Camelot, the center of this story, is ruled by Jim Lake Jr., trollhunter and leader of both the magic and human realm. The round table, is full with knights and ladies, from all the distant lands, willing to defend the magic and fight for what is right. The queen of these lands, is Claire of the Lake, a shadowmancer. A witch. Who is able to not only control shadows, but fill Jim’s heart with pure love.

Aja Tarron, monarch of the land of Akiridion, who, despite being part of the round table, lives in her own kingdom, as opposed to her consort (the knight Palchuck) and her brother Krel (who serves as Ambassador to the lands of Camelot).

From other kingdoms, and distant lands, we have other rulers and monarchies, who have signed the peace treaty of the lands of Camelot, and follow the traditions of caring for, protecting and preserving magic, as well as magical creatures and beasts.

Rosas, an island kingdom with milk teeth, created by the King Magnífico, as a sanctuary for those who want to escape war, and leave in piece. Witches and wizards are often seen in the kingdom of Rosas, after all, it was the first kingdom to be formed with a monarch capable of manipulating magic.

Arendelle, The mountain kingdom, known for its proximity to fjords and ice magic. The world knows well the story of the so-called snow queen, and how the firstborn of the royal house of Arendelle was blessed with the kiss of ice magic, to protect her people, and prove herself worthy of the throne.

And of course, the kingdoms of the champions.

From cities, to islands. The legend says that the purest hearts come from anywhere and anywho.

No matter gold, or silver stone, what is really important is the soul.

Berk, The center of the archipelago, the land of Vikings and fierce dragons, where beasts and men live together as one. Be careful with teeth, fire and weapons, who knows, they say that the least dangerous thing in those lands are dragons. Not for nothing, Berk has no enemies.

Dumbroge, legend has it, that the oldest souls and magic itself, comes from these lands. That the richness of its power is so high that if you stand still, you can see magic itself take shape. Unfortunately, past prejudice and persecution of magical creatures in times past caused a mass migration, leaving witches and entities in short supply in this area.

Corona, the land of the sun, an island in the middle of the Mediterranean, which is said to be rich in trade, art, minerals, and above all, raw materials for magic spells. Some say that its power comes from the sun itself. Others are just lucky. The truth is that nobody knows.

Troll hunters au where it’s Frozen. Douxie is Elsa, Claire is Anna (I could’ve used Krel and Aja but I’m saving them for later). Basically the same plot as the movie but with certain changes to it. Jim is Kristoff, and the rock people he’s raised with are obviously the trolls. I feel like Toby should be that other guy who likes reindeer (I forgot his name but he’s in the second movie). Hans being Steve is obvious but bc of his character development I think I’ll put someone else. Krel and Aja would be northuldran, as well as most Akiridions we meet, though I think Aja Krel have some sort of power that lets them travel between the forest and the kingdom. Douxie would obviously be the one with powers, though he would have magic in general instead of just ice. I think that Sven should maybe stay Sven, like no particular character name attached, maybe I’ll change it but it feels weird to put one of the characters as a reindeer (which is why I decided I didn’t want Toby to be Sven). Merlin would of course be their grandfather, the one who made a deal with the northuldrans and lied, and Claire’s parents would be their parents. Idk if I’m cooking, but I think I’m doing pretty good with it. Also the forest spirits are obviously Nari, Bellrock, and Skrael.

This AU was made in April 2023, and is inspired by @emwritesfanfics' Heirs to the Arcana, but with a twist: Krel didn't get Skrael's powers. Aja did.

This doesn't really change anything. The world still ends. Aja tries to protect everyone with her new ice powers and fails.

Krel had been denying his feelings for months. He was standing next to Douxie when Aja was killed. Krel realized that he had lost the person he loved most, and the person he loved second-most would die without ever knowing about Krel's feelings. And so in one last desperate action, Krel kissed Douxie.

Jim wakes up with fire powers and the excalibur amulet. (Whether or not he gets the daylight amulet depends on if I were to use my no-time-travel version of Wizards or not. If I used canon Wizards, it'd be Jim to prevent an unstable loop involving troll!Jim. If I didn't, then Toby or Claire would become the trollhunter so we'd have one more person w/memories, this time regaining their memories the first time they transform in the armor.)

Aja wakes up with ice powers and immediately rushes over to check on her brother. (Also, she and Steve did not have kids. At most, she had been researching if they could ever have kids and if not then how to preserve House Tarron.)

Douxie wakes up with plant powers and the taste of Krel's lips on his own.

Krel's like "sure, this might as well happen" about Aja having ice powers and being from the future. Everyone's always said that Aja was extraordinary, and he was normal. At least she's more mature. Aja's sad that Krel doesn't remember.

