peering into Cat’s office, she saw Cat on the phone, her voice and tone growing increasingly more exasperated as the seconds ticked on. It was its own form of agony for the heroic-brained Kara, to sit there and watch the woman she loved and cared so much about in some sort of verbal altercation that had her heartbeat spiking. Could she have listened in? Absolutely, she was tailor-made for it, but out of respect for her secret paramour, she decided to take the more… human approach.
Closing her laptop, she picked up her tablet, then stood up and shuffled towards the office, giving a small knock before entering. Cat looked up, and her face was… well, it was almost impossible to read. Multiple emotions were splashed around it like a Jackson Pollock painting, and for the briefest of seconds, Kara debated whether she made the right move. However, Kara recognized something in Cat’s eyes she hadn’t seen at the office before: a small pleading. It was brief, and evaporated as soon as it arrived, but that was all the Girl of Steel needed to bolster her resolve and dive in head first.
Cat finished the altercation with a snarky dig and a thud as she slammed her phone down on its cradle, sighing in total exasperation.
“I take it that… didn’t go well?” Kara asked a bit tentatively, slowly approaching Cat’s desk. Even with invulnerability and other superpowers, Kara Danvers still knew well enough to approach Cat with caution when she was like this. Not so much out of fear, but out of an over-abundance of not wanting her brashness to push Cat’s already momentarily-manic behavior to an even bigger crescendo.
Cat looked up at her and inhaled, her face all but screaming ‘what was your first clue, genius!?’, but the earnestness in her ever-dutiful assistant, and superhero-secret-girlfriend, was enough to cut through most of the vitriol Cat felt the desire to send. It was a superpower that still beguiled the older woman, even if she both loved and hated it.
“No, it… did not.” Cat admitted, a large sigh of defeat deflating the usually prim-and-proper Queen-of-All-Media.
“Do you… wanna talk about it?” Kara asked, opening her tablet to check the schedule. “You’re free until 2, maybe we could take an… early lunch?” Kara asked, her nerves apparent, which was even further disarming of the foul-mooded Media empress.
“Sure, just make sure wherever we go they have a salad with a cheeseburger on it.” Cat groaned, pushing back from her desk and standing up, her purple, knee-length dress cutting a magnificent figure that Kara couldn’t really ignore. She didn’t linger for long, but oh, how she could’ve. Cat saw enough to notice, and the blush that flashed across her cheeks triggered the same response in return.
Striding around her desk, Cat joined the spectacled blonde and the pair walked towards the elevators in silence. Both women were doing mental gymnastics trying to figure out how to even start the conversation that would come, while keeping that air of ‘business professionalism’ that would keep the majority of CatCo off their scent.
Making it to the elevator bank, Kara scurried ahead to press the button, trying to make up any seconds that she could to get the pair someone where they could talk, hopefully with fewer prying eyes wondering why the pair were locked in such a deep conversation. “I hope Noonan’s is ok, it’s close, and they put a cheeseburger salad on the secret menu just for you…” Kara finally piped up, a crook of a smile sneaking onto her lips, which vanished instantly when there was no attempt of a reply. And a silent Cat was the deadliest Cat.
Finally, the doors opened and both women shuffled in, the awkward tension only getting more palpable as the two were now in a small, confined space, so much so Kara could feel her resolve to stay stoic and ‘not doing anything to arouse suspicion’ wearing thin. While Cat wasn’t saying or showing anything, Kara could still hear Cat’s heartbeat pounding in her ears, and it was enough of a clue to let the Kryptonian know something about the storm inside the woman.
No sooner than the doors closed and the elevator began to drop, Kara turned and engulfed Cat in a hug. Initially Cat remained stoic, long enough that Kara almost gave up and let go, but then Kara felt an arm snake around her waist, and Cat turned and reciprocated the embrace, even if just for the briefest of moments. There was no telling if the elevator would make it to the main lobby without stopping, so Cat took the risk of both ‘playing it safe’ whilst reassuring the unsure Kara she wasn’t ignoring her attempts to console her.
Kara’s breath hitched as she felt Cat reaching back to her, and it was a moment of relief that couldn’t have come soon enough. All the superpowers in the world at her disposal, and Kara never felt more powerless than when she knew Cat was hurting, but she couldn’t do much about it but try to break through from the outside. It was always a gamble with anywhere from middling and meager success, but if it was what she had to work with, she would make the best of it. “Do you want to talk about it, Cat?” Kara whispered into her ear, as Kara clung to her lover as tightly as she could, knowing there no more than a handful of seconds before she had to let go and go back to ‘platonic-assistant’ mode.
