Lisa Frankenstein Filming Locations

As promised, here are some of the filming locations for Lisa Frankenstein. As I just saw Kathryn Newton at Spooky Empire in Orlando this past weekend, I decided to stalk filming locations for some of her cooler movies. Or you can just watch the video I made, which covers all the locations but it goes into much less detail:

I found most of the locations on my own, but then received a location list from a person on the film's production team which confirmed the ones I'd already found and gave me the ones I was missing. Big thank you to that person!

***Spoilers below***

We'll start with Lisa's home which is located at 2552 Cypress Lawn Dr, Marrero, LA 70072. The shed in the back yard for the tanning booth is really part of the property, & can just be seen from the street (circled in red in second image).

Now, if you go there, remember, THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. Perfectly fine to admire it from the street, but do not trespass, do not knock on the door, do not ask for a tour, & do not ask if Lisa is home. Please. Now, if the folks living there say 'Hey' & invite you in when they see you in the street taking selfies with the house, that's another thing entirely - but otherwise, low profile it.

Although they filmed a little bit inside the real house, at least for the scenes where Creature first arrives, most of the house interiors were filmed on a sound stage which I know thanks to Zelda Williams posting this photo:

And that sound stage is The University of New Orleans Nims Center Studio located at 800 - 824 Distributors Row in New Orleans. I know this because of this picture from a behind the scenes video showing the entire cast & crew taking a group photo with two distinct architectural features circled. The next image is a Google street view of the same location with those features also circled.

Per the locations list, the party house Lisa & Taffy go to early in the film is located at 12565 Patterson Rd, New Orleans, LA 70131, which I've confirmed via location detail on Google maps:

And the high school is Belle Chase high school at 8346 LA-23, Belle Chase, LA 70037, which I've also confirmed via architectural detail:

The exteriors for Bachelor's Grove Cemetery & the woods around it, the wooded paths, & the bench scenes all take place in Brechtel Park, which is located in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans.

The park offers roads for driving scenes as well as thick woodland with vines & dense ground cover for the cemetery set - which, sadly, was entirely fake. Below is the exact location of Bachelor's Grove.

Bachelor's Grove is located at GPS coordinates 29.9100534 -90.0124431. The easiest way to get there is to take an asphalt sidewalk that you'll find about 100 feet to the right of the entrance. That sidewalk will take you around the north edge of the park and then turn left (south) where you will look for the 2nd marked trail. Follow that trailfor about 50 feet and you'll find a second marked tree, which I call the Twisted Tree, and you're in Bachelor's Grove.

Moving along, the scene at 1:17:37 in the film where Creature goes to retrieve Janet's (Lisa's step-mom's) car and kills the mean old man who is harassing the kid who can't start a lawn mower, was filmed at the south dead end of Dede Street in Marrero, LA at GPS 29.855776, -90.093451.

Rather pleased with myself for finding that one - not easy.

Creature then returns to just outside Bachelor's Grove, which again was filmed in Brechtel Park, with precise location circled in the third image.

Lisa & Taffy arrive there & Lisa psychs herself up to go into the cemetery to kill Creature at GPS 29.906104, -90.009096

This is still in Brechtel Park, they just moved the cars about 30 feet to the west & spun the camera around - the dead giveaways are those posts along the road & the two small hills in the background.

Lisa then runs down a wide, woodland path.

This photo of one of Brechtel Park's wide, wooded paths is the same path, located at GPS 29.908912, -90.011958.

And here's that spot circled below:

When Dale, Lisa's dad (played by Joe Chrest, who also plays the Wheeler's dad on Stranger Things), & Taffy visit Lisa's grave at the end, they are standing in the southern section of Carrollton Cemetery in New Orleans, at GPS 29.947097, -90.121813.

The reason they used this location is because Carrollton is one of the few New Orleans cemeteries that has a large section where all the graves are below ground, as this movie is supposed to be taking place near Chicago.

As for how I know they used this specific location, I have a wine bottle shaped tombstone to thank for that. In the below image, we see that odd tombstone from the front.

And here we see it from the back, as I wasn't able to get a clear image of it from the same perspective of the above image:

And the final scene on the bench is also in Brechtel Park at the location circled on the map, GPS 29.909290, -90.010784.

