constantly thinking about the PERFECT setup supergirl season 1 had to make kara queer;
"oh my god, you're a lesbian" – winn to kara, in the very FIRST episode.
"hell, i wanna date her" – kara, about lucy lane.
"she does kinda give off a sapphic vibe, with that big old butch S chestplate" – leslie willis (livewire) about supergirl.
there were so many other instances in s1 alone, let alone in later seasons when lena showed up (recounting every queer-coded supercorp interaction would require a whole podcast). it was the PERFECT pretext to make her even just a little bit fruity, but the cw just couldn't handle it i guess

“El Mayarah”: a Super-Cat One-Shot.
The jackahammering of Cat’s heartbeat was a distraction that was only adding to the stress of Kara’s day. Sure, none of the rest was anything that Kara couldn’t handle, she could take angry phone calls and arrogant douchebags talking down to her, no sweat. But this? This was always different, especially given the fact that she had to act like ‘Kara Danvers: dutiful assistant’ and nothing else, especially with so many prying eyes around. It was a role she was begrudgingly happy to play, except for times like right now.
Peering into Cat’s office, she saw Cat on the phone, her voice and tone growing increasingly more exasperated as the seconds ticked on. It was its own form of agony for the heroic-brained Kara, to sit there and watch the woman she loved and cared so much about in some sort of verbal altercation that had her heartbeat spiking. Could she have listened in? Absolutely, she was tailor-made for it, but out of respect for her secret paramour, she decided to take the more… human approach.
Closing her laptop, she picked up her tablet, then stood up and shuffled towards the office, giving a small knock before entering. Cat looked up, and her face was… well, it was almost impossible to read. Multiple emotions were splashed around it like a Jackson Pollock painting, and for the briefest of seconds, Kara debated whether she made the right move. However, Kara recognized something in Cat’s eyes she hadn’t seen at the office before: a small pleading. It was brief, and evaporated as soon as it arrived, but that was all the Girl of Steel needed to bolster her resolve and dive in head first.
Cat finished the altercation with a snarky dig and a thud as she slammed her phone down on its cradle, sighing in total exasperation.
“I take it that… didn’t go well?” Kara asked a bit tentatively, slowly approaching Cat’s desk. Even with invulnerability and other superpowers, Kara Danvers still knew well enough to approach Cat with caution when she was like this. Not so much out of fear, but out of an over-abundance of not wanting her brashness to push Cat’s already momentarily-manic behavior to an even bigger crescendo.
Cat looked up at her and inhaled, her face all but screaming ‘what was your first clue, genius!?’, but the earnestness in her ever-dutiful assistant, and superhero-secret-girlfriend, was enough to cut through most of the vitriol Cat felt the desire to send. It was a superpower that still beguiled the older woman, even if she both loved and hated it.
“No, it… did not.” Cat admitted, a large sigh of defeat deflating the usually prim-and-proper Queen-of-All-Media.
“Do you… wanna talk about it?” Kara asked, opening her tablet to check the schedule. “You’re free until 2, maybe we could take an… early lunch?” Kara asked, her nerves apparent, which was even further disarming of the foul-mooded Media empress.
“Sure, just make sure wherever we go they have a salad with a cheeseburger on it.” Cat groaned, pushing back from her desk and standing up, her purple, knee-length dress cutting a magnificent figure that Kara couldn’t really ignore. She didn’t linger for long, but oh, how she could’ve. Cat saw enough to notice, and the blush that flashed across her cheeks triggered the same response in return.
Striding around her desk, Cat joined the spectacled blonde and the pair walked towards the elevators in silence. Both women were doing mental gymnastics trying to figure out how to even start the conversation that would come, while keeping that air of ‘business professionalism’ that would keep the majority of CatCo off their scent.
Making it to the elevator bank, Kara scurried ahead to press the button, trying to make up any seconds that she could to get the pair someone where they could talk, hopefully with fewer prying eyes wondering why the pair were locked in such a deep conversation. “I hope Noonan’s is ok, it’s close, and they put a cheeseburger salad on the secret menu just for you…” Kara finally piped up, a crook of a smile sneaking onto her lips, which vanished instantly when there was no attempt of a reply. And a silent Cat was the deadliest Cat.
Finally, the doors opened and both women shuffled in, the awkward tension only getting more palpable as the two were now in a small, confined space, so much so Kara could feel her resolve to stay stoic and ‘not doing anything to arouse suspicion’ wearing thin. While Cat wasn’t saying or showing anything, Kara could still hear Cat’s heartbeat pounding in her ears, and it was enough of a clue to let the Kryptonian know something about the storm inside the woman.
