Émile François Chambon (10 January 1905 – 28 October 1993) was a Swiss painter and illustrator.
From the beginning of the 1950s, Chambon's oeuvre became increasingly popular in Switzerland; Chambon exhibited at a considerable number of collective exhibitions, most of which were in the German part of Switzerland. The publication, in December 1957, of a first monograph on Chambon, further contributed to more fully establishing his artistic reputation. The monograph was written by Edouard Muller-Moor and published by Editions Cailler in their 'Painters and Sculptors of Yesterday and Today' collection.
In 1961 in Geneva, he met, through one of their mutual friends, the writer Louise de Vilmorin, who immediately admired the artist's work and took a liking to him. On 10 May 1962, at De Vilmorin's instigation, the vernissage of a major Chambon exhibition took place at the Galerie Motte in Paris. De Vilmorin also wrote the laudatory preface in the accompanying catalogue presenting the works.
1965 firmly established the painter and his collection, for he participated in the Künstler, Sammler exhibition at Aargauer Kunsthaus, along with a new collective presentation of works by Swiss artists entitled Pittura Contemporanea Svizzera at the villa Olma on the banks of Lake Como.
From 1977 on, Chambon's output of paintings diminished and he mainly dedicated himself to drawing. He also had a few health problems and was not able, to his great regret, to attend the vernissage of the major Courbet retrospective organised in July at the Musée d'Ornans on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the painter's death.
n the later years of his life, Chambon's thoughts were mainly taken up with the perpetuation of his oeuvre. In February 1980 he met the director of the future Carouge Museum with a view to a donation that he wished to make to the institution. Two years later, the painter donated eight large paintings to the museum. Meanwhile, in October 1981, he gave away a large part of his collections – nearly eight hundred pieces of African and Oceanic art - to the Ethnographic Museum in Geneva. During this period, Chambon retouched or reworked some works that he had done several decades earlier, deeming them unfinished.
The Foundation Emile Chambon finally came into being two years after Emile Chambon's death on 28 October 1993 at Collonge-Bellerive.

Geneva/France Day 4
I managed to combine a good half of my Geneva-centric itinerary into one day so I had time to spare. I decided to take advantage of the tour company I experienced Glacier 3000 with and take a day trip to Annecy, France. I picked up a chocolate croissant from the bakery around the corner of my hostel and headed back toward the Gare Routiere bus station. There were some delays and confusion while our bus of people waited in the tourism office waiting for our bus driver to arrive. During that time I met an older gentleman from China who was vacationing in Geneva by himself. He needed some help with translating so I became his unofficial buddy/translator for the remainder of the trip.
Annecy was only a short ride away, just under an hour. I still can’t believe how easy it is to hope from country to country here. When we got off the bus we were greeted with frigid morning air and a bright blue sky reflecting off the dazzling waters of Lake Annecy.
Tumblr media
Lake Annecy really is gorgeous no matter the time of year.
Our tour guide had a short walkthrough planned for us just to get us aquainted with the area. We started at Le Palais de I’lle, a small medieval castle and prison located right on the canal.
Tumblr media
They have a museum and you can explore the building but our tour guide recommended walking around the city instead.
From there we hiked up the hill toward the Château d'Annecy, a restored medieval castle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I opted to skip out on touring the castle since our time was limited. At this point the Chinese gentleman decided to tag along with me. We headed north/down the hill toward the houses to catch a view of the city.
Tumblr media
We then headed west until we met the crowds at the Annecy Vieux Quartier Flea Market. We were so fortunate to be visiting during this popular monthly event. Every street corner in the area was filled with vendors selling various antiques and trinkets. We eventually ended up in front of a small bakery called Le Boulanger Du Faubourg where I picked up some goodies.
Tumblr media
A Gruyere and hazelnut baguette. So bouncy but soft with the fatty nuttiness from the hazelnuts complementing the salty cheese so well. French bakeries are always something else.
From there my new friend and I just wandered north aimlessly until we felt the lively city vibe dissipating. We didn’t have a great idea of where to find out bus so we headed back East toward the lake.
Tumblr media
No clue where we were anymore but the streets were getting emptier and emptier so we sensed we should head back toward the crowds.
Eventually our wandering took us to Pont de Amours, a breathtaking footbridge with some of the most amazing views I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
A distanced view of the Pont de Amours.
The bridge connected us into the Jardins de l’Europe and here my friend and I decided to split ways and I headed off into the Annecy Christmas Market since I didn’t get my fill the day before. The market is a bit smaller than the one Montreux but there was still plenty to discover.
Tumblr media
Pommes Aligot and a cup of mulled wine. It truly feels like Christmas.