“Not here, please.” Cat replied, her words a tone that almost threw Kara. She had heard angry Cat, a lot.
Frustrated Cat as well. Occasionally happy, which was a newer experience given their shift in dynamic, but this.. this tone hit Kara like a Kryptonite bomb exploding in her face: defeated Cat.
Kara just nodded, and sensing the lobby was fast approaching, let go of her embrace and turned to face the door, the warmth of Cat still on her cheek as she sighed in her own micro-form of defeat. But of the many things Kara Zor-El was, she was first and foremost a fighter, especially for the things she loved enough to try to protect.
All too soon, the doors opened, and the pair fell back into a passable level of friendliness that made everyone else none-the-wiser, even if Kara wished more than anything she could reach her hand over and snake her fingers through Cat’s, and squeeze her hand to give her a small reminder that someone was there for her. Someone who loved her desperately.
Arriving at Noonan’s, Kara took the lead, and they were seated in a more secluded booth towards the back, though the air of awkward tension once again hung thick between them. It was accentuated by Cat ordering herself one of her favorite cocktails, and a particularly strong one at that.
“That good, huh?” Kara quipped once the server left, before her eyes went wide and she covered her mouth. “Oh, I’m sorry, Miss Grant..” she immediately apologized, before Cat waved her off.
“Kara, it’s fine… and please, we’re not upstairs, call me Cat…” she asked, showing the tinges of her more-normal personality as they sat in the secluded booth, largely out of the prying eyes of the public. Kara nodded obediently, then began to ponder on her next plan of attack.
“Carter’s father decided that today was the day to call and excoriate me for all my failings as a mother…” Cat opened up, throwing Kara slightly for a loop, pulling her from her mental gameplanning.
“Psh, like he has room to talk…” Kara bandied back, but she could tell this wasn’t just a garden-variety ‘Cat’s asshole ex called’ sort of conversation. “Cat, what did he say?”
“‘God, Kitty, how is anyone else ever going to put up with your shitty attitude’..” Cat repeated, almost without blinking, the words like whips across her skin, “‘You’re too fucking much.. I pity the next person who has to try to deal with it.’”
Kara’s heart sank into her stomach. Multiple emotions flashed through her body as she vacillated between every emotion from disgust, to heartbreak, and downright rage as the words played over and over in her head. Steeling herself, Kara took a breath and looked the older woman in the eyes.
“Well, he’s obviously wrong, Cat, you have to know that.” Kara stated plainly, but dripping with as much subtextual emotion as she could muster.
“Is he though?” Cat countered back, sighing in exasperation.
“Yes! Cat, c’mon… you have to know that.” Kara quietly pleaded, starting to lean in, before pulling back when she heard the server coming back with their drinks. Cat took her martini glass and basically downed it in one go.
“She’ll take another… thanks.” Kara ordered it for her, Cat raising her eyebrows in a small ‘thank you’. After the server excused herself, Kara turned her entire attention back to the object of her affection, and re-engaged with the verbal sparring session to come. “Ok, so, Cat… let’s talk this out: how is he right?”
Cat let out a restrained guffaw, then met Kara’s gaze. “How isn’t he, Kara? I mean, look at me, look at my whole career… it’s not an accident that I’ve built up such a frigid, ice queen aesthetic in my ascent to where I am.”
“No, it was necessary because women don’t have the same path to success that men do. Remember Perry and the chair?” Kara reminded Cat of an earlier conversation they had. “And that’s all irrelevant because I KNOW everything he said was bullshit.” Kara added, the nonchalant profanity always good for a momentary tension break.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to ‘Sunny’ Kara Danvers cussing…” Cat smirked, the blush on Kara’s face only selling the moment of relief even more.
“You’re stalling, Cat.” Kara smirked back, as the server brought the second martini, this one lasting long enough to rest on the table where the first one should’ve been.
Cat threw up her hands in a momentary admission of doing just that, before resting them back in her lap and meandering right back into the conversation, though from a very different way. “Kara.. how do you do it?”
Kara looked at her puzzled, feeling like she was called on in school to answer a question that she had NO clue about. “How do I do… what?” She asked, visibly squinting and trying to figure out this sudden shift.