The coup still happens, despite Aja's best efforts, and they end up on Earth (maybe even earlier bc Aja's attempts to fix things went badly). Douxie decides not to say anything about the kiss to Krel or Aja, though he had confided in Jim late one night.

They grab Gaylen's core earlier and move it elsewhere for safe keeping. Krel becomes obsessed with it

And then he merges with it

And he remembers everything

Once all the other craziness of "Krel wtf why did you merge w/Gaylen's core and why do you have wings" dies down, Krel has a quiet conversation with Douxie

Krel: I'm sorry I kissed you. Douxie, internally: Yep, it's just what I thought! He panicked at the end of the world and doesn't have feelings for me! This is part of why I never brought it up and now he's bringing it up! Krel: I didn't want to die without telling you, but now that I have context I know I must've made you deeply uncomfortable. I hope you can one day forgive me. Douxie: Uh actually do you wanna kiss me again? Please?

Also, post-Gaylenifcation Krel is more physically affectionate and less grumpy, which isn't actually that much of a change but seeing the rapid change weirds everyone out

Tales of Arcadia Hallmark au

Idea came from a conversation between me and @trololololololooz , based on our shared love of Hallmark movies, TOA, and gay stuff.

Spoiler alert, Jeves and Clairy sweetness ahead.

Steve is a big time baseball star and Mary is his girlfriend and a big time corporate lawyer. (Neither one of them is super invested in their relationship, because gay, but it's pushed on them by Steve's manager and Mary's boss, as it generates good publicity for both of them). Steve suffers a big injury, his doctor tells him it could be the end of his sports career. Steve's manager blows the doctor off, telling Steve to rest over Christmas and he can get back on the field in January. Steve gets a call from his childhood BFF Darci, who tells him that she just published a book and the release event is going to be held in their hometown of Arcadia, and she encourages him to come. Steve decides to go visit Arcadia for Christmas while resting his injury. Mary accompanies him, under instructions from her firm to scout the town for a corporate takeover.

Mary and Steve arrive in Arcadia only to have their car immediately break down. They go to the local mechanic, only for Steve to be utterly shocked that their mechanic is Jim, Steve's high school friend and secret crush. Both of them are flustered and awkward, Steve says he's only in town to visit family for the holiday/see Darci's book signing and Jim agrees to fix Steve's car. Steve overhears a phone call between Jim and Claire and thinks the two are dating and becomes sad. In reality Jim and Claire did date a bit after high school but mutually broke it off and are just friends now.

Meanwhile outside the mechanic shop Claire and Mary run into each other. Claire, a local councilwoman, recognizes Mary as the corporate takeover lawyer and confronts her. Cue wlw hostility.

Car now fixed Steve and Mary continue on their way to his siblings' house. They arrive and are greeted by Douxie, Steve's adopted older brother, who guides them inside. Douxie lives with his and Steve's younger siblings, twins Aja and Krel, and Aja's girlfriend Shannon. Douxie is a waiter/a musician on the side, Krel is a software engineer, Shannon is a liveblogger, and Aja does something completely off the wall like lumberjack/reindeer herder/bear wrestler. Steve is delighted by the reunion with his siblings and easily falls back in with them. He and Mary also let them know that their relationship is purely for business purposes and they aren't romantically interested in each other at all. At dinner Steve inquires about where their parents are, the others are all made uncomfortable by this and tell Steve they still live in town but Steve doesn't have to see them. Steve brushes off their concerns but Mary is intrigued.

The next morning they all go to the book store for Darci's book release. Steve gets there early and he and Darci have a heartfelt reunion. The book signing commences to and Steve's surprise they run into Jim and Claire at the book store. Cue blushing and awkwardness from Steve and Jim, and tooth grinding barely concealed hostility from Mary and Claire.

Shannon sees how obvious Jim and Steve are being and tells Douxie, Aja, and Krel they need to get the two of them together so they'll stop being blushing awkward messes. Delighted at the idea of hijinks they all agree.

Douxie slides in and tells Steve that while Jim is the town mechanic he also bakes on the side and does a lot of the baking for the town Christmas festival and is heavily involved with running it, and that he'd be a great person to show Steve around the town. Steve and Jim both blush and flounder saying they're going to be busy helping Mary and Claire with their respective tasks. Aja chimes in saying Mary and Claire can come along and the four of them can spend time together, shy agreement from Jim and Steve and forced grins from Mary and Claire.