I wish I had more time to spend in the market but the bus was leaving soon so I scurried back to the lot and barely caught them as they headed out. Once we arrived back in Geneva I still had the rest of the night to finish the last few stops I wanted to visit. I started by heading toward Plainpalais which featured this intricate Frankenstein monster’s statue since the area was the setting of a portion of the the Frankenstein novel.
Tumblr media
The area is also known for hosting one of Switzerland’s largest flea market.
Tumblr media
I managed to the catch the tail end of the Saturday market but many of the booths were already packing up for the day.
From Planpalais I headed south along the water until I crossed the Bridge le Pont de Carouge. This led me into the Carouge/Little Italy area of the city. Although it was a Saturday this area was surprisingly quiet. The main area I planned to explore was around the Rue Saint-Joseph where there are several novelty shops. While I was there I was craving a little snack but so many things were closed down so I stopped by for a snack at a Wasabi Sushi chain.
Tumblr media
Geneva isn’t exactly a place for sushi but I was craving raw fish so badly.
And of course I still needed dessert and the famous Philippe Pascoët-Chocolate Pascoët Sàrl was just around the corner so I stopped in for a some treats.
Tumblr media
Chocolate Moelleux & Passionfruit Dark Chocolate
I spent the next couple hours just wandering the neighborhood as the sun began to set. I made my way down toward the Place Du Marche where there were trees filled with floral colored lights. It was beautiful but strangely eerie considering how quiet the area was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Streets lined with lights and decorations but it was just so quiet.
I intended to head back to my hostel but took the wrong train and ended up towards the Les Grottes neighborhood. I decided to just walk back to my hostel. On the walk back I remembered the lack of proper restaurants in my area and I wanted a slightly more proper dinner for my final meal. I passed by a French restaurant called La Bagatelle and decided to give it a shot.
Tumblr media
Venison w/ Crispy Foie Gras, Spaetzle, Pumpkin Mash, Chestnut Puree, and Wine Cooked Pear. Not exactly a classic Swiss dinner but a very hearty and festive feeling meal.
After dinner I settled back in my hostel and packed up for my flight home the next day. But of course there was one last thing I had to try before bedtime...
Tumblr media
The absolutely gigantic face-sized chocolate meringue I purchased from the Annecy Bakery earlier in the day.

A Traveler's Guide to Geneva - Switzerland
Switzerland ranks near the top among countries with highest quality of life in the world. The country's most cosmopolitan city is Geneva, which is also one of Europe's priciest. The city surrounds Lake Geneva with stunning views of the Alps and Jura mountain chains and is characterized by its strong French culture, evident in both the language and the cuisine.
Geneva is a major banking center and houses the top 200 international companies' headquarters, including the likes of the United Nations, International Red Cross, and the World Health Organization. The city is also the capital of watch making, one of the world's oldest technologies, with companies like Patek Philippe, Rolex and Piaget carrying forward a 450-year tradition.
Getting around Geneva:
From the airport
Geneva International Airport is located 5km (3 miles) from the city center. From the ticket machine in the baggage recovery area at the airport collect a free 'Unireso' ticket which will enable you to use public transport in Geneva city for 80 minutes. Transports Publics Genevois operates a bus route to the city center, which takes about 35 minutes. CFF trains leave regularly from Cointrin railway station at the airport and takes approx 6 minutes to reach the city. Taxis to the city center cost about SFr30-35 (approx. USD $30) taking 15-20 minutes. The paper includes case studies highlighting how multinational corporations have tackled consolidation, what they gained and what pitfalls the organization encountered along the way.
Around the city
Geneva is a compact city and is easily conquered on foot, but there are a number of Taxi In Switzerland options when you need them. Driving is not recommended in the city due to the limited and expensive nature of parking.
Top tip: Pick up a Geneva Transport Card, available to all visitors staying at a hotel, youth hostel or camping sites in Geneva. The card allows you to use the public transport network for free during your entire stay. The local bus system covers virtually every square meter of the city and the intercity bus covers points outside the city.
The central train station, Gare Cornavin, has numerous rail links all over Switzerland and beyond. Be wary of pickpockets in and around the station, and if you're on business travel, don't let your laptop of briefcase leave your line of vision at any given time.
Ferry shuttles cross the lake, operating during daylight hours and departs every 10-30 minutes. Alternatively, pick up a free bicycle behind Gare Cornavin and at Quai du Mont-Blanc. The steep slopes of the Old Town and lack of bike paths in the city are a deterrent for most cyclists, but the paths along the lake are excellent.
Don't miss...
Lake Geneva, Jet d'eau and gardens - Stroll along the promenades around the lake and discover the spectacular flower clock in the gardens of Lake Geneva. If you have time, take a boat cruise on Lake Geneva, with views of castles, monuments and of course the Jet d'eau, the tallest water fountain in the world.