No sooner than the doors closed and the elevator began to drop, Kara turned and engulfed Cat in a hug. Initially Cat remained stoic, long enough that Kara almost gave up and let go, but then Kara felt an arm snake around her waist, and Cat turned and reciprocated the embrace, even if just for the briefest of moments. There was no telling if the elevator would make it to the main lobby without stopping, so Cat took the risk of both ‘playing it safe’ whilst reassuring the unsure Kara she wasn’t ignoring her attempts to console her.
Kara’s breath hitched as she felt Cat reaching back to her, and it was a moment of relief that couldn’t have come soon enough. All the superpowers in the world at her disposal, and Kara never felt more powerless than when she knew Cat was hurting, but she couldn’t do much about it but try to break through from the outside. It was always a gamble with anywhere from middling and meager success, but if it was what she had to work with, she would make the best of it. “Do you want to talk about it, Cat?” Kara whispered into her ear, as Kara clung to her lover as tightly as she could, knowing there no more than a handful of seconds before she had to let go and go back to ‘platonic-assistant’ mode.
“Not here, please.” Cat replied, her words a tone that almost threw Kara. She had heard angry Cat, a lot.
Frustrated Cat as well. Occasionally happy, which was a newer experience given their shift in dynamic, but this.. this tone hit Kara like a Kryptonite bomb exploding in her face: defeated Cat.
Kara just nodded, and sensing the lobby was fast approaching, let go of her embrace and turned to face the door, the warmth of Cat still on her cheek as she sighed in her own micro-form of defeat. But of the many things Kara Zor-El was, she was first and foremost a fighter, especially for the things she loved enough to try to protect.
All too soon, the doors opened, and the pair fell back into a passable level of friendliness that made everyone else none-the-wiser, even if Kara wished more than anything she could reach her hand over and snake her fingers through Cat’s, and squeeze her hand to give her a small reminder that someone was there for her. Someone who loved her desperately.
Arriving at Noonan’s, Kara took the lead, and they were seated in a more secluded booth towards the back, though the air of awkward tension once again hung thick between them. It was accentuated by Cat ordering herself one of her favorite cocktails, and a particularly strong one at that.
“That good, huh?” Kara quipped once the server left, before her eyes went wide and she covered her mouth. “Oh, I’m sorry, Miss Grant..” she immediately apologized, before Cat waved her off.
“Kara, it’s fine… and please, we’re not upstairs, call me Cat…” she asked, showing the tinges of her more-normal personality as they sat in the secluded booth, largely out of the prying eyes of the public. Kara nodded obediently, then began to ponder on her next plan of attack.
“Carter’s father decided that today was the day to call and excoriate me for all my failings as a mother…” Cat opened up, throwing Kara slightly for a loop, pulling her from her mental gameplanning.
“Psh, like he has room to talk…” Kara bandied back, but she could tell this wasn’t just a garden-variety ‘Cat’s asshole ex called’ sort of conversation. “Cat, what did he say?”
“‘God, Kitty, how is anyone else ever going to put up with your shitty attitude’..” Cat repeated, almost without blinking, the words like whips across her skin, “‘You’re too fucking much.. I pity the next person who has to try to deal with it.’”
Kara’s heart sank into her stomach. Multiple emotions flashed through her body as she vacillated between every emotion from disgust, to heartbreak, and downright rage as the words played over and over in her head. Steeling herself, Kara took a breath and looked the older woman in the eyes.
“Well, he’s obviously wrong, Cat, you have to know that.” Kara stated plainly, but dripping with as much subtextual emotion as she could muster.
“Is he though?” Cat countered back, sighing in exasperation.
“Yes! Cat, c’mon… you have to know that.” Kara quietly pleaded, starting to lean in, before pulling back when she heard the server coming back with their drinks. Cat took her martini glass and basically downed it in one go.
“She’ll take another… thanks.” Kara ordered it for her, Cat raising her eyebrows in a small ‘thank you’. After the server excused herself, Kara turned her entire attention back to the object of her affection, and re-engaged with the verbal sparring session to come. “Ok, so, Cat… let’s talk this out: how is he right?”
Cat let out a restrained guffaw, then met Kara’s gaze. “How isn’t he, Kara? I mean, look at me, look at my whole career… it’s not an accident that I’ve built up such a frigid, ice queen aesthetic in my ascent to where I am.”