Cut to them doing various holiday activities, Steve and Jim have shy sweet chemistry while Mary and Claire have barely concealed hostility. This ends with Steve's injury being aggravated. Jim, Mary, and Claire push Steve to go see a doctor, which stresses Steve greatly until Jim tells him that the old town doctor died when he slipped on a patch of ice and Barbara is the new doctor.

At the doctor's office Jim and Steve go into the exam room while Mary and Claire hang out in the waiting room. Barbara looks over Steve's injury and says he's fine for now but to take it easy and not do anything strenuous, and that he should definitely make an appointment with a physical therapist. Jim and Steve share an "I'm glad you're ok" moment, which Barbara observes.

Meanwhile in the waiting room the computer system goes down and everyone starts panicking, Mary steps in and begins organizing things, quickly bringing the chaos into order. Claire reluctantly respects her for this.

Barbara later meets with Douxie, Aja, Krel, and Shannon, once she realizes that Steve and Mary's relationship is purely for show she becomes fully onboard with their antics to bring Jim and Steve together. Shannon has a quick moment of realization "Wait are we in a Hallmark movie?"

The next day Jim and Steve spend time with Toby and Darci at their D&D session, Claire declined because she's busy and Mary because she's tired. Toby privately tells Jim his feelings for Steve are obvious and Jim should go ahead and ask him out, Jim says he can't because Steve built up a new life as a big baseball star that Jim has no place in. Darci does the same with Steve but Steve says that Jim is with Claire and Steve can't disrupt their happiness.

That night Mary is frustrated at her bosses hounding her and decides to go out to a local bar to hopefully unwind. Douxie's band takes the stage and to her utter shock Claire is with them as a bassist/vocalist rocking out to punk music. Moment of gay panic from Mary. Off stage she tells Claire she really enjoyed her performance, a flustered Claire says that punk music is just something she uses to unwind from her job as a councilwoman.

The next day they do more holiday activities with the four of them, with Claire and Mary earnestly enjoying each other's company this time. At the end of the day Barbara, Douxie, Aja, Krel, and Shannon arrange for Steve and Jim to have a quiet moment alone (Shannon remains the only one self aware of their Hallmark movie shenanigens). Jim reveals that he and Claire broke up and are purely friends now, a stunned Steve reveals that him and Mary's relationship is purely for publicity. Sharing a moment of stunned elation the two of them agree to try a relationship.

The next day Jim and Steve go meet up with Steve's old baseball team, including Eli, Logan, and Seamus who still play baseball in their free time. They are all are excited to see Steve as he's the only one who "made" it. Steve shyly says after his injury he's considering giving up sports and picking up something less hard on his body. Steve has a great time catching up with them until he's ambushed by his parents. They pull him aside and berate him for potentially giving up sports, calling him weak for not wanting to play with his injury, and make homophobic comments about him and Jim. Meanwhile after hearing the other team members talk Jim starts to feel guilty about pulling Steve away from his glamorous sports star life.

That night Jim breaks up with Steve, claiming it's because their lives are just too different. Steve is heartbroken, and under pressure from his parents and his manager, believes baseball is the only thing he'll ever be good for and makes plans to go back to the big city and back to playing.

Meanwhile Claire overhears snippets of a conversation Mary has on the phone and thinks that Mary's giving her firm the go ahead to take over the town. Claire angrily tells Mary off. A crushed Mary makes plans to go back to the city with Steve, both of them planning on continuing their sham relationship.

Steve tells Eli, Logan, and Seamus goodbye, saying he's split up with Jim and is heading back to the big city to start back up with baseball practice. They're worried about Steve both breaking up with Jim and jumping back in to baseball instead of resting his injury. They go check with Barbara, who is very concerned by Steve's plan to return to baseball, as she knows that's the last thing his injury needs.

All of them meet up with Douxie, Douxie confesses that their parents always pushed Steve too hard to succeed in baseball, and that they got the old town doctor to sweep his injuries under the rug so they could push him further and further. Douxie always wanted to intervene, but because he was a foster kid, their parents threatened to send Douxie away if he made too much of a fuss. They all decide that they can't let Steve and Jim part like this, so they wrangle everyone in town to help Steve and Jim get back together (at this point Shannon is resigned "fuck it if we're in a Hallmark movie we might as well go all the way").

Through hijinks Barbara, all of Steve's siblings, and the baseball team get Steve and Mary to attend the town's Christmas tree lighting festival. Toby and Darci find Jim and Claire drowning their sorrows in eggnog at the local bar. Jim bemoans that he can't get in the way of Steve's dream life and at least this way he can protect Steve's feelings. Toby shuts him down hard, saying that he's not protecting Steve, he's taking the decision away from him, and that Steve deserves to make his own choices and Jim owes him his honest feelings. Claire grumbles about being decieved by Mary, Darci curtly points out that what Claire heard was a small segment of a conversation with absolutely no context, Mary could have been talking about a lot of things, and at the very least Claire should ask Mary for an explanation. Jim and Claire concede and agree to meet up with Steve and Mary.