The Old Town & St Pierre Cathedral - Wander along the cobbled streets of the Old Town and visit the boutiques tucked away in the charming alleyways. Stop by the Romanesque Saint Pierre Cathedral, designed in the mid-12th century and took an additional 150 years to complete. For the best panoramic views of Geneva head for the Cathedral tower.
The United Nations - Take a tour of the United Nations, the world's single largest conference center for multilateral diplomacy and top-level international politics. Visit one of the surrounding museums, including the Red Cross Museum or the Ariana Museum devoted solely to seven centuries of glass and ceramics from Europe and the East.
The Saleve - For a quick and easy escape to the countryside, ride the cable car to the top of this mini-mountain and enjoy the breathtaking views of the city below and the Alps in the distance. The more adventurous can also sign up for a tandem parasail or paraglide flight.
Schtrumpfs building - Boris Chappuis, Branch Manager for BCD Corporate Travel Geneva recommends a visit to one of Geneva's more curious sites - the Schtrumpfs (the French word for "Smurfs") building, which is located in the funky Les Grottes neighborhood. The area is a modern architectural landmark, designed by three architects determined to create the most unconventional building possible. The result is a Gaudi-style mix of colors and designs, which must be seen to be believed!
Geneva's nightlife is unlikely to blow you away, but there are numerous bars and clubs around. The liveliest places are in Carouge - try Le Chat Noir one of the best jazz and blues club in Geneva. The city also has top-notch classical music and opera. Pick up a local guide to see what's on.

My mother’s “blog” that describes all we did together over break (French translation to come)
Thursday
Arrived. Emma’s brought sweets and a bottle of wine and had a homemade sign. We dropped our luggage at the hotel then went to her flat. From there we took a walking tour of the city. Met for lunch of chicken noodle soup and beer. We walked back to the hotel and checked in Kevin took a nap while we went to a department store and the grocery. We then went to a corner pub for dinner. We walked Emma almost to her stop and then we crashed out quite early and slept great
Friday
We took the train to Morges. We picked up lunch for a picnic then strolled through the city and along the lake. We picnicked on a bench in the city. It was quite chilly with the wind but in the afternoon the sun came up and it was beautiful. We got dessert at Audrey hepburns favorite place. We did a little window shopping and bought two bottles of wine from the region. Great fun and the views of the French alps were amazing. We then went to dinner where we had traditional fondue served with potatoes bread and meat. We then went back to the hotel and then walked Emma to her stop
Saturday:
We met Emma at her flat after figuring out the bus and tram. From there we went on the hiking trails by her apartment to see la jonction, the conflux of the rhône and arve rivers.
Then we took the bus to Carouge, the little Italy of Switzerland. It’s called that because of Geneva there was a market and we walked around, seeing a cute candy store, a church with bells that played music
Then we took the tram to Plainpalais, a famous square in Geneva. There are flea markets there. We went to lunch at a local restaurant.
We walked to old town looking at the cute shops and nice architecture. We walked up the towers of the Saint Pierre Cathedral. Saw bells and a good view of the city.
We went to the shopping district in Mont Blanc. We walked along the lake, by the English Garden and the flower clock. We then went to the botanical gardens and picked up some snacks and chocolate. For dinner we went to an Italian restaurant very close to the hotel. Very tasty pasta and pizza. Emma and I made a detour to the train station and picked up some medicine for Kevin.
Sunday
Boarded the train for colmar France. On our way!!! It was a great train ride and Emma was a tremendous help with transfers and all the train stuff. We arrived to a rocky start but tony and Kevin forges us on. We drug our suitcases all over! I was ready to give up and then we came across several cute shops that were open. It is a beautiful quaint city. We had lunch at a cafe and they didn’t bring my food. Once they realized they brought it and the grilled ham and cheese was VERY tasty. We then loaded back on the train and arrived in Strasbourg. They were having a protest for women’s rights! The hotel is very quaint. We made a quick walk through part of the city. Had a bit of an issue finding a place for dinner other than subway and actually left a place but then found an American friendly French restaurant!
Monday
Had a VERY full day in Strasbourg. We had breakfast in the hotel then walked down to the river to take a boat cruise. Unfortunately it was closed due to high water. We toured Norte dame church which was beautiful. We then toured an Alsace museum. From then we took a very long walk to a park and saw their zoo. We stopped for lunch at a cafe and some dessert. We then headed back and went to the art museum. Tony’s feet were bothering him so he went back to the hotel and we finished the museum. After that Kevin went back and Emma and I did some shopping. We went back to the hotel then out for a little more shopping and found Emma some nougat famous in this region. For dinner we found an Irish pub!!!