“No, it was necessary because women don’t have the same path to success that men do. Remember Perry and the chair?” Kara reminded Cat of an earlier conversation they had. “And that’s all irrelevant because I KNOW everything he said was bullshit.” Kara added, the nonchalant profanity always good for a momentary tension break.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to ‘Sunny’ Kara Danvers cussing…” Cat smirked, the blush on Kara’s face only selling the moment of relief even more.
“You’re stalling, Cat.” Kara smirked back, as the server brought the second martini, this one lasting long enough to rest on the table where the first one should’ve been.
Cat threw up her hands in a momentary admission of doing just that, before resting them back in her lap and meandering right back into the conversation, though from a very different way. “Kara.. how do you do it?”
Kara looked at her puzzled, feeling like she was called on in school to answer a question that she had NO clue about. “How do I do… what?” She asked, visibly squinting and trying to figure out this sudden shift.
“How do you do it all? Me, your family, your.. super-lative exploits. How do you do it all?” Cat asked, giving clarification that startled the Kryptonian. Why would she ask her that? It was Cat who taught Kara many a valuable lesson when Kara asked HER those same words.
“I’m sorry, what?” Kara replied, visibly dumbfounded. “Cat, you taught me how to do it… whether by your words or your actions.”
“Oh..” Cat replied, blush collecting on her cheeks. “But I certainly didn’t teach you how to be so… chipper about it.” She added with a bit of a sigh.
“No, you didn’t… but…” Kara replied immediately, lingering long enough to make Cat look up at her with intrigue in her eyes.
“You, my family, this city… that’s what makes me so, as you say, ‘chipper’.” Kara explained.
“Me? Frigid ice queen bit….” Cat began to mutter in contempt about herself.
“Cat, please, stop.” Kara cut her off, eyes simple, but pleading. “Don’t call the woman I love something she isn’t.”
Cat froze, and just looked at her with a puzzled expression
“Just because some asshole who couldn’t hack it as your other-half wants to gripe because you’re more of a man than he ever will be, doesn’t mean you get to beat yourself up for being a strong, confident woman who knows what she wants and will not settle for less.” Kara uttered succinctly, eyes trained on the media empress just like she was locked in a dialogue with one of the many villains Supergirl faced in her short career so far. “What was he even mad about, anyways? There’s no way he called JUST to complain about your attitude.”
Cat, still reeling from watching her younger paramour flashing a bit of energy that felt… well, familiar, collected herself and answered, “He was complaining about the arrangements around Christmas.. he wanted to keep Carter into Christmas morning, and I resisted.”
“Well, yeah, we have plans Christmas morning. So that’s a non-starter.” Kara deflected plainly. “He argued for the arrangements in the divorce decree, so he can suck it.”
That utterance made Cat crack up. “Somehow I don’t think he will see it that way. And wow, I forget how feisty you can get when you’re angry.”
Kara’s face turned red, but she pushed through. “I’m serious, Cat. This is what he asked for, so don’t take the blame when he decides to blame you for him trying to mess everything up. You take so much on your shoulders, Cat… don’t take his bullshit too. Or, at the very least… let me help.” Kara turned from anger to pleading in 4-words flat.
“Kara, darling.. you’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know.. I mean, for god’s sake, I owe you so much for your… super-latives..” Cat deflected, her well-worn instinct to go it alone in most facets rearing it’s head.
“Not as Supergirl, and not as ‘Sunny’ Kara Danvers, dutiful assistant… let me, Kara Zor-El, just a silly girl from a dead world, help. You don’t have to do this alone. Not anymore.” Kara pleaded, resisting the overwhelming urge to reach over and squeeze her hand.
Cat found herself at a bit of a loss for words, and was grateful when the server re-emerged to take their order, Cat her usual cheeseburger salad and Kara something that they both knew was a fraction of what she needed, but suspicion would be the least of their worries if Kara ordered as much food as she needed.
The momentary interruption was enough to cool the tensions in the air around them, and it allowed Cat a chance to think, even if at first it was just a resounding ‘Why in the HELL would she want in on this?!’
“Kara, I…. It’s just…” Cat started to explain, though she was still visibly searching for exactly what to say.
“Cat, remember? We are stronger TOGETHER. Even if we still have to have some distance between us.” Kara jumped back in, her protector instincts on full-blast.
“But, why? Why do you want so ardently to jump into my crazy, messed-up life?” Cat bantered back, words as venomless as they were pointed.
