Fall 2019 Basketball Championships

At 6pm the MAC Gym was packed and ready to go as the Men’s Recreational A and B games tipped off.
On Court 6, our Men’s Recreational B matchup between the home team, The Cob Mob, and the visiting team, The Ballers, was a barn burner from beginning to end. Things looked promising for The Cob Mob as #24, David Simoneaux scored 27 of the team’s 42 points. In addition, his teammates, Jose Marcano and Lucas Alward had nine and six rebounds accordingly. Even with these dominating players, The Ballers had something even better up their sleeve, team work. Sharing the spotlight, #20, Aaron Crawford, and #0, William Masafu, put 16 and 17 points on the board for their team. With only six players checked in on the roster, all but one had made at least one basket. The Ballers also owned the boards, tallying 34 rebounds for the game. Again, Aaron and William showing great leadership had seven and nine rebounds to add to their stats for the night. As the seconds were ticking down and still anybody’s game, The Ballers had faith in William Masafu. In the final 10 seconds, William exploded from the left wing and threw down a thunderous dunk to seal the game with a 46 to 42 victory for The Ballers. Congratulations to our officials on the game: Julio Mendez, TJ Llinas, and Kervin Louis.
On the other side, on Court 5 was a similarly intense matchup between home team, Big Cheeks, and visiting team, Zaddies in the Men’s Recreational A Championship. Both teams were equally matched having multiple aggressive offensive players as well as dominating defensive players. For Big Cheeks, 20, Kevin Heben, and #13, Hassan Robinson, were hot from the 3-point line each scoring 18 points and #21, Johnathan Lopez, scored 20. On the other hand, Zaddies also brought the fire power from #42, Jean-Nicolas Belfont, who scored 15 points, #40, Hunter Miller, who scored 19 points, and #15, James Clark, who scored 21 points. To end the first half Zaddies wanted to leave Big Cheeks shook up as Jean-Nicolas drove from the left side of the court and elevated for an and-1 dunk. Not feeling the pressure at all, he went to the free-throw line and sunk the free throw too. The minor differences between these two teams that ultimately gave Big Cheeks the edge led to the 83-75 victory for Big Cheeks. Congratulations to our officials on the game: Nuri Troy, Jose Acevedo, and Brenee Cummings.
Things were less intense during the Co-Rec Championship at 7:15pm. The Family, who had been dominant the entire season, finally met their match. Ball Was Life showed no mercy in their 80-47 victory. Taking advantage of their opportunities, Ball Was Life went into halftime with a comfortable lead, 41-22. Coming out of halftime, both teams enjoyed the game, cheering each other on and laughing at each other’s mistakes. Both teams took their chances dunking and only a few were successful. The ladies from both sides were also active, driving to the basket and shooting from outside the arch. Congratulation to our officials on the game: Ben Sanders, Konnor Crocco, and Breyonn Davis-Carter.
In the most exciting, back-and-forth game of the night, our Women’s Championship was a face off between 5-0 Cookies and Kareem against the home team, and underdogs, 2-3 Nunu’s SQUADDDDDD. Cookies and Kareem’s point guard #41, Sarah Fazio, used her size to her advantage. Cutting in and out of players, she was breaking ankles and opening herself up to score 13 points and a game high of four steals. Teammate #32, Brooklyn Collins, contributed a double-double, scoring 11 points and getting 12 rebounds. Nunu’s SQUADDDDDD, although equally impressive in statistics, were memorable for their plays. In the last 1.2 seconds of the first half, #4, Samatha Provenzo, heaved a one handed long shot from the white volleyball line opposite their basket that just missed and bounced off the rim. During the second half, #10, Rain Brigman, got fouled while in transition after she elevated during her drive to the basket. While still in the air she loops the ball under and around for the and-1.  Despite these impressive plays, Cookies and Kareem pulled out the 45-41 upset. Congratulations to our officials on the game: Anthony Merdjane, Cam Emanuely, and Tofa Dalmeida.
To round out the night we finished with our Men’s Competitive Championship. N.A.R.P. and Wisconsin White Boys, who none of which are from Wisconsin, each had deep rosters but only half of Wisconsin White Boys’ roster contributed to the team’s stats. Only five of the eleven players had scored any points, whereas five of the eight from N.A.R.P had scored. Teammates Steffen Davis, Joseph Kuligoski, and Horace Neysmith were the team’s leading scorers and rebounders. Maybe it was because they were feeling nostalgic about their good ol’ days on their college teams, but they certainly haven’t lost their touch. N.A.R.P’s #31, Joseph Kuligoski, had a team high 26 points while #30, Horace Neysmith, had a team high of six rebounds. Don’t count out the Wisconsin White Boys though because the five scorers averaged 10 points each. In the end though, the skill and experience of N.A.R.P. helped them edge out the Wisconsin White Boys 65-53. Congratulations to our officials on the game: Detroy Farquharson, Daniel Kandell, and Pierce Talbert.