At the tree lighting Jim reunites with Steve and confesses everything, he says he loves Steve and wants to be with him, but doesn't want to get in the way of Steve doing the sport he loves. He says he'll support Steve at whatever Steve wants, as long as it makes Steve happy. Jim's sincerity has Steve breaking down, he confesses he's been grinding so much at baseball he hasn't enjoyed it for a long time, and his injury gives him chronic pain and he wants to quit but has been doing baseball for so long he doesn't know what else to do. Jim assures him he can spend as much time as he needs to figuring it out.

Meanwhile Claire apologizes to Mary for blowing up at her and asks about the phone call. Mary confesses that she is planning a corporate takeover...of her own company, using blackmail and embezzlement to oust her bosses and put herself on top. She says she loved spending time with Claire, but she also loves being a corporate lawyer, and she could never ask Claire to leave the town she loves. Claire confesses that while she does love her town she doesn't want to be a councilwoman for the rest of her life, and that she, Douxie, and the rest of the band have been talking for months about going to the city to try and make it big.

Both couples happily agree to try new lives together. Jim and Steve in Arcadia, and Mary and Claire in the big city.

Steve's parents storm in and start berating Steve again for quitting baseball just when he's "made it". Jim steps in and absolutely tears into them, saying they never truly cared about what was best for Steve and pushed him to the point of injury. Douxie, Aja, Krel, Mary, Claire, Logan, Seamus, Eli, and the other baseball team members all join in on blasting Steve's parents. Embarrassed, Steve's parents slink away.

The Christmas tree lighting commences, Jim and Steve share a kiss, as well as Mary and Claire. Shannon rolls her eyes "Of course they kiss now, we are in a Hallmark movie after all," Aja slides up to her "So does this mean you don't want to kiss me?" Shannon smirks "Oh I didn't say that".

While the couples are all kissing Krel, Darci, and Toby roll their eyes and share a moment of aromantic solidarity as the only three people in town capable of being normal about this stuff. Darci remarks that she doesn't see the Palchuk parents anywhere. Krel tells her that Douxie mentioned their parents were arrested for child abuse and taken away. Toby comments that it's weird for them to be arrested after all this time has passed but none of them really dwell on it.

Cut to the Palchuk parents' being taken away by Krampus (Strickler) while Barbara and Douxie watch. Through conversation it's revealed that Krampus (Strickler) is Barbara's friend with benefits. After he departs with the Palchuk parents, Douxie asks if Barbara cares to explain how she and Krampus (Strickler) became fwb, Barbara says no she does not.

One year later, Steve has quit baseball and lives in Arcadia with Jim. He fosters animals for the local shelter and works part time as a substitute teacher, as well as various other side jobs around town. Steve still doesn't know what he wants to spend the rest of his life doing, but he's having fun trying out the different options while being loved and supported by Jim and his friends and family. He's started physical therapy and stopped playing baseball completely, but enjoys cheering Eli, Logan, and Seamus on at their games.

Mary, Claire, and Douxie arrive in town to visit for Christmas. Mary gushes about how much she enjoys running her own firm, while Douxie and Claire gleefully share how their band is taking off.

Big Christmas party with all the characters happens, Steve and Jim share a kiss under the mistletoe.

Cue end credits over Christmas music.

The king of Camelot, is no other but Jim Lake Jr, sucesor of Arthur, who never had child of his own, but took under his wing this little child, who grew to be a knight, Arthur saw the pureness in his heart and once the king passed away, Jim took the crown. As king, he reunited the magic creatures and the humans balance, the magic prospered on his land, and both trolls and humans got to live as equals.

The legend says that the king of Camelot is advised by a kid, who never grows old. Some people call him a demon. Others call him a child. But only the knights, the rulers and the members of the round table, know well that that “child” is nothing but Hisirdoux Casperan, sucesor of Merlin, Master Wizard, and protector of magic of the realm. He may look young, he may never grow, but his soul is old. Older than many kingdoms.

So, beware of underestimate him, just for his appearance.

He might be the missing link, to find the champions of Arcadia

Hi! Here's another AU idea with Claire. What if she was actually Douxie's little sister, but still meets Jim and Toby in the 21st century somehow?