Kara let out a small chuckle with her exasperated sigh. “Because I love you, Cat. And it’s not your crazy, messed-up life… it’s OUR crazy, messed-up life. I mean, all you have is a shitty ex and business stress… I bring people with powers and vendettas who will actually try to kill you… if anything, I should be apologizing to you.”
“No. Never.” Cat shot back, taking a bit of strength back in that moment, because there was many things Kara Danvers needed to do, but apologizing for being herself was NOT one of them. “Don’t apologize for being the second-greatest thing in my life. Sorry, Carter’s #1.”
“Absolutely no offense taken, he deserves it.” Kara replied, that smile returning to her lips. “He’s a great kid, he gets it from his mother.” Cat blushed and nodded.
“But that’s all beside the point, Kara..” Cat relented, the moment of possible peace dashed by Cat’s worry and self-doubt.
“Then what is the point, Cat, that you’re this… unlovable mega-bitch that deserves to sit alone on her throne overlooking a world that fears her?” Kara asked, the hurt bubbling up in her words as she dug her heels in, proverbially, and was ready for another round. “Because that’s not what I see, at all… and it’s not even close.”
“Then enlighten me, Kara.” Cat shot back, a bit of sarcasm bubbling over on her end. “Sorry, see, I just..”
Kara lifted a hand as if to say ‘Stop’, and Cat fell silent. “Cat, I need you to do two things for me, right now, please?” Kara asked, her usual tone replaced with just as much warmth, but with a bit more of a bold, confident tone, more likely to tumble out of the lips of the Girl of Steel. Cat nodded, remaining quiet, her slight shock and intrigue sending her mind ablaze.
“Ok, first thing, you want to know what I see? What the world sees? Then I need you to listen, and not have a comeback. Second, I need you to trust me. Can you do that?” Kara asked, Cat looking at her in bemused shock. ‘When did we Freaky-Friday?’ She mused to herself.
“Yes, Kara, go ahead, I’m listening.” Cat replied, her tone subdued, but her eyes were glued to the blonde Kryptonian.
“Ok, thank you.” Kara smiled, before taking a deep breath. “How I see you… how the world sees you… is as a brave, strong, badass woman who doesn’t apologize for who she is. She’s not perfect, no one is, but she is fearless and doesn’t let anyone stop her from accomplishing anything she puts her mind to. For Rao’s sake, she conquered an industry that was tailor-made to exclude her.”
“You have a point.” Cat replied, before realizing immediately what she had started.
“Oh, Cat, I always have a point.” Kara quipped immediately, the smile on her face dripping with ‘you know I had to’-energy. “But, wanna know her secret weapon?”
“A blonde Kryptonian that always takes her breath away?” Cat let slip, seeing Kara shoot a bit of a ‘babe, seriously?’ look. “Sorry, no comebacks, understood.”
“No, it’s the Cat that no one else gets to see, except me and Carter. It’s the woman who loves so deeply she would fight anyone to protect us. It’s the woman who cares so deeply about the world she lives in she shouts from the rooftops about the things that matter. It’s the woman who loves when she’s scared, and refuses to back down from the truth. That’s your secret weapon, Cat… your heart. Don’t let some asshole in there to ruin it…. Even if one day that asshole is me.” Kara laid out, her words off-the-cuff, but they sounded so engrained they couldn’t be new.
Cat, for the first time in a long time, was purely speechless. How was any of this real? She had to be asleep, right? Had she woken up this morning? This was all so overwhelming, she was struggling to keep up.
“Kara, I…” Cat attempted a reply, but she was still unable to grasp English, and her face being as red as it was, Kara didn’t have to guess why.
Kara, feeling the wave of power still in her veins, looked around briefly, before taking the moment and leaning over the table, and stealing a peck on her cheek. “I love you, Cat, I want this… let me help you as much as you’ve helped me.” Kara playfully begged, eyes dripping with emotion as she pulled back.
“I…. I’ll try.” Cat finally formed the words, the display of possibly-compromising vulnerability was enough to make Cat’s head keep spinning, even as she was regaining human function.
“Ok, that’s all I can ask for.” Kara smiled, resting back in her seat, an almost smugly-proud smile creeping on her lips.
“You’re just full of surprises, Danvers… remind me to never underestimate you.” Cat admitted with a blush.
“Oh, I don’t have to, there’s an article from this really badass journalist about it, I’ll send you the link.” She added, enjoying her moment way too much, but Cat had to admit it looked good on her in the moment.