So the only significant filming location I can't find is Michael's red brick colonial, but whatever. Found Michael's house, too!

Let me tell you about my favorite grave….

(Everyone has a favorite grave, right?)

This one is mine. Her name was Carrie and she lived from 1890 - 1897.

This is all I know of her life.

Her legacy, however, is a statue of a little girl (presumably a depiction of Carrie herself) in a family tomb in Carrollton Cemetery in New Orleans.

Now, Carrie died in 1897. Which was not unusual- anyone who does genealogy knows that many graves in the 1800s belong to children. What IS unusual is for a child to have their own dedicated tomb with a statue. Not just a stone plaque with her name. A full on statue of her. And this was a girl child. (Heck, many full grown women didn’t get more than a name carved next to their husband’s name)

Her parents must have been absolutely devastated to dedicate the time and money to commemorate their 7 year old daughter.

Sometimes I wonder how she died (the likelihood is disease- this was a pre-vaccine era and childhood was rife with deadly disease) and who she might have been had she survived.

But mostly, I like to go visit her and appreciate how lovely a tribute her statue is that someone over 100 years later thinks about her every once in a while.

Movie Royalty

Georgia's biggest buried star is Susan Hayward, who in 1958 won an Oscar for her role as an innocent woman convicted of murder in the film I Want To Live! The year before that triumph, she married Carrollton businessman Eaton Chalkley and moved to his town, where she became active civic and charitable causes. She continued these activates after her husband died in 1966. At her death nine years later, in 1975, Hayward was buried beside her husband in Our Lady's Memory Garden at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, which she had helped build. The cemetery is found north of Carrollton, off GA 113, at 210 Old Center Point Road. (Remember the "Old"; we thought it was Center Point Road, which comes first, and wasted an hour trying to find the grave.) At her request, Hayward's gravestone reads simply MRS. F. E. CHALKLEY, but the church added a small stone to explain her famous identity. Fans often stop by to pay their respects, and the church keeps a scrapbook on the film star who chose Georgia over Hollywood.

Susan Smalley, 18, and Stacie Madison, 17, were best friends from Carrollton, Texas. On the 19th of March, 1988, they were determined to make the last night of spring break count and planned a sleepover at Stacie’s house. They were set to graduate from Carrollton Newman Smith High School in just two months time. Stacie was working for a prominent allergist and was hoping to go to college. Susan is as an honor roll student who wanted to move to Florida.

In the evening, Susan and Stacie climbed into Stacie’s yellow 1967 mustang convertible. They drove to the mall, they stopped at Susan’s house, and then drove to a friend’s party in Arlington. They left the party at around 10PM and then went back to Susan’s house before returning to the party at 12:01AM. Between 12:30 and 1AM, Susan and Stacie went to a Steak and Ale restaurant in Addison where Susan worked as a waitress. Susan chatted to a boy she worked with and then Susan and Stacie left in the mustang. It was the last time they were ever seen.

After being reported missing the following morning, police found Stacie’s abandoned mustang at Webb Chapel Road and Forest Lane. The doors were locked and the girls’ jackets were found inside. Their families immediately believed that something sinister had happened to the two girls. It was out of character for them to just vanish without letting anybody know where they were going. Investigators too theorised that the girls had been abducted although there were some unverified reports that they had been spotted at a popular drag-race strip in a warehouse district near LBJ Freeway and Interstate 35E.

The main suspect in the disappearance was Susan’s boyfriend at the time. According to his new girlfriend, he had confessed to killing Stacie and Susan with a shovel before burying them in a cemetery near State Highway 121. He was questioned extensively and given a polygraph which he passed. The cemetery was searched but turned up no evidence of the duo. He later moved away from Texas and changed his name. His ex-wife later put out a restraining order on him after he threatened her with a knife.

What happened to Susan Smalley and Stacie Madison still remains a mystery.