So, Claire and Douxie are runaway siblings, surviving on the streets of Camelot. When Merlin takes Douxie as his apprentice, Claire moves into the castle as well. Previously, neither of them realized that Claire has magical talent as well, but during her stay in the castle, she demonstrates her apptitude for the shadow magic. Merlin isn't that happy, but he's willing to tolerate Claire for now as she is still young and Merlin thinks he can control her.

However, at some point, Claire gets into an accident inside Merlin's study, ending in a time stasis crystal. Merlin tells Douxie he can't do a thing to dispell that one (which is a lie as he simply decides not to bother). As for Douxie, freeing his sister becomes one of his driving forces. He doesn't succeed until nine centuries later, which is about two years before Jim finds the amulet.

Ophelia and Javier are Douxie's acquaintances in this universe - they got in a magic-related trouble some years ago, and Douxie saved them. They even proposed Douxie to live with them, but he refused as he cherished his own lifestyle more. However, Douxie feels that Claire (who is a fish out of water in the modern times) needs some proper household and education, so Ophelia and Javier take her in.

Claire is homeschooled initially, trying to catch up to everything and as she is a quick learner, eventually she expresses a wish to attend a regular school. She quickly befriends Mary (who finds Claire rather quirky) and Darci (who thinks that Claire is struggles to be herself because of pressure).

When Jim finds the amulet, Claire starts to suspect that he has gotten into some magic-related accident. After all, despite being Douxie's sister, she has no idea about the amulet - it was created after her time stasis accident and Douxie never mentioned it to her. So Claire thinks that Jim stumbled upon some dangerous artifact and decides to save him. She barges in right after Blinky and Aaarrrgghh corner Jim in his basement and misunderstands everything trying to attack Aaarrrgghh with her magic. Luckily, Blinky manages to resolve the misunderstanding fast enough.

So, Claire becomes a part of Jim's team really fast here. She doesn't tell her brother though as she is afraid Douxie might try to keep her away from the adventure (as he is overprotective because of her accident with magic). Claire, however, tries to find some information in her brother's book all the time.

Jim is the first person she entrusts her secret of being born in a different era even though she is slightly afraid he might be repulsed by that. He dispells her fears at once.

As there are no misunderstanding between two of them, Claire and Jim develop romantic relationship rather fast. They go together to Papa Skull concert. However, it is the day when Enrique is kidnapped and Claire blames herself a lot for not being able to save her adoptive family son. She decides to put romance on hold for a while.

Claire's shadow magic develops a lot because of her negative emotions and Douxie notices that something is off with her. After a serious talk, Claire confesses everything to her brother and Douxie joins the team as well. However, he finally realizes that his overprotectiveness brings harm and lets Claire decide for herself.

Claire still gets the shadow staff, and Douxie lets her use it after some consideration (as he feels his sister still has enough positivity to balance her negative feelings). He also starts to teach her properly.

Morgana starts possessing Claire way earlier, back before Jim goes to the Darklands. Morgana is more careful though, never revealing her actions, but the team Trollhunters can't help but notice some oddities. Sometimes, it is as if their plans are leaked. No one suspects Claire though, chalking it to coincidences.

Morgana, after watching Jim for some time, decides to lure him to her side. She occasionally takes control over Claire during her time with Jim, bringing up how unfair it is that trolls are oppressed. Jim, unaware of the possession, shares his vision of eventually revealing trolls existence to the world as he believes that humanity will eventually accept good trolls.

Morgana finds Jim extremely naive and hopes he will change his views after seeing how cruel humanity can be. After Jim returns from the Darklands and Gunmar takes over the Trollmarket, and only a fraction of good trolls escape, she orchestrates the situation when Arcadia locals learn about the trolls existence. She also uses her changelings to feed the paranoia and there are hostile Gumm-Gumms roaming around, so locals starts to suspect each other of being shapeshifters and try to hunt trolls (obviously, those who are weaker are ones to suffer the most). Jim and his team are forced to hide in the forest together with the troll refugees.

Claire starts to suspect that something is wrong with her as Jim mentions some of conversations they had but she doesn't remember. Initially, she just thinks that there maybe a polymorph posing as her, but as she investigates more, she realizes that someone takes control over her body. Claire travels inside her mind in secret, and is nearly defeated by Morgana, but Jim and Douxie come to her assistance in the last second, giving her positive anchors she needed to win.

Douxie decides to wake up Merlin as no one knows how to deal with the whole mess. Sure thing, in this AU he is less confident in his master's skills (because of Claire's situation), but it seems there is no other choice. Merlin is typical Merlin (and he isn't happy to learn that Claire is free in addition to Morgana).