“How do you do it all? Me, your family, your.. super-lative exploits. How do you do it all?” Cat asked, giving clarification that startled the Kryptonian. Why would she ask her that? It was Cat who taught Kara many a valuable lesson when Kara asked HER those same words.
“I’m sorry, what?” Kara replied, visibly dumbfounded. “Cat, you taught me how to do it… whether by your words or your actions.”
“Oh..” Cat replied, blush collecting on her cheeks. “But I certainly didn’t teach you how to be so… chipper about it.” She added with a bit of a sigh.
“No, you didn’t… but…” Kara replied immediately, lingering long enough to make Cat look up at her with intrigue in her eyes.
“You, my family, this city… that’s what makes me so, as you say, ‘chipper’.” Kara explained.
“Me? Frigid ice queen bit….” Cat began to mutter in contempt about herself.
“Cat, please, stop.” Kara cut her off, eyes simple, but pleading. “Don’t call the woman I love something she isn’t.”
Cat froze, and just looked at her with a puzzled expression
“Just because some asshole who couldn’t hack it as your other-half wants to gripe because you’re more of a man than he ever will be, doesn’t mean you get to beat yourself up for being a strong, confident woman who knows what she wants and will not settle for less.” Kara uttered succinctly, eyes trained on the media empress just like she was locked in a dialogue with one of the many villains Supergirl faced in her short career so far. “What was he even mad about, anyways? There’s no way he called JUST to complain about your attitude.”
Cat, still reeling from watching her younger paramour flashing a bit of energy that felt… well, familiar, collected herself and answered, “He was complaining about the arrangements around Christmas.. he wanted to keep Carter into Christmas morning, and I resisted.”
“Well, yeah, we have plans Christmas morning. So that’s a non-starter.” Kara deflected plainly. “He argued for the arrangements in the divorce decree, so he can suck it.”
That utterance made Cat crack up. “Somehow I don’t think he will see it that way. And wow, I forget how feisty you can get when you’re angry.”
Kara’s face turned red, but she pushed through. “I’m serious, Cat. This is what he asked for, so don’t take the blame when he decides to blame you for him trying to mess everything up. You take so much on your shoulders, Cat… don’t take his bullshit too. Or, at the very least… let me help.” Kara turned from anger to pleading in 4-words flat.
“Kara, darling.. you’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know.. I mean, for god’s sake, I owe you so much for your… super-latives..” Cat deflected, her well-worn instinct to go it alone in most facets rearing it’s head.
“Not as Supergirl, and not as ‘Sunny’ Kara Danvers, dutiful assistant… let me, Kara Zor-El, just a silly girl from a dead world, help. You don’t have to do this alone. Not anymore.” Kara pleaded, resisting the overwhelming urge to reach over and squeeze her hand.
Cat found herself at a bit of a loss for words, and was grateful when the server re-emerged to take their order, Cat her usual cheeseburger salad and Kara something that they both knew was a fraction of what she needed, but suspicion would be the least of their worries if Kara ordered as much food as she needed.
The momentary interruption was enough to cool the tensions in the air around them, and it allowed Cat a chance to think, even if at first it was just a resounding ‘Why in the HELL would she want in on this?!’
“Kara, I…. It’s just…” Cat started to explain, though she was still visibly searching for exactly what to say.
“Cat, remember? We are stronger TOGETHER. Even if we still have to have some distance between us.” Kara jumped back in, her protector instincts on full-blast.
“But, why? Why do you want so ardently to jump into my crazy, messed-up life?” Cat bantered back, words as venomless as they were pointed.
Kara let out a small chuckle with her exasperated sigh. “Because I love you, Cat. And it’s not your crazy, messed-up life… it’s OUR crazy, messed-up life. I mean, all you have is a shitty ex and business stress… I bring people with powers and vendettas who will actually try to kill you… if anything, I should be apologizing to you.”
“No. Never.” Cat shot back, taking a bit of strength back in that moment, because there was many things Kara Danvers needed to do, but apologizing for being herself was NOT one of them. “Don’t apologize for being the second-greatest thing in my life. Sorry, Carter’s #1.”
“Absolutely no offense taken, he deserves it.” Kara replied, that smile returning to her lips. “He’s a great kid, he gets it from his mother.” Cat blushed and nodded.