Visited Carrollton Cemetery today. I’ve been there before but today we were focusing on knowledge of tombs which Mary has extensive knowledge of. The last two pictures show a tomb where the roof has collapsed and a full blown tree is growing out of it. This is why our organization @saveourcemeteries is so important. Georgia’s biggest buried star is Susan Hayward, who in 1958 won an Oscar for her role as an innocent woman convicted of murder in the film I Want to Live! The year before the triumph, she married Carrollton businessman Eaton Chalkley and moved to his town, where she became active in civic and charitable causes. She continued these activities after husband died in 1966. At her death nine years later, in 1975, Hayward was buried beside her husband in Our Lady’s Memory Garden at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, which she helped build. The cemetery is found north of Carrollton, off GA 113, at 210 Old Center Point Road. (Remember the “Old”; we thought it was Center Point Road, which comes first, and wasted an hour trying to find the grave.) At her request, Hayward’s gravestone reads simply MRS. F. E. CHALKLEY, but the church added a small stone to explain her famous identity. Fans often stop by to pay their respects, and the church keeps a scrapbook on the film star who chose Georgia over Hollywood.

First off: you are everything fucked up and beautiful in this world. Second: I'll be going on my first ever visit to NOLA for my birthday in May, and (since you love it so much) was wondering if you had any tips/recommendations for places to go/see/eat. I'm thinking a ghost tour is definitely in order. Any personal favs? Too touristy for you? Would love any ideas you have to offer — thank you!

1) i just went to new orleans again over spring break weekend and it was unbearably fucking dreamy and decaying and weird and wonderful. expectedly.

2) i’m so so excited for you. you’re probably going to leave part of your heart behind when you have to say goodbye. at least a little throb of it.

3) of course i have recommendations. of course, oh god, so many.

i’ve never been on a ghost tour, personally. i tend to be weird about anything structured or laid out with guidelines, go here, do that, gasp at the right time. i like to do my own poking around, seeing what i can see, meeting who i’ll meet.

if you can, don’t stay at a hotel chain, something you can find anywhere else. the whole charm of being there is being there authentically, i think. i love le pavillon with the big statues in front (there’s more up on the roof around the pool). it’s noted for being one of the most haunted hotels but i’ve stayed there so many times and have yet to be touched by any dead darlings, sadly. but they do offer free peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and hot chocolate every night down in the lobby. everybody leaves their rooms in masses to go down. it’s fun.

also highly rec the creole gardens b&b. cutest, most charming place i’ve ever stayed.

for food:

– the camellia grill on carrollton. expect a line on the weekends anytime before noon. always. there are no tables, just one long winding countertop with stools. it doesn’t seat more than 20-ish at a time but it’s worth it to wait, very much. park across the street in the shopping center where sally beauty supply is at. 

– reginelli’s pizzeria. there’s a few locations and all are good. i like the poydras one best for sentimental reasons. it’s not just pizza. they have good everything. i always get the pesto tortellini and the garlic knots. cheesecake is also A+

– betsy’s pancake house is a must must must every time. it’s easy to pass if you’re not looking for it. there’s nothing special about it on the outside but it has a lot of history to it and the food is so so incredible. the silver dollar pancakes are knee buckling if you’re a pancake slut. the owner was murdered a few years back and it was a kind of big thing. it’s bittersweet to see her photo inside.  

–  ideal discount mart’s a tiny little grocery spot that sells the best cookies in the center of the store. and the house made rice pudding is almost ambrosia???

places to go:

– anne rice’s old house. whether you’re a fan or not, it’s fascinating to peek into the gates and think about someone living in there, looking out those windows, sitting in that garden, and coming up with dreamworlds to write. right there.

– holt cemetery. it wasn’t always gated up the way it is now. you used to be able to (mostly legally) get in at any time. but you can still go during daytime hours. there’s something extra sorrowful clinging to this particular yard.

– larry flynt’s hustler clubs. because because because. ♥

– the market (it’s down in the french quarter near decatur. you’ll know it when you see it. tons of vendors. who will push you to spend $50 on a $15 item. just say “i only have $10 on me” or whatever and 95% of the time, it’s yours.)

– and if you’re a supernatural fan, there’s a little voodoo shop that i can’t remember the name of (but it’s on decatur street near an antique shop that sells dead butterflies) and they have this high shelf of candles. it’s mostly memorial stuff, dead musicians and actresses. but they have a pair of saint sam winchester and saint dean winchester candles up there, arranged together sweetly. ♥ ♥

– audubon park. there’s a special tree there that hangs low to the ground and you can sit down on it and watch life walk by. it’s written into one of my favorite PZB books. 