After some thinking, Merlin decides to use Claire to seal Morgana for good. He appeals to her sense of guilt as Morgana used her as a vessel to act through and start the mess. Claire agrees to his plan, not knowing that NotEnrique has overheard the entire conversation and told it to the rest of the team.

Meanwhile, as the battle against Gunmar is approaching, some residents of Arcadia who believe that trolls can be good and bad (like Barbara, Javier, Ophelia, Steve, Eli, Mary, Darci and some teachers) manage to convince locals to be more open-minded. So, there is Arcadia's united human plus trolls forces versus Gunmar's army. Douxie gives Jim's amulet some tinkering, temporarily strengthening it.

Jim encounters Claire about Merlin's plan, telling her that there should be the different way and that they both has gone against expectations countless times. With that encouragement, Claire thinks out of her own sealing spell to seal Morgana.

Both fights are won, though Jim's amulet is barely functioning right now because of the overload and Claire's magic overuse leads to her staying powerless for a while.

Steve is a witch and potions student at Hexside though he used to be in construction. His dad works at Glandus but Coach is the construction teacher at Hexside. He also plays Grudgby.

Krel is a human and is Multi-Tracking Bard and Illusion at Hexside. All the Akoridians are in the illusion track and use glamour stones to hide their ears in public.

Aja is a human and is in abomination and illusion at Hexside. She also plays Grudgby.

Toby is half human and is multi-tracking beast keeping and illusion at Hexside. He was born on the BI but still has some human features that he sometimes hides with a glamour stone. He likes to help his Papa with the animals.

Claire is a witch and multi-tracking bard and healing at Hexside. I had her do healing because, in Changling Families Adventures, she became the team’s field doctor when Barbara isn’t present or available.

Darci is a witch and Multi-Tracking healing and plant at Hexside. I headcanon that Darci grew up to be a social worker and therapist and thought plants and gardening would go well with that.

Seamus is a half-wolf demon and is in beast keeping at Hexside. His bio dad was a witch but his mother was a wolf demon. He now lives with his dads, sister, and uncle who are all ogre demons.

Mary is a witch in the abomination track at Hexside. Abomination is the closest there is to water and she could give Amity a run for her money. I probably should have made her blue streaks abomination…

Eli is a winged witch demon and multi-tracks bard and plant magic just like his mother would have had she the opportunity. He likes to make plants grow with bard magic. Mary and Toby are his siblings and Krel is his boyfriend.

Jim is a half demon and is in potions and abominations a Hexside. I combined his human and troll forms from Changling Families. I figured that these tracks would work for him on his way to take on Vendal's job as a school leader.

And, finally, there is Douxie. He's just a witch and a bard at St. Epiderm since it's said to be the private school in the show.

Judging a Book by its Cover

Lost Souls Summary: Merlin awakens early from his  sleep. He decides  that he doesn’t want to leaving anything to chance  and kidnaps the young  James Lake Jr. to began training his Trollhunter  as early as possible.

Barbara  is  determined to hunt down the man who kidnapped her son. In her  efforts  to get her son back she finds a strange old radio that speaks to  her in  a woman’s voice. The radio leads her to an underground society  of  shapeshifters.

Mother and son meet again years later as strangers on opposing sides.

GDT Arcane Books is a small store on the main street of Arcadia. The space it now occupies has been empty for as long as Toby can remember.

The sunshine is bright and the air warm as he and Darci linger in front of it.

“So ready to enter a world of mystery and magic?” He asks her in a dramatic wavering tone.

He wiggles his fingers and eyebrows for emphasis.

Darci giggles at his theatrics and then holds her arm over her nose as if she’s hiding behind a cape.

“After you, my dark lord,” She says using a terrible Dracula accent.

“Now now!” Toby tries to sound business like. “We’re looking for wizards here not vampires.”

“You’re no fun,” Darci says poking him in the side.

Toby chokes on the laugh he’s been holding in.

“Hey not the sides! You know I’m ticklish.”

Darci smirks.

Sensing danger Toby quickly darts into the relative safety of the store.

He pauses upon entering, eyes struggling to adjust to the dark interior. The store is two stories joined by dark wooden spiral staircase. Not an inch of the walls is visible through the shelves. They overflow with a multitude of books of all kinds. Strange knick-knacks and oddities flicker and peer from any space between the books. The few plants cluster around the window vying for the little natural light.

“Woah.”

Toby is somehow shocked to not see dust covering everything. How did they get all of this in here so quickly?

“Yeah,” Darci agrees in a hushed voice coming in behind him.