“But that’s all beside the point, Kara..” Cat relented, the moment of possible peace dashed by Cat’s worry and self-doubt.
“Then what is the point, Cat, that you’re this… unlovable mega-bitch that deserves to sit alone on her throne overlooking a world that fears her?” Kara asked, the hurt bubbling up in her words as she dug her heels in, proverbially, and was ready for another round. “Because that’s not what I see, at all… and it’s not even close.”
“Then enlighten me, Kara.” Cat shot back, a bit of sarcasm bubbling over on her end. Sorry, see, I just..”
Kara lifted a hand as if to say ‘Stop’, and Cat fell silent. “Cat, I need you to do two things for me, right now, please?” Kara asked, her usual tone replaced with just as much warmth, but with a bit more of a bold, confident tone, more likely to tumble out of the lips of the Girl of Steel. Cat nodded, remaining quiet, her slight shock and intrigue sending her mind ablaze.
“Ok, first thing, you want to know what I see? What the world sees? Then I need you to listen, and not have a comeback. Second, I need you to trust me. Can you do that?” Kara asked, Cat looking at her in bemused shock. ‘When did we Freaky-Friday?’ She mused to herself.
“Yes, Kara, go ahead, I’m listening.” Cat replied, her tone subdued, but her eyes were glued to the blonde Kryptonian.
“Ok, thank you.” Kara smiled, before taking a deep breath. “How I see you… how the world sees you… is as a brave, strong, badass woman who doesn’t apologize for who she is. She’s not perfect, no one is, but she is fearless and doesn’t let anyone stop her from accomplishing anything she puts her mind to. For Rao’s sake, she conquered an industry that was tailor-made to exclude her.”
“You have a point.” Cat replied, before realizing immediately what she had started.
“Oh, Cat, I always have a point.” Kara quipped immediately, the smile on her face dripping with ‘you know I had to’-energy. “But, wanna know her secret weapon?”
“A blonde Kryptonian that always takes her breath away?” Cat let slip, seeing Kara shoot a bit of a ‘babe, seriously?’ look. “Sorry, no comebacks, understood.”
“No, it’s the Cat that no one else gets to see, except me and Carter. It’s the woman who loves so deeply she would fight anyone to protect us. It’s the woman who cares so deeply about the world she lives in she shouts from the rooftops about the things that matter. It’s the woman who loves when she’s scared, and refuses to back down from the truth. That’s your secret weapon, Cat… your heart. Don’t let some asshole in there to ruin it…. Even if one day that asshole is me.” Kara laid out, her words off-the-cuff, but they sounded so engrained they couldn’t be new.
Cat, for the first time in a long time, was purely speechless. How was any of this real? She had to be asleep, right? Had she woken up this morning? This was all so overwhelming, she was struggling to keep up.
“Kara, I…” Cat attempted a reply, but she was still unable to grasp English, and her face being as red as it was, Kara didn’t have to guess why.
Kara, feeling the wave of power still in her veins, looked around briefly, before taking the moment and leaning over the table, and stealing a peck on her cheek. “I love you, Cat, I want this… let me help you as much as you’ve helped me.” Kara playfully begged, eyes dripping with emotion as she pulled back.
“I…. I’ll try.” Cat finally formed the words, the display of possibly-compromising vulnerability was enough to make Cat’s head keep spinning, even as she was regaining human function.
“Ok, that’s all I can ask for.” Kara smiled, resting back in her seat, an almost smugly-proud smile creeping on her lips.
“You’re just full of surprises, Danvers… remind me to never underestimate you.” Cat admitted with a blush.
“Oh, I don’t have to, there’s an article from this really badass journalist about it, I’ll send you the link.” She added, enjoying her moment way too much, but Cat had to admit it looked good on her in the moment.
Cat cracked up, a wide smile painting itself across her face. “I’ve created a monster… someone call Superman…”
“… that’s not funny!” Kara pouted, before breaking back out in the same sunny smile that Cat wanted to see every morning when she woke up. Forever.

Where Plumerias Bloom - 19.
Lena sighs and pushes her laptop away, the spreadsheets she had been forced to double check all blurring into one after hours of staring at the screen. Her thoughts have been straying towards Andrea all morning, the train-track crease between her brows growing deeper as she glances towards her cell phone and notices there are still no new notifications.
She tries her hardest to be patient, well aware that this morning will have been incredibly difficult for Andrea, but Lena’s chewed thumb nail tattles on her true state of mind.