Tuesday
We checked out of the hotel and made our way to the train station headed for Lucerne. Rain again. More of a drizzle but the wind picked up and was quite cold!
We made our transfer to Lucerne. But just barely! We had to run and I was trailing the pack! Not a runner...
Made it to Lucerne in the rain and quickly found the hotel. Rooms are quite small but we got two so all is good! They overlook the river and the chapel bridge. We headed out for lunch and found a German beer house! Quite tasty. We then did a walking tour of the city and saw a beautiful church and the lion monument as well as some ornate fountains. We passed by the old Swiss house (connected to the Busch’s) but it was closed. We went into a few shops and Emma found a beautiful doily. It was difficult sight seeing in the foggy rain but you can tell this is a beautiful city as are they all on this trip. For dinner we have found an Italian restaurant! We also watched British tv which was quite funny!
Wednesday
We woke up to clouds and good morning Britain! Quite an interesting show! We are hoping to go to mount Pilatus today but not sure about the clouds😢. Mount pilatus didn’t work out and one in our party had a tummy ache. Instead we rewalked the walking tour and went up to a castle/hotel. We rode a cogwheel up did some hiking and walked back down to the city. It was beautiful! We then found a nice spot for lunch (Italian again!) then went on a boat ride on lake Lucerne. Beautiful views once again. We did a bit more walking/shopping then went to the old Swiss house-it has ties to the anheuser Busch family! We had a drink there then went to an Italian retaurant for dinner. A beautiful day all around and the sun finally came out showing us the beautiful picture postcard we had been hearing of. Absolutely breathtaking.
Thursday
What a whirlwind. Got a text at 3am that Trump would restrict travel midnight Friday. Oops. Citizens are exempt. IDIOT!!! Minimal sleep was gotten. Emma also found out they are suspending study abroad and she has to come home early. She is devastated. We left Lucerne for Bern and are hoping things will be smoother sailing for our next few days. Made it to Bern. Couldn’t check in but left our luggage and headed out. Walked along the shopping streets, picked up sandwiches at migros, walked up to the beautiful rose gardens then back to the hotel. Emma and I went out and picked up some things then we just ate in the hotel. Still very stressful.
Friday
Emma decided she would feel better going back to Geneva to pack up. We walked to see the bears of Bern and they were out! We did a bit of shopping then took Emma to the train station. Tony Kevin and I had a beer then went to the Einstein museum. We picked up a very late lunch at a street vendor then came back to the hotel and are just hanging out and relaxing. Plan to leave early tomorrow to join Emma in Geneva.
Saturday
Emma was in Geneva. We did take the correct train and arrive in plenty of time. She met us at the train station and we left our bags at he flat we the went to her French teachers house and had Swiss racelette with her husband and daughter and two sons. My absolute favorite part! They were so sweet inviting us into their home and making such a celebratory meal! We then walked to a nearby animal park and then went on our way. I had a very heavy heart knowing how much the mom meant to Emma during her time here and how sweet they were to invite us into their home. We retrieved our bags and made our way to the hotel which is close to the airport but far from Emma’s flat. We checked in and then went again to Emma’s favorite restaurant. The food is excellent!!! She made sure we got on the proper train; she will meet us at the hotel tomorrow. Kevin and Tony and I shared a beer in the bar and hope to get some sleep tonight. Ready to come home as even parts of Switzerland have changed due to the virus concerns.
Sunday
We slept in until 6:30! Sort of. Kevin has to listen to the noisy chain saws all night. Emma came to the hotel around 10 and we were able to switch rooms at no cost to accommodate an additional person. We took the train to Morges and visited the Audrey Hepburn house and grave. We picked up lunch and desserts at a cafe Audrey used to frequent. From there we came back to the hotel and are just relaxing. We are soooooo ready to go home. It has been very challenging these last few days and we are so hopeful that we will be home by tomorrow night. We just stayed at the hotel for dinner. All is good but we are ready to go home.
Monday
We woke very early and made it to the airport in plenty of time. Flight so far has been good. They ran out of health forms so Tony and I will have to complete when we land. Kevin was randomly selected in Switzerland for an additional security screening and they almost made us pay for Emma’s extra bag but we worked it out. Still nervous about Newark and what will happen with customs and bags and screenings. Fingers crossed and praying hard. Made it through screening and customs and security and rechecking our bags! We are on to our next flight. Glad we are all together!!! Made it home and our wonderful friends are taking care of us dropping off food and offering to do our grocery shopping. What a wonderful experience we had even with all the excitement. So thankful for our family and friends and for making it home safe and sound!