“Welcome to GDT Arcane Books.” Says an accented voice from behind them. “We have all your magical and mystical needs. Anything I can help you with?”

Toby jumps a little and turns around.

To the left of the door is a desk and behind that desk is a darkhaired teen who looks like maybe a highschool senior or a college freshman. A black cat with a strange white marking on its chest is perched on his shoulders.

Toby sputters for a moment before Darci takes over.

“Hello...” She pauses and her eyes scan the cashier’s name badge. “Douxie. Do you have anything about Merlin?”

“Hmmm,” Douxie taps his chin and the cat climbs across his back to his other shoulder. It squints at them through eerie gold eyes before settling to washing its face with a paw. Toby realizes with a start that the cashier’s eyes are same color as the cat’s.

“We have quite a few. Are you looking for novels, mythology, legends, theories, or poetry?”

“Mythology, legends and theories would be good,” Darcie says.

“Ah! Are you doing some research?”

She nods.

“In that case you will want to go to the second level, back of the last shelf. Would you like me to show you?”

“No. We’re good,” Toby quickly cuts in.

“Okay, let me know if you change your minds.”

The bookstore has an incredible variety of books from trashy vampire romance novels with oil paintings of shirtless men on the cover to large volumes that look like they were unearthed from the runes of a castle to what appear to be academic textbooks. If someone had told Toby that this shop had literally every book relating to magic he would have believed them.

The two of them make their way upstairs. Toby has to keep himself from drooling of the wicked awesome crystals that were displayed all over. Does he have plenty of amethysts and emeralds? Sure. Would he take more? Heck yeah! Anyway these ones just have a gleam to them that draws him in.

They reach the shelf and by unspoken agreement Darci starts on the right side and Toby on the left. They slowly work their way in pulling out books at random and leafing through them.

Eventually Darci finds a book comparing different narratives of King Arthur and Toby a book about the origins of Merlin. It doesn’t seem like enough so they move to the shelves on the back wall that are labeled “Magic”. If magic is real –and they are certain it was- they need to know what they are up against and how to fight it.

“What about this one?” Darci says finally.

Toby comes over to look at the book she is holding.

“An Introduction to Basic Magic and Wizardry,” The title reads.

Toby snorts.

“Sounds like a textbook,” Toby says.

They open it and peruse the table of contents. There are sections labeled things like:

“The Evolution of Magic”, “The Where and When of Beginning Practicing the Mystic arts”,  and “Who’s Who: the Different Types of People that Use Magic and What Sets Them Apart.”

Toby stares at it for along moment and finally says:

“This really sounds like something Strickler would assign us.”

Darci hums.

“Right?” She tucked it under her arm. “I’m going to buy this one… If I can afford it… There isn’t a price tag. What kind of store doesn’t have price tags?”

Toby shrugs.

“I’m look just a little more.”

“Okay. I’m heading down to see what this costs.”

Toby is left alone in the top floor of the book store. It isn’t too bad as far as bookstores go, he decides. Maybe it’s the timeless feel. New books and old books live here side by side. He feels like if he stays here a thousand years might pass on the outside or maybe just 5 seconds. (Perhaps if he digs deep enough he could even find the things he’s lost.)

Finally, at the bottom of the shelf, a worn leather-bound volume catches his eye. Toby carefully pulls it out and examines it. It’s called “A Treatise on Trollish Geology.” It’s written by someone named Dictatious Galadrigal which is one of the weirdest names ever. And the translator’s name is just as strange. The title sounds super dry and boring but when he opens it the pictures are vibrant and draw him in. Beautiful gems the likes of which he’s never seen before. Even if it’s probably fantasy he wants to read it.

He tucks the book under his arm but rather than making his way down the stairs he hesitates. He peers over the railing and sees that Darci is happily petting the cashier’s cat. He has some time then. He wanders along the shelves peering at strange knick knacks and oddities. He’s half gawking, half looking for something. What he’s looking for he isn’t sure.

“Toby?” Darci’s calling him.

He starts toward the stairs. He pauses and glances back for a moment before making his way down.

“Ah… A Treatise on Trollish Geology,” The cashier says. “Haven’t read that one myself. I do need to let you know that book isn’t for sale. It’s actually a rental. Is that okay?”

Toby blinks but nods.

“How much is it to rent?”

“It will be eleven dollars a month plus a deposit that you will get back after you return the book in good condition. I will also need you to fill out a slip with your name and address.”

“Okay.” He actually doesn’t mind coming back. He can’t say why but he still can’t shake the feeling there is something here he’s supposed to find.

The bell rings as the duo exits the store. Douxie and Archie watch for a moment, waiting to see if they would come back in. They don’t.