Lena won’t be able to settle until she hears from her.
For all of their teasing and joking around, Lena is painfully aware that Andrea’s situation is serious and that it would have taken a lot of inner strength for someone as stubborn as her to submit to Cat’s punishment.
Especially when Andrea has spent the last decade fighting every single authority figure in her life with a borderline feral vigor.
And, assuming it did indeed go ahead, Lena is glad that Andrea has stumbled upon someone who is able—and willing—to pull her back from the edge before she can do too much damage to herself and her reputation. Lena is actually proud of her best friend for allowing herself to be tucked underneath someone’s wing and she prays that her newfound trust in Cat Grant is warranted.
Groaning, Lena pushes herself away from the desk and heads down to the office canteen. Her brother and Lillian are out of town on some secret business, so at least she can’t get yelled at for taking a break.
Lena steadfastly ignores the creepy guy who follows Lex around like a lost puppy and pours herself a coffee, avoiding all eye contact with him until the weirdo leaves and closes the door behind him. She deflates with a heavy sigh and glances at the clock, her tongue clicking in annoyance as she realizes that she’s still stuck here for another three hours at the very least.
Lex and Lillian’s business trip, which is probably something shady as Hell, is the first break Lena has had from feeling their breath down the back of her neck. It’d be more enjoyable, though, if she hadn’t been left with a ton of crappy little jobs to complete in order to keep her out of trouble.
She sighs again and is just about to top up her coffee mug when her phone vibrates in her pocket.
“Andrea,” Lena breathes out, answering within a split second, “are you alright?”

Pride - Supercat - 2024
I think these two would be match made in a boxing ring and I'm okay with that!
All Time Favorite Scene of Supergirl The scene above was the moment everything changed for me. Although, Supergirl the show plays an important role in my life, given that it led me down a path of self-discovery. That was more Sanvers. Here, this was one of my favorite scenes in the series and it was the reason I became so obsessed with the show and I was disappointed when the move to the CW…

constantly thinking about the PERFECT setup supergirl season 1 had to make kara queer;
"oh my god, you're a lesbian" – winn to kara, in the very FIRST episode.
"hell, i wanna date her" – kara, about lucy lane.
"she does kinda give off a sapphic vibe, with that big old butch S chestplate" – leslie willis (livewire) about supergirl.
there were so many other instances in s1 alone, let alone in later seasons when lena showed up (recounting every queer-coded supercorp interaction would require a whole podcast). it was the PERFECT pretext to make her even just a little bit fruity, but the cw just couldn't handle it i guess
#QUEER kara danvers#because i said so#i'm rewatching s1 rn and it's insane how much queer coding they had weaved into the show's core#only for the cw to take it and do absolutely nothing with it#this is my villain origin story#i'm a supercorp shipper first and foremost but i really can't resist a good supercat or supergirl x livewire fic#the sapphicism was just perfect in s1#cat grant owner of catco also known as owner of my ass#i get the appeal behind the supercat ship i really do#cw supergirl#supergirl#supercorp#kara danvers#kara zor el

Ok, first off, I’d like to thank EVERYONE who showed their support for my first attempt at just showing my sapphic ramblings to the world. You are all amazing, and incredible, and just… means the world to me. 2024 has been a trying year, but also given me a lot of happy-firsts. :)
So, regardless, thank you for spending a few seconds reading my mini-obsessions. It means literally the world to me. (Both Earth AND Krypton. 💜☀️)
Oh, and while I’m here…. Maybe I could dust off another snippet. Now, for context, the two aren’t necessarily connected, they were both written for two separate issues *MY* ‘Cat’ has had in years past, each sparked inspiration.
That being said, this one would prolly take place before the first one, and yes, you’ll notice some similar beats to the first one… suppose I know my own tropes well… so, apologies if they are a bit too heavy-handed… but I am who I am. Lolz
Also? This one…. Might have a rumbling of a part 2, which would lead to the event teased near the end.
Regardless, enjoy! 🧡🤍
“You Don’t Get to Talk to Her That Way…”
Kara knew better than to listen in, especially to this particular conversation, but between her sense of morbid curiosity, and overall feeling that she should know about this conversation too, Kara tuned her super-hearing to pick up the conversation happening inside Cat’s office, between her and her mother.