Cat cracked up, a wide smile painting itself across her face. “I’ve created a monster… someone call Superman…”
“… that’s not funny!” Kara pouted, before breaking back out in the same sunny smile that Cat wanted to see every morning when she woke up. Forever.

"И мир утих : затихли птицы, крики, стоны. Трепетало сердце разбиваясь в дребезги вдоль дороги. Лишь ветер развивал их повесть. Повесть о герое, что разбился вслед за своей любовью."
literal translation (everyone remembers that my English is very bad, right? I warned you)
"And the world froze: the birds, screams, groans subsided. The heart fluttered, breaking on the road. Only the wind developed their history. The story of a hero who crashed after his love."

(A billion years of technical-difficulties later, I got it to post! Thank Rao. >,<)
"Comfortable":
*Inside Cat Grant's Penthouse, National City, CA.*
Kara almost didn’t realize it. Sure, it was late, she didn’t realize that Cat was even tired, let alone starting to nod off on her shoulder. She was so enthralled in the movie and trying not to pinch herself, so she woke up and was back in her apartment, without an adorably-tipsy Cat Grant leaning on her shoulder. It wasn’t until her ears pricked the faintest of snoring sounds that Kara realized Cat was zonked-out using her shoulder as an adequate impromptu pillow, as the wine caught up with her and sent her off to hopefully not too much of a hangover the next morning.
The realization, however, sat heavy in Kara's stomach. “So, I am sitting in the middle of CAT GRANT’S apartment, and she’s asleep on my shoulder…” Kara pieced-together internally, her brain running a million different directions about what she should do. “I… I think I should go.” She relented, wanting nothing more to never have to move her perfect face, that of course looked stunning even if it was starting to drool on the sleeve of Kara's blouse.
Kryptonian Soul-Mate bonds don’t mess around.
“Ok, Kara… just slowly stand up..” she muttered under her breath, as she slowly started to shift out from underneath the snoozing woman, each small jostle or creak of furniture and floorboards making Kara’s heart leap into her throat. She was a super-powered alien vigilante with more powers than she could quantify, so super-not-waking-up-cute-girls-as-you-try-to-leave is one of them, right?
Shift, reaction, shift, reaction, it was a roller-coaster of emotions as Kara slowly slid out from underneath the sleeping Cat, and laid Cat down on the couch, covering her up with the blanket that was covering Cat’s lap. Tucking the blanket over Cat’s shoulder, Kara just took a moment to gaze on the blissfully-snoozing Multimedia CEO, and the reaction was almost immediate. The ‘warm and fuzzies’ like Eliza used to call it, and Alex would make fun of her for using as a descriptor well into high school… though once Alex met Sara, she had to admit she might have been a skosh wrong.
“I… love you, Cat…” Kara almost mouthed, her uttering of words so quiet only someone with super-hearing had a shot of hearing it. “I know that sounds crazy, but some day I hope I'll get the chance to make it all make sense…” she added, resisting the urge to cup her face. Kara could wait. Kara could be patient. She could wait for an eternity for Cat. That was the easy part. The hard part is the uncertainty. This wasn’t destined in the stars like it was on Krypton, so Kara couldn’t rest on any semblance of laurels… and that terrified her.
Pulling herself away, Kara tiptoed towards the front door, but along the way saw some paper and a pen on a side-table, and she immediately changed course to scoop the items up. “Least I can do is make sure she doesn’t think I left because I was mad, right?” Kara rationalized internally, as she picked up the pen, and looked to see the paper was Monogrammed stationary. That wouldn’t help her adjusting brain, but she could handle that later.
“Hmmmmm… what to say, what to say..” Kara racked her brain, until the perfect line dropped into her brain, and it was just cheesy enough to work, or so she hoped.
“Didn’t wanna wake you from your Cat-nap. Breakfast at Noonan’s? Kara.”
Kara looked at it, and her gut instinct was to roll her eyes and maybe admit that this was ‘too cheesy’ even by her standards, but something just seemed to insist that it would be fine, so, turning back towards the couch, Kara dropped the note on the coffee table in front of where Cat snoozed away, folded in-half with Cat’s name scribbled in a quick, but flowy fashion.
Sneaking her way back to the door, Kara looked back one more time, silently sighed, then pulled herself away to quietly slippout, striding quickly to the elevators, head swimming with a lifetime's worth of memories to placate her for the uncertain future.