– the prosthetics room @ st. roch. it’s filled with artificial legs and false teeth.

– maskarade. they sell high quality handmade masks. mostly animal faces. kind of expensive but so worth going in to look at. and you’re allowed to put 1 mask on and take 1 photo of yourself. most mask shops won’t allow that. 

– every shop on magazine street but especially the trashy diva boutique.

– the museum of death. thank you @dollylux for this one. i hadn’t known it was there until this past trip. i thought it was only in california. it was one of the most gratifying experiences. you can’t take any photos but it’s magic inside. the first room is purely animal corpses in varying stages of death. some are taxidermy heads or bodies, and some are in jars. some are framed. some are rare. it’s mostly dedicated to serial killers though. the next room plays a video on BTK in detail, shows clips from his trial, etc. they have old body draining tables on display and burial dresses hung on the walls. a section of mourning dolls. graphic crime scene photos in glass cases, including sharon tate. and dorothea puente’s cookbook (!!!) and in the very back is a theater but the seats are pews and it feels very much like a small church. it’s dark and quiet and there are altars in the corners and the film that’s playing is food-yanking gore set to some upbeat maybe-60s music. it’s graphic as f. 

an entire little corner of the museum is for jeffrey dahmer. i spent most of my visit there. they have his entire confession (nearly the size of a phone book) that you can flip through and read. you can also see his old request memos and letters to his friends. in one sent out for thanksgiving, he wrote, “i suppose you’ll be eating turkey and pumpkin pie. i don’t know what i’ll be having.“ 

in the last room right before the end of the exhibits is a podium of notebooks. one where you can write in your ideal death (it’s both wonderfully dreamy and fucking hilarious to flip thru it and read what others have written. mine is in there too now) and another for how you think your light will actually flicker out.

when that’s done – there’s the death merch. i almost bought one of everything.

burn on his hand and the other one had some cuts it happened while they were trying to put out a house fire on topwe place in two cab County friends tried to comfort the woman who was in the home when it started to burn all the occupants were out of the house at the time there was a elderly woman home at the time of the fire but she got out okay but all of the firefighters did not after flames had eaten away at the Attic – DeKalb County firefighters ran into some trouble during the course of the fire we had some hot materials fall down and cause some second possibly second third-degree burns with one of our firefighters and then we had another one sustained some minor lacerations no names released tonight the firefighter with the burned hand was taken to Grady Hospital the cause of that fire is unknown there were some frightening moments on board a Delta flight from Chattanooga to Atlanta today smoke was spotted coming from an engine on Delta flight 1021 as it was landing just after noon the plane touched down safely and everyone made it down the emergency chute all right Delta crews could not find any sign of a fire tonight police in Carrollton say they’re getting closer to an arrest in the murder of an eight-year-old girl Shea Hills body was found last November inside a sewer pipe in Carroll County she had died from a blow to the head police say they’ve narrowed the list of suspects but don’t have enough evidence to make an arrest just yet they’re waiting test results from the FBI crime lab in Washington six boys ranging in age from 11 to 14 will be in court this week they are charged with raping a nine-year-old girl in Griffin last week it’s a case that has traumatized and shocked with her residents on the Nightbeat channel twos Jonathan Serrie talked to people who live in the child’s neighborhood I’m not gonna have these mothers live right behind the woods where the nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped not knowing my daughter and my son around her plant I’m not gonna know I know what’s going on police say the girl was picking berries just before the alleged attack what shocks many residents is that the six boys accused of raping her are all neighborhood kids and all under the age of 15 I wish I lived somewhere else because I think that it makes a lot of people look bad police frequently patrol the streets of this neighborhood and a barbed-wire fence keeps children off the nearby golf course some residents say there’s just not enough for kids to do in this neighborhood over here this used to be a softball diamond now it’s falling into serious disrepair we got a commercial center Bank going over here it’s almost by the kids tee box streets and stuff you know but that’s about it I don’t know what else I can do but yeah I work at night with these mothers say parents need to keep a closer eye on their children if they want to prevent what allegedly happened here last week from happening again Griffin police are also looking for solutions on Tuesday they plan to launch a new program in which officers will patrol the streets on bicycle they say this will give police a better understanding of the communities they serve and the