“Kitty, darling, how are you?” Katherine asked in her usual, high-brow way, even if the intent of the words was to be more of a knife in the back.
“Mother, what do you want?” The younger Grant asked, hand already massaging her left temple as she held her phone to her ear with her right, she could already feel the headache coming on.
“Wow, that harsh even for you, Kitty.” Katherine all but tisked, that tone making Cat’s blood boil internally as she tried to keep her cool, but given what she assumed this conversation was about, she was already on edge.
“Mother, what do you want??” She repeated, her words more pointed and venomous as her heart rate began to accelerate, giving Kara even more reason for pause, even if she managed to keep the appearance she was deep into researching something for the board meeting later that day for Cat.
“Fine, we’ll dispense with the pleasantries…” Katherine replied before sighing in what Cat knew was mock annoyance. A way to glamourize her plight in the phone with her “ungrateful” spawn. “I called because I saw the article in the Planet about you and…. Her.”
The ending of the sentence was steeped in moderate disdain, as if she was calling to tell a drunken frat boy to send his evening booty call home so she could get some sleep. That fact alone sent Cat right to the edge of her limits…. It was going to be touch-and-go from here on out, enough so even Kara stopped to look and see what Cat’s face looked like.
“Of course you read it in the Daily Planet…” Cat groused, rolling her eyes in irritation. “Would it kill you to buy a newspaper that I own?”
“The Planet’s record is unmatched, Kitty, don’t get your panties in a bunch.” Her mother admonished.
“I’m not…” Cat grit her teeth. “I just hoped eventually you’d take pride in something your daughter made..” she added with a very heavy passive-aggressive edge.
“Oh don’t be silly, Kitty…”
“My name is Cat.” She cut her mother off, her words tumbling out with almost the full venom that Cat usually reserved for indignant men of all privilege-types. “And her name is Kara.”
“I know who she is, Kit… Cat.” Katherine replied, begrudgingly changing course mid-way to say what her daughter wanted to hear. “But honestly? Just have a weekend fling to clear your head then get back to…”
“No.” Cat interjected again, her tone firm but reserved, which stood in stark-contrast to the red-faced woman clutching her phone tight enough to lose circulation, not to mention how her heart was jackhammering inside her chest.
That was when Kara gave up any other pretenses and excused herself to enter Cat’s office, waving plaintively, which gave Cat all the signal she needed to know Kara was not entering the room by cruel happenstance.
“You don’t get to talk about her that way, mother.” Cat jabbed back, not even hiding her contempt. “Call back when you can learn at least a modicum of human decency.”
Cat slammed the phone down on the cradle, and immediately cradled her head in her hands, leaving Kara a bit surprised. Their relationship had just finally hit the public scene a week ago, after an all-too-brief 6-months of time to just, be… together. Cat had dreaded this call every single day since the word dropped, from an article published by Cat herself, wanting to get out ahead of it before someone scooped it and made it into something much more nefarious than it ever was or could be. So in a way she was almost glad the call happened, up until she compared Kara to some… drunken frat boy she needed to fuck and get over by Monday.
“Hey… so… I assume that didn’t go well.” Kara finally piped up, her discomfort a bit noticeable, but she kept most of it under-wraps. Who knew the Girl of Steel had, or needed, such obscure powers, Cat silently mused to herself, as she could see enough to know her feelings, but not enough to know them all.
“How much of it did you happen to hear?” Cat replied without even thinking, her demeanor shifting nebulously as she tried to calm herself down from the mood that had her slamming the phone down hard enough to make her own body wince.
Kara pursed her lips, and momentarily weighed her options, but the Queen of All Media, interviewer of despots and douchebags, and the occasional not-deplorable, saw all she needed to see.
“So, all of it.” She groaned, before looking up from her forlorn position to make eye-contact. “I’m sorry, Kara.” She spoke succinctly and heartfeltly, her dalliances in ‘Keira’ all but evaporating once she had no reason to have the misspoken name as a way to keep herself in control of the woman she mocked as “Sunny” Keira Danvers, insufferably goody-goody Girl Scout. She had already eaten all the crow she deserved and more for that jab, and was even pleasantly surprised when Kara actually liked the moniker of “Sunny”. So, who was Cat to argue with the woman she was somehow always enamored with? Even when she was too afraid to own her own feelings?
“Ms. Grant, it’s ok… it’s just…” Kara began to assuage her paramour, as she always did.