Archie hops down from Douxie’s shoulder and puts his glasses on.

“An odd duo, don’t you say?”

“Yeah,” Douxie says with a frown. “Did you notice anything?”

“Well the short one lives with a lot of cats,” Archie says, tail flicking. “Two males and three females. One of them is…”

“Anything magic related. They were able to pick out those books so they must have some ties to the magic world.”

“Mmmm… Yes... but it’s faint. They both have potential but in different areas.”

Douxie nods.

“We’ll keep an eye on them then. We could certainly use more wizards in Arcadia. We’ve barely set up and there’s already more odd stuff than anywhere else we’ve lived.”

“Indeed,” Archie says. “They are a bit young to be helping out, however.”

“I know… perhaps in the future.” Douxie moves out from behind the counter and starts to work on stacking more books. He chuckles. “I’m always tempted to give out some random personal trivia fact about Merlin whenever people look for books on Arthurian Mythology.”

Archie sighs.

“Well for the sake of our continued secrecy I am glad you are showing restraint.”

Douxie eyes him curiously.

“Are you sure there are changelings in Arcadia?”

“There is a Trollmarket,” Archie says matter-of-factly. “Where there is a Trollmarket there is bound to be at least a handful of changelings monitoring it. Trolls are nowhere near as sneaky as they think they are and it is to the benefit of changelings that no one knows about trolls.”

“True.”

Just then the bell rings at the front door. Archie puts his glasses away and shifts to all fours before jumping back up to Douxie’s shoulder.

“Welcome to GDT Arcane Books,” Douxie says as he emerges from behind the shelves to greet the customer. “We have all your magical and mystical needs. What can I help you with?”

The customer who just walked in is a tall red-haired woman. She has a lined and worn face but the sharp blue eyes that watch him from behind a pair of glasses are calculating.

Out of the corner of his eye he sees Archie sniff the air and then bristle.

Fortunately spending a few centuries doing customer service does wonders for one’s poker face, so Douxie keeps an easy and relaxed smile on his face.

“I just wanted to come in, since you are new in town,” She says, turning in a slow circle. “This is a very nice store.”

“Are you looking for anything in particular?” Douxie asks.

He would really like a clue on her motives.

“Probably nothing that you have,” She evades with a chuckle. “So I’ll wander around a little.”

“Of course! Let me know if you need anything… Mrs..?”

“You may call me Dr. Lake,” She says.

Interesting phrasing there. Archie’s tail tightens around his neck.

“I go by Douxie,” He responds with an easy smile.

Dr. Lake nods and then strolls off into the shelves.

Once she is out of sight Archie and Douxie exchange a glance. The cat hops off his shoulder and then to the floor behind the desk. A moment later, Douxie spots a small black fly buzzing in the direction Dr. Lake had gone.

Douxie debates finding an excuse to work on the shelves in the area Dr. Lake is but decides against it. It’s better to let Archie do the spying.

A half hour passes before the woman leaves the store. She doesn’t purchase anything but she does ask about their rental system so Douxie suspects she might be planning to come back.

As soon as she’s gone, Archie buzzes back to the desk and transforms back into a cat.

“So,” Douxie says. “What’s got your hair up on end? Find out anything interesting.”

“Maybe, but most importantly, I’m sensing traces of Morganna’s magic from her.”

Douxie stills, the book slipping from his suddenly nerveless hand.

“Like possession-type or…”

“I don’t think it’s a possession,” Archie says. “But we should definitely find out all we can.”

“Did you see any themes in the books she was looking at?”

“A lot of stuff about the fair folk, a few books about basic magic, one about theories on the ties between language and the invocation of spells.”

“Hmmm.” Douxie taps his chin. “An interesting set. What do you think she’s up to?”

“Sounds like a deal gone bad to me,” Archie says. “That or she’s learning to use Their magic. Or she’s made a deal with one of Them and is preparing for interactions with others. It’s hard to say with how little we know.”

Douxie sighs.

“Why does Morganna have to crop up again? Can’t we be done with her?”

Archie rubs his head on Douxie’s chest.

“We knew she wasn’t really gone. Those with the Old Blood do not die easily. Even if they are part human.”

“I know,” Douxie says.

Absently he rubs at his wrist. His nails lightly scratch the shiny raised patch of skin peeking out from under his bracer. Archie places his head over the scar and Douxie starts stroking him instead.

“So what do you think we should do?”

“What we have been doing,” Archie says.

“Keep watching and waiting?”

Archie nods.

Douxie sighs. Sometimes being a wizard is not all that it’s cracked up to be.