“No, Kara, it’s not!” She insisted, her eyes filling with rage, rage that Kara knew better than to assume was aimed at her. “She does not get to talk about you that way… like you’re just… some silly fling I’ll get over by Monday.”
“Ok…” Kara replied, a bit taken aback. She wasn’t totally unaware of Cat being like this… but to have it be about her was certainly something she was still getting used to.
“I mean it, she doesn’t get to disparage someone as good as you, I won’t allow it. She had no right to assume you’re just some… floozy who I’m only interested in because she’s good in bed… not to say you aren’t, but you know what I mean, yes?” Cat added, her vamping was another new development, something that Kara was both surprised by, and totally enamored with. She knew Cat was head-to-toe a strong, confident woman… but to see these moment of insecurity, of vulnerability, it just managed to show Kara there was ways she could love her even more.
“It’s ok, Ms. Grant, I get it…” Kara assuaged her lover, walking behind the desk to get the distance of the desk from between them.
“So, how long til you think she calls back?” Kara asked, when of course, because pitch-perfect irony, the phone rang. Both women winced at the blaring tone, but Kara, being Kara, picked it up without skipping a beat.
“Cat Grant’s office, this is Kara, how may I help you?” She asked with perfect customer-service tone, even as her face was riddled with all the visual hallmarks of annoyance and disdain.
“Oh, it’s you…” Katherine replied, her own disgust much more telegraphed in her voice.
“It sure is, did you need something, Mrs. Grant?” Kara asked, sure to make sure her voice was so sweet and saccharine that Katherine could squirm on her end of the phone.
“Just to speak to my daughter. Post haste.” Katherine annoyedly added, as if irritated that she needed to even voice the request.
Kara looked at Cat to gage if she even wanted to be talked to. After a few moments of silent contemplation, Cat sighed and picked up her head to give her a free hand to take the phone.
“Alright, here she is… have a good day, Mrs. Grant..” Kara added, biting her tongue before she said something a bit too far for the snark and smarm of the present moment.
“Yes, Mother? Called to apologize for calling my GIRLFRIEND a weekend-only floozy?” Cat shot back, not losing a bit of her edge from the previous conversation.
“Kitty, honestly, do you expect me to go through this whole charade?” Katherine asked bluntly, her tone devoid of empathy.
“You’ll never know what I expected out of you, mother, and that’s your loss. Just like… you know what, no… Mother, new deal..” Cat replied, as the wheels were turning in her head.
“Against my better judgment, I will forget all about this… abhorrent waste of my time if you’ll agree to one thing.” Cat began to lay her case, like a prosecutor leading the witness to the exact spot she wanted them.
Katherine sighed, making little effort to hide it from her daughter’s ears. “And what exactly is this ‘one thing’ you expect of me?”
“Dinner. You, me, Kara, and Carter.” Cat explained. “I’m sure your grandson would love to see you, and… you may as well get to know the woman I intend to spend the rest of my life with.” Cat said boldly, the words even making Kara react with visible shock, followed by a comforting warmth that could’ve made her float off the ground, if she wasn’t careful.
“Fine, fine, I’ll be in town…” Katherine began to tell her daughter of her future plans, but once again Cat was not wanting to be regaled by whatever vapid, vain reason her mother had to be in town, no-doubt a Nobel Laureate or Mega-Star author to which Catherine Jane Grant ‘couldn’t compare’ to.
“Oh, you don’t have to settle this with me, I’ll have Kara call you back to schedule it. Bye mother.” Cat roared, before once again slamming her phone down.
“So, I take it you’d like me to…” Kara began to ask as she noted it on her tablet, before looking up to see Cat’s head back in her hands.
“Cat, what’s wrong?” Kara asked, resting the tablet on Cat’s desk before closing the minuscule distance, resting a hand on Cat’s hunched-over shoulder.
“It’s nothing, I’m fine… I’m fine.” Cat tried to beg off, but somehow that reaction, which had become her staple reaction to any form of disappointment, just felt… wrong. Luckily, she wasn’t the only one who had the same overall thought.
“Cat, no… please don’t shut me out.” Kara meekly-pleaded in a moderate whisper, as she stopped down to look her in the eyes, only to see they were reddened and misted with tears. “El mayarah, remember?” Kara added, reaching a hand over to try to crook Cat’s face towards hers with a push on her magnificent jawline.
“Oh, Kara… you don’t need to get dragged into my mother’s delusions, especially when she thinks…”
“Cat, stronger TOGETHER. You don’t have to do any of this alone. Not anymore.” Kara all-but-pleaded, dropping her hand to squeeze Cat’s lovingly. “And, with all the honesty and respect I can manage, I don’t give a fuck what your mom thinks about me.”
Cat visibly guffawed. She was honestly not sure what to think. The confidence was startling, but the expletive was honestly shocking.
“Language!” Cat tried to fire back, her ability to keep a straight face faltering as Kara showed her own flustered reaction to Cat’s reaction.
“Hey, it got you to smile… so it was worth it.” Kara smiled, reaching over to wipe a tear from Cat’s face. “So, Cat… if I can use the question you so eloquently taught me back at you… what is the ‘anger behind the anger’ here? The tabloids have called me much worse than that..”
“Because those tabloids were written by my…. Mother.” Cat’s face went white as she realized it. It was something she knew all too well, and thought she had grown past, yet here it was, threatening to make her come unglued as she sat there.
Kara kept quiet, and just continued to crouch there, rubbing small circles on the top of Cat’s hands as her eyes stayed trained to the teary-eyed woman.
“I… no, it’s silly…” Cat tried again to retreat, but Kara gently squeezed her hand and kept her eyes trained on her. *Dick move, Supergirl..* Cat mused to herself, only because she knew that she had no defense to those kind eyes that made everything better.
“Fine.” Cat relented, letting out a deep sigh. “My issue is the same silly, stupid one I’ve had my whole life. It’s what has basically propelled me to get here,” Cat added, motioning to her desk, the room, and to a greater extent the entire building.
“I’m just a silly, stupid, weak girl who just wants her mommy to love her for who she is..” Cat just bluntly replied, before she sunk her head back onto her free hand, and use every ounce of her energy to hold back the next round of sobs.
“Cat, you are literally none of those words… not even close.” Kara began her reply, choking back feelings of her own. “And it’s perfectly normal to want that, believe me, I have experience on 2 planets, with 2 very different mothers.”
Cat just looked over at her, eyes red with hopelessness, and just stared. As if silently asking her to continue.
“You’re not weak for wanting a mother’s love. What child wouldn’t want to know that the people who made them, love them?” Kara added.
“You have a point.” Cat quietly replied.
“Oh, Cat, as the smartest woman I know always tells me, I always have a point..” she quipped back, smirk on her lips as she watched Cat realize it and get her own matching grin.
“I’m so sorry your mother can’t love you the way you deserve, Cat, but… I can try my best to fill in the gaps.” Kara offered plaintively.
Cat’s flusterment was palpable. “Kara, darling, you can’t replace my mother’s love for me… because you already show me love, and grace, to a level she could never wrap her head around.”
“Well, yeah, you’re the woman I love… what else am I supposed to do?” Kara asked, as if confused about how someone couldn’t love Cat the way she did.
“You see, darling, that’s what makes you different than her. You don’t see caring as a chore… sadly, my own mother can’t see past herself to see what you see, her loss.” Cat regained her composure, just enough to go back to matters at hand at work.
“Thank you, Kara… I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Cat admitted, her dalliances in vulnerability something that just made Kara’s heart ache more for her beloved.
(To Be Continued…?)

The sound I made when I read this and saw “OBaaT”…. O.O
I love this fandom, so freaking much.
P.S. If you end up just re-creating a Kryptonian language… how much will you charge for its Rosetta Stone? Lolz
Asking for a…. Me.
New Writing Avoidance Techniques Unlocked! Hyperfixation mode engaged!
I spent five days doing floorplans for both houses in OBaaT on floorplanner.com (the penthouse, the roof terrace, the labs on the 4th floor, the lobby, and the underground parking garage [all mentioned in OBaaT], and the beach house [both floors]).
I spent two days developing grammar rules and conjugations for OBaaT's version of the Kryptonian language just so I could write three sentences in it. I'm afraid I'll end up with something as detailed as High Valyrian. I mean, I just happily conjugated five verbs in the present, past, and future tenses. Because I could.
Oh, and for those of you who look confused right now, yes, this has to do with SuperCat, and yes, the WIP I am so totally avoiding is the sequel to OBaaT.
It has a name now: Hold the World to its Best
Just FYI. ;)
